  • The effect of bypass diodes on the output energy of solar cells was investigated under the condition of partial shading. The maximum power point was estimated using the perturbation & observation algorithm, taking into account the correlation effect between the arrangement and number of bypass diodes. The performance of the bypass diode was tested under the consideration of the partial shading effect and simulated using a Matlab/Simulink.

  • This technical note introduces the new Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Global Seasonal forecasting system version 6 (GloSea6) to provide a reference for future scientific works on GloSea6. We describe the main areas of progress and improvements to the current GloSea5 in the scientific and technical aspects of all the GloSea6 components - atmosphere, land, ocean, and sea-ice models. Also, the operational architectures of GloSea6 installed on the new KMA supercomputer are presented. It includes (1) pre-processes for atmospheric and ocean initial conditions with the quasi-real-time land surface initialization system, (2) the configurations for model runs to produce sets of forecasts and hindcasts, (3) the ensemble statistical prediction system, and (4) the verification system. The changes of operational frameworks and computing systems are also reported, including Rose/Cylc - a new framework equipped with suite configurations and workflows for operationally managing and running Glosea6. In addition, we conduct the first-ever run with GloSea6 and evaluate the potential of GloSea6 compared to GloSea5 in terms of verification against reanalysis and observations, using a one-month case of June 2020. The GloSea6 yields improvements in model performance for some variables in some regions; for example, the root mean squared error of 500 hPa geopotential height over the tropics is reduced by about 52%. These experimental results show that GloSea6 is a promising system for improved seasonal forecasts.

Magnetic Properties and Relaxation of Vanadium Monolayer on Pd(001) Surface

  • We investigated the magnetism of vanadium monolayers on a Pd(001) surface. The electronic structure and the magnetic properties of the V/Pd(001) system were determined with the use of the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method within the general gradient approximation. Three magnetic configurations were studied: non-, ferro-, and antiferromagnetic. From the total energy calculations, we found that the V/Pd(001) system is the most stable in the antiferromagnetic configuration. The importance of relaxation on the magnetic properties of the systems was also studied. It was found that the Pd(001) surface covered with a V monolayer undergoes considerable relaxation in which the spacing between Pd layers increases in all three magnetic configurations. Contrary to the Pd interlayer spacing, the distance between the V overlayer and the topmost Pd layer is reduced. The interlayer spacing between the V overlayer and the Pd surface layer is the largest for the antiferromagnetic configuration. In the relaxed antiferromagnetic structure, the magnitude of the calculated magnetic moments on the V atoms was $1.31\;{\mu}_B$. The presence of the vanadium monolayer does not affect the paramagnetic properties of the Pd(001) surface.

Optimal Deployment of Sensor Nodes based on Performance Surface of Acoustic Detection (음향 탐지 성능지표 기반의 센서노드 최적 배치 연구)

  • The goal of this study is to develop an algorithm to propose optimal deployment of detection sensor nodes in the target area, based on a performance surface, which represents detection performance of active and passive acoustic sonar systems. The performance surface of the active detection system is calculated from the azimuthal average of maximum detection ranges, which is estimated with a transmission loss and a reverberation level predicted using ray-based theories. The performance surface of the passive system is calculated using the transmission loss model based on a parabolic equation. The optimization of deployment configurations is then performed by a hybrid method of a virtual force algorithm and a particle swarm optimization. Finally, the effectiveness of deployment configurations is analyzed and discussed with the simulation results obtained using the algorithm proposed in this paper.

Comparison of shear lag in structural steel building with framed tube and braced tube

  • Under lateral loads Framed Tube (FT) system exhibits reduction of cantilever efficiency due to the effect of shear lag. Braced Tube (BT) represents a valuable solution to overcome shear lag problems by stiffening the exterior frame with diagonal braced members. This study investigates the effect of shear lag on BT and FT under wind load. Shear lag and top-level displacement results are compared with previous findings by researchers on FT and BT systems. The investigation of the effect of various configurations in BT on the reduction the shear lag is another objective of this study. The efficiency of each structure is evaluated using the linear response spectrum analysis to obtain shear lag. STADD Pro software is used to run the dynamic analysis of the models. Results show there is relatively less shear lag in all the BT configurations compared to the FT structural system. Moreover, the comparison of the obtained result with those derived by previous studies shows that shear lag is not proportional to lateral displacement. With respect to results, optimum BT configuration in term of lower shear lag caused by lateral loads is presented.

Time-Efficient Event Processing Using Provisioning-to-Signaling Method in Data Transport Systems Requiring Multiple Processors

  • In connection-oriented data transport services, data loss can occur when a service experiences a problem in its end-to-end path. To resolve the problem promptly, the data transport systems providing the service must quickly modify their internal configurations, which are distributed among different locations within each system. The configurations are modified through a series of problem (event) handling procedures, which are carried out by multiple control processors in the system. This paper proposes a provisioning-to-signaling method for inter-control-processor messaging to improve the time efficiency of event processing. This method simplifies the sharing of the runtime event, and minimizes the time variability caused by the amount of event data, which results in a decrease in the latency time and an increase in the time determinacy when processing global events. The proposed method was tested for an event that required 4,000 internal path changes, and was found to lessen the latency time of global event processing by about 50% compared with the time required for general methods to do the same; in addition, it reduced the impact of the event data on the event processing time to about 30%.
