  • In the process of car body design, various surfaces are generated from the given boundary curves. Depending upon the method of the surface generation and the quality of the boundary curves provided, the resulting surfaces may have global or local irregularities in many cases. Thus it would be necessary for the designer to evaluate the surface quality and to modify the surface or to use the different generation method based on the evaluation results. This capability is very important because the defect of the surface quality detected in the production stage will require the rework of the dies and will cause a big loss in cost and time. A method of surface interrogation using reflection line is introduced. In this paper, We applied reflection mapping to generate reflection lines on the trimmed NURBS surface. Since reflection lines are obtained from reflection mapping that uses simple and physically acceptable mapping algorithm, they can be efficiently used to simulate the reflection test on the real part in the production line.

  • A silent type ozone generator using water surface has been studied and improved its ozone generation characteristics by the controlling the height of Taylor cone by installing a mesh electrode, a dielectric bed of glass beads in the just under th surface of the water. The current-voltage characteristics and characteristics of ozone generation quantity of the test system were investigated and discharge current oscillograms of the each cases of the mesh electrode and the beds were observed and compared each other to analyze the discharge conditions. The Taylor cone height could be the cause of the discharge bridge to decrease the ozone generation on the discharge spacing. In this study, the hight of Taylor cone could be reduced greatly by installing the mesh and the glass beads bed just under the water surface. Therefore a higher ozone generation also could be obtained.

  • Time dependent ozone generation characteristics of some oxide layers grown by ozone on the surface of corona discharge wires have been investigated experimentally in air ambience. Four wires of stainless steel, iron, silver and copper were used for the corona discharge wire of an ozone generator. And the effect of the metal oxide layers on ozone generation was studied and the contamination morphology of each layers was characterized. With the SEM images and the EDS spectra, it was found that all the surface of the corona wire were oxidized by the generated ozone and contaminated by airborne particles through the gradient force. As a result, the morphology and the electrical property of metal oxide layer grown on corona wire surface influenced on ozone generation characteristics i.e. discharge mechanisms.

  • This paper presents a fast 3D mesh generation method using a surface based method with a stitching algorithm. This method uses the surface based method since the volume based method that uses 3D Delaunay triangulation can hardly deal with a large scale of scanned points. To reduce the processing time, this method also uses a stitching algorithm: after dividing the whole point data into several sections and performing mesh generation on individual sections, the meshes from several sections are stitched into one mesh. Stitching method prevents the surface based method from increasing the processing time exponentially as the number of the points increases. This method works well with different types of scanned points: a scattered type points from a conventional 3D scanner and a cross-sectional type from CT or MRI.

  • In this paper, the CL surface transformation approach that inversely deforms the 3-axis tool path generated on the deformed CL surface to a 5-axis tool path is introduced. The proposed CL surface transformation approach can be used if the orientation of the cutter is predefined. The CL surface based 3-axis tool path generation algorithms that have been improved well can be applied to the f-axis tool path generation.

  • This is describes the automatic mesh generation on the ship hull surface. At first ship hull is defined as a cillocation of composite surface patches which satisfy the geometic continuity between adjoining patches by using Gregory surface method. Node points that would be mesh points are ganerated by considering the surface curvature. The triangulation of the node points is by the combination of Ohtsubo's method and Choi's one. After triangulation, shape improvement and quadrilateralization is done with specific criterin. An application to the actual ship and the results are shown.

  • This paper describes the generation of chordal surface for various shell structures, such as automobile bodies, plastic injection mold components and shell metal parts. After one-layered tetrahedral mesh is generated by an advancing front algorithm, the chordal surface is generated by cutting a tetrahedral element. It is generated one or two elements at a tetrahedral element and the chordal surface is composed with triangular or quadrilateral elements. This algorithm has been tested on several models with rib structure.

  • In this work, a general method for the mathematical description of three-dimensional trimmed surface is proposed by introducing the base parametric surface and boundary curves. Since mesh density distribution for the analysis may vary by cases, a grid-based mesh generation algorithm using quadtree is proposed in the present work. For the assurance of connectivity of generated meshes among surfaces, a method for the pre-cleaning of boundary curves has been developed to be used in the automatic generation of the finite elements. In addition, mesh-smoothing algorithm is suggested which can be used in the general trimmed surface. In this algorithm nodes are moved on the original surface by the normal projection in each iterative smoothing procedure.

  • Surfaces of many engineering structures, especially, those of ships are commonly made out of either single- or double-curved surfaces to meet functional requirements. The first step in the fabrication process of a three-dimensional design surface is unfolding or flattening the surface, otherwise known as planar development, so that manufacturers can determine the initial flat plate which is required to form the design shape. In this paper, an algorithm for optimal approximated development of a general curved surface, including both single- and double-curved surfaces, is established by minimizing the strain energy of deformation from its planar development to the design surface. The unfolding process is formulated into a constrained nonlinear programming problem, based on the deformation theory and finite element. Constraints are subjected to the characteristics of the fabrication method. And the design surface, or the curved shell plate is subdivided by automatic mesh generation.

  • In this paper grid generation of unstructured quadrilateral surface grids is described. The current approach uses conventional Advancing Front Method which is used to generate unstructured triangular grids. Grid cell size control is done by using closeness-based global interpolation method controlled by pre-described control elements. Algorithm and procedure for quadrilateral grid generation using AFM method and cell size control method are described. Examples of quadrilateral grid generation are shown, and difficulties and problems related to the current approach are also discussed.
