The ultimate objective of this study is to develop oxygen-enriched combustion techniques applicable to the system of practical industrial boiler. To this end the combustion characteristics of lab-scale LNG combustor were investigated as a first step using the method of numerical simulation by analyzing the flame characteristics and pollutant emission behaviour as a function of oxygen enrichment level. Several useful conclusions could be drawn based on this study. First of all, the increase of oxygen enrichment level instead of air caused long and thin flame called laminar flame feature. This was in good agreement with experimental results appeared in open literature and explained by the effect of the decrease of turbulent mixing due to the decrease of absolute amount of oxidizer flow rate by the absence of the nitrogen species. Further, as expected, oxygen enrichment increased the flame temperatures to a significant level together with concentrations of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ species because of the elimination of the heat sink and dilution effects by the presence of $N_2$ inert gas. However, the increased flame temperature with $O_2$ enriched air showed the high possibility of the generation of thermal $NO_x$ if nitrogen species were present. In order to remedy the problem caused by the oxygen-enriched combustion, the appropriate amount of recirculation $CO_2$ gas was desirable to enhance the turbulent mixing and thereby flame stability and further optimum determination of operational conditions were necessary. For example, the adjustment of burner with swirl angle of $30\sim45^{\circ}$ increased the combustion efficiency of LNG fuel and simultaneously dropped the $NO_x$ formation.

Hybrid rockets have lately attracted attention as a strong candidate of small, low cost, safe and reliable launch vehicles. A significant topic is that the first commercially sponsored space ship, SpaceShipOne vehicle chose a hybrid rocket. The main factors for the choice were safety of operation, system cost, quick turnaround, and thrust termination. In Japan, five universities including Hokkaido University and three private companies organized "Hybrid Rocket Research Group" from 1998 to 2002. Their main purpose was to downsize the cost and scale of rocket experiments. In 2002, UNISEC (University Space Engineering Consortium) and HASTIC (Hokkaido Aerospace Science and Technology Incubation Center) took over the educational and R&D rocket activities respectively and the research group dissolved. In 2008, JAXA/ISAS and eleven universities formed "Hybrid Rocket Research Working Group" as a subcommittee of the Steering Committee for Space Engineering in ISAS. Their goal is to demonstrate technical feasibility of lowcost and high frequency launches of nano/micro satellites into sun-synchronous orbits. Hybrid rockets use a combination of solid and liquid propellants. Usually the fuel is in a solid phase. A serious problem of hybrid rockets is the low regression rate of the solid fuel. In single port hybrids the low regression rate below 1 mm/s causes large L/D exceeding a hundred and small fuel loading ratio falling below 0.3. Multi-port hybrids are a typical solution to solve this problem. However, this solution is not the mainstream in Japan. Another approach is to use high regression rate fuels. For example, a fuel regression rate of 4 mm/s decreases L/D to around 10 and increases the loading ratio to around 0.75. Liquefying fuels such as paraffins are strong candidates for high regression fuels and subject of active research in Japan too. Nakagawa et al. in Tokai University employed EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) to modify viscosity of paraffin based fuels and investigated the effect of viscosity on regression rates. Wada et al. in Akita University employed LTP (Low melting ThermoPlastic) as another candidate of liquefying fuels and demonstrated high regression rates comparable to paraffin fuels. Hori et al. in JAXA/ISAS employed glycidylazide-poly(ethylene glycol) (GAP-PEG) copolymers as high regression rate fuels and modified the combustion characteristics by changing the PEG mixing ratio. Regression rate improvement by changing internal ballistics is another stream of research. The author proposed a new fuel configuration named "CAMUI" in 1998. CAMUI comes from an abbreviation of "cascaded multistage impinging-jet" meaning the distinctive flow field. A CAMUI type fuel grain consists of several cylindrical fuel blocks with two ports in axial direction. The port alignment shifts 90 degrees with each other to make jets out of ports impinge on the upstream end face of the downstream fuel block, resulting in intense heat transfer to the fuel. Yuasa et al. in Tokyo Metropolitan University employed swirling injection method and improved regression rates more than three times higher. However, regression rate distribution along the axis is not uniform due to the decay of the swirl strength. Aso et al. in Kyushu University employed multi-swirl injection to solve this problem. Combinations of swirling injection and paraffin based fuel have been tried and some results show very high regression rates exceeding ten times of conventional one. High fuel regression rates by new fuel, new internal ballistics, or combination of them require faster fuel-oxidizer mixing to maintain combustion efficiency. Nakagawa et al. succeeded to improve combustion efficiency of a paraffin-based fuel from 77% to 96% by a baffle plate. Another effective approach some researchers are trying is to use an aft-chamber to increase residence time. Better understanding of the new flow fields is necessary to reveal basic mechanisms of regression enhancement. Yuasa et al. visualized the combustion field in a swirling injection type motor. Nakagawa et al. observed boundary layer combustion of wax-based fuels. To understand detailed flow structures in swirling flow type hybrids, Sawada et al. (Tohoku Univ.), Teramoto et al. (Univ. of Tokyo), Shimada et al. (ISAS), and Tsuboi et al. (Kyushu Inst. Tech.) are trying to simulate the flow field numerically. Main challenges are turbulent reaction, stiffness due to low Mach number flow, fuel regression model, and other non-steady phenomena. Oshima et al. in Hokkaido University simulated CAMUI type flow fields and discussed correspondence relation between regression distribution of a burning surface and the vortex structure over the surface.

An injector that uses methane gas ($CH_4$) and liquid oxygen ($LO_x$) as propellants was designed to verify the combustion characteristics of an engine that uses methane, which is one of the next-generation propellants. A swirl/shear coaxial-type injector was used, and flow analysis was performed using Fluent to determine the main design parameters of the injector. A hydraulic test was performed to understand the atomization and spray pattern characteristics of the injector. Next, a combustion test was performed at the design point to understand the ignition and combustion stability. Additional combustion tests were performed according to the O/F ratio to investigate the combustion characteristics and stabilities using the characteristic exhaust velocity ($C^*$) and fluctuation of the chamber pressure. The experimental results showed that the combustion efficiency was greater than 90%, and the pressure fluctuation was lower than 2% under all conditions.
Thermal NOx is generated in a high temperature environment in a combustion facilities. Exhaust gas recirculation method is widely used among various methods for reducing nitrogen oxides in combustion devices. In the present study, the computational fluid dynamic analysis was accomplished to elucidate the cold flow characteristics in the flue gas recirculation burner with both outlets opening. Because the reciculation pipes is installed toward the tangential direction, the swirling flow is formulated in the burner and the phenomenon of the reverse flow creation is detected at the center area of circular burner. We are confirmed that this is the similar trend with the burner with one side outlet closed. From the present study, it was seen that the recirculated inflow from both recirculated burner outlets increased by about 5% compared to the burner with one side outlet opening. At the outlet located at the exhaust gas recirculation pipe inlet(gas exit 1), the inlet flow was formed in the entire region. At the opposite outlet(gas exit 2), the total flow was discharged, but the center part of the burner was observed to have a reverse flow. The flow rate at the gas exit 2 was 3 ~ 5 times larger than the flow rate at the gas exit 1.
Wall interactions of direct injection spray were investigated using laser-sheet imaging, shadowgraphy, wetted footprint and phase Doppler interferometry techniques. A narrow-cone high-pressure swirl injector is used to inject iso-octane fuel onto a plate, which has three different impact angles inside a pressurized chamber. Heated air and plate conditions were compared with unheated cases. Injection interval was also varied in the heated case to compare dry- and wet- wall impingement behaviors. High-speed macroscopic Mie-scattering images showed that presence of wall and air temperature has only minor effect on the bulk spray structure and penetration speed for the narrow-cone injector tested. The overall bulk motions of the spray plume and its spatial position at a given time are basically unaffected until a few millimeters before impacting the wall. The surface properties of the impact surface, such as the temperature, the presence of a preexisting liquid film also have a small effect on the amount of wetting or the wetted footprint; however, they have strong influence on what occurs just after impact or after a film is formed. The shadowgraph in particular shows that the plate temperature has a significant effect on vapor phase propagation. Generally, 10-20% faster horizontal vapor phase propagation is observed along the wall at elevated temperature condition. For impingement onto a preexisting film, more splash and evaporation were also observed. Contrary to some preconceptions, there is no significant splashing and droplet rebounding from surfaces that are interposed in the path of the DI gasoline spray, especially for the oblique impact angle cases. There also appears to be a dense spray front consists of large sac spray droplets in the oblique impact angle cases. The bulk of the spray is not impacted on the surface, but rather is deflected by it The microscopic details as depicted by phase Doppler measurements show that the outcome of the droplet impaction events can be significantly influenced. Only droplets at the spray front have high enough Weber numbers for wall impact to wet, splash or rebound. Using the sign of vertical velocity, the time-resolved downward droplets and upward droplets are compared. The Weber number of upward moving droplets, which seldom exceeds unity, also decreases as the impact angle decreases, as the droplets tend to impact less and move along the wall in the deflected spray plume.
The present study has been carried out to analyze the flow characteristics of a heat recovery steam generator with the change of inlet flow conditions by using numerical flow analysis. The inlet of HRSG corresponds the outlet of gas turbine exit and the flow after gas turbine has strong swirl flow and turbulence. The inlet flow condition of HRSG should be included the exit flow characteristics of gas turbine. The present numerical analysis adopted the flow analysis result of gas turbine exit flow as a inlet flow condition of HRSG analysis. The computational flow analysis result of gas turbine exit shows that the maximum axial velocity appears near circular duct wall and the maximum turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation rate exist relatively higher gradient region of axial velocity. The comparison of flow analysis will be executed with change of inlet turbulent flow condition. The first case is using the inlet turbulent properties from the result of computational analysis of gas turbine exit flow, and the second case is using the assumed turbulent intensity with the magnitude proportional to the velocity magnitude and length scale. The computational results of flow characteristics for two cases show great difference especially in the velocity field and turbulent properties. The main conclusion of the present study is that the flow inlet condition of HRSG should be included the turbulent properties for the accurate computational result of flow analysis.

This study is to investigate the industrial boiler which can be significantly affected by the restriction of NOx. Note that the application of SNCR method to industrial boiler is usually blown as not feasible due to the insufficient residence time for proper mixing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of the SNCR system application to the industrial boiler, which produces 40 tons of steam per hour using heavy oil. For the industrial boiler with 3-D rectangular coordinate, the general coding are made fur various turbulence modeling such as turbulent flow, turbulent fuel combustion, thermal NO formation and destruction together with the NO reaction with reducing agents. Further, the incorporation of drop trajectory model is successfully made in 3-D rectangular coordinate with Lagrangian frame and the main swirl burner effect on the characteristics of flame is considered. As expected a short flame was created and thereby NOx is removed more efficiently by increasing the proper region of temperature for NO reduction reaction. The validation of program was made successfully by the comparison of experimental data. Based on the reliable calculation results, the SNCR method in a industrial boiler shows the possibility as one of viable NO reduction method by the use of well designed mixing air of reducing agent.

With the depletion of high grade coal, it is indispensable to be used co-combustion of low rank coal with bituminous coal in pulverized coal-fired power plants. This study describes the detailed measurements of combustion characteristics of bituminous and subbituminous coal in a 0.7MWth pilot-scale test facility. This experimental works include the measurement of gas temperature, gas concentrations along with the reactor axial and radial distance at the condition of excess air ratio of 1.2. The solid sampling was carried out and analyzed with the combustion of bituminous coal. The main reaction zone of coal flame in a reactor was formed about 1 m from the swirl burner, and at downstream, the fully developed temperature and species distribution was observed. The sampled particles of bituminous coal in a reactor revealed the complete carbon burn-out was achieved just after an main combustion zone.

Nitrogen oxide is generated by the chemical reaction of oxygen and nitrogen in higher temperature environment of combustion facilities. The NOx reduction equipment is generally used in the power plant or incineration plant and it causes enormous cost for the construction and maintenance. The flue gas recirculation method is commonly adopted for the reduction of NOx formation in the combustion facilities. In the present study, the computational fluid dynamic analysis was accomplished to elucidated the cold flow characteristics in the flue gas recirculation burner with coanda nozzles in the flue gas recirculation pipe. The inlet and outlet of flue gas recirculation pipes are directed toward the tangential direction of circular burner not toward the center of burner. The swirling flow is formed in the burner and it causes the reverse flow in the burner. The ratio of flue gas recirculation flow rate with the air flow rate was about 2.5 for the case with the coanda nozzle gap, 0.5mm and it was 1.5 for the case with the gap, 1.0mm. With the same coanda nozzle gap, the flue gas recirculation flow rate ratio had a little increase when the air flow rate changes from 1.1 to 2.2 times of ideal air flow rate.

This study seeks to know the effect of fluoride topical application on the shear bond strength between enamel and fissure sealant. On group 1,2,3,4, Teethmate A(unfilled sealant) and on group 5,6,7,8 Ultraseal XT(filled sealant) were used. Group 1 and 5 were not pre-treated with fluoride and group 2 and 6 were pre-treated with 1.23% APF for 4minutes. Group 3 and 7 were pretreated with 2.0% NaF for 4 minutes. and group 4 and 8 were pumiced with abrasive containing fluoride for 10 seconds. Prepared specimens were acid etched for 30 seconds using 35% phosphoric acid, and then sealant was cured to the specimen using a 3mm diameter by 2mm height mold. They went through thermocycling. Its shear bond strength was measured, and then acid etched both groups that were pretreated with fluoride and that were not pretreated with fluoride. Then we examined the surface of the specimen with EM and came up with these results. In groups using unfilled sealant(group 1,2,3.4) there were no significant differences between oops pretreated with fluoride and groups not pretreated with fluoride. In groups using filled sealant(group 5,6,7,8), groups 6 and 7(treated with 1.23% APF 2.0% NaF respectively) showed significantly lower shear bond strength, compared to group 5 (not pretreated with fluoride) and group 8 (pumiced with abrasive containing fluoride) (p<0.05).
