Kinetic Characterization of Swelling of Liquid Crystalline Phases of Glyceryl Monooleate

  • Research in this paper focuses on the kinetic evaluation of swelling of the liquid crystalline phases of glyceryl monooleate (GMO). Swelling of the lamellar and cubic liquid crystalline phases of GMO was studied using two in vitro methods, a total immersion method and a Franz cell method. The swelling of the lamellar phase and GMO having 0 %w/w initial water content was temperature dependent. The swelling ratio was greater at $20^{\circ}^C than 37^{\circ}^C$ . The water uptake increased dramatically with decreasing initial water content of the liquid crystalline phases. The swelling rates obtained using the Franz cell method with a moist nylon membrane to mimic buccal drug delivery situation were slower than the total immersion method. The swelling was studied by employing first-order and second-order swelling kinetics. The swelling of the liquid crystalline phases of GMO could be described by second-order swelling kinetics. The initial stage of the swelling (t < 4 h) followed the square root of time relationship, indicating that this model is also suitable for describing the water uptake by the liquid crystalline matrices. These results obtained from the current study demonstrate that the swelling strongly depends on temperature, the initial water content of the liquid crystalline phases and the methodology employed for measuring the swelling of GMO.

Assessment of swelling pressure of stabilized Bentonite

  • In this study, a comprehensive laboratory experimental programme was conducted on expansive soil with a high swelling potential to study the influence of different additive materials on swelling pressure and index properties. Lime, sand, multifilament fiber and fibrillated fiber were used for stabilization of expansive soil. Lime, sand and fibers were respectively added to the expansive soil at 0-7%, 0-80%, 0-0.5%. On each mixture that was prepared by the proportions mentioned above, Atterberg limits, compaction, and swelling pressure tests were conducted. From the result of these experiments, the swelling pressure-time relation could be replaced by a rectangular hyperbola established to facilitate the prediction of ultimate percent swelling with a few initial data points. The best type of additive and its optimum ratio for engineering purposes could be estimated rapidly by this approach.

폴리에스터/면 혼방직물의 1욕 1단 서모졸 염색에 관한 연구 (A Study on the One Bath One Step Thermosol Dyeing of Polyester/Cotton Blended Fabrics)

  • In this study the effects of swelling and fixing agent for the cotton side of polyester/cotton blended fabrics and the thermosol temperature on the dyeing properties and fastness. were investigated, when the polyester/cotton blended fabrics were dyed with a disperse dye which was able to dye both side of fiber by one bath one step thermosol process. The obtained results are as follows; The dye adsorption decreased with the increase of cotton blend ratio in polyester/cotton blended fabrics, when the ratio of swelling and fixing agent for cotton side was constant. As the thermosol temperature increased up to $210^{\circ}C$, the dye adsorption were increased, but that effect was less significant when the cotton blend ratio was higher.

  • Novel biodegradable elastic hydrogels, based on hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer blocks, were synthesized via the radical crosslinking reaction of diacrylates of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(${\varepsilon}-caprolactone$) (PCL). PEG and PCL diols were diacrylated with acryloyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine, with the reaction confirmed by FT-IR and $^1H-NMR$ measurements. The diacrylate polymers were used as building-blocks for the syntheses of a series of hydro gels, with different block compositions, by simply varying the feed ratios and molecular weights of the block components. The swelling ratio of the hydrogels was controlled by the balance between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer blocks. Usually, the swelling ratio increases with increasing PEG content and decreasing block length within the network structure. The hydrogels exhibited negative thermo-sensitive swelling behavior due to the coexistence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer components in their network structure, and such thermo-responsive swelling/deswelling behavior could be repeated using a temperature cycle, without any significant change in the swelling ratio. In vitro degradation tests showed that degradation occurred over a 3 to 8 month period. Due to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, elasticity and functionality, these hydrogels could be utilized in various biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering and drug delivery systems.

A new method to predict swelling pressure of compacted bentonites based on diffuse double layer theory

  • Compacted bentonites were chosen as the backfill material and buffer in high level nuclear waste disposal due to its high swelling pressure, high ion adsorption capacity and low permeability. It is essential to estimate the swelling pressure in design and considering the safety of the nuclear repositories. The swelling pressure model of expansive clay colloids was developed based on Gouy-Chapman diffuse double layer theory. However, the diffuse double layer model is effective in predicting low compaction dry density (low swelling pressure) for certain bentonites, and invalidation in simulating high compaction dry density (high swelling pressure). In this paper, the new relationship between nondimensional midplane potential function, u, and nondimensional distance function, Kd, were established based on the Gouy-Chapman theory by considering the variation of void ratio. The new developed model was constructed based on the published literature data of compacted Na-bentonite (MX80) and Ca-bentonite (FoCa) for sodium and calcium bentonite respectively. The proposed models were applied to re-compute swelling pressure of other compacted Na-bentonites (Kunigel-V1, Voclay, Neokunibond and GMZ) and Ca-bentonites (FEBEX, Bavaria bentonite, Bentonite S-2, Montigel bentonite) based on the reported experimental data. Results show that the predicted swelling pressure has a good agreement with the experimental swelling pressure in all cases.

pH-민감성 삼성분계 공중합체 젤의 합성 및 팽윤 속도론 (Synthesis and Swelling Kinetics of a Cross-Linked pH-Sensitive Ternary Copolymer Gel System)

  • A pH sensitive ternary copolymer gel was synthesized in the presence of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a crosslinking agent through radical polymerization of vinyl acetate (VA), acrylic acid (AA) and methyl acrylate(MA) with a weight ratio of 1 : 1.3 : 1. A number of experiments were carried out to determine the swelling behavior of the gel under a variety of pH conditions of the swelling medium. As the pH of the swelling medium was changed from 1.0 to 8.0 at $37^{\circ}C$, the gel showed a shift in the pH-dependent swelling behavior from Fickian (n=0.3447) to non-Fickian (n=0.9125). The resulting swelling parameters were analyzed using graphical and statistical methods. The results showed that the swelling of the gel was controlled by the pH of the medium, i.e. $n=n_o{\exp}(S_{C}pH)$, where n is the diffusion exponent, $n_o(=28.9645{\times}10^{-2})$ is the pre-exponential factor and $S_C$(=0.1417) is pH sensitivity coefficient. The swelling behavior of the gel was also examined in aliphatic alcohols. The results showed that the rate of swelling increased with increasing number of carbon atoms in the alcoholic molecular chain.

Assessment of the swelling potential of Baghmisheh marls in Tabriz, Iran

  • Tabriz is a large Iranian city and the capital of the East Azerbaijan province. The bed rock of this city is mainly consisted of marl layers. Marl layers have some outcrops in the northern and eastern parts of city that mainly belong to the Baghmisheh formation. Based on their colors, these marls are classified into three types: yellow, green, and gray marls. The city is developing toward its eastern side wherein various civil projects are under construction including tunnels, underground excavation, and high-rise building. In this regard, the swelling behavior assessment of these marls is of critical importance. Also, in lightweight structures with foundation pressure less than swelling pressure, several problems such as walls cracking and jamming of door and windows may occur. In the present study, physical properties and swelling behavior of Baghmisheh marls are investigated. According to the X-ray diffractometer (XRD) results, the marls are mainly composed of Illite, Kaolinite, Montmorillonite, and Chloride minerals. Type and content of clay minerals and initial void ratio have a decisive role in swelling behavior of these marls. The swelling potential of these marls was investigated using one-dimensional odometer apparatus under stress level up to 10 kPa. The results showed that yellow marls have high swelling potential and expansibility compared to the other marls. In addition, green and gray marls showed intermediate and low swelling potential and swelling pressure, respectively.

  • 열 응답성을 갖는 poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) 수화젤의 팽윤 및 수축 특성을 변화시키기 위하여, 물을 용매로 하여 AN 함량이 10 mol% 이내인 P(NIPAAm-co-AN) 공중합체 및 이들의 수화젤을 합성하였고, AN 함량이 공중합체 수화젤의 임계젤전이온도(CGTT) 및 팽윤 거동에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 공중합체 수화젤들은 $30{\sim}32\;^{\circ}C$에서 CGTT를 나타내었으며, AN 함량이 증가함에 따라 CGTT는 저온 쪽으로 이동하였다. 이들 공중합체 수화젤을 CGTT 이하 온도의 물에서 팽윤시키면 AN 함량이 많아짐에 따라 팽윤속도가 느려지고 평형 팽윤비 값이 작아지지만, CGTT 이상에서 수축시키면 AN 함량이 많은 수화젤이 더 빠르고 더 많이 수축하였다.

Preparation of Buccal Patch Composed of Carbopol, Poloxamer and Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose

  • A polymeric film composed of Carbopol, Poloxamer and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose was prepared to develop a buccal patch and the effects of composition of the film on adhesion time, swelling ratio, and dissolution of the film were studied. The effects of plasticizers or penetration enhancers on the release of triamcinolone acetonide (TAA) were also studied. The hydrogen bonding between Carbopol and Poloxamer played important role in reducing swelling ratio and dissolution rate of polymer film and increasing adhesion time. The swelling ratio of the composite film was significantly reduced and the adhesion time was increased when compared with Carbopol film. As the ratio of Poloxamer to hydroxypropyl methylcellulose increased from 0/66 to 33/33, the release rate of TAA decreased. However, no further significant decrease of release rate was observed beyond the ratio of 33/33. The release rate of TAA in the polymeric film containing polyethylene glycol 400, a plasticizer, showed the highest release rate followed by triethyl citrate, and castor oil. The release rate of TAA from the polymeric film containing permeation enhancers was slower than that from the control without enhancers. Therefore, these observations indicated that a preparation of a buccal patch is feasible with the polymeric film composed of Cabopol, Poloxamer and hydropropyl methylcellulose.

생사의 침지처리에서 팽화약제처리 효과 (Effect of Some Swelling Agents on Soaking Treatment of Raw Silk)

  • 생사의 제조준비 공정으로 침지처리시 생사의 팽화도를 향상시키고 처리시간을 단축하고저 몇가지 약제를 병용처리한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 생사를 침지처리만 하여도 생사의 팽화도는 무처리에 비하여 34% 향상되었다. 2. Oil 첨가 시험결과 계면활성제 수용액에 Emanol 0.5g/l을 첨가함으로서 생사의 팽화도를 향상시킬 수 있었다. 3. 유기용매와 파라핀, 글리세린의 첨가는 생사의 팽화도에 미치는 영향은 적었다. 4. 염류중에서는 규산소다를 첨가할때 생사가 부드러워 지므로 팽화제로 적당하였다. 또 전처리시에 염류를 첨가하여 진공침투 처리함으로서 보다 생사의 팽화도를 향상시킬 수 있었다. 5. 지금까지의 생사 침지처리 방법을 종합적으로 검토하면 침지 전처리로서 sodium carbonate 0.4N 용액에서 진공침투처리(70 cmHg, 2회)후 Emulon 1g/l, Emanol 0.5g/l, sodium silicate 0.04 N, 속비 1 : 40, 온도 35$^{\circ}C$에서 2시간 침지처리한 후 수세, 탈수, 건조하는 방법이 가장 우수하였는데 무처리에 비하여 생사의 팽화도를 57% 향상시킬 수 있었다.
