항공기 시스템 레벨 열관리 기술개발 동향 (The Trend of System Level Thermal Management Technology Development for Aero-Vehicles)

  • Modern aircraft is facing the increase of power demands and thermal challenges. In accordance with the application of more electric technology and advanced mission requirement, aircraft system requires increase of power generation and it cause increase of internal heat generation. Simultaneously, restrictions have significantly been imposed to the thermal management system. Modern aircraft must maintain low radar observability and infra-red signature. In addition, new composite aircraft skins have reduced the amount of heat that can be rejected to the environment. The combination of these characteristics has increased the challenges faced by thermal management. In order to mitigate the thermal challenges, the concept of system level thermal management should be applied and new modeling and simulation tools need to be developed. To develop and utilize system level thermal management technology, three key points are considered. Firstly, the performance changes of subsystems and components must be assessed at an integrated thermal system. It is because that each subsystem and component interacts with other subsystems or components and it can directly effects on overall system performance. Secondly, system level thermal management requirements and solutions must be evaluated early in conceptual design process as vehicle and propulsion system configuration decisions are being made. Finally, new component level thermal management technologies must focus on reducing heat generation and increasing the availability of heat sinks.

  • A dynamic system model of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) has been developed. The PEMFC of this study has large active area with water cooling in order to simulate the performance of the commercially viable PEMFC system for the transportation. A PEMFC stack model is a transient thermal model which is respond to the dynamic change of the coolant temperature and the flow rate. The dynamic cooling system model has been developed to determine the coolant flow rate and the coolant temperature. Prior to the system level study, thermal management criteria have been set up and brought to the control command of the cooling system. Since the system model is designed to evaluate the effect of thermal management on the system performance, it is attempted to determine the proper control algorithm of the cooling system so that the PEMFC system is working on the thermal management criteria. As a result of simulation, feedback controlled cooling system consumes less power and produce more power comparing with that of conventionally controlled cooling system.

열화상 카메라를 적용한 개인 맞춤형 냉각관리 시스템 (Personalized Cooling Management System with Thermal Imaging Camera)

  • 본 논문에서는 열화상 카메라를 적용한 개인 맞춤형 냉각관리 시스템을 제안한다. 제안하는 장비는 열화상 카메라를 이용하여 사용자의 진행 전 피부 온도와 진행 후 피부온도의 차이에 따라 냉기 배출량 및 시스템을 제어한다. 피부의 온도가 비정상적으로 낮아지면 냉기공급을 차단하여 안전사고 발생 가능성을 방지한다. 피부 온도 감지센서를 열화상 카메라 온도측정으로 대체하여 경제적이고, 열화상 이미지로 온도를 확인할 수 있으므로 시각화가 가능하다. 또한, 제안하는 장비는 열화상 카메라를 적용한 개인 맞춤형 냉각관리 시스템의 안전을 위해 레이저 포인터를 듀얼로 사용하여 초점 거리를 산출하여 피부와의 거리를 측정하는 센서의 감도를 개선시킨다. 제안된 장비의 성능을 평가하기 위하여 외부공인 시험기관에서 실험하였다. 첫 번째로 측정된 온도 범위는 -100℃~-160℃로 측정되어, 현재 현장에서 사용되는 최고 수준인 -150~-160℃(cryo generation/미국) 보다 넓은 온도 범위를 나타내었다. 또한 오차는 ±3.2%~±3.5%로 측정되어 현재 현장에서 사용되는 최고 수준인 ±5%(CRYOTOP/중국) 보다 우수한 결과를 나타내었다. 두 번째로 측정된 거리 정확도는 ±4.0% 이하로 측정되어, 현재 현장에서 사용되는 최고 수준인 ±5%(CRYOTOP/중국) 보다 우수한 결과를 나타내었다. 세 번째로 질소 사용량은 최대 0.15 L/min 미만으로 확인되어, 현재 현장에서 사용되는 최고 수준인 6 L/min(POLAR BEAR/미국) 보다 우수한 결과를 나타내었다. 따라서 본 본문에서 제안한 열화상 카메라를 적용한 개인 맞춤형 냉각관리 시스템의 성능의 우수함이 판별되었다.

멀티코어시스템에서의 예측 기반 동적 온도 관리 기법 (A Prediction-Based Dynamic Thermal Management Technique for Multi-Core Systems)

  • The power consumption of a high-end microprocessor increases very rapidly. High power consumption will lead to a rapid increase in the chip temperature as well. If the temperature reaches beyond a certain level, chip operation becomes either slow or unreliable. Therefore various approaches for Dynamic Thermal Management (DTM) have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a learning based temperature prediction scheme for a multi-core system. In this approach, from repeatedly executing an application, we learn the thermal patterns of the chip, and we control the temperature in advance through DTM. When the predicted temperature may go beyond a threshold value, we reduce the temperature by decreasing the operation frequencies of the corresponding core. We implement our temperature prediction on an Intel's Quad-Core system which has integrated digital thermal sensors. A Dynamic Frequency System (DFS) technique is implemented to have four frequency steps on a Linux kernel. We carried out experiments using Phoronix Test Suite benchmarks for Linux. The peak temperature has been reduced by on average $5^{\circ}C{\sim}7^{\circ}C$. The overall average temperature reduced from $72^{\circ}C$ to $65^{\circ}C$.

The information system concept for thermal monitoring of a spent nuclear fuel storage container

  • The paper notes that the most common way of handling spent nuclear fuel (SNF) of power reactors is its temporary long-term dry storage. At the same time, the operation of the dry spent fuel storage facilities almost never use the modern capabilities of information systems in safety control and collecting information for the next studies under implementation of aging management programs. The author proposes a structure of an information system that can be implemented in a dry spent fuel storage facility with ventilated storage containers. To control the thermal component of spent fuel storage safety, a database structure has been developed, which contains 5 tables. An algorithm for monitoring the thermal state of spent fuel was created for the proposed information system, which is based on the comparison of measured and forecast values of the safety criterion, in which the level of heating the ventilation air temperature was chosen. Predictive values of the safety criterion are obtained on the basis of previously published studies. The proposed algorithm is an implementation of the information function of the system. The proposed information system can be used for effective thermal monitoring and collecting information for the next studies under the implementation of aging management programs for spent fuel storage equipment, permanent control of spent fuel storage safety, staff training, etc.

자동차 정션박스의 열성능 개선을 위한 연구 (A Study of the Improvement of Thermal Performance of a Junction Box of a Passenger Car)

  • Thermal management of a junction box of a passenger car has recently become more challenging due to its smaller size and larger current capacity. Thus, it is essential to perform the thermal optimization of a junction box in its design on an early stage of vehicle design. In this study, 3 dimensional CFD simulation with experimental measurement has been done to study for better thermal management of the junction box. First, the study of thermal characteristics of electric relays in the junction box has revealed that each surface of the relay has very different thermal resistance. In addition, an idea to install a cooling fan on the junction box has been studied and it was found that the forced cooling method was not effective on the system to keep the thermal resistance to the reasonable level of the junction box. Finally, the effect of external flows around the junction box on the temperatures of the relays, fuses, etc. has been studied and the result shows that the installation of the junction box at the proper place in an engine room can avoid any unnecessary overdesign in thermal management.

  • 최신의 마이크로프로세서 설계에서는 전력 관련 문제들이 중요한 고려사항이 되었다. 온-칩(On-chip) 온도 상승은 이와 관련하여 중요한 요소로 부각되었다. 이를 적절하게 처리하지 않을 경우 냉각 비용과 칩 신뢰성에 부정적인 결과를 초래한다. 이 논문에서 우리는 시간적/공간적인 핫 스폿(Hot spot) 완화를 위한 설계들과 열 시간 상수, 작업부하 변동, 마이크로프로세서의 전력 분배 사이의 보편적인 상충관계(Trade off)들을 조사한다. 우리의 방안은 작업부하의 실행위치/순서를 변경하고 동시실행 스레드의 수를 조절하여 시스템의 공간 및 시간적인 열 틈새(Heat slack)에 영향을 줌으로써, 운영체계(OS)와 이미 시스템에 존재하는 하드웨어의 지원만으로 적절한 시간제한내에 작업부하를 조절함으로써 온-칩 온도를 낮출 수 있다.

고열유속 소자를 위한 칩 레벨 액체 냉각 연구 (Study of Chip-level Liquid Cooling for High-heat-flux Devices)

  • 고성능 소자의 전력밀도가 증가함에 따라 소자의 열 관리는 주요 핵심 기술로 부각되었고, 기존의 heat sink나 TIM(thermal interface material)으로는 소자의 열 문제를 해결하는데 한계가 있다. 이에 최근에는 열 유속(heat flux)을 증가시키고자 액체 냉각 시스템에 관한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있으며, 본 연구에서는 TSV(through Si via)와 microchannel을 이용하여 칩 레벨 액체 냉각 시스템을 제작하고 시스템의 냉각 특성을 분석하였다. TSV와 microchannel은 Si 웨이퍼에 DRIE(deep reactive ion etching)을 이용하여 공정하였고, 3가지 다른 형상의 TSV를 제작하여 TSV 형상이 냉각 효율에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. TSV와 microchannel 내 액체흐름 형상은 형광현미경으로 관찰하였고, 액체 냉각에 대한 효율은 실온에서 $300^{\circ}C$까지 시편을 가열하면서 적외선현미경을 이용하여 온도를 측정 분석하였다.

High-efficiency deep geological repository system for spent nuclear fuel in Korea with optimized decay heat in a disposal canister and increased thermal limit of bentonite

  • To use nuclear energy sustainably, spent nuclear fuel, classified as high-level radioactive waste and inevitably discharged after electricity generation by nuclear power plants, must be managed safely and isolated from the human environment. In Korea, the land area is limited and the amount of high-level radioactive waste, including spent nuclear fuels to be disposed, is relatively large. Thus, it is particularly necessary to maximize disposal efficiency. In this study, a high-efficiency deep geological repository concept was developed to enhance disposal efficiency. To this end, design strategies and requirements for a high-efficiency deep geological repository system were established, and engineered barrier modules with a disposal canister for pressurized water reactor (PWR)-type and pressurized heavy water reactor type Canada deuterium uranium (CANDU) plants were developed. Thermal and structural stability assessments were conducted for the repository system; it was confirmed that the system was suitable for the established strategies and requirements. In addition, the results of the nuclear safety assessment showed that the radiological safety of the new system met the Korean safety standards for disposal of high-level radioactive waste in terms of radiological dose. To evaluate disposal efficiency in terms of the disposal area, the layout of the developed disposal areas was assessed in terms of thermal limits. The estimated disposal areas were 2.51 km2 and 1.82 km2 (existing repository system: 4.57 km2) and the excavated host rock volumes were 2.7 Mm3 and 2.0 Mm3 (existing repository system: 4.5 Mm3) for thermal limits of 100 ℃ and 130 ℃, respectively. These results indicated that the area and the excavated volume of the new repository system were reduced by 40-60% compared to the existing repository system. In addition, methods to further improve the efficiency were derived for the disposal area for deep geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel. The results of this study are expected to be useful in establishing a national high-level radioactive waste management policy, and for the design of a commercial deep geological repository system for spent nuclear fuels.

전기 자동차 가상 플랫폼용 배터리 모델 개발 및 검증 (Development of a Battery Model for Electric Vehicle Virtual Platform)

  • In this paper, a battery model for electric vehicle virtual platform was developed. A battery model consisted of a battery cell model and battery thermal management system. A battery cell model was developed based on Randles equivalent circuit model. Circuit parameters in the form of 3D map data was obtained by charge-discharge experiment of Li-Polymer battery in various temperature condition. The developed battery cell model was experimentally verified by comparing voltages. Thermal management system model was also developed using heat generator, heat transfer and convection model, and cooling fan. For verification of the developed battery model in vehicle level, the integrated battery model was applied in to EV(electric vehicle) virtual platform, and virtual driving simulation using UDDS velocity profile was conducted. The accuracy of the developed battery model has been verified by comparing the simulation results from EV platform with the experimental data.
