In this paper an application technique of moment equation method to solution of nonlinear rolling equation of motion of ships is investigated. The exciting moment in the equation of rolling motion of ships is described as non-white noise. This non-white exciting moment is generated through use of a shaping filter. These coupled equations are used to generate moment equations. The nonstationary responses of the nonlinear system are obtained. The results are compared with those of a linear system.
In this paper chaotic mothions of a straight pipe conveying oscillatory flow and being subjected to external forces such as earthquake are theoretically investigated. The nonlinear partial differential equation of motion is derived by Newton's method. In this equation, the nonlinear curvature of the pipe and the thermal expansion effects are contained. The nonlinear ordinary differential equation transformed from that partial differential equation is a type of Hill's equations, which have the parametric and external exciation term. This original system is transfered to the averaged system by the averaging theory. Bifurcation curves of chaotic motion of the piping system are obtained in the general case of the frequency ratio, n by applying Melnikov's method. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate theorectical results and show strange attactors of the chaotic motion.

This paper presents a historical study on the derivation of the differential equation of motion for the single-degree-of-freedom m-k system with the harmonic excitation. It was Euler for the first time in the history of vibration theory who tackled the equation of motion for that system analytically, then gave the solution of the free vibration and described the resonance phenomena of the forced vibration in his famous paper E126 of 1739. As a result of the chronological progress in mechanics like pendulum condition from Galileo to Euler, the author asserts two conjectures that Euler could apply to obtain the equation of motion at that time.

Control Moment Gyro (CMG) has been used as an indirect actuator of a single-wheel robot system GYROBO, developed at Chungnam National University. The flip motion of the gimbal system produces the gyroscopic motion onto the body system while the body motion also produces the gyroscopic motion onto the gimbal system inversely. In this paper, the intuitive equation of the inverse gyroscopic effect is derived as the direct relation between the rate of the body system and the rate of the gimbal system. Experiments on the inverse gyroscopic effect under the chaotically generated disturbance are conducted. Experimental data are approximated by a linear equation using the least square method.
In this paper, we study the response of several anisotropic systems to buried transient line loads. The problem is mathematically formulated based on the equations of motion in the constitutive relations. The load is in form of a normal stress acting with arbitrary axis on the plane of monoclinic symmetry. Plane wave equation is coupled with vertical shear wave, longitudinal wave and horizontal shear wave. We first considered the equation of motion in reference coordinate system, where the line load is coincident with symmetry axis of the orthotrioic material. Then the equation of motion is transformed with respect to general coordiante system with azimuthal angle by using transformation tensor. The load is first described as a body force in the equations of the motion for the infinite media and then it is mathematically characterized. Subsequently the results for semi-infinite spaces is also obtained by using superposition of the infinite medium solution together with a scattered solution from the free surface. Consequently explicit solutions for the displacements are obtained by using Cargniard-DeHoop contour. Numerical results which are drawn from concrete examples of orthotropic material belonging to monoclinic symmetry are demonstrated.

The purpose of this paper is to develop methods for the dynamic analysis of multibody system that consist of interconnected rigid and deformable component. The equations of motion are derived by using the Lagrange's equation and finite element theory for the elastic mechanism systems. The type of equation of motion is the differential algebraic equation included kinematic nonlinear algebraic equation. The generalized coordinate partitioning method is used for solving this equation. To show the validity of this analysis solver, couple of models were canalized and those results were compared with the commercial package(ADAMS).

Main sources of the vibration in gear driving system are transmission error and backlash. Transmission error is the difference of the rotation between driving and driven gear due to tooth deformation and profile error. Vibro-impacts induced by backlash between meshing gears lead to excessive vibration and noise in many geared rotation systems. Nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the gear driving system due to transmi- ssion error and backlash are investigated. Transmission error is calculated for spur gear. Nonlinear equation of motion for the gear driving system is developed with the calculated transmission error and backlash. Numerical analysis of the equation and the experimental results show the existence of meshing frequency, superharmonic compon- ents. Instability of the gear driving motion is found on the basis of Mathieu equation. Rattle vibration due to backlash is also discussed on the basis if nonlinear jump phenomenon.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of stride time and stride length provided by a commercial APDM inertial sensor system (APDM) with the results of three dimensional motion capture system (3D motion) during treadmill walking. Method: Five healthy men participated in this experiment. All subjects walked on the treadmill for 3 minutes at their preferred walking speed. The 3D motion and the APDM were simultaneously used for extracting gait variables such as stride time and stride length. Mean difference and root mean squared (RMS) difference were used to compare the measured gait variables from the two measurement devices. The regression equation derived from the range of motion of the lower limb was also applied to correct the error of stride length. Results: The stride time extracted from the APDM was almost the same as that from the 3D motion (the mean difference and RMS difference were less than 0.0001 sec and 0.0085 sec, respectively). For stride length, mean difference and RMS difference were less than 0.1141 m and 0.1254 m, respectively. However, after correction of the stride length error using the derived regression equation, the mean difference and the RMS difference decreased to 0.0134 m and 0.0556 m or less, respectively. Conclusion: In this study, we confirmed the possibility of using the temporal variables provided from the APDM during treadmill walking. By applying the regression equation derived only from the range of motion provided by the APDM, the error of the spatial variable could be reduced. Although further studies are needed with additional subjects and various walking speeds, these results may provide the basic data necessary for using APDM in treadmill walking.

This paper presents the calculation of opening characteristics for puffer GCB with the equations of the flow field and the motion of the driving mechanism. To obtain the stroke curve, the motion equation is solved simultaneously with the Euler equations. For a given Piston location, the flow field is solved. The pressure inside the Puffer chamber is then used to calculate the moving velocity and the new position of the piston. The FVFLIC method is employed to solve the axisymmetric Euler equations and the motion equation is solved by the Runge-Kutta method. The method is applied to the puffer GCB model and the stroke curve and the pressure rise in puffer chamber under no load condition are compared with the measured ones.

The FPSO is moored by mooring lines to keep the position of it. The nonlinear motion analysis of the moored FPSO must be carried out in the initial design stage because sea environments affect motion of it. In this paper, the mathematical model is based on the slow motion maneuvering equations in the horizontal plane considering wave, current and wind forces. The direct integration method is employed to estimate wave loads. The current forces are calculated by using mathematical model of MMG. The turret mooring forces are quasi-statically evaluated by using the catenary equation. The coefficients of a model for wind forces are calculated from Isherwood's experimental data and the variation of wind speed is estimated by wind spectrum according to the guidelines of API-RP2A. The nonlinear motions of FPSO are simulated under external forces due to wave, current, wind including mooring forces in time domain.
