  • This paper presents a new vector control algorithm of the surface mounted permanent magnet motor (SMPMM) without any rotational tranceducer. Originally, SMPMM does not have any magnetic saliency in structure, but it has a little magnetic saliency due to the saturation by the flux of the permanent magnet. Moreover, it varies according to the load conditions and the control performance of schematics using the saliency can be easily degraded. To prevent it and to improve the performance of the proposed algorithm, the saliency of a SMPMM under various load conditions is analyzed. In the proposed algorithm, the saliency or the impedance difference related to the saliency is utilized in order to estimate the position and speed of the rotor. And the high frequency signal is injected into the motor to measure the impedance difference and also to enhance the control performance of the system. The experimental results verify the performance of the proposed sensorless algorithm.

  • This paper is deal with the method of design for the optimum model using genetic algorithms in slotted Permanent Magnet Linear Synchrous Motor (PMLSM). The objective functions are maximum thrust and minimum detent force. Characteristic analysis method is used 2D space harmonic analysis method. Design parameters are PM width, PM height and slot width.

  • This paper presents a servo control scheme for the surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor(SPMSM) which essentially uses vector control algorithm. The control system is composed of the PI controller for speed control and the current controller using space voltage vector PWM technique. The high-speed calculation and processing for vector control is carried out by TMS320C31 digital signal processor and IGBT module. The proposed scheme is verified through digital simulations and experiments for 2.2kW SPMSM and shows good dynamic performance.

  • This paper presents the comparison study of permanent magnet (PM) eddy current of concentrated winding type surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) with different rare-earth magnet shapes. The fractional slot winding having 10 poles and 12 slots is studied. The PM eddy current is analyzed to compare for each shape by 2 dimensional (2D) finite element analysis (FEA). The eddy current and their loss of particular position of PM as well as their distributions are displayed for each model. The effect of partly enlarged air-gap made by PM shape to PM eddy current is compared.

  • Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) have many advantages such as high power density, wide speed range and so on. With the IPMSM, miniaturization and energy efficient design can be achieved in comparison with Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(SPMSM). In order to secure miniaturization and manufacturing efficiency of the motor, it has concentrated winding, because concentrated winding can reduce the motor volume and make manufacturing to be simple compared with the distributed winding. However, according to the pole-slot combinations motor parameters can be changed and unexpected normal force can be generated. Especially, unbalanced normal force in airgap can cause serious vibration and acoustic problem. Accordingly, in this paper, normal force and parameters variation of concentrated winding IPMSM are investigated according to the pole-slot combinations.

  • This paper proposes a new fuzzy speed controller to precisely regulate the speed of a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor(SPMSM). The proposed fuzzy controller needs the knowledge of the load torque to realize its robust and accurate control, thus the first-order load torque observer is adopted to estimate it. It is analytically confirmed that the overall control system containing the fuzzy speed controller and the load torque observer is exponentially stable. To prove the validity of the proposed fuzzy speed controller, the simulation and experimental results are shown. It is concluded that the proposed control scheme can be employed to accurately control the speed of a SPMSM motor.

  • This paper is intended to improve efficiency of two-phase BLDC motor using analytical and statistical methods, and then the stability of the starting for the designed model is investigated. The characteristics of the motor according to magnetization directions of permanent magnet are analyzed through the analytical method, and design variables that affect the efficiency are selected. Preliminary optimal design is performed using the analytical method with the design variable. The RSM (Response Surface Method) based on the FEA (Finite Element Analysis) is applied to complement errors of the analytical method. As a result, the optimal design is determined. Finally, the stability of the starting for the optimal designed model is evaluated by analyzing cogging torque, and it is verified through the FEA.

  • The performance design and analysis of an electric motor for vehicles is very complicated due to the variety of parameters. This paper presents the design of the BLDC motor for electric air compressor in high voltage(42V) system and compares with the characteristics of IPM, SPM type BLDC motor. Futher, optimal design for the electric motor has been carried out using Equivalent Magnetic Circuit and FEM Modelling. By analyzing the design results, it is found that design parameters for BLDC motor provided an useful tool for vehicles motor design.

  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications.   • This paper deals with the design process for an outer-rotor-type surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) used in continuous variable valve timing (CVVT) systems in automobiles with internal combustion engines. When the same size, outer-rotor-type SPMSMs generate larger torque and more stable than inner-rotor-type SPMSMs. For the initial design, space harmonic analysis (SHA) is used. In order to minimize the cogging torque, an optimization was conducted using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). At the end of the paper, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is performed to verify the performance of the optimum model.
