Application of magnetic activated sludge process for a milking parlor wastewater treatment with nitrogen and phosphorus recovery

  • Milking parlor wastewater contains high concentration suspended solid (SS), nitrogen, and/or phosphate as well as organic compounds. A new biological wastewater process by magnetic separation, magnetic activated sludge (MAS) process, was applied to milking parlor wastewater treatment process. A three step wastewater treatment process of coagulation sedimentation / ammonia stripping (C/S), magnetic activated sludge process and contact oxidation (CO) was proposed for removal of these pollutants. First step, C/S process recovered 96% TN and 96% PO43--P as resource for fertilizer from the wastewater. 81% biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in wastewater was removed after MAS process. As a results, all pollutant concentrations satisfied Japanese effluent standards. Most of residual BOD and SS were removed by the CO process. It was estimated that the proposed process could reduce the process space to 1/7.

호기성 그래뉼 슬러지를 이용한 축산폐수의 생물학적 처리에 관한 연구 (Biological Treatment of Livestock Wastewater using Aerobic Granular Sludge )

  • In this study, the treatment of livestock wastewater using an aerobic granular sludge based sequencing batch reactor was investigated. The reactor operation was carried out by general injection and split injection methods. The average removal efficiency of organic matter after the adaptation period was 71.5 and 87.4%, respectively. Some untreated organic matter was attributed to recalcitrant organic matter. The average removal efficiency of total nitrogen was 65.6 and 88.4%, respectively. These results indicate that the denitrification reaction by split injection was carried out smoothly. As for the solids, the ratio of aerobic granular sludge/mixed liquor suspended solid can be determined as the main factor of the process operation, and the ratio increased gradually and finally reached 86.0%. Correspondingly, the sludge volume index (SVI) was also improved, reaching 54 mL/g at the end of operation, and it is believed that the application of a short settling time contributed to the improvement of settleability.

전기펜톤공정을 이용한 석유화학공장 폐활성슬러지의 감량화 가능성 평가 (A study on reduction of excess sludge in activated sludge system from a petrochemical plant using electro fenton process)

  • The reduction of excess activated sludge from petrochemical plant was investigated by the electro fenton (E-Fenton) process using electrogenerated hydroxyl radicals which lead to mineralization of activated sludge to $CO_2$, water and inorganic ions. Factors affecting the disintegration efficiency of excess activated sludge in E-Fenton process were examined in terms of five criteria: pH, $H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ molar ratio, current density, initial MLSS (mixed liquid suspended solids) concentration, $H_2O_2$ feeding mode. TSS total suspended solid and $TCOD_{cr}$ reduction rate increased with the increasing $H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ molar ratio and current density until 42 and $6.7 mA/cm^2$, respectively but further increase of $H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ molar ratio and current density would reduce the reduction rate. On the other hand, as expected, increasing pH and initial MLSS concentration of activated sludge decreas TSS and $TCOD_{cr}$ reduction rate. The E-Fenton process was gradually increased during first 30 minutes and then linearly proceed till 120 minutes. The optimal E-Fenton condition showed TSS reduction rate of 62~63% and $TCOD_{cr}$ (total chemical oxygen demand) reduction rate of 55~56%. Molar ratio $H_2O_2/Fe^{2+} = 42$ was determined as optimal E-Fenton condition with initial $Fe^{2+}$ dose of 5.4 mM and current density of $6.7{\sim}13.3 mA/cm^2$, initial MLSS of 7,600 mg/L and pH 2 were chosen as the most efficient E-Fenton condition.

키토산 분자량에 따른 Rhodamine 6G-Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate계의 응집효과에 관한 연구 (Effect of Molecular Weight of Chitosan on Flocculation of Suspended Solids in Rhodamine 6G-Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate System)

  • 산업폐기물인 꽃게의 껍질로부터 chitin을 탈아세틸화시켜 분자량이 서로 다른 chitosan을 제조하였다. Rhodamine 6G(Rh 6G)-sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)계 및 Rh 6G-chitosan계들의 흡수 및 형과 spectra를 조사하였고, chitosan의 분자량 및 pH에 따른 Rh 6G-SDS-chitosan계의 응집효과에 대해 조사하였다. Rh 6G-SDS계의 흡광도나 형광세기는 S/D(SDS 농도/Rh 6G 농도)=32 이하에서 감소하다가 그 이상에서 다시 증가하였다. 부유물질(SS) 제거율이나 투광도로부터 S/D=32에서 chitosan을 첨가한 Rh 6G-SDS-chitosan계의 응집 성능이 Rh 6G-SDS계에 비해 훨씬 우수함을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 chitosan의 농도나 분자량이 크면 클수록, S/D 첨가 범위는 32에서 100까지 확대되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 부유물질의 제거율은 chitosan의 분자량이 클수록 pH 2∼9에서 우수한 성능을 가지는 반면, pH 12 이상에서 부유물질의 제거율은 현저히 저하되는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • Wheel형 분무건조기에서 식품첨가제로 사용되는 치즈분말의 건조공정을 반응표면법에 의하여 원료의 고형분함량, wheel 회전속도 및 출구온도를 독립변수로 하고 분말제품의 수분함량, 겉보기밀도, 분말 입자크기 및 현탁액의 점도를 종속변수로 하여 중심합성계획법에 따라 분산분석한 후 유의성과 상관관계를 검증하였다. 독립변수와 종속변수들의 상관관계를 검증한 결과 입자크기와 수분함량은 wheel의 회전속도가 커질수록 감소하였고, 겉보기밀도는 출구온도가 높아짐에 따라 감소하였다. 현탁액의 점도는 wheel의 회전속도와 고형분함량이 커짐에 따라 증가하였다. 분말제품의 종속변수들의 상관관계에서 수분함량과 겉보기밀도는 비례 관계, 입자크기는 수분함량과 겉보기밀도와 반비례의 관계를 나타내었다.

Long-term Seasonal and Interannual Variability of Epilimnetic Nutrients (N, P), Chlorophyll-a, and Suspended Solids at the Dam Site of Yongdam Reservoir and Empirical Models

  • The objectives of the study were to evaluate seasonal patterns of epilimnetic water quality, and determine interannual eutrophication patterns at the dam site of Yong-dam Reservoir using long-term data during 2002~2009. Ionic dilutions, based on specific conductivity, occurred in the summer period in response to the intense monsoon rain and inflow, and suspended solid analysis indicated that the reservoir was clear except for the monsoon. Seasonality of nitrogen contents varied depending on the types of nitrogen and responded to ionic dilution; Ammonia-nitrogen ($NH_4$-N) peaked at dry season but nitrate-nitrogen ($NO_3$-N) peaked in the monsoon when the ionic dilution occurred. The maxima of $NO_3$-N seemed to be related with external summer N-loading from the watershed and active nitrogen fixation of bluregreens in the summer. $NO_3$-N was major determinant (>50%) of the total nitrogen pool and relative proportion of $NH_4$-N was minor. Long-term annual $NO_3$-N and TDN showed continuous increasing trends from 2004 to 2009, whereas TP and TDP showed decreasing trends along with chlorophyll-a (CHL) values. Empirical model analysis of log-transformed nutrients and N : P ratios on the CHL showed that the reservoir CHL had a stronger linear function with TP ($R^2$=0.89, p<0.001) than TN ($R^2$=0.35, p=0.120). Overall results suggest that eutrophication progress, based on TP and CHL, is slow down over the study period and this was mainly due to reduced phosphorns, which is considered as primary nutrient by the empirical model.

대청호와 하류하천 연속시스템의 2차원 수리·모의 (Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Simulations for a Coinjunctive System of Daecheong Reservoir and Its Downstream)

  • Most of our rivers are fragmented by the presence of at least one large dam. Dams are often the most substantial controller of the flow regimes and aquatic environments of natural river system. The quality of downstream water released from a stratified reservoir is highly dependent on upstream reservoir water quality. Thus, an integrated modeling approach is more efficient, compared to fragmented modeling approach, and necessary to better interpret the impact of dam operation on the down stream water quality. The objectives of this study were to develop an integrated reservoir-river modeling system for Daecheong Reservoir and its downstream using a two-dimensional laterally averaged hydrodynamic and water quality model, and evaluate the model's performance against field measurement data. The integrated model was calibrated and verified using filed data obtained in 2004 and 2006. The model showed satisfactory performance in predicting temporal variations of water stage, temperature, and suspended solid concentration. In addition, the reservoir-river model showed efficient computation time as it took only 3 hours for one year simulation using personal computer (1.88 Ghz, 1.00 GB RAM). The suggested modeling system can be effectively used for assisting integrated management of reservoir and river water quality.

  • 남해 중부해역에서 적조발생과 관련해서 적조 다발월인 여름과 초가을에 기온과 마찬가지로 높은 수온을 유지한다. 또한 많은 강수량에 의하여 부유물질 및 영양염류가 증가하고 염분이 대체로 떨어지는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이때 적조의 bloom으로 인하여 대표적인 영양염류인 질소와 인의 값이 떨어진다. 그리고 적조생물의 사후 미생물 분해 작용이 활발하여 산소의 소모가 증가하여 용존산소가 급격히 떨어지고 화학적산소요구량이 높게 나타나는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이때 식물성플랑크톤의 성장 제한인자로 작용하는 부유물질, 인산염, 질산염의 공간분포도를 이용해서 적조발생의 잠재력을 지닌 최적지를 결정하였는데, 최적지로서는 여수∼돌산해역, 가막만 북부지역, 남해 일부해역, 나로도해역, 고흥 남부의 일부 연안, 득량만과 인접한 고흥 서부 해역이었다.

추계 대청호 퇴적물 내 인의 지화학적 특성 (Geochemical Properties of Sedimentary Phosphorus of Daechung Lake in Autumn, Korea)

  • 추계 대청호 퇴적물에서 가장 많이 존재하는 인의 형태는 환원환경이 되면 용출될 수 있는 Al-bound와 Fe-bound 인으로 나타났다. 총인, Al-bound와 Fe-bound 인은 가두리 양식장이 분포하였던 회남 지점과 대청댐 앞에서 높게 나타났다. 그 이유는 가두리 양식장 같은 인위적인 활동보다는 세립질 퇴적물의 이동과 연관이 있는 것으로 판단된다. 대청호 퇴적인의 농도는 그 어느 존재형태도 타 인공호수에 비해 높지 않았다. 그러나 보다 더 객관적인 비교를 위해서 존재형태별 연속추출법을 표준화해야 할 것이다.

논에서의 SS 유출 특성 (Characteristics of Suspended Solids Export from Paddy Fields)

  • A five-year field monitoring was conducted to monitor characteristics of suspended solid (SS) export from paddy fields. The observed EMCs of SS ranged 1.2~517 mg/L (avg. 52.1 mg/L) during storm period. The concentration of SS during non-storm period were 1.1~349.5 mg/L (avg. 36.1 mg/L). Monthly load of SS was high during summer when rainfall amount was high. The load was higher than that of May when tillage effect is expected. There was no significant relationship between SS EMCs and rainfall or drainage amount. However, effects of rainfall and drainage were found to be significant for event load of SS. But, there was no apparent relationship between rainfall amount of cropping period and load of SS for that period. The observed SS load was 164.8~456.0 kg/ha (avg. 301.2 kg/ha) and mostly occurred during storm period. This study results also suggested that SS load estimation by USLE equation for paddy field could be overestimated, if not carefully handled. Monitoring studies for various climate, soil, and agricultural management are required to get better scope of SS export from paddy fields.
