Increasing demand for natural gas and higher natural gas prices in the recent decades have led many people to pursue unconventional methods of natural gas production. POSCO-Gwangyang synthetic natural gas (SNG) project was launched in 2010. As the market price of natural gas goes up, the increase of its price gets more sensitive due to the high cost of transportation and liquefaction. This project can make the SNG economically viable. In parallel with this project, KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) joined in launching the SNG Quality Standard Bureau along with KOGAS (Korea Gas Corporation), POSCO and so on. KEPCO Research Institute is in charge of SNG fueled gas turbine combustion test. In this research, several combustion tests were conducted to find out the effect of hydrogen contents in SNG on gas turbine combustion. The hydrogen in synthetic natural gas did not affect on gas turbine combustion characteristics which are turbine inlet temperature including pattern factor and emission performance. However, flame stable region in ${\Phi}$-Air flow rate map was shifted to the lean condition due to autocatalytic effect of hydrogen.

The purpose of this study is to reduce harmful emission gases in the range of stable combustion without loss of a thermal efficiency. Therefore, effects of both exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) and synthetic gas addition on engine performance and emission were investigated in a gasoline engine. Synthetic gas(syngas), which is in general prepared from reforming gasoline, was utilized in order to promote stable combustion. The major components of syngas are H2, CO and $N_2$ gases. The percentage of syngas addition was changed from 0 to 30% in energy fraction and EGR rate was varied up to 30%. As a result, $COV_{IMEP}$ as a parameter of combustion stability was decreased and THC/$NO_X$ emissions were reduced with the increase of syngas addition. And $COV_{IMEP}$ was increased with the increase of EGR but $NO_X$ emission was greatly reduced. In addition, under the region where the EGR rate is around 20%, thermal efficiency was improved.
Synthetic natural gas(SNG), acquired from coal, is regarded as an alternative to natural gas since a rise in natural gas due to high oil price can be coped with it. In the present study, 11-liter heavy duty compressed natural gas(CNG) engine was employed in order to examine the combustion and emission characteristics of SNG. The simulated SNG, made up 90.95% of methane, 6.05% propane and 3% hydrogen was used in the experiment. Power output, thermal efficiency, combustion stability and emission characteristics were compared to those with CNG at the same engine operating conditions. Knocking phenomenon was also analyzed at 1260 rpm, full load condition. Combustion with SNG was more stable than CNG. Nitrogen oxides emissions increased while Carbon dioxides emissions decreased. Anti-knocking characteristics were improved with SNG.
Theoretical analysis was conducted on the combustion and the NOx formation characteristics of the coal-derived synthetic gases with medium-BTU heating value. The synthetic gas was assumed to contain the major species of CO, $H_2,\;CO_2$, and $N_2$ and the minor species of $CH_4$ and $NH_3$. Through thermochemical analysis on the combustion of the synthetic gas, the flame temperature, major and minor species of exhaust gas, and thermal and fuel NOx emissions were computed. In addition, the effects of the $CH_4$ and the $NH_3$ components in syngas fuel on combustion and NOx emission were investigated. Based on the computed results on the synthetic gases, basic direction and guidelines were provided fur the low NOx design of gas turbine combustor.
Numerical study is conducted to predict effects of radiative heat loss and fuel composition in synthetic gas diffusion flame diluted with $CO_2$. The existing reaction models in synthetic gas flames diluted with $CO_2$ are evaluated. Numerical simulations with and without gas radiation, based on an optical thin model, are also performed to concrete impacts on effects of radiative heat loss in flame characteristics. Importantly contributing reaction steps to heat release rate are compared for synthetic gas flames with and without $CO_2$ dilution. It is also addressed that the composition of synthetic gas mixtures and their radiative heat losses through the addition of $CO_2$ modify the reaction pathways of oxidation diluted with $CO_2$.

Since regulations of exhaust emissions are continuously reinforced, studies to reduce harmful emissions during the cold start period of SI engines have been carried out very extensively worldwide. During the cold start period, raising the temperature of cold exhaust gas is a key strategy to minimize the light-off time of three way catalysts. In this study, a synthetic gas containing a large amount of hydrogen was injected into the exhaust manifold to raise the exhaust gas temperature and to reduce harmful emissions. The authors tried to evaluate changes in exhaust gas temperature and harmful emissions through controlling the engine operating parameters such as ignition timings and lambda values. Also the authors investigated both combustion stability and reduction of harmful emissions. Experimental results showed that combustion of the synthetic gas in the exhaust manifold is a very effective way for solving the problems of harmful emissions and light-off time. The results also showed that the strategy of retarded ignition timings and increased air/fuel ratios with ESGI is effective in raising exhaust gas temperature and reducing harmful emissions. Futhermore, the results showed that engine operating parameters ought to be controlled to lambda = 1.2 and ignition timing = $0{\sim}3^{\circ}$ conditions to reduce harmful emissions effectively under stable combustion conditions.
The combustion instability was experimentally investigated in model gas turbine combustor with dual swirl burner. When such instability occurs, a strong coupling between pressure oscillation and unsteady heat release excites a self-sustained acoustic wave which results in a loud sound, and can even cause fatal damage to the combustor and entire system. In present study, to understand the combustion instability with a premixed mixture, the detailed periods of pressure and heat release data in unstable flame mode were investigated by various measurement methods at relatively rich condition and lean condition near flammable limits. Also, to prepare the utilization of synthetic natural gas (SNG) fuel in gas turbine system, an investigation was conducted using a simulated SNG including methane as a reference fuel to examine the effects of $H_2$ content on flame stability. These results provide that the instability due to flash-back behaviour like CIVB phenomenon occurred at rich condition, while the repetition of relighting and extinction caused the oscillation of lean condition near flammable limit. From the analysis of $H_2$ content effects, it is also confirmed that the instability frequency is proportional to the laminar burning velocity at both rich and lean condition.
Experiments on burning process of the industrial wastes were performed on a nozzle-type grate in the industrial waste incinerator with a capacity of 160 kilograms per hour. The temporal variations of temperatures and concentrations of the exhaust gas were measured and analyzed. The synthetic leather waste with the moisture content less than 2% was used. The experimental results show that the CO concentration in the exhaust gas exceeds the limit, 600 ppm, and the gas temperature fluctuates too much when 8 kg of waste was supplied every 3 minutes, equivalent to the capacity of 160kg per hour. That is a typical burning mode of this high-calorific industrial waste. When the smaller unit waste input, 6kg per every 2 min 15 seconds was supplied, we could reduce the fluctuations of the furnace temperature and improve the exhaust emissions, especially the CO concentration.

Experimental studies are conducted to investigate the flame stability and the thermal/fuel NOx formation characteristics of the low calorific value (LCV) coal derived gas fuel. Synthetic LCV fuel gas is produced by mixing carbon monoxide, hydrogen, nitrogen and ammonia on the basis that the thermal input of the syngas fuel into a burner is identical to that of natural gas. The syngas mixture is fed to and burnt with air on flat flame burner. With the variation of the equivalence ratio for specific syngas fuel, flame behaviors are observed to identify the flame instability due to blow-off or flashback and to define stable combustion range. Measurements of NOx content in combustion gas are made for comparing thermal and fuel NOx from the LCV syngas combustion with those of the natural gas one. In addition, the nitrogen dilution of the LCV syngas is preliminarily attempted as a NOx reduction technique, and its effects on thermal and fuel NOx production are discussed.
