Comparison of Capacitor Voltage Balancing Methods for 1GW MMC-HVDC Based on Real-Time Digital Simulator and Physical Control Systems

  • Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC)-based HVDC power transmission using a real-time simulator is one of the key technologies in power electronics research. This paper introduces the design methodology of a physical MMC-HVDC control system based on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), which has the advantage of high-speed parallel operation, and validates the accuracy of MMC-HVDC control when operated with a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). Finally, this paper compares and analyzes the characteristics of capacitor voltage balancing methods such as Nearest Level Control (NLC), NLC with a reduced switching frequency, and tolerance band modulation implemented on physical control system.

  • The control objective of drum level of boiler in thermal power plant is to maintain drum level at constant setpoint regardless of disturbance such as main steam flow. The initial response of the drum level loop process is in a direction opposite to the final response. The drum level loop shows inverse response when the power is changed abruptly. We adopt fuzzy controller using knowledge base considering system dynamics for controlling drum level. Finally, the simulation result using the digital simulator for boiler system in Seoul Power Plant Unit 4 shows the validity of fuzzy controller.

  • This paper presents the key idea of handlebar reaction force and pedal resistance force generation in creating life-like feeling in KAIST bicycle simulator. Also, it provides methods to evaluate its reality level with given reaction force profile. In KAIST bicycle simulator, the pedal resistance force and the handlebar reaction force are calculated using the bicycle dynamic model. With the information handlebar angle, rider´s pedaling torque and road profile transmitted from the handlebar system, the pedal system and the visual part, the bicycle dynamics engine calculates the handlebar reaction force and the pedal velocity.   • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the controversial issues about objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) of pulse diagnosis and investigate the objectification of traditional Korean medicine and technical feasibility of pulse simulation through the suggestion of a pulse simulator. Methods: The concept, validity and reliability of OSCE and the current situation of medical simulation was described. The actual level and problems on the simulator development was presented through haptics and tactile technology in order to compose a pulse simulator for OSCE. Results: The pulse wave system of a pulse simulator should materialize through haptic technology and the classification of the differences between tactile sensation and tactile quality is essential for the development of the relevant pulse simulator for OSCE in traditional Korean medicine. Conclusions: The introduction and controversial issues of OSCE and methodology of pulse wave reappearance system are proposed for the objectification of Traditional Korean Medicine and the development of clinical technology.

  • This paper presents the design and development of ECU simulator in order to verify automatic firmware update system of ECU SW on the vehicle. We designed and developed general-proposed ECU simulator as devide into HW and SW parts. HWadopt 32bit MPU, CAN, LIN, LCD, and touch-pad button to satisfy general-proposed ECU level. And SW constructed as finite-state-machine structure in order to support HW spec. We developed ECU manager which deliveries update data to verify validity of operation. And we tested ECU simulator with ECU manager. For test of validity of ECU simulator, we set 4 scenarios between ECU simulator and manager. As the result, we confirmed validity of operation in ECU simulator for automatic SW update system.

  • In these days, a vehicle simulator is developed by using a VR(Virtual Reality) system. A VR system must provide a vehicle simulator with a natural interaction, a sufficient immersion and realistic images. To achieve this, it is important to provide a fast and uniform rendering performance regardless of the complexity of virtual worlds or the level of simulation. In this paper, modeling methods which offer an improved rendering performance for complex VR applications as 3D road model have been implemented and verified. The key idea of the methods is to reduce a load of VR system by means of LOD(Level of Detail), alpha blending texture mapping, texture mip-mapping and bilboard. Hence, in 3D road model where a simulation is complex or a scene is very large, the methods can provide uniform and acceptable frame rates. The VR system which is constructed with the methods has been experimented under the various application environments. It is confirmed that the proposed methods are effective and adequate to the VR system which associates with a vehicle simulator.

  • Controller for doubly-fed induction-type wind generation system should be designed with mechanical power on blade. The controller in this paper consists of upper level controller and lower level controller. The upper level controller determines operating modes according to mechanical input power and calculates proper reference values. There are 4 operating modes - minimum speed control, variable torque control, torque limit control and idle mode. The lower level controller performs current regulated PWM control of rotor-side converter and grid-side inverter. A wind turbine simulator is implemented using doubly-fed induction-type generator and DSP based back-to-back converter to verify the performance of designed controller experimentally.

Development of an Active Tire Pressure Control System Using a Tire Simulator (타이어 시뮬레이터를 이용한 능동형 타이어 공기압 제어 시스템 개발)

  • This study was performed to develop an active tire pressure control system that can adjust tire pressure to the optimum level according to traveling and working condition of agricultural tractor. For the development of active tire pressure control system, pneumatic supplier, solenoid valve block including pneumatic supply line, infinite rotation type pneumatic supplier with rotary joint unit, tire pressure transceiver module and control algorithm were developed. Also, tire simulator was developed. Using this tire simulator, the feasibility of each part constructing actual system was tested by checking the performance. The average communication success ratio was 98.3% between tire pressure transmitter and receiver module according to the various tire rotational speed and data receipt position of receiver module. The communication performance of the developed transmitter and receiver module was very stable in any condition. The tire pressure control system was accomplished by using the proportional control algorithm in this study. Also tire pressure control performance of developed control system was analyzed by using the tire simulator. As a result of control performance analysis to the developed system, the developed control system took 307 seconds to inflate agricultural tractor's tire from 50 kPa to 180 kPa. In opposite case, it took 210 seconds. Also it was able to control the tire pressure accurately under ${\pm}0.9%$ (FS) in any condition.
