  • This study investigated a utilization technology of light burned dolomite. light burned dolomite ($CaMg(CO_3)_2$) generated in furnace (steel manufacturer) is an alternative to quick lime. Using light burned dolomite has an effect on reducing the consumption of fluorite slag MgO concentration in supersaturated solution by prolonging the life of softening effect. Armophous MgO, not containing periclase is formed by firing dolomite under $800^{\circ}C$. It has larger surface area and higher reactivity than periclase, and also shows better expansion effect than quicklime. Due to those effects, therefore, armophous MgO produced from light burned dolomite is used as an alternative expansion agent in mortar. In the experiment, characteristics of light burned dolomite were compared to those of existing expansion agents such as anhydrite and quicklime. Then, each expansion and shrinkage rates were measured over a period of about 3 months in both of 1m Jis mold at labscale and apartment mortar flooring at field scale. In the result, it was observed that light burned dolomite in mortar flooring more compensates for the expansion and shrinkage rates than the existing expansion agents, showing low expansion rate of below 0.05% and also decreases the crack.

  • Micropiles are cast-in-place piles with small diameters. The advantage of micropile is low construction expense and simple procedures, so it is widely applied to existing buildings and structures for the reinforcement of foundation and seismic performances. The base expansion structure has been developed following the original mechanism of horizontal expansion steps under compressive loading. This kind of structure can be installed at the pile end to improve the bearing capacity by tip area enlargement and horizontal force increment to the pile surface area. However, 'Micropile with base expansion structure' cannot be put into practical use, because detailed verification for the developed technique has not been conducted so far. In this research, 3-D numerical analysis was conducted to figure out the bearing mechanism of base expansion micropile and to verify the bearing capacity improvement compared to the general micropiles. 3-D modelling of micropile with base expansion structure was carried out and input parameter was determined. Bearing mechanism induced by base expansion structure was analyzed by lab-scale modelling, and bearing capacity improvement was verified by field-scale analysis.

  • Due to distinct properties of plastic substrates such as poor thermal resistance, non-rigidness and high thermal expansion, it is difficult to fabricate plastic film LCDs by conventional LCD processes. Poor thermal resistance and high thermal expansion of substrates induced deformation of substrates surface, mismatch of thermal expansion between ITO electrodes and substrates resulted in defects in the ITO electrodes during the high temperature process. Defects of ITO electrodes and non-uniform cell gap caused by non-rigid and flexible properties were also observed in the pressuring process. Based on in these observations, we used a newly developed material and fabrication process to prevent deformation of substrates, defects of electrodes and to maintain uniform cell gap. The maximum temperature of the process is limited up to $110^{\circ}C$ and pressure loaded during the process is five times less than conventional one. With these invented processes and materials, we obtained highly reliable Plastic Film STN LCDs whose electro-optical characteristics are better than or equivalent to those of typical glass LCDs.

  • The guided wave technique is commonly used in structural health monitoring as the guided waves can propagate far in the structures without much energy loss. The guided waves are conventionally generated by the surface-mounted piezoelectric wafer active sensor (PWAS). However, there is still lack of understanding of the wave propagation in layered structures, especially in structures made of anisotropic materials such as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. In this paper, the Rayleigh-Lamb wave strain tuning curves in a PWAS-mounted unidirectional CFRP plate are analytically derived using the normal mode expansion (NME) method. The excitation frequency spectrum is then multiplied by the tuning curves to calculate the frequency response spectrum. The corresponding time domain responses are obtained through the inverse Fourier transform. The theoretical calculations are validated through finite element analysis and an experimental study. The PWAS responses under the free, debonded and bonded CFRP conditions are investigated and compared. The results demonstrate that the amplitude and travelling time of wave packet can be used to evaluate the CFRP bonding conditions. The method can work on a baseline-free manner.

  • The cold expansion method (CEM) is one of the widely used a method to improve the fatigue behavior of materials in aerospace industry. Such improvement is due to the compressive residual stress developed when a tapered mandrel goes through the fastener holes a little smaller than the mandrel. CEM is retarded of crack initiation due to the compressive residual stress developed on the hole surface. Many researchers are studied a finite element analysis of residual stress around fastener hole. But in case of real model, fastener hole has a clamping force after CE. Therefore, it is respected that residual stress distributions should be changed due to clamping forces. In this paper, it was performed finite element analysis of residual stress by clamping force after CE in the plate having adjacent holes. From this study, it has been found that compressive residual stress near the hole increases according to clamping force. Also, the more increase clamping force, the more increases compressive residual stress. However, tensile residual stress increase beyond clamping force area.

  • This study was carried out to observe the character change of expanded rice grain for Salyeotgangjung at various gelatinization methods. The expansion and structure change of rice grain was different at conditions of heating methods and gelatinization, respectively. The boiling showed good expansion compared to other heating methods by electric rice-cooker, pressure cooker, and steam cooker. There was not difference in expansion of rice grain between the boiling and the boiling after soaking. Rice grain did greatly expand as the boiling time was extended. But the quality for Salyeotgangjung would be not good because of crack of expanded rice grain surface when the boiling time was too long.

  • In this study, we report significant improvements in lithium-ion battery anodes cost and performance, by fabricating nano porous silicon (Si) particles from Si wafer sludge using the metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) process. To solve the problem of volume expansion of Si during alloying/de-alloying with lithium ions, a layer was formed through nitric acid treatment, and Ag particles were removed at the same time. This layer acts as a core-shell structure that suppresses Si volume expansion. Additionally, the specific surface area of Si increased by controlling the etching time, which corresponds to the volume expansion of Si, showing a synergistic effect with the core-shell. This development not only contributes to the development of high-capacity anode materials, but also highlights the possibility of reducing manufacturing costs by utilizing waste Si wafer sludge. In addition, this method enhances the capacity retention rate of lithium-ion batteries by up to 38 %, marking a significant step forward in performance improvements.

  • The surface of SiC particles were partially oxidized to produce SiO2 layers on the SiC particles to prepare Al2O3/SiC composite by formation of mullite bonds between the grains of Al2O3 and SiC during sintering at 1$600^{\circ}C$. This process is considered to enable the sintering of Al2O3/SiC composite at lower temperature and also to relieve the stress, produced by thermal expansion mismatch between Al2O3 and SiC. In fact, Al2O3/SiC composite prepared by oxidation of SiC was observed to be more effectively sintered and densified at lower temperature. Maximum density, flexural strength and microhardness were obtained with 5.65 vol% of mullite content in Al2O3/SiC composite.

  • Wool fabric was treated with oxygen low-temperature plasma (LTP) and dichloroisocyanuric acid. The effect of dimensional stability (relaxation shrinkage, hygral expansion, felting shrinkage), tensile strength and elongation, crease recovery, and hand of wool fabric between LTP, DCCA treated wool fabrics and control wool fabric were investigated. SEM photograph showed that a little micro crack was formed on the fiber surface by plasma treatment with hard condition and epicuticle scale was damaged by DCCA treatment. Felting shrinkage, tensile strength and total hand value were much different in each samples.

  • This paper established the analytical model of sea surface oscilation of simple type fishing port with vertical wave absorbor. This model is composed by MAEM(Matched Asymptotic Expansion Method) for wave amplification in fishing port and EEM(Eigen - function Expansion Method) for wave absorbing characteristics against vertical perforated plates. Dimensionless porosity by adopting Darcy's law was introduced to evaluate wave absorbing characteristics of the perforated structure. Using the model, the efficiency of the vertical perforated plates was studied for fishing port tranqulity with number of plates, array method and plate intervals. Optimal design and arrangement of perforated plates can be applied to develop multipurpose fishing ports and villages.
