A Comparative Analysis of TLSF Program for the Sustainable Future and the Curriculum for Korean Environmental Education (지속 가능한 미래를 위한 교수${\cdot}$학습 프로그램(TLSF Program)과 우리나라 환경 교육과정 비교 분석)

  • In this study a comparative analysis is conducted to evaluate TLSF(Teaching and Learning for a Sustainable Future) program, which is a module type environmental education program developed by UNESCO, and the Korean environmental education curriculum. The Korean environmental curriculum is mainly focused on conceptualization and the matters of fact. As a result, students may not be able to acquire contextualized and synthesized views on the environmental problems. The Korean environmental curriculum hardly supplies ample variety in the methods of teaching, learning and assessment, or the theories characteristic of the environmental education. Thus it would not make a useful material for teachers to reorganize various materials to be applied in class. TLSF program would be useful for a teacher to use in the environment education field because it supplies not only many various activities and samples for constructing a proper program but also the theoretical base and examples for education and assessment strategy. Finally, TLSF also offers the theoretical base of the environment education for the assessment, and it makes the best use of feedback from the environment educational field for improving its own quality. In conclusion, this study can be a meaningful preview for those who are involved in the process of developing of a curriculum, which consists of steps like formulating theories for developing a curriculum, organizing the curriculum contents, activating and evaluating a curriculum.

Future Directions and Perspectives on Soil Environmental Researches (토양환경분야 연구동향 및 전망)

  • This paper reviews the future directions and perspectives on the soil environmental researches in the 21 century. Previously, the principal emphasis of soil environmental researches had put on the enhancement of food and fiber productions. Beside the basic function of soil, however, the societal needs on soil resources in the 21st century have demands for several environmental and social challenges, occurring regionally or globally. Typical global issues with which soil science should deal include food security with increasing agronomic production to meet the exploding world population growth, adaptation and mitigation of climate change, increase of the carbon sequestration, supply of the biomass and bioenergy, securing the water resource and quality, protection of environmental pollution, enhancing the biodiversity and ecosystem health, and developing the sustainable farming/cropping system that improve the use efficiency of water and agricultural resources. These challenges can be solved through the sustainable crop production intensification (SCPI) or plant welfare concept in which soil plays a key role in solving the abovementioned global issues. Through implementation of either concept, soil science can fulfill the goal of the modern agriculture which is the sustainable production of crops while maintaining or enhancing the ecosystem function, quality and health. Therefore, directions of the future soil environmental researches should lie on valuing soil as an ecosystem services, translating research across both temporal and spatial scales, sharing and using data already available for other purposes, incorporating existing and new technologies from other disciplines, collaborating across discipline, and translating soil research into information for stakeholders and end users. Through the outcomes of these approaches, soil can enhance the productivity from the same confined land, increase profitability, conserve natural resource, reduce the negative impact on environment, enhance human nutrition and health, and enhance natural capital and the flow of ecosystem services. Soil is the central dogma, final frontier and new engine for the era of sustainability development in the $21^{st}$ century and thus soil environmental researches should be carried according to this main theme.

  • The purpose of this study is to review estuary-related research conducted in South Korea over the past 20 years and is to suggest future research directions for the major rivers in South Korea. By analyzing studies published in domestic academic journals since 2001, we classified and organized research related to the estuaries of major rivers. Existing research has primarily focused on defining estuaries, assessing their physical conditions, and examining water resource conservation measures in terms of water flow, supply, and quality. Future research might need to explore legal, social, economic, and environmental approaches for integrated water management. This study highlights the importance of integrated estuary management and provides fundamental data for sustainable water management.

  • This study is cases study of sustainable eco-friendly cosmetics packages. The importance of eco-friendly packages has been increasing as environmental issues have recently emerged around the world. Domestic cosmetics industry are releasing sustainable package designs with these changes, but they are limited. In this study, sustainable package criteria were divided and analyzed based on each of the five prior studies of domestic and foreign cases. Studies have confirmed that there is no diversity in the materials and designs of sustainable packages in Korea compared with other countries. Also, it could be seen that there was the lack of consumer-led eco-friendly campaigns. Starting point of research, it is expected that this study may help continue to study better sustainable cosmetics packages in the future.

An educational needs analysis of sustainable dietary education for nutrition teachers: an application of the IPA, Borich needs assessment and The locus for focus model (지속가능한 식생활교육에 대한 영양(교)사의 교육요구도 분석: IPA, Borich 요구도, The locus for focus 모델 적용)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the importance and performance levels of sustainable dietary education across the health, environment, and society domains as perceived by nutrition teachers and evaluate the needs and priorities for sustainable dietary education. Methods: An online survey was conducted for 151 nutrition teachers in Jeollanam-do. The survey included 20 questions across the health, environment, and society domains. The data were analyzed using a paired-sample t-test, the importance-performance analysis (IPA), the Borich needs assessment, and The locus for focus model. Results: Overall, the average importance levels of the 20 items of sustainable dietary education were significantly higher than their average performance levels (4.44 vs. 3.68). The examination of each educational domain revealed that although the importance of education in the health domain was recognized and actively practiced by the nutrition teachers, the performance was comparatively lower in the environment and society domains. The Borich needs assessment and the locus for focus model identified education on biodiversity conservation, plant-based protein, and the use of local food as the top-priority group in the environment domain along with fair and ethical food, food security, regional food culture, food policy and trade, and family dining culture as the second-priority group in the society domain. Conclusion: The results of this study underscore the need to support the nutrition teachers' perception and practice of sustainable dietary education in the environment and society domains. We believe that the educational needs and priorities proposed in this study will be considered in the future development and modification of sustainable dietary education programs.

  • The purpose of this research is to present basic data for the residents, experts, and administrators to establish sustainable and future-oriented experience villages by investigating the operational realities of rural and mountain experience villages that have currently been promoted as the government-supported projects. First, in order to establish a sustainable experience village, each of the residents, experts and administrators who are the principal agents for cultivating the village should perform their role appropriately and build an organic cooperative system. The residents should have a sense of ownership and form a sense of solidarity by organizing communal consultation system. The experts should be able to present feasible project plans. The administrators need to have posture of understanding from the viewpoint of residents. In order to establish sustainable experience villages, ecological, cultural, and social values should be conveyed preferentially, and through this, the living spaces like farm villages should be formed.

  • A current environmental issue, 'Enviromentally Sound and Sustainable Development(ESSD)' is very important in that it is for our common future. Environmental education is essential as a long-term strategy to realize sustainable environments and society. So we developed a new program about ESSD. The purposes of development were as follows. First, introduce ESSD to students, second, make them know ESSD appropriate to our nation, third, make change from economy-centered thoughts to environmental economy-centered thoughts, ultimately make form behaviors related to ESSD. To verify the effects of new developed program, the direct learning was carried out by 212 students in total. Post test scores of experimental groups were significantly higher than those of control groups about four goals, respectively. Therefore this program is effective to achieve four goals of environmental education for ESSD.

In this paper, we analyze trends of domestic and foreign smart cities and the smart city organization of local governments, and describe the direction of local government's smart city organization system to realize sustainable smart city.

A Study on Elementary School Teachers' Needs for Future School Spaces - With a Focus on A Public Elementary School in Seoul - (초등학교 교사의 미래학교에 대한 공간 요구 탐색 연구 - 서울 공립 A초등학교를 중심으로 -)

  • This study was conducted to provide implications so that teachers' voices are heard in the social consensus for future schools by exploring teachers' needs for future school spaces. A qualitative study was performed to listen to teachers' voices directly, and 10 teachers from "A" Elementary School (tentative name) participated in the study. The study 1) recognized the emergence of learning that transcends time and space, and emphasized the importance of an ICT-based informatization environment that can support such learning, 2) confirmed the characteristics of futuristic school spaces centered on "tradition" and "technology," 3) recognized the importance of learning community spaces, 4) emphasized "variable" classrooms for flexible teaching and learning activities, and 5) confirmed the need to introduce eco-friendly elements and provide support for those who may be vulnerable in high-tech learning environments. Finally, the study concluded that teachers need systematic education and experiences that contain sufficient important discourses related to future schools such as "eco-friendliness" and "connection with local communities".

Considering Concepts and Principles of Marine Spatial Management for Sustainable Use of Marine Resources (지속가능한 이용을 위한 해양공간관리의 개념과 원칙에 대한 고찰)

  • The rapid industrial and technological development has made the human activities for the utilization of marine resources more complex. Marine spatial management is a space-based approach. It is a comprehensive and integrated management approach. The ultimate goal of marine spatial management is the "sustainable use" of marine resources. The partial approach is applied in the existing marine spatial management, mainly coastal zones which involves integrated approach. Also this showed various limitations including restricted mostly to coastal zones, and limitation to implementation tools. However, for marine spatial management to have a reasonable approach that attaches importance to the relationship between humans and the holistic ecosystem, it is important to internalize a central principle in marine spatial management that focuses on the sustainable use of marine resources. In the present study, four central principles are proposed that will eventually be applied through marine spatial management planning tools. These principles are 1) the establishment of a cooperative decision making and planning system that is based on stakeholder participation; 2) scientific assessment of the current status and impact on the basis of ecology, sociology, and economics; 3) reasonable and optimal spatial assignment based on the forecasting of future-use characteristics and environmental changes; and 4) ascribing importance to the implementation of the results of rational planning processes.
