  • The Systems Engineering (SE) approach is characterized by the application of a structured engineering methodology for the design of a complex system or component. In this study, the SE methodology is used to design a nondestructive inspection system for Bottom Mounted Instrumentation (BMI) nozzles. We developed a system that enables nondestructive inspection of BMI nozzles during regular refueling outage without removing the reactor internals. A special ultrasonic (UT) probe is introduced to scan and detect cracks within the weld region of the nozzle. A 3D model of the inspection structure system was developed along with the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) and internals which permits a virtual 3D simulation of the operation to check the design concept and effectiveness of the system and to provide a good visualization of the system. This approach allows for a virtual walk through to verify the proposed BMI nozzle inspection system.

  • The major challenge of designing public halls or performing arts centers in Japan is meeting the expectations of the regional community; greater stakeholder involvement is required in order to solve this problem. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether stakeholders can become more involved in public hall design by using systems engineering (SE), which has never before been applied when designing public halls. As such, this study redesigned an actual public hall (Iwaki Alios) using an SE approach. The results revealed that applying SE was effective in the creation of a public hall concept.

  • To Manage the Defense Acquisition Process more efficiently, DAPA has looked over the applying SE process to the Eagle Acquisition Program. Based on comparing 'Requirement' with 'items suggested in the proposal' in RFP and analyzing the result by using Cradle, those items have been discovered with IPT, actualized and corrected. In addition, the computerized data base system makes easier to trace all changed and more efficiency to manage programs. Therefore, this study using SE in other acquisition program.

  • This paper is a practical study on the development of SEMP template using SE & SW infrastructures. SEMP, which is a management system for systems engineers, has been developed for the LRT(Light Rail Transit) industry and has been tailored to suit domestic conditions. SE & SW infrastructures were developed to assist in creating an effective and efficient SEMP for the industry of this study. This paper proposes a method to reduce costs, manpower, and time for the LRT industry using SEMP based on SE & SW infrastructures.

  • $Cu_2ZnSn(S,Se)_4$ material is receiving an increased amount of attention for solar cell applications as an absorber layer because it consists of inexpensive and abundant materials (Zn and Sn) instead of the expensive and rare materials (In and Ga) in $Cu(In,Ga)Se_2$ solar cells. We were able to achieve a cell conversion efficiency to 4.7% by the selenization of a stacked metal precursor with the Cu/(Zn + Sn)/Mo/glass structure. However, the selenization of the metal precursor results in large voids at the absorber/Mo interface because metals diffuse out through the top CZTSe layer. To avoid the voids at the absorber/Mo interface, binary selenide compounds of ZnSe and $SnSe_2$ were employed as a precursor instead of Zn and Sn metals. It was found that the precursor with Cu/$SnSe_2$/ZnSe stack provided a uniform film with larger grains compared to that with $Cu_2Se/SnSe_2$/ZnSe stack. Also, voids were not observed at the $Cu_2ZnSnSe_4$/Mo interface. A severe loss of Sn was observed after a high-temperature annealing process, suggesting that selenization in this case should be performed in a closed system with a uniform temperature in a $SnSe_2$ environment. However, in the experiments, Cu top-layer stack had more of an effect on reducing Sn loss compared to $Cu_2Se$ top-layer stack.

  • Hardware for monitoring the water quality using water fleas is developed. Water flea is a frequently used biological sensor for monitoring the water quality. Water fleas quickly respond to the incoming toxic water by changing their activity when they are exposed. By measuring the activity of water fleas, the incoming toxic water is instantly detected. So far the measurement of activity of water fleas has been done with a system equipped with both a light source of LED and a light detector of photo transistor. Water flea itself is, however, sensitive to light resulting in incorrect response and the system has two inconvenient separate parts of the light source and the detector. This paper suggests a system using a CCD camera instead of a light source and a detector. The suggested system processes the image data from the CCD camera in real time without any delay. The developed system becomes a part of the remote water monitoring embedded system.

  • Including 425 Program, which is Korean military surveillance and reconnaissance satellite, there were mostly civil-driven space programs in Korea. However, there are increasing numbers of military demand-driven space program in nowadays. Furthermore, it is positive effects on launch vehicle development in Korea that the termination of Korea-U.S. missile guideline. In this paper, it emphasizes the needs of system engineering(SE) management method which meets both defense system's characteristics and space's characteristics. These characteristics are such as non-fixable after the launch, the security issue in defense system. And it also introduces SE tool, methodology and its philosophy. There are several functions that data management, issue management, risk management, and technical requirement management. Also describing its implications and direction of improvement.

  • The photvoltaic power system has received considerable attention as the petroleumalterative energies to the environmental problems in the wored scale. $CuLnSe_2$is one ofthe most promising materials for the fabrication of large-area modules and low cost photovoltaic devices. Sulfur solute CuInSe2 thin films were prepared by RF sputtering using powder targer which were previously compacted by powder of $Cu_2Se, \;In_2Se_3, \;Cu_2S, \;and\;In_2S_3$ in various ratios. The results induicated that the sulfur ratio, the(112) texture, and the energy band gap were increased by the increase of the S/(S+Se) that was controlled by stoichiometric compound. The energy band gap can be shifted from 1.04eV to 1.50eV by abjusting the S/(S+Se) ratio, which maich it possible to obtain perfect match to the solar spectrum.

  • A pressurizer is a major equipment system in a nuclear power plant (NPP) and controls the reactor cooling system pressure within the allowable range. Faults in the pressurizer can be critical to the NPP; therefore, early fault detection in the pressurizer is significant for NPP safety. This study applies Mahalanobis Taguchi system (MTS), which is one of the promising pattern classification methods, based on the Mahalanobis distance concept and Taguchi quality engineering theory to the early fault detection problem of the pressurizer pressure control system. We conducted experiments using data from full scope NPP simulator based on a pressurizer pressure transmitter faults scenario to validate the faults detection performance of MTS. As a result, MTS can rapidly detect the faults compared to conventional faults detection based on single sensor monitoring.
