This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence, severity or impact of symptoms in hemodialysis patients and its relationship with self efficacy and family support to identify factors influencing their symptoms. A cross-sectional design was used and the subjects were 243 patients undergoing hemodialysis at local units. The patients were Dialysis Symptom Index (DSI), a questionnaire about the presence and severity of symptoms. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Pearson coefficient correlation and multiple regression. There were significant differences in the total score of symptoms according to age and duration of hemodialysis. Symptoms score had significant negative correlations with family support (r=-.35, p<.001) and self-efficacy (r=-.16, p=.006). Family support explained 16.0% of the variance in symptoms score. Hemodialysis patients experience many distressing symptoms, which have negative effects on quality of their life. Promoting family support can help to reduce and control distressing symptoms in hemodialysis patients.
To evaluate the effect of manganese on the respiratory system, we investigated the respiratory symptoms of 63 male workers exposed to, fume containing manganese (Mn), iron (Fe) and silica (Si), and compared them with those of 66 male workers not exposed to the fume in a manganese alloy smelting factory. The prevalence ratios of the seven respiratory symptoms were not different between two groups. The presence of any respiratory symptom was not related with the age, duration of employment, smoking status of workers, and exposure to fume. In furnace workers, it was not related with the airborne Mn, Fe, and Si concentration in the total or respirable fume. Airborne Mn concentrations of all 4 furnaces in the respirable fume were below $1mg/m^3$. There were two suspicious cases of pneumoconiosis among furnace workers and one definite case(1/2) among casting workers who were not exposed to fume. The above results suggest that the exposure to the low airborne Mn concentration is not related with respiratory symptoms and pneumoconiosis. However, it is necessary to study the respiratory effects of Mn using the symptom questionnaire with consideration of the severity and persistence, of symptoms and the time interval from exposure.

Objectives: This study was undertaken in order to examine how musculoskeletal disorder(MSD) symptoms were affected by particular factors and then to explore control strategies to prevent MSDs in general hospital nurses. Materials: This, as part of a large study, was conducted using a set of information on literature review, questionnaire survey and focus group interview. It obtained prevalence and factors of MSD symptoms and examined how MSD symptoms were distributed and affected by the factors in nurses working at 15 general hospitals across Korea. The factors were personal factors, work organization, nursing tasks, physical factors and psychosocial factors. Results: A total of 501 nurses were determined as subjects. The highest MSD symptom prevalence was 61% for the shoulder, among body parts, followed by leg/feet(55%), low back(51%), neck(42%), wrist(38%), and elbow(21%). Prevalence for the whole body was 80%. Odds ratios ranged from 0.4 to 22.4 in logistic regression analyses. The symptoms were significantly attributed to factor variables such as body mass index, current health status, daily work time, nursing task, pooled-physical factors, ergonomic factors, work load, interpersonal conflict, and job insecurity. Conclusions: Two or more factor variables were significant, depending on body part, for MSD systems in the general hospital nurses. It was noticeable that physical factors, such as pooled-physical factors, ergonomic factors or work load, were selectively significant for MSD symptoms in all body parts, indicating that such information should be used for prevention of MSDs in the hospital sector.
This study was conducted to determine the affecting factors among patients with drinking behavior of liver cirrhosis. Data were collected by questionnaire from 157 patients who were diagnosed with liver cirrhosis at a tertiary hospital located in D-city. Measurements included patients' demographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, disease-related of symptom experience, emotional-factors of anxiety-depression and social-factor of social support. Data were analyzed using t-test, and logistic regression analyses. The incidence rate of drinking behavior was 31.8%. Multivariate analysis revealed that smoking(yes), men, symptom experience, social support and anxiety were more likely to report high level of drinking behavior. Future research should consider managing drinking behavior as an essential component of comprehensive care for patients with liver cirrhosis.
Objectives : To test the therapeutic efficacy of acupuncture applied to PC6 and ST36 for the relief of fullness of epigastrium or epigastric pain. Subjects and Methods : We enrolled fifty patients in a case series study The patients were mainly female (94 %) with an average age of 55 years $({\pm}15.0)$; the average age of the male patients was 51 years $({\pm}20.0)$. Twenty four percent of patients were in acute phase which epigastric pain had lasted below 1 month. Twenty eight percent of patients were in chronic phase which the pain had lasted over 6 month. The rest were in subacute phase. Acupuncture needles were inserted into PC6 and ST36 bilaterally. The acupuncture treatments were performed 2 times a week for 4 weeks. One treat session was lasted for 30 min. At each visit, overall symptomatic improvement, frequency and intensity of symptoms were checked on a 4 scaled questionnaire. Results : After acupuncture treatment, a progressive improvement of pain intensity was reported in 46 of the 50 patients, including 23 of excellent and 23 of good. The progress of symptom was more superior in subacute phase to acute or chronic phase. The symptom of 22 of 24 patients in subacute phase was improved. No patient experienced minor side-effects during acupuncture treatment. Conclusion : These preliminary data suggest the acupuncture treatment provides good pain relief for most patients presenting with epigastric pain. Randomized trials with appropriate control groups are needed to validate the effectiveness of this therapy in the treatment of epigastric pain.
The psychosocial stress and musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs) have been one of major health problems for hospital workers. This study tried to understand the relationship between symptoms associated with MSDs and risk factors such as working posture, job stress, psychosocial stress and fatigue. A total number of 655 hospital workers participated in this study. Specifically, REBA was applied for evaluating working posture and a checklist prepared by KOSHA(Korean Occupational Safety and Health Agency) was used for symptom survey. A questionnaire from KOSHA was also used for collecting data associated with job stress, psychosocial stress and fatigue. All these data were formulated and modeled by path analysis which was one of major statistical tools in this study. Specifically, path analysis for the data we collected came up with several major findings. The risk scores from working posture based on REBA had indirect effects via fatigue factor(MFS) as well as direct effects on symptoms. The factors associated with job stress (KOSS) and psychosocial stress(PWI-SF) had significant effects on symptoms. Specifically, indirect effect of job stress factors via fatigue factors(MFS) had bigger than that of direct effect of job stress on symptom.

To find the prevalence of the Farmer's syndrome and the related factors, we investigated 909 farmers who and older than 30 years and live in Choongju area. The farmers were interviewed individually with a questionnaire from July 18 through 31, 1997. The results are as follows; The prevalence of Farmer's syndrome was 21.0% in male and 45.1% in female. The age prevalence of Farmer's syndrome was higher in thirties and forties than fifties and over sixties in both sex. Farmer's syndrome was significantly higher in low educational status, low income, low family members and more than 20 years of farming group. However, Farmer's syndrome was significantly higher in non smoking and non alcohol intake group, there were no significant differences according to smoking and alcohol intake after stratification by sex. The most frequent symptom in male was lumbago(60.5%), the second was numb limb(49.8%), the third was shoulder stiffness(43.2%) and the fourth was dizziness(31.5%). In female, the most frequent symptom was lumbago(81.3%), the second was numb limb(70.2%), the third was dizziness(62.2%) and the fourth was shoulder stiffness(55.9%). All of these four symptoms are significantly higher in female than in male. With multiple logistic regression for Farmer's syndrome, sex(OR of female=3.3) number of family(OR of <=1.9) and duration of farming(OR of $\geq$2.0 yr=1.5) were turned out to be significant variables.

Objectives : The causative pathology of acute muscular pain cannot be defined in many patients. To evaluate the relations between mental state and acute muscular pain patients, the author surveyed symptom check list-90-Revision(SCL-90-R) in patients with acute muscular pain. Materials and Methods : From November 2004 to June 2005, a questionnaire including SCL-90-R was given to patients(52 persons) who visited our department for acute(<7days)muscular pain of neck(22 persons) or low back(30 persons). Fifty two patients(30 male, 22 female) completed SCL-90-R Results : 1. Mean values of T-scores on all 9 basic scales in the patients groups were within normal range. but T-scores SOM in the patients groups were significantly very higher than those in Normal groups(p<0.01). 2. The T-scores of SOM In low back pain patients were significantly higher than those in Normal groups(p<0.05). 3. There was no significant difference in all scales between acute muscular pain and L-spine HIVD patients groups. 4. There was no significant difference in all scales between acute muscular pain and general back pain patients groups. 5. There was no significant difference in all scales between male and female in the patients groups. Conclusion : It is concerned between T-scores on all 9 bas κ scales of SCL-90-R and acute muscular pain. Especially acute muscular pain of back has a relation to somatization of T-scores on all 9 basic scales of SCL-90-R.
The purpose of this study was to examine association between oral health status and perceived general health symptom. We analyzed 14,231 subjects who participated in Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007~2009). All individuals were examined by a questionnaire about socioeconomic history, smoking and drinking habit, the frequency of daily tooth brushing, the presence of regular dental visit, and EuroQol-5D. Dental survey was conducted to find the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index and community periodontal index. Subjects with perceived problem with mobility had higher DMFT index (odds ratio, 1.18, p<0.001). Subjects with with perceived problem with pain/discomfort had higher DMFT index (odds ratio, 1.16, p<0.001). Self-rating general health symptom was not associated with periodontitis (p>0.05). Perceived general health was associated with DMFT index. It is recommendable that we can use the perceived general health to predict oral health status.
This study was designed to identify how the incidence and severity of premenstrual. syndrome (PMS) correlate with the nutrient intakes and exercise habit of women. The subjects of this study were 299 women residing in Busan metropolitan city. Each subject was asked to complete a menstrual discomfort questionnaire (MDQ) for PMS and nutrient intakes. PMS symptom scores of women in their twenties ranked in order of severity were: behavioral change (2.45), followed by pain (2.36) and water retention (2.28), negative effects (2.20), autonomic reaction (1.91), arousal (1.87), decreased concentration (1.76) and decreased control (1.74). For Women in their thirties, the symptom of pain was the most dominant (2.93) followed by autonomic reaction (2.69) and behavioral change (2.54), and for those in their forties, negative effect (3.06) was highest, followed by pain (2.97) and autonomic reaction (2.86). The overall symptoms of PMS significantly increased with age (20': 2.07 points, 30': 2.34 points, 40': 2.47 points). There was no correlation of the BMI of the subjects with the symptoms of PMS, but there was a significant negative correlation between the symptoms of PMS and exercise frequency for women in their thirties and forties. Subjects in their twenties exhibited a significant negative correlation for PMS symptoms with the intake of carbohydrate (p < 0.05), calcium (p < 0.05) and vitamin E (p < 0.05). For subjects in their thirties, PMS symptoms were negatively correlated with the intake of calcium (p < 0.05) and vitamin C (p < 0.05); and in women in their forties, calcium (p < 0.01) and carbohydrate (p < 0.05) intakes were negatively correlated with PMS symptoms. This suggests that PMS represents the clinical manifestation of a nutrient deficiency state, especially calcium. Therefore, we concluded that nutrient supplementation and exercise management are likely to be of benefit in relieving PMS symptoms.
