A Study on Green Building Certification Criteria of Educational Facilities based on LEED Certified Cases (LEED 인증사례 분석을 통한 교육시설의 녹색건축 인증기준에 관한 연구)

  • Sustainability became the keyword of our society worldwide, and it is undoubtful that buildings are mainly responsible for green house gas emission and energy consumption. Among different project types, educational facility was selected in this study to find out what needs to be addressed in order to provide students better learning environments. Scorecards from 32 LEED certified school projects went through analysis and essential components as design strategies in sustainable educational facilities were extracted based on application rate of each credit in LEED for School(2009). The extracted data were further analyzed in comparison with related components in G-SEED. The results would be used as guidelines for those of who design sustainable education facilities and prepare green building certifications. and it would further foster architect's responsibility towards green society in Korea.

Financial Sustainability of Nonprofit Organizations: Determinants of Fundraising Campaigns on Donation Intention

  • Purpose: As nonprofit organizations have made strides in international development, ensuring financial resources has become pivotal to determine what nonprofits strive for and how they perform with the budget generated without efforts for profit-making. The purpose of this research aims to investigate the determinants of donation intention that are affected by television fundraising campaigns in order to improve financial sustainability. This study applied the effects of emotional sympathy, economic value, accountability, relevance, and sustainability on donation intention. Research design, data, and methodology: This study collected data via an online survey by classifying respondents based on donation experiences and applied statistical analyses such as factor analysis, regression, and ANOVA. This study selected television fundraising campaigns aligned with criteria of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Results: The results of this study showed that emotional sympathy was a dominant variable regardless of previous donation experiences, while economic value was significant for inexperienced donors. Conclusions: The results provide implications to nonprofit organizations for fundraising as to what aspects need to be addressed in order to draw donors' motivation for giving behavior. Given efforts for successful implementation of development agenda, it is fundamental to establish financial sustainability of nonprofit organizations and build up public awareness.

  • Sustainable development has become a growing concern throughout the world. Construction industry also has participated in the efforts to minimize the environmental impacts. In Korea, the government has already established the green construction certification(G-seed) and guidelines for sustainable construction. However, domestic guidelines are focused on the design and construction phase, not on the construction project. In addition, it is difficult to find instructions due to the complex structure based on the work unit. Therefore this study aims to deduct the component structure for sustainable construction guidelines in the planning, design and construction phases by utilizing the Factor Analysis. Following the literature review, a total of 26 criteria were identified. Further, a survey was conducted to capture the perceptions on the importance of the criteria. According to the factor analysis, the criteria can be grouped into 8 factors : Environmental factors management, Management planning, Cost and Design management, Energy management, Material management, Certification and regulation management, General Management and Others.

Assessment of Criteria for selecting Rainwater Management Strategies (도시 물순환 건전화를 위한 빗물관리 계획요소 평가)

  • The purpose of this study is to draw out objective bases for selecting various applicable facilities in case of the establishment of rainwater management strategies. To do so, sixteen facilities were selected from decentralized rainwater management systems that induce rainwater infiltration and detention as well as centralized end-of-pipe type infiltration and detention facilities in local areas. With these facilities, it attempted to evaluate them in terms of sustainability, pollutant elimination, flood control capacity and costs and subsequently analyzed correlations between each characteristic. The outcomes of the analysis were as follows: First was the analysis of characteristics between decentralized rainwater management systems and end-of-pipe rainwater management systems. From the decentralized rainwater management systems, the mulden-rigolen system and grass swale at street level had the highest in the total of the four items while the totals of the underground detention tank and temporary detention site were highest in end-of-pipe rainwater management systems. After analyzing the correlation between different types of facilities and each variable, it can be said that decentralized rainwater management systems have a higher correlation than end-of-pipe rainwater management systems in terms of sustainability whereas the latter are better in flood control capacity than the former. Second, the analysis of correlation in variables of each facility is as follows: first, there is a negative correlation between sustainability value and flood control capacity value; and there is a positive correlation between flood control capability and pollutants elimination. In addition, it revealed that the higher the flood control and pollutant elimination capability the higher the facility costs. Based on these assessments, it is possible to use them as objective selection criteria for facility application in case of site development project or complex plan.

A Study on Sustainable Outdoor Space of Regional Public Hospitals (지역거점공공병원의 지속가능한 외부공간에 대한 연구)

  • Purpose: Since hospitals have a big impact on the natural and social environment, hospitals' sustainability must be considered in various aspects including environmental, social, and economical aspects. So far, research on sustainable hospitals has mainly been conducted on indoor environment, but outdoor space of hospital is as important as well. The purpose of this research is to study the sustainability of hospital outdoor space and to make proposals for improving sustainable regional public hospitals. Methods: Through preceding research analysis and literature review, the concept of sustainable outdoor space of hospital was defined. Also, the evaluation contents of outdoor space were extracted from domestic and foreign green building certification criteria. With this analytic frame, we visited 4 regional public hospitals in Korea, interviewed the facility managers, and analyzed sustainability of hospital outdoor space. Results: Analysis of 4 regional public hospitals reveals that there is a lack of consideration for sustainability in all 4 categories; urban and network, natural environment, community, and user. In terms of community, sustainability has rarely been applied to all four hospitals. The site selection and terrain of the site were essential to sustainability. Implications: Establishing a master plan considering future expansion is critical. Also more attempt to show regional characteristics is needed. It is necessary to design a comprehensive outdoor space that considers sustainability and also healing environment. Level difference in the site can be used as a design element.

  • In Korea, sustainability is mandatory in every field. University campuses are educational facilities that consume considerable amounts of energy. Therefore, many universities have tried to take advantage of the last opportunity to prepare students with sustainability and leadership. This study compared the green campus policy and evaluation criteria among Korea, US AASHE, UNEP, and ISCN-GULF to vitalize the green campus movement and suggest recent research data for the Korea green campus accreditation. The results are as follows: 1. new evaluation criteria need to be added to the certified green building total floor area ratio instead of adapting the G-SEED system in the Campus Resource & Environments category; 2. Korean Green Campus Evaluations need to be improved when expressing the campus individuality by choosing an increased number of credits and criteria; and 3. new evaluation criteria are required to secure the result, feedback, and products from curriculum updates in the Campus Education category.

A Study on the Criteria and Characteristics of New Material for Housing Space Focused on Sustainability (지속가능한 측면에서의 주거공간 신소재의 기준 및 특성)

  • The study was to grasp features of new material applicable to housing space in the sustainable side by analyzing materialistic features of new material and features of sustainable material with sustainable new material. Through analysis on sustainable new material, the study deducted the below conclusion. First, through the precedent studies, the characteristics of sustainable materials have been classified into eight categories : friendly healthiness, non-toxicity, comfortableness, naturality, recycling, harmlessness of environment, separate collection, reusability. After the criteria have been brought up from new material applicable to housing space in the sustainable. Second, in materialistic Characteristics of new material, 'New Process' was mainly applied. There was no any new material applied to 'new raw material'. Therefore, it is thought that it is necessary to study on development of perfectly new material and to study on new material to apply material used in other fields to finishing material of dwelling space. Third, in Characteristics of sustainable material, 'Re-serviceability' appeared most and 'Non-toxicity' and 'Recycling' appeared in the next. 'Friendly Healthiness' and 'Separate collection' appeared only one on the other side. Therefore, it is judged that it is necessary to develop and study new material including health components considering user's health, function for health increase and function to grope comfort for humans. Finally, after researching and analysis the criteria by recently presented the new material, it has been concluded that the standard can be used as the criteria of new material for the possibility of application in housing space. On the basis of the study, the author will carry out analysis on sustainable new material minutely and utilize it as basic data to suggest a standard of sustainable new material applicable to dwelling space in the future.

Progress Analysis of Montreal Process Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management in Terms of Data Availability and Applicability (지속가능(持續可能)한 산림경영(山林經營)을 위한 몬트리올 프로세스 기준(基準)과 지표(指標)의 가용성(可用性)과 적용성(適用性)에 대한 분석(分析))

  • Since the development of a new paradigm of sustainable forest management, concerns have been focused on how the sustainability of forests will be assessed and measured objectively. This study examined the conceptual displacement on what is sustainability of forests, and analyzed the progress made by international and regional initiatives on criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management in terms of comparability and compatibility. Regarding data availability and applicability of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management, the data reports gathered from Montreal Process member countries were analyzed. Within this context, Korean case were examined, using all possible existing information sources such as Forest Statistics, on 6 items of concepts of criteria and indicators, degree of difficulties, measurement units, data availabilities, problems and needs of future improvements for data gathering. The study also analyzed the applicability of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management.

Thermal Hazard Evaluation on Self-polymerization of MDI

  • Thermal analysis, heating test on gram scale and simulation of exothermic behavior based on kinetic analysis has been conducted in order to evaluate thermal hazards of self-polymerization of MDI. The exothermic reactions of MDI are expected to be the polymerization which forms carbodiimide and carbon dioxide, dimerization and trimerization. When MDI is kept in adiabatic condition during 1 week (10080 hours), the simulated result shows runaway reaction can occur in the case that initial temperature was more than $130^{\circ}C$. The relationship between the initial temperature (T, $^{\circ}C$) and TMR is given in a following equation. TMR=$4.493{\times}10^{-7}$ exp ($9.532{\times}10^3$/(T+273.15)) We propose that the relationship gives important criteria of handling temperature of MDl to prevent a runaway reaction.

A Study on the Extraction of Assessment Items of the Sustainability in the Multifamily Housing (공동주택 지속가능성 평가항목 선정에 관한 연구)

  • The environmental problems aren't only restricted in single area or country, but also related in all around the world. Various approaches have been tried to protect and utilize properly the environment. Especially, building area has been attempted to provide the model which could explain the degree of environmental influence and technology development criteria to lessen the environmental impact in building life cycle. The environmental impact in the building life cycle can be overally explained with sustainability. Sustainability can be utilized to establish the target level of building to environmental influence. This paper aimed at extracting items to evaluate the building sustainability, divided into social, economic and environmental aspects. First, 93-items is extracted from 3 areas through existing literature review. Second, the 93-items would be controlled and reviewed into 21 items, which are five social aspect items, two economic aspect items and twelve environmental items, because 93 items can not properly be applied and evaluated. And, it provided the model to combine the extracted items of each area. In social aspect, the outdoor noise is more affect than any other items. In environmental aspect, the item of surface-to-volume is more affect than any other items.
