The phenomenon of decrease in sizing efficiency when the stock temperature is increased is well recognized as summer sizing, and this is believed to be caused by uneven distribution of sizing agents on paper surface most often incurred by coagulation of sizing agents. When unevenly sized paper is used as coating base stock, nonuniform consolidation of the coating layer may result, which, in turn, causes uneven distribution of binder on coating surface. This causes nonuniform ink absorption to produce print mottle. In this study the effects of simple or polymeric electrolytes, storage temperature and time on the coagulation of cationic dispersed rosin size were investigated using a turbidity measurement method which was verified to correlate well with the particle size of rosin emulsion or its coagulates. Handsheets sized with rosin dispersions coagulated under various conditions were prepared and their sizing degree and coated paper properties including gloss and ink density were examined. The relationship between the sizing nonuniformity of coated papers and its ink absorption property was evaluated. Turbidity of rosin emulsion increased as the storage temperature and time were increased. Addition of simple or polymeric electrolytes caused reduction in $zeta$ -potential of the rosin dispersion and accelerated the coagulation tendency substantially. Reversion of the $zeta$ -potential of rosin dispersion, however, did not occur when coagulation was induced with simple electrolytes. On the other hand, addition of an anionic polyelectrolyte reversed the $zeta$ -potential of the flocculated rosin dispersion. This indicated that electrical double layer compaction and bridging flocculation were coagulation mechanisms for simple and polymeric electrolytes, respectively. Sizing degree decreased as coagulation of rosin was increased. Paper gloss, ink gloss and ink density were increased when sizing degree of base stock was increased most probably due to prevention of base paper swelling and increased binder migration to coating surface. This suggested that uneven printing ink density occurred when uneven sizing development was induced by coagulation of rosin particles.
We investigated the effects of the enzyme treatment of fiber for printability of coated paper. The results could summarized as follows, 1. The samples with enzyme treatment (average 87.8%) have higher ink gloss than the blank (85.6%). Printed density showed same trends with the ink gloss. However, the ${\beta}$-Glucosidase treated sample showed the lowest printed density (2.14 %) due to the lowest thickness of the ink layer, which is influenced by coated weight and surface smoothness. 2. The samples whose base paper was Xylanase and ${\beta}$-Glucosidase treated showed higher surface strength (4.2% and 4.0%, respectively) than the blank while the samples with the Hernicellulase and ${\beta}$-Glucuronidase treatment showed lower surface strength (3.2%and 3.7%, respectively) due to the influence of air permeability. 3. Hemicellulase and ${\beta}$-Glucuronidase treated base paper, which have relatively low air permeability, showed better ink repellence (4.3 and 4.4 %, respectively) than the blank (3.8 %). 4. The blank and the Xylanase treated base paper showed high set-off, which is the last category of printability.
Polycarbonate has a high transmittance to light, low specific gravity, flexibility and cost-effectiveness that extends the application field of the polymer to bio-engineering, optics, electronic parts, etc. Moreover, electro plating of metallic film on PC could endow the parts the electromagnetic interference shielding capability. However, poor adhesion of copper on PC limited the wide usage in the industry. In this work, a composite(PC/ABS) and MmSH(Momentary mold Surface Heating) injection process were used to improve the plating characteristics; plating thickness, gloss and adhesion. Also plasma treatment and chemical treatment were employed for improving adhesion. Plating characteristics on PC/ABS were better than those on PC due to the anchoring effect of butadiene. MmSH injection process could ameliorate the gloss and coating adhesion. Also plating thickness and adhesion of PC and PC/ABS were increased by plasma treatment.
The characteristics of printing inks are affected, to a greater or lesser extent, by the size and distribution of the pigment particles in the dispersion. Color strength, transparency and gloss increase with a decrease in particle size of pigments and with an increase in surface area of pigments. On the contrary, opacity and lightfastness tend to increases with an increase in particle size of pigments and with a decrease in surface are and particle size if pigments on the physical properties of printing ink which made up vehicles for sheet fed and organic pigment Lake Red C(C.I Pigment Red 53:1) that different surface area and particle size.

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to derive and compare the inherent color (hue angle, chroma), translucency ($TP_{SCI}$), surface gloss (${\Delta}E^*_{SCE-SCI}$), and surface roughness ($R_a$) amongst selected shades and brands of three hybrid CAD/CAM blocks [GC Cerasmart (CS); Lava Ultimate (LU); Vita Enamic (VE)]. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The specimens (N = 225) were prepared into square-shaped ($12{\times}12mm^2$) with different thicknesses and shades. The measurements of color, translucency, and surface gloss were performed by a reflection spectrophotometer. The surface roughness and surface topography were assessed by white light interferometry. RESULTS. Results revealed that hue and chroma values were influenced by the material type, material shade, and material thickness (P < .001). The order of hue angle amongst the materials was LU > CS > VE, whereas the order of chroma was VE > CS > LU. $TP_{SCI}$ results demonstrated a significant difference in terms of material types and material thicknesses ($P{\leq}.001$). $TP_{SCI}$ values of the tested materials were ordered as LU > CS > VE. ${\Delta}E^*_{SCE-SCI}$ and $R_a$ results were significantly varied amongst the materials (P < .001) and amongst the shades (P < .05). The order of ${\Delta}E^*_{SCE-SCI}$ amongst the materials were as follows $LU>VE{\geq}CS$, whereas the order of $R_a$ was $CS{\geq}VE>LU$. CONCLUSION. Nano-ceramic and polymer-infiltrated-feldspathic ceramic-network CAD/CAM materials exhibited different optical, inherent color and surface parameters.
Recently the use of web offset printing has been increasing, which can provide high print speed, mass production, and high print quality. However, high speed web offset printing has frequently undergone a blistering problem when the printed paper passes through hot air dryers. Blistering occurs in the middle of the base paper or in the coating layer. This paper focused on the blistering occurring in the base paper. In order to elucidate the effect of pigment ratio on blistering, 6 types of coating color were prepared with varying GCC/clay ratios and printability and blistering were investigated focusing on structure changes in the coating layer. When the clay content in the coating layer was increased, surface roughness and surface strength were decreased and paper gloss was increased. In addition, it was found that the coating layer structure with high clay content, which contains lots of discontinuous pores, hindered water vapors to penetrate out and, as a result, blistering occurred.
To meet the ever increasing quality demand of coated papers and duplex boards, the local gloss variation and print unevenness must be avoid. To do this, surface roughening phenomenon which affects local gloss and print unevenness was investigated. In this study, the effect of roughness and densification of sheet obtained at various calendering conditions on surface roughening was examined. To evaluate the calendering effect properly we introduced a new value of roughening index by moisture for evaluation of surface roughening. Caliper and roughness of sheet decreased with increasing of calendering temperature and pressure, and the remarkable reduction of those properties occurred at the temperature around Tg. Roughening index increased when the amount of water increased and calendaring temperature and pressure increased. And as the sheet became denser by calendering, the roughening index increased to some extent. But roughening index by moisture is the lowest for sheet precalendered at higher temperature condition. When the surface of calendered sheet is rougher, there is more roughening of surface. The severe condition of calendering made the roughening index by moisture small.
