Most of Korean sentences are complex sentences which consisted of main clause and embedded clause. These complex sentences have more than one predicate and this causes various syntactic ambiguities in syntactic analysis. These ambiguities are caused by phrase attachment problems which are occurred by the modifying scope of embedded clause. To resolve it, we decide the scope of embedded clause in the sentence and consider this clause as a unit of syntactic category. In this paper, we use sentence patterns information(SPI) and syntactic properties of Korean to decide a scope of embedded clause. First, we split the complex sentence into embedded clause and main clause by the method that embedded clause must have maximal arguments. This work is done by the SPI of the predicate in the embedded clause. And then, the role of this embedded clause is converted into a noun phrases or adverbial phrases in the main clause by the properties of Korean syntax. By this method, the structure of complex sentence is exchanged into a clause. And some phrases attachment problem, which is mainly caused by the modifying scope, is resolved easily. In this paper, we call this method clausal segmentation for embedded clause. By empirical results of parsing 1000 sentences, we found that our method decreases 88.32% of syntactic ambiguities compared to the method that doesn't use SPI and split the sentence with basic clauses.

In this study we leveraged a probing method to evaluate how a pre-trained L2 LSTM language model represents sentences with relative and coordinate clauses. The probing experiment employed adapted models based on the pre-trained L2 language models to trace the syntactic properties of sentence embedding vector representations. The dataset for probing was automatically generated using several templates related to different sentence structures. To classify the syntactic properties of sentences for each probing task, we measured the adaptation effects of the language models using syntactic priming. We performed linear mixed-effects model analyses to analyze the relation between adaptation effects in a complex statistical manner and reveal how the L2 language models represent syntactic features for English sentences. When the L2 language models were compared with the baseline L1 Gulordava language models, the analogous results were found for each probing task. In addition, it was confirmed that the L2 language models contain syntactic features of relative and coordinate clauses hierarchically in the sentence embedding representations.

This paper is a study on the recognition of continuous speech and uses a method of speech recognition using syntactic analysis and one-stage DMS/DP. In order to perform the speech recognition, first of all, we make DMS model by section division algorithm and let continuous speech data be recognized through One-stage DMS/DP method using syntactic analysis. Besides the speech recognition experiments of proposed method, we experiment the conventional one-stage DP method under the equivalent environment of data and conditions. From the recognition experiments, it is shown that Ole-stage DMS/DP using syntactic analysis is superior to conventional method.
This study investigates morphologically complex nouns in Korean through a series of priming studies. Two experiments examined whether morphological affixes on Korean nouns were decomposed or processed as a whole. Two types of morphological affixes were examined: morpho-syntactic case markers and the plural marker '-tul'. Results showed that priming occurred for the plural marker with SOAs of 80 ms and 160 ms, but no priming occurred for the morpho-syntactic case markers. These results suggest that the morphological processing for these two types of affixes differ. We argue that Korean nouns with the plural suffix are decomposed into the stem and affix, supporting the Decomposition Model (Pinker & Ullman, 2002). We suggest that while plural markers are truly morphological affixes, case markers in Korean are morpho-syntactic, and thus presuppose the existence of other syntactic elements, such as the matrix verb, hence the lack of priming effects.
In this paper, we propose a probabilistic Korean parsing model using a syntactic feature, a functional feature, a content feature, and a site feature of a syntactic object for effective syntactic disambiguation. It restricts grammar rules to binary-oriented form to deal with Korean properties such as variable word order and constituent ellipsis. In experiments, we analyze the parsing performance of each feature combination. Experimental results show that the combination of different features is preferred to the combination of similar features. Besides, it is remarkable that the function feature is more useful than the combination of the content feature and the size feature.
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of two syntactic cues in pronoun referential resolution: number cue (plural or singular) and gender cue (unambiguous or ambiguous). Using self-paced sentence reading task for pronoun sentences and lexical decision task for antecedents, Experiment 1 showed that the reading time of a plural pronoun ('they') was faster than a singular pronoun ('he' or 'she'), but the lexical decision time did not differ with a number cue and a Bender cue. In Experiment 2, using RSVP for pronoun sentences and lexical decision task for antecedents, the results showed that the lexical decision time differed for a gender cue only. These results suggested that the syntactic cues of a pronoun influenced strongly on referential resolution in discourse comprehension.
In information society, the need to detect document duplication and plagiarism is increasing. Many studies have progressed to meet such need, but there are limitations in increasing document duplication detection quality due to technological problem of natural language processing. Recently, some studies tried to increase the quality by applying syntatic-semantic analysis technique. But, the studies have the problem comparing syntactic-semantic trees. This paper develops a syntactic-semantic tree comparator, designs and implements a discriminator of similar documents using the comparator. To evaluate the system, we analyze the correlation between human discrimination and system discrimination with the comparator. This analysis shows that the proposed discrimination has good performance. We need to define the document type and improve the processing technique appropriate for each type.
This paper investigates the manner in which various. syntactic structures with a single meaning implement a consistent intonational pattern by examining English conditional clauses. In the phonetic experiment, we explore the edge tones in three different syntactic clauses which are semantically interpreted as a single conditional meaning (an if-clause, a clause with no if. and a clause with no if but followed by and) and compare them with the edge tone realized in a clause which is not interpreted as a conditional meaning. We also investigate the tonal differences resulting from the semantic difference between conditional and non-conditional meanings. That is, the conditional clauses expressed in three different syntactic structures show a consistent intonational pattern in their clausefinal boundaries; a rising contour (H- or H%) is realized at the edge of the intermediate phrases (ip) or intonational phrases (IP) in 89% of the if-clauses, 72% of the clauses with no if, and 79% of the clauses with no if but followed by and. On the other hand, 82% of the non-conditional clauses have a falling contour (L- or L-L%) in their final edge. Statistically, Chi-Square tests show that these percentages are all significantly higher, which suggests that a conditional meaning implements a consistent intonational pattern though it is expressed through different syntactic structures. Therefore, the result supports Bolinger's (1989) claim that intonation makes an important contribution to discourse interpretation.

This paper presents a simple method of supervised word sense disambiguation using decision lists based on syntactic clues. This approach focuses on the syntactic relations between the given ambiguous word and surrounding words in context for resolving a given sense ambiguity. By identifying and utilizing only the single best disambiguation evidence in a given context instead of combining a set of clues, the algorithm decides the correct sense. Experiments with 10 Korean verbs show that adding syntactic clues to a basic set of surrounding context words improves 33% higher performance than baseline accuracy. In addition, our method using decision lists is 3% higher than a method using integration of all disambiguation evidences.

The syntactic pattern recognition system of Korean characters is composed of three main functional parts; Preprocessing, Graph-representation, and Segmentation. In preprocessing routine, the input pattern has been thinned using the Hilditch's thinning algorithm. The graph-representation is the detection of a number of nodes over the input pattern and codification of branches between nodes by 8 directional components. Next, segmentation routine which has been implemented by top down nondeterministic parsing under the control of tree grammar identifies parts of the graph-represented Pattern as basic components of Korean characters. The authors have made sure that this system is effective for recognizing Korean characters through the recognition simulations by digital computer.
