  • There are many researches on post-processing methods for the Korean continuous speech recognition enhancement using natural language processing techniques. It is very difficult to use a formal morphological analyzer for improving the speech recognition because the analysis technique of natural language processing is mainly for formal written languages. In this paper, we propose a speech recognition enhancement model using syntactic unit of morphemes. This approach uses the functional word level longest match which dose not consider spacing words. We describe the post-processing mechanism for the improving speech recognition by using proposed model which uses the relationship of phonological structure information between predicates md auxiliary predicates or bound nouns that are frequently occurred in Korean sentences.

  • As pact of a long-ranged project that aims at establishing database-theoretic semantics as a model of computational semantics, this presentation focuses on the development of a syntactic component for processing strings of words or sentences to construct semantic data structures. For design arid modeling purposes, the present treatment will be restricted to the analysis of some problematic constructions of Korean involving semi-free word order, conjunction arid temporal anchoring, and adnominal modification and antecedent binding. The present work heavily relies on Hausser's (1999, 2000) SLIM theory for language that is based on surface compositionality, time-linearity arid two other conditions on natural language processing. Time-linear syntax for natural language has been shown to be conceptually simple and computationally efficient. The associated semantics is complex, however, because it must deal with situated language involving interactive multi-agents. Nevertheless, by processing input word strings in a time-linear mode, the syntax cart incrementally construct the necessary semantic structures for relevant queries and valid inferences. The fragment of Korean syntax will be implemented in Malaga, a C-type implementation language that was enriched for both programming and debugging purposes arid that was particluarly made suitable for implementing in Left-Associative Grammar. This presentation will show how the system of syntactic rules with constraining subrules processes Korean sentences in a step-by-step time-linear manner to incrementally construct semantic data structures that mainly specify relations with their argument, temporal, and binding structures.

  • The longer the input sentences, the worse the parsing results. To improve the parsing performance, many methods about long sentence segmentation have been reserarched. As an isolating language, Chinese sentence has fewer cues for sentence segmentation. However, the average frequency of comma usage in Chinese is higher than that of other languages. The syntactic information that the comma conveys can play an important role in long sentence segmentation of Chinese languages. This paper proposes a method for classifying commas in Chinese sentences according to the context where the comma occurs. Then, sentences are segmented using the classification result. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the comma classification reaches 87.1%, and with our segmentation model, the dependency parsing accuracy of our parser is improved by 5.6%.

  • We propose a fast and powerful Question-answering (QA) system in Korean, which uses a predictive answer indexer based on 2-pass scoring method. The indexing process is as follows. The predictive answer indexer first extracts all answer candidates in a document. Then, using 2-pass scoring method, it gives scores to the adjacent content words that are closely related with each answer candidate. Next, it stores the weighted content words with each candidate into a database. Using this technique, along with a complementary analysis of questions which is based on lexico-syntactic pattern matching method, the proposed QA system saves response time and enhances the precision.

  • The argument-structure distributions of predicates in the speech of two roca-type aphasic patients and one Conduction-type patient are compared with both matched controls and each other on the basis of narrative production data. Whereas English-speaking agrammatics have been reported to have difficulties producing noncopular unaccusative predicates (Kegl 1995) Korean-speaking agrammatics are found not to have particular difficulties with unaccusative predicates. On the assumption that agrammatics lack specific syntactic knowledge for the processing of displaced arguments from their lexically specified positions. it is proposed that unaccusatives in Korean do not involve the displacement of arguments for Case-theoretic reasons or involve a vacuous movement. if any.

  • This paper describes a multi-step method of intonation modeling for corpus-based Korean speech synthesizer. We selected 1833 sentences considering various syntactic structures and built a corresponding speech corpus uttered by a female announcer. We detected the pitch using laryngograph signals and manually marked the prosodic boundaries on recorded speech, and carried out the tagging of part-of-speech and syntactic analysis on the text. The detected pitch was separated into 3 frequency bands of low, mid, high frequency components which correspond to the baseline, the word tone, and the syllable tone. We predicted them using the CART method and the Viterbi search algorithm with a word-tone-dictionary. In the collected spoken sentences, 1500 sentences were trained and 333 sentences were tested. In the layer of word tone modeling, we compared two methods. One is to predict the word tone corresponding to the mid-frequency components directly and the other is to predict it by multiplying the ratio of the word tone to the baseline by the baseline. The former method resulted in a mean error of 12.37 Hz and the latter in one of 12.41 Hz, similar to each other. In the layer of syllable tone modeling, it resulted in a mean error rate less than 8.3% comparing with the mean pitch, 193.56 Hz of the announcer, so its performance was relatively good.

  • This paper analyzes the recognition of driver's behavior in lane change using context-free grammar. In contrast to conventional pattern recognition techniques, context-free grammars are capable of describing features effectively that are not easily represented by finite symbols. Instead of coordinate data processing that should handle features in multiple concurrent events respectively, effective syntactic analysis was applied for patterning of symbolic sequence. The findings proposed the effective and intuitive method for drivers and researchers in driving safety field. Probabilistic parsing for the improving this research will be the future work to achieve a robust recognition.

  • In this paper, we propose an integrated indexing method with compound noun segmentation and noun phrase synthesis. Statistical information is used in the compound noun segmentation and natural language processing techniques are carefully utilized in the noun phrase synthesis. Firstly, we choose index terms from simple words through morphological analysis and part-of-speech tagging results. Secondly, noun phrases are automatically synthesized from the syntactic analysis results. If syntactic analysis fails, only morphological analysis and tagging results are applied. Thirdly, we select compound nouns from the tagging results and then segment and re-synthesize them using statistical information. In this way, segmented and synthesized terms are used together as index terms to supplement the single terms. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed integrated indexing method for Korean compound noun processing using KTSET2.0 and KRIST SET which are a standard test collection for Korean information retrieval.

  • This paper presents an efficient construction method of determination rules of thematic roles from syntactic relations in Korean language processing. This process is one of the main core of semantic analysis and an important issue to be solved in natural language processing. It is problematic to describe rules for determining thematic roles by only using general linguistic knowledge and experience, since the final result may be different according to the subjective views of researchers, and it is impossible to construct rules to cover all cases. However, our method is objective and efficient by considering large corpora, which contain practical osages of Korean language, and case frames in the Sejong Electronic Lexicon of Korean, which is being developed by dozens of Korean linguistic researchers. To determine thematic roles more correctly, our system uses syntactic relations, semantic classes, morpheme information, position of double subject. Especially by using semantic classes, we can increase the applicability of the rules.

  • As the main mathematical concepts are presented and expressed in various ways through textbooks during the teaching and learning process, it is necessary to look at the representations used in elementary math textbooks to find effective guidance. This study analyzed sentences used in the definition of mathematical terms and unit assessments of current elementary mathematics textbooks according to word depth (Yngve, 1960) from a syntactic perspective. As a result of the analysis, it could be seen that the sentences in textbook were generally concise, the word depth was lower, and the sentence structure and form were different depending on the individual characteristics of each term. Also, the sentences in the lower grade textbooks were more easily constructed, and the sentences of the term definition were more complex than the sentences of the unit assessments. Efforts should be made to help learners learn mathematical concepts, such as clarifying sentences in textbooks, presenting visual materials together, and providing additional explanations to suit the level of individual learners.
