Low Carbon operation study through comparing GHG contribution of each stages of railway vehicle (철도차량 전과정 단계별 온실가스 발생량 비교를 통한 저탄소 운영방안 연구)

  • Advanced Railway countries are developing technologies of production and management for low-carbon and green growth of their railway industry to hold a dominant position under post-Tokyo protocol regime through integrated approach which uses environmental quantitative analysis of train life cycle by using LCA(Life Cycle Assessment). On the contrary, Korea railroad industry attempts to make an environmental improvement only for using regenerative energy and improvement in operating energy consumption through adapting reduction weight of material technology and etc. without systematic environmental analysis approaches such as comparing and analyzing energy consumption as well as GHG emission in each life cycle stages of train. Therefore, In this paper, low-carbon management and comprehensive environmental improvement for sustainable development of Korea railway industry through analyzing the result of life cycle analysis in abroad are suggested.

On the development of Intelligent Railway Logistics Terminal (지능형 고효율 철도물류터미널 구축 방안)

  • The government have plans to improve the railway transport capacity and transport hub for the sustainable national transport and logistics system. Specially, there are much efforts to improve transportation capacity such as high speed transportation of rail freight, enlargement of BT train, development of double stack train, etc. between railway transport hubs. If the transport capacity between railway logistics hubs is increased as planned, we must increase the handling capacity of railway hub terminals. But there are limits to enlarge the terminal infrastructure because of investment scale, location circumstances and urban development plans. To ensure the capacity, with the minimum required enlargement of infrastructure, it is necessary to extremely increase the efficiency of terminal operations. For improving the efficiency, we have to introduce the efficient terminal operation systems based on u-IT and operation optimize technologies. In this paper, we analyse the issues and problems of railway terminals(including ICD) and suggest the concept of intelligent railway terminal and the construction components of technology.

  • Green Internet of Things (IoT) is the study and practice of eco-friendly sustainable computing. The basic goal of green computing is to reduce the use of materials and maximize energy efficiency with reliable and secure communications. The paper presents various technologies and issues regarding green IoT. It also studies the green Information and Communication Technology (ICT) such as green M2M, green Cloud Computing (CC), and green Data Center (DC). In addition, this paper mentions about the reliability in IoT Communication and and issues to achieve green IoT communication by applying efficient activity scheduling technique for energy saving. Finally, we propose the green IoT-Home Service (GIHS) model which provides efficient energy management in home automation system.

  • Post industrial technologies have improved human standard of living, however, a host of negative environmental consequences from the unlimited industrial appetite have posed serious global challenges. Remanufacturing is an industrial manufacturing process that is to restore old products to perform like a new and to save energy, natural resources, landfill space and to reduce air pollution by less re-smelting. By extending product life cycle, remanufacturing gives us enormous opportunities for sustainable development of our society. This paper introduces current state of the art and future perspective in the field of automotive remanufacturing focusing on alternator and start motor. The results could be used as a basic information for further remanufacturing applications in Korea.

Remanufacturing is an industrial manufacturing process that is to restore old products to perform like a new and to save energy, natural resources, landfill space and to reduce air pollution by less re-smelting. By extending product lift cycle, remanufacturing gives us enormous opportunities for sustainable development of our society. This paper introduces needs and current state of the art in the field of remanufacturing, also analyzes old products in terms of product variety and wear conditions with an example of automobile alternators. Then, a general and a product-specified remanufacturing process will be determined with them. Finally, this paper shows systemized guidelines for remanufacturing process of the specified parts. The results could be also used as a basic information for further remanufacturing applications.

  • With the rising social interest in the sustainable life, demands are growing for Hanok, as a viable alternative to modernized architecture of Western origin. However, even Hanok is gaining popularity among the general public, its design and construction are still a minor practice. Aiming to build an information system of Hanok, this research proposes a new design process for traditional architecture, utilizing a parametric design methodology. This process, based on the understanding of tectonic joints and spatial composition of our traditional architecture, defines a parametric relationship among the structural elements that compose Hanok. The research uses Gehry Technologies' Digital Project and Autodesk Revit Architecture to apply a concurrent parametric design methodology, approaching the project in both bottom-up and top-down to present a new design process for Hanok elements.

A "Fabric-First" Approach to Sustainable Tall Building Design

  • This research suggests the most effective way for improving energy efficiency in tall buildings is a "fabric-first" approach. This involves optimizing the performance of the building form and envelope as a first priority, with additional technologies a secondary consideration. The paper explores a specific fabric-first energy standard known as "Passivhaus". Buildings that meet this standard typically use 75% less heating and cooling. The results show tall buildings have an intrinsic advantage in achieving Passivhaus performance, as compared to low-rise buildings, due to their compact form, minimizing heat loss. This means high-rises can meet Passivhaus energy standards with double-glazing and moderate levels of insulation, as compared to other typologies where triple-glazing and super-insulation are commonplace. However, the author also suggests that designers need to develop strategies to minimize overheating in Passivhaus high-rises, and reduce the quantity of glazing typical in high-rise residential buildings, to improve their energy efficiency.

  • This research has been focused upon and analyzing Medison, once a leading New Technology-Based Finn (N1BF) in Korea with exceptionally advanced technology in 3D ultrasound diagnostic imaging devices (UDIDs) (armored with 23 subsidiaries at its peak expansion), from the perspective of Dynamic Finn Capability(DFC). The underlying hypothesis is that the various problems from its pointless pursuit of the business styles or precedents of the existing large firms might be traced to its specific characteristics as an NTBF, which should have more preferably been based upon the distinctive competences such as differentiated technologies, institutional linkages, organizational routines, and complementary assets, etc. In conclusion, for the NTBFs with different DFC domains from those of the large firms, the optimal external linkages and comprehensive integration efforts (Process) under their specific organizational characteristics and constraints (path) are highly recommended for the continuous accumulation of their core capabilities based upon the technological assets (Position).

Beam Efficiency of Wireless Power Transmission via Radio Waves from Short Range to Long Range

  • Wireless power transmission (WPT) is useful technology in near future. There are some kinds of the WPT technologies, WPT via radio waves, resonance coupling, and inductive. Especially the WPT via radio waves is used for multi-purposes from short range to long range application. However, unfortunately it is misunderstood that it is low efficiency and low power. In this paper, I show the theory of beam efficiency between transmitting antennas and receiving antennas and also show some high efficient applications of the WPT via radio waves. Especially, I pick up a wireless power charging system of an electric vehicle and show the experimental results. I show difference between the theory of beam efficiency and the experimental results of short range WPT. I indicate that reasons of poor beam efficiency in the experiment are (1) change of impedance caused by mutual coupling between transmitting antennas and receiving antennas, (2) oblique direction of microwave power to receiving antennas caused by short distance.
