  • This study was conducted to investigate the dispersion prediction of odor from swine farms in Korea. Gaussian Plume model used in considering of farm size, wind velocity, atmospheric stability and threshold odor unit to prediction of odor dispersion based on the survey on current state of odor emission and control from 48 site of swine farms. Farm size, wind velocity and atmospheric stability were affected the distance of odor dispersion, showed longer distance in cases of large farm, low wind velocity and stable atmospheric condition. We will suggestion the adjusted distance of odor dispersion according to farm size was estimated to 180 m in small farm and 320 m in large farm when apply the 3 OU, 5 m/s wind velocity and stable atmospheric condition.

  • Comparative studies on the quality of life, a new research specialization, have emerged only in recent years and are experiencing vigorous development in many parts of the world This study is a two year phasing-in project carried out by a jointed research team between Seoul National University and Tokyo University. As the first study of the project series, the aim of the study is to learn how different the quality of life(QOL) between Seoul and Tokyo and how the students of both cities assign the relative weights to parameters of the quality of life in their cities. The study also attempts to illustrate the current state of the art in this new field. Seoul and Tokyo are located very closely bur their physical, socia-economic and cultural aspects are not the same but rather different. Here is our interest and the reason why we started out study. The study is divided into the following two principal parts: (1 ) The survey of the variables influencing the puality of life in Seoul and Tokyo (2) The survey of the attitude of students towards the relative importance of parameter of the quality of life in Seoul and Tokyo. The researches of the variables were carried out utilizing the existing official statistics derived from 1988 Seout Statistical Year Book and 1987 Tokyo Statistical Year Book. Therefore, the choice of indicators was largely limited to data that had been compiled in two yearbooks. The attitude surveys of students were carried out by interview. The questionnaire consists of a face sheet and a question which is designed to produce information on the relative importance of the parameters by the paired comparison method.

  • The objectives of this study are, first to define the concept of restaurant total coordination and establish its components as a design strategy for planning and managing all elements comprising a restaurant, and second, to survey the total coordination of Japanese restaurants in foreign countries and examine how traditionality, which is an element for globalizing Japanese restaurants, is expressed. This study was conducted through literature review for defining the concept of restaurant total coordination and extracting its components and a field survey for analyzing the current state of restaurant total coordination and traditionality expression methods. The results of this study are as follows. First, Japanese restaurants categorized into Type A with relatively high traditionality expression(3.3 or higher) were 25% of the surveyed restaurants. These restaurants showed the traditional characteristics of Japanese style as they are without contemporary adaptation for all components of restaurant. Second, 41.7% of the restaurants were categorized into Type B with traditionality expression between 1.7 and 3.3. They were mostly popular casual restaurants at which people can enjoy Japanese food comfortably. In visual and spatial design elements, traditional and contemporary styles appeared in the equal percentage, and decoration, table setting and food design were styled according to Japanese traditions. Third, 4 cases(33.3%) were categorized into Type C with traditionality expression below 1.7. Because they were fine dining restaurants that sold high priced dishes, formality and consistency were also high. Through all design elements including visual, spatial, table setting and food design elements, elegant and simple contemporary images were dominant. The results of this study will be used as basic materials to establish the concept of total coordination that views the visual, spatial, table setting and food design elements comprising a restaurant, which were approached separately in previous studies on restaurants, together from the viewpoint of integrative deigns, and to make design strategies for globalizing Korean restaurants based on Japanese restaurant cases.

  • This study proposed the design development of performance uniform for Korean classical music. To do this, we considered the state of the performance uniform of the Korean Classical Music Band through photographic data. The research targeted the performers in Korean Classical Music Band, and conducted a survey for the preference of type, pattern, decoration, color and fabric materials. Based on the results, we extracted the design of performance uniform, which is suitable for the environment of Korean classical music performance and meets the substantial requirements of performers. The performance uniform that the current national or public Korean classical music bands are using, has two types: Western clothing and Hanbok. The attire is influenced by the genre of the music that they are playing because one of its main functions is to deliver the music to audience effectively. In addition, there are some differences in the uniform based on the gender, but no division in the design of clothing according to music instruments. However, the result of the survey show that there was no difference in preference by gender, but there was some difference according to the division of music instruments. On this study, we reflected this result in the design, and proposed the design of an convenient outer garment for everyone to wear in the music performance band.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the current status of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education in schools by asking a variety of questions including "why and how often they implement STEAM education." This study conducted an online survey on 11,526 elementary, middle, and high schools in South Korea, with the response rate being 56.8% (N = 6,473). To highlight key findings, first, our descriptive analyses suggested that if those that did not respond to the survey were assumed not to have implemented STEAM education, approximately 27.1% (N = 3,127) of all schools in South Korea were believed to have implemented STEAM at best. The highest rate of implementation of STEAM education was found in elementary schools (30.8%), followed by middle (27.4%) and high (17.5%) schools. Second, in contrast with the result for the rate of implementation of STEAM education, high schools showed the highest level of satisfaction. Third, the most important reason for implementing STEAM education within a school was found to be teachers' voluntary efforts or intrinsic motives, followed by support from the provincial office of education. Fourth, the most important reason for not implementing STEAM education was found to be the lack of consensus among teachers. Together, findings highlight the importance of the role of teachers in implementing STEAM education. Offered are policy implications for the better implementation of STEAM education.
