The silica coated $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles have been synthesized using a micro-emulsion method. The $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles with the sizes 6 nm in diameter were synthesized by thermal decomposition method. Hydrophobic $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles were coated silica using surfactant and tetraethyl orthosilicated (TEOS) as a $SiO_2$ precursor. Shell thickness of silica coated $Fe_3O_4$ can be controlled (11~20 nm) through our synthetic conditions. The $Fe_3O_4$ and silica coated $Fe_3O_4$ nano powders were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and vortex magnetic separation (VMS).
The effects of mixing geometry (intermeshing vs. tangential rotor) for the dispersion and distribution of silica agglomerates in SBR/BR compound were investigated. Silica dispersion and distribution were found to be better with the intermeshing rotor compared to the tangential rotor. It was concluded that the intermeshing rotor compared to the tangential rotor delivered a higher shear stress due to interlocked rotor geometry to silica agglomerates leading to better dispersity and distribution of silica in the agglomerates.
X-ray powder diffraction is one of the most powerful techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis of crystalline compounds. Thus, there exist a number of different methods for quantifying mineral mixtures using X-ray diffraction pattern. We present here the use of Rietveld and PONKCS (partial or no known crystal structure) methods for quantification of amorphous and crystallized mineral phases in synthetic mixtures of standard minerals (amorphous silica, quartz, mullite and corundum). Pawley phase model of amorphous silica was successfully built from the pattern of 100 wt% amorphous silica and internal standard-spiked samples by PONKCS approach. The average of absolute bias for quantities of amorphous silica was 1.85 wt%. The larger bias observed for lower quantities of amorphous silica is probably explained by low intensities of diffraction pattern. Averages of absolute bias for minerals were 0.53 wt% for quartz, 0.87 wt% for mullite and 0.57 wt% for corundum, respectively. The PONKCS approach achieved improved quantitative results compared with classical Rietveld method by using an internal standard.

Crack-free hard coating siIica films were prepared by sol-gel processfrom twokinds of silicon alkoxide (tetra-ethoxysilane and methyltrimethoxysilane) and two kinds of alcohol (methanol and isopropyl alcohol) with an acid catalyst, acetic acid. A silicate framework of the precursor solution was investigated by infrared spectros-copy (IR) in the process of hydrolysis and condensation. Theextent of the condensation in the intermediates was elucidated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 29Si-NMR spectroscopy. The hard coating films werecharacterized by IR,scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and dif-ferential scanning calroimeter (DSC). The synthetic condition for the crack-free and transparent silica film for-mation was optimized interms of starting materials for the precursor solution as well as preparation method of the silica film.
The term 'thermal insulating materials' describes a class of materials which can improve the thermal efficiency by reducing the thermal conduction, convention and radiation between the inside and outside of the system. As a thermal insulating material, numerous industrial applications are possible including the automobile, aerospace, aviation, and petrochemical. Especially, the silica aerogel, with their superior thermal insulating behavior, has been widely used as thermal insulating materials. Because the mechanical properties of the silica aerogel cannot meet the industrial demand, use of the silica aerogel is limited. This article aims to review the thermal insulating materials and silica aerogel, and to introduce the silica aerogel/polymer composites.
This study demonstrates a method for synthesis of amine functionalized and easily size controllable silica nanoparticles through biomimetic polyamine complex. First, we generate a polyamine nanocomplex composed of polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) and phosphate ion (pi) to synthesize silica nanoparticles. The size of polyamine nanocomplex is reversibly adjusted within the range of about 50 to 300 nm according to the pH conditions. Amine groups of the PAH in the nanocomplex catalyzes the condensation reaction of silicic acid. As a results, silica nanoparticles are synthesized based on nanocomplex in a very short time. Finally, we synthesize silica nanoparticles with various sizes according to the pH conditions. In the process of synthesizing silica nanoparticles, polyamine chains that act as catalysts are incorporated into the inside and surface of the particles, subsequently, amine groups are exposed on the surface of silica nanoparticles. As a results, the synthesis and surface modification of silica nanoparticles are performed simultaneously, and the silica nanoparticles introduced with amine groups can be easily synthesized by adjusting the sizes of the silica nanoparticles. Finally, we demonstrate the synthesis of functional silica nanoparticles in a short time under milder conditions than the conventional synthetic method. Furthermore, this method can be applicable to bioengineering and materials fields.

The main stability factors of the pressed powder include hardness and drop stability. In general, for pressed powder with talc, the hardness and drop stability are evenly met and the skin texture is excellent. Recently, more than ever customers are looking for a replacement due to asbestos issue of talc. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a pressed powder formulation without talc that maintains stability and does not lose its sense of use. In this study, experiments were conducted to find the optimal ingredients mixing ratio to make talc-free pressed powder. The characteristics of raw materials used mainly in powder were checked and the ratio was changed, and the lightness and hardness were measured and drop test was conducted. If the natural mica ratio was higher than the synthetic mica or non-coated silica was used instead of the coated silica, the hardness and drop stability were lower than the content containing talc, but the lightness was similar. Conversely, if the synthetic mica ratio was equal to or higher than the natural mica ratio and the coated silica ratio was equal to or higher than the non-coated silica ratio, the hardness and drop stability of the content containing talc were similar, but the lightness was low. It was found that the hardness was higher than the content containing talc, but the drop stability was lower. Therefore, further study of the correlation between hardness and fall stability is also thought to be necessary.
Whisker-type magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate ($5Mg(OH)_2{\cdot}MgSO_4{\cdot}3H_2O$, abbreviated 513 MHSH), is used in filler and flame-retardant composites based on its hydrate phase and its ability to undergo endothermic dehydration in fire conditions, respectively. In general, the length of whiskers is determined according to various synthetic conditions in a hydrothermal reaction with high temperature (${\sim}180^{\circ}C$). In this work, high-quality 513 MHSH whiskers are synthesized by controlling the concentration of the raw material in ambient conditions without high pressure. Particularly, the concentration of the starting material is closely related to the length, width, and purity of MHSH. In addition, a ceramic-coating system is adopted to enhance the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the MHSH whiskers. The physical properties of the silica-coated MHSH are characterized by an abrasion test, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy.
Two different kinds of cases, with and without addition of noncrystalline silica to the Hadong kaolin were studied to obtain useful information on the synthesis of zeolite. The research was carried out to investigate the formation area and the crystalized degree of zeolite according to a synthetic time, the water content of raw material mixture, KOH concentration, and stirring intensity. In the case of without addition of noncrystalline silica to the Hadong kaolin and the low concentration range of KOH, the structure of the kaolin was not changed. However, when the mole ratio of K2O/SiO$_2$ in natural kaolin was increased, Linde-L zeolite and unknown structure of kaolins, U-1 and U-2 were produced. While in the high concentration range of KOH, the unknown structure of kaolins, U-6 and U-2, were produced and the production rate of U-6 was increased with the increased of K2O/SiO$_2$ mole ratio. In the case of with addition of noncrystalline silica to the Hadong kaolin and treatment with KOH hydrothermal processing, ZSM-5, ZSM-35, and Linde-L zeolites and the mixture of unknown structure of zeolites, U-1, U-2, U-3, and U-4, were obtained. Both cases demonstrated that the synthesis of zeolite from the Hadong kaolin was highly influenced by KOH concentration of raw material mixture.
$Si_3$$N_4$ ceramics have been identified as one of the promising structural ceramics. This study has been carried out to investigate of the synthetic behaviors of $Si_3$$N_4$ derived from domestic silica-stone by direct nitriding method. The silicon nitridation reaction has been studied in the temperature range of $1300~1550^{\circ}C$. Below the $1400^{\circ}C$, the nitriding rate was measured to be 16%. For the temperatures higher than the $1400^{\circ}C$, $\beta$-$Si_3$$N_4$ phase was formed mainly, and the nitriding rate showed above 98%. With the increasing of sample weight of silicon powder, the nitriding rate and $\beta$-$Si_3$$N_4$ phase increased at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The shape and particle size of$ Si_3$$N_4$ powder synthesized at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours showed the irregular angular-type and 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively.
