  • While tall buildings are an essential building type to accommodate an ever-growing urban population, as buildings become taller and taller, many design challenges arise. As floor spaces are repeated vertically, the occupants' natural horizontal circulation-based social interactions are limited. As buildings become ever taller, safe evacuation to the ground level becomes more challenging in emergencies. With respect to safety as well as serviceability, one of the most fundamental design challenges of exceedingly tall buildings is their structural systems that make the physical existence of tall buildings possible. While many different design solutions can be sought to resolve these issues as well as other design challenges of extremely tall buildings, this paper investigates the potential of conjoined towers to create more livable and sustainable vertical environments. Emphasis is placed on the social and structural capabilities of conjoined towers in providing enhanced social interactions and more efficient ultra-tall structures. The related brief history of conjoined towers is presented. To understand their current status, contemporary design practices of conjoined towers are discussed. Lastly, a new concept of superframed conjoined towers developed for exceedingly tall building complexes is introduced through design studies. Though envisioning future tall buildings is challenging, conjoined towers can be among the strong candidates toward more livable and sustainable vertical urbanism.

  • While many assessment systems for buildings and indoor environment have been created with increasing interest in sustainable development, assessments for sustainable landscaping and outdoor environments have received less attention. Recently, the Sustainable Site Initiatives(SITES) was developed in the USA in order to evaluate and certify sustainable landscape design projects. The purposes of this study are to analyze sustainable landscape strategies and to review the certification system through case studies of SITES certified projects. Three certified projects in Texas were selected and literature review, site visits and interview were conducted. The results indicated that various sustainable and practical strategies were applied including soil preservation, use of native plants and recycled materials, and water harvesting. Also, SITES has benefits to encourage an integrated design process, community participation, and environmental education for the public. This suggests that a certification system for landscaping and outdoor environments needs to be developed to ensure sustainable site development, which helps extend the roles of the landscape architecture profession in sustainable design.

  • In order to create humanitarian living environment with sustainable ecological environment, urban regeneration project has been implemented recently seeking diverse methods for residents'participation stressing the process of communication with the residents changing from the existing one way planning by limited number of experts. Particularly, it is essential to develop systematic tools to promote the voluntary and positive participation of the residents because residents have to perform as the master of urban streetscape design project that requires sophisticated knowledge and experience and also because the residents have to function as sustainable maintainers and managers of their streetscape. This study intends to identify the organizational structure and major contents of design guideline as a tool to support the voluntary and positive participation of the residents in streetscape maintenance. For this purpose based on the structural system and characteristics of Chicago streetscape design guideline that was developed as tool for residents' participation, efforts were made to set up framework of design guideline for sustainable streetscape project with the users' participation with their overall understanding and trust. In detail, the author studied the resident participatory process for sustainable maintenance and management in a long term landscape project and the principle and theories of design planning for streetscape that supports the utilizing behaviors of the users, and how this information should be linked and organized to form the structure and contents of design guideline. As a tool supporting residents' participation and helping the residents perform the responsible function as sustainable maintainers and managers of their streetscape through social maturity with ontological sense of masters of their local community as they experience the gradual processes of their streetscape maintenance project, streetscape design guideline has its meaning in the efforts that tried to achieve deep participation of the residents through researches converging the two academic sectors of urban architecture and social psychology.

  • This research aims at proposing new space design model with eco-friendly material, paper, for sustainable life mode. As pro-natural paper which is feasible for secondary processing in interior design, it's significance lies in its easy adaptability to nature and depreciation of environment pollution. The target space which needs alterability is designed with corrugated paper as its eco-friendly and changeable features as corrugated paper made out of wood pulp would return to nature after decomposition. If the material will be recycling, reuseable, and renewable which are eco-friendly and durable, then sustainable space design would be created.

  • Considering the impact of buildings beyond their outline to our environment is the first step towards sustainable architecture. As we are still in the early days of sustainable design and its technology, we should make predictions about the design options. architecture activities in project is needed to predict more locally, nationally, globally not only present but future energy demand. The role of the architects who pioneered sustainable design is significantly important, that is to say architects should become a team leader rather than the sole form-giver and come up with the integrated idea related to each field such as the structural, mechanical and electrical engineers includes an energy specialist, in some cases, an independent Design Facilitator. In other words architects have to suggest goals and alternatives for human-being and biodiversity to sustainable life as well as vision of architecture.

  • Since the late 1990s Korean housing authorities and private companies have been pursuing various initiatives towards sustainable neighbourhood design, however, there has been no attempt to examine their progress. This research aims to suggest a sustainability evaluation framework and analyse the progress of sustainability of a cutting edge project: Shinjung Environmentally Friendly Housing Estate Development, using that framework. The results of the analysis suggest that the project failed to make Significant progress in the sustainability evaluation criteria compared to normal projects in Korea and there exist significant barriers: economic/financial barriers; institutional/structural barriers; and implementation barriers within current planning and design practices. Most of the project's design strategies were simply adopted and used as a marketing tool without public participation, sustainability targets or benchmarking for sustainability. Furthermore, most of the responsibility for maintenance was left to residents who normally lack the knowledge, experience, interest and money to carry out such tasks. These problems cause significant concerns over the future success of the project toward sustainability. The experience of the Shinjung project also highlights the need for a more proactive central and local government stance towards sustainable neighborhood design.

  • Sustainable furniture designs are expressed through reutilization, reuse or redesign of the whole of part of natural materials and existing products. These designs contain natural emotions and show those propensities such as uncertainty, integrity, essentiality and experimental natures. Designs that use natural materials such as wood, bamboo, cork, plants, stones and water have sufficient beauty in themselves and thus these materials are not specially processed but their essence is pursued in those designs. Of those materials, the natural material water is used to pursue the essence of aqua while presenting a new furniture design through an experimental method. The circularity of aqua shares its meaning with the circularity of sustainable designs. In addition, the liquidity of aqua will be grafted onto IT technology to express variable shapes in order to present a new direction of furniture designs.
