A Study on the Surge Analysis considering Surge Arrester and Grounding System in the Combined Distribution System (혼합 배전계통에서 피뢰기적용과 접지시스템 변경을 고려한 서지 해석에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes the protective ability of lightning arrestor in combined distribution system with power cable. To evaluate the protective ability, change of arrestor and grounding location are considered. On the other hand, arrestor developed by Cooper Power Systems for underground power cable system, is considered to evaluate surge protective ability as in underground system, when arrestor occurs failure has overhead line. The result shows that lightning arrestor in combined distribution system with power cable protect effectively when failure at arrestor in overhead line. On the other hand, arrestor developed by Cooper Power Systems for underground power cable system, is considered to evaluate surge protective ability in underground distribution system, when arrestor of overhead line has failure. The result shows that lightning arrestor installed in underground cable can effectively protected cables from surge when arrestor of overhead line has failure. And also even though grounding locations are decreased, it is revealed that protective ability is nearly similar.

Experimental Study on the Dynamic Characteristics of Porcelain Surge Arrestor Considering the Variation of Cable's Tension and Arrestor's Stiffness (케이블 장력 및 피뢰기의 강성 변화를 고려한 애자형 피뢰기의 동특성 시험 연구)

  • Porcelain surge arrestor is very vulnerable to earthquake but there is very few information on its dynamic characteristics which are necessary to the seismic design. Therefore, the dynamic characteristics of the porcelain surge arrestor are evaluated considering the variation of its cable tension and stiffness by shaking table test. The test results show that the first natural frequencies are 5.3 Hz and 5.2 Hz in the horizontal x- and y-axis directions, respectively, and higher than 30 Hz in the vertical z-axis direction, respectively. The installation of cable on the surge arrestor reduces the horizontal natural frequencies due to the constraint effect of the cable but cable tension has no effect on the natural frequency. Also, the natural frequency is proportional to the stiffness of the surge arrestor. This test result will be used for the seismic design and seismic capacity assessment of domestic substations and contribute to the stability of the electric power supply under earthquake event.

  • Extension of the mobile communication and the rapidly developing services connected with wireless multimedia(W-CDMA, DMB, Wibro, and so on) need great many base station transceiver systems, antennas, and many signal transmission line to embody these services. The min communication appliances system is exposed always in danger of transient overvoltage by direct stroke or induced lightning surge flowing in through antenna because the antenna of base station transceiver system or relay equipment is combined with expensive communication network equipments through signal transmission line. Now, gas discharge tube(GDT) or narrow band stub arrestor which is used by the surge protector for communication use is exposing limitations as for lightning surge protective means of the communication facility with high speed and wide frequency band. Therefore, for improving performance of surge arrestor, we applied ceramic filter which can reduce lightning surge invading from antenna effectively, and proved that ceramic filter is effective in residual voltage reduction through the experimental research.

  • The lightning with high voltage and current can enter the basestations for mobile communication through their antenna. The device which can protect the basestation against the lightning, is surge arrestor. In this paper, the concept, kind, operating mechanism, design and fabrication of surge arrestor were studied. Based on the studied data, variable surge arrestors were designed for the current mobile communication service like a cellular, GSM and PCS and the next generation mobile communication like a IMT-2000. Computer simulation for the prediction of their characteristics and inner structure optimization for the improvement of their electrical characteristics were carried with high frequency 3D structure simulator. Quarter wave short stub surge arrestors for IMT-2000 were fabricated with their final design and then the measurement of electrical characteristics and the lightning test were executed. As a results of measurement, we obtained below 1.05 of VSWR, -0.035 dB of insertion loss, -150 dBc of intermodulation and 7∼ll V of residual voltage.

  • This paper describes the analysis results for the protection of lightning surge at 154 kV substation. We found that the surge arrester is needed at the inlet structure. The maximum overvoltage is about 1,500 kV at the circuit breaker without the surge arrester at the inlet structure. This value can be lower than 600 kV by installing the surge arrestor at the inlet structure. In addition to the incoming surge from transmission line, the shield wire should be considered to prevent the shielding failure by the direct lightning stroke.

  • Surge arrestor is used for protection of facilities and lines. Recently lots of arresters fatted prematurely In the distribution lines. It is important to know that what the cause of the failures is. This paper presents characteristics of the aged and new 18kV surge arrester. In order to analyse characteristics, we measured leakage current using specialty made leakage current measurement system and also investigated Tan $\delta$ of the arrester and microstructure of the elements. Through the investigation we found that the characteristics among the ZnO elements in an arrester were a little different, It means that the surge arreste can have non-uniform electric field due to the characteristic difference of The each element. Owing to this concentration of the electric field, the localized aging might be proceeded.

  • This paper preserts the characteristics of leakage currents flowing through 18 kV zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arrester under the mixed DC and AC voltages. The I-V curves of ZnO surge arrester were measured as a function of the voltage ratio K The I-V curves under the mixed DC and AC voltages lay between the pure DC and AC characteristics, and the cross-over phenomenon in I-V curves was observed at the low current region As a result, the increase of DC component to mixed voltages causes the increase of resistive component of total leakage current th ZnO surge arrester.

  • The ZnO surge arrester is the protective device for limiting surge voltages on equipment by diverting surge current and returning the device to its original status. The occurrence of overvoltage appears in any phase to AC power supply system and it appears in mixing AC and impulse voltages, moreover because HVDC power supply system uses converter in semiconductor, it makes mixed DC and high harmonics voltages. In this study, the various mixed AC and DC voltages was made for investigating the degradation effect of ZnO arrester according to mixed voltage. As a result, the increase of DC component to mixed voltages causes the increase of resistive component of total leakage current to ZnO block. In changing V-I curve for mixed voltages, the cross-over point acts a factor as making the proper capacitor size of an equivalent circuit for ZnO block.

  • Recently KS documents related to lightning protection were revised complying with the requirements of IEC standards. Lightning protection parts are divided three in IEC, those are arrestor(60099), SPD(61643), and protection facilities(62305). According as international standard is applicable in Korea, type tests, routine tests, and acceptance tests shall be made to demonstrate compliance with the relevant standards. KESRI have installed test equipment which is funded by Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy fit for lightning surge test form 2002, and we introduce the test equipments in detail.
