  • The Gasoline Direct Injection(GDI) system has been highlighted due to the improvement of fuel consumption and the control of exhaust emission from gasoline engines. Main purpose of the present study is to measure spray characteristics of GDSI for real engine application. We have investigated experimentally spray tip penetration, spray angle, tip velocity and spatial spray distribution. Counter-rotating vortex grown on the spray surface plays an important role in the spray characteristics. Accordingly the spray tip penetration and tip velocity do not excess 50mm, 20m/s respectively, under 0.6MPa ambient pressure. the spray cone angle of GDSI have a same tendency to a simplex swirl atomizer.

  • Flow and spray characteristics are critical factors that affect the performance and exhaust emissions of a direct injection diesel engine. It is well known that the swirl control system is one of the useful ways to improve the fuel consumption and emission reduction rate in a diesel engine. However, until now there have only been a few studies on the effect of flow on spray. Because of this, the relationship between the flow pattern in the cylinder and its influence on the behavior of the spray is in need of investigation. First, in-cylinder flow distributions for 4-valve cylinder head of DI (Direct Injection) Diesel engine were investigated under steady-state conditions for different SCV (Swirl Control Valve) opening angles using a steady flow rig and 2-D LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry). It was found that swirl flow was more dominant than that of tumble in the experimented engine. In addition, the in-cylinder flow was quantified in terms of swirl/tumble ratio and mean flow coefficient. As the SCV opening angle was increased, high swirl ratios more than 3.0 were obtained in the case of SCV -70° and 90°. Second, spray characteristics of the intermittent injection were investigated by a PDA (Phase Doppler Anemometer) system. A Time Dividing Method (TDM) was used to analyze the microscopic spray characteristics. It was found that the atomization characteristics such as velocity and SMD (Sauter Mean Diameter) of the spray were affected by the in-cylinder swirl ratio. As a result, it was concluded that the swirl ratio improves atomization characteristics uniformly.

  • The pressure-swirl atomizer is widely used for the injectors in liquid rocket engines thanks to its high performance atomization and broad stability margin range. Spray mixed-interaction is an important area of study especially in cases where the propellant is mixed by spray interaction after an oxidant and a fuel are discharged separately. This interaction of sprays results in a significant modification of the spray characteristics such as the spatial evolution of the sprays. Experiments are conducted by a photographic technique to quantify the merged angle of the interaction regions of sprays from two pressure-swirl injectors. The experimental results show that the merged angle is mainly determined by the momentum flux ratios between two swirled sprays.

  • The flow characteristics of a swirl injector were investigated with the variation of the flow condition and geometric dimensions, such as orifice length for considering the viscous effect and tangential entry port area for considering the swirl intensity. The liquid film thickness strongly influencing on the formed drop size of the spray was measured using a new technique. The film thickness measurement technique proposed here, used the attenuation of fluorescence signal near the injector exit. The breakup length that is important for the flame location as well as the spray cone angle which influences on the ignition performance was measured using a backlit stroboscopic photography technique. From the experimental results, it is found that an increase in injection pressure decreased the film thickness and breakup length, and also enlarged the spray cone angle. A decrease in orifice length and tangential entry port area has a similar tendency of thinner film thickness, shorter breakup length and larger spray cone angle. In the present study, we proposed empirical models of the flow characteristics of the swirl injectors.

  • This experimental study was to investigate spray angles and drop sizes in an external mixed twin-fluid swirl jet nozzle. Twin-fluid swirl jet nozzle with swirlers designed four swirl angles such as $0^{\circ},\;22.5^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;64.2^{\circ}$ was employed. A PDA system was utilized for the measurement of drop size and mean velocity. Water and air were used as the working fluids in this experiment. The mass flow rate of water was fixed as 0.03 kg/min, and air flow rates were controlled to have the air/liquid mass ratio from 1.0 to 6.0. As a result, swirl angle controlled to spray angles and drop sizes. It was found that swirl angle was increased with spray angle and with decreased SMD. However, the effect of swirl angle was reduced at large air/liquid mass ratio(Mr=6.0).

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of swirler vane angle and the aspect ratio of swirl chamber of nozzle on the characteristics of single spray. The characteristics of sprat's have been investigated by measuring the spray angle, droplet size and velocity Visualization of spray was conducted to obtain the spray angle and breakup process. The spray characteristics such as droplet size and velocity were measured by Phase Doppler Anemometry(PDA). It was found that the spray angle was increased with increasing the swirler angle. For both sprays, the axial velocity and SMD were decreased with increasing the swirler vane angle. It was also shown that the axial velocity and SMD were decreased with increasing the aspect ratio of swirl chamber The effect of vane angle un the spray characteristics was greater than the aspect ratio of swirl chamber for single spray.

  • In this study, spray characteristics of a dual airblast atomizer are addressed. Three dimensional characteristics of a dual airblast atomizer with air swirl are measured to provide the significant data. The liquid flow rate was fixed at 0.06 kg/min, and atomizing air was controlled at the liquid-air mass ratio of 4.0. The performance of the spray with co-swirl and counter-swirl flow was investigated at each point in the developed spray region using a three-component phase Doppler particle analyzer. This instrument was also used to evaluate the concentration profiles. The three dimensional mean velocity were investigated of present flow characteristics of the dual airblast atomizer. In addition, drop size distributions, mean droplet size profile, and droplet concentration were analyzed to understand atomization characteristics. This experimental results can be conveniently utilized for the preliminary design of gas turbine engines for aircraft.

  • Numerical analysis of the spray angles of Dual swirl injector were investigated to obtain basic design data and to predict the combustion performance. Using the commercial thermal hydraulic program, discharge coefficients and spray angles were numerically analyzed with recess length, pressure drop, velocity ratio, mixture ratio and back hole length. Water was used as simulants for oxidizer and fuel, respectively to compare the experimental results. Swirl injectors were designed to inject oxidizer of 70.5g/s and fuel of 29.5g/s at the pressure drop of 1MPa and two recess lengths were considered. In addition, the effect of injector geometry coefficient and velocity ratio on the discharge coefficient was studied.

  • Predictions of the fuel spray dispersion and mixing processes are very important to improve the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in GDI engines. Numerical and experimental analysis of the sprays with a swirl injector have been conducted. A numerical analysis is carried out using KIVA-II code with modified spray models. Experimental measurements are performed to show the global spray images and the local images near nozzle tip using laser sheet visualization technique. Computed and measured spray characteristics such as spray width, tip penetration are compared, and good agreements can be achieved. The spray head vortex is stronger as the injection pressure increases, but numerical calculations cannot show the head vortex properly.

  • High-pressure swirl injectors have usually been employed in Gasoline direct injection engines due to their spray characteristics and the feasibility of their control. Thus the microscopic characteristics of high-pressure swirl spray were investigated by PDA. The correlation between axial and radial velocities and the correlation between droplet size and axial velocity were examined with different axial and radial positions. Two dimensional droplet velocity and its number distribution with size-classified droplets were illustrated. The mean droplet velocity and its SMD were also analyzed at the center of spray, the position having maximum mean axial velocity, and the spray periphery using time dividing method. Finally, the structure of high-pressure swirl spray was presented with the size distribution and velocity profile of droplets.
