  • In this study, the progressive inelastic deformation, so called, thermal ratchet phenomenon which can occur in high temperature liquid metal reactor was simulated with thermal ratchet structural test facility and 316L stainless steel test cylinder. The inelastic deformation of the reactor baffle cylinder can occur due to the moving temperature distribution along the axial direction as the hot free surface moves up and down under the cyclic heat-up and cool-down of reactor operations. The ratchet deformations were measured with the laser displacement sensor and LVDTs after cooling the structural specimen which experiences thermal load up to $550^{\circ}$ and the temperature differences of about $500^{\circ}C$. During structural thermal ratchet test, the temperature distribution of the test cylinder along the axial direction was measured from 28 channels of thermocouples and the temperatures were used for the ratchet analysis. The thermal ratchet deformation analysis was performed with the NONSTA code whose constitutive model is nonlinear combined kinematic and isotropic hardening model and the test results were compared with those of the analysis. Thermal ratchet test was carried out with respect to 9 cycles of thermal loading and the maximum residual displacements were measured to be 1.8mm. It was shown that thermal ratchet load can cause a progressive deformation to the reactor structure. The analysis results with the combined hardening model were in reasonable agreement with those of the tests.

  • In order to simulate the crack connection between cords and the interply crack growth in the belt-layer of real tire, 2 ply rubber/cord laminate specimens with exposed edges were tested in 4~11mm displacement control. Measurement of the crack connection is evaluated when crack reaches the half of the length between 45$^{\circ}$ aligned cords, and the amount of the crack growth is measured by the steel probe method. 2 dimensional analytic modeling was performed to simulate the crack connection between cords at the exposed edges. Also, the theoretical life of the specimens was calculated from the crack connection life between cords(critical value) and from the critical value to the final failure by the use of Tearing energy(T); the strain energy release per unit area of one fracture surface of a crack. Then, theoretical life was compared with those of experiments. The life prediction up to the critical value has about 20% error compared to experimental life, and up to the final failure about 65% error. Therefore, total theoretical life has about 45% error compared to the experimental life, which is conceivable in the case of rubber.

  • The fatigue crack growth model is derived and the retardation model is proposed. The fatigue crack growth model considers the residual plastic stretch on the crack surface which results from the plastic deformation at the tip of fatigue crack. The fatigue crack growth rate is calculated by using the cumulative fatigue damage and plastic strain energy in the material elements at the crack tip. This model gives the crack growth rate in reasonable agreement with test data for aluminum alloy AL6061-T651 and 17-4PH casting steel. The fatigue crack growth retardation model is based on the residual plastic stretch produced from a tensile overload which reduced the plastic strain range of the following load cycles. A strip-yield model of a crack tip plasticity is used for the calculation of a plastic zone size. The proposed retardation model characterized the observed features and delayed retardation of the fatigue crack growth under tensile overload.

  • In this study, formability and springback behavior of 1.5 GPa grade ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) sheet were predicted through the finite element simulation, and structural stability of the forming dies was verified by the coupled forming-structural analysis. Uniaxial tension and uniaxial tension-compression tests were performed to obtain experimental data for modeling the springback properties of the sheet material. The springback values predicted by simulation were compared with those from actual measurements. The results calculated from the kinematic hardening model were found to be much more accurate than those from the isotropic hardening model. Deformation of the forming die and springback of the product were calculated by the coupled forming-structural analysis. The higher the strength of the die material, the smaller the surface displacement of the die and the springback of the product. The internal stresses of the dies made of three materials, FC300, FCD550 and STD11 were compared with the yield stress of each material. The results provided a basis for determining the most suitable material for each part of the die set. As a result, simulation techniques have been established for predicting formability and springback in the UHSS sheet forming process.

기존의 SOP(Small Out-line Package), QFP(Quad Flat Package) 등은 소형화, 다핀화, 고속화, 실장성에 한계가 있기 때문에, SMT(Surface Mount Technology) 형식으로 된 BGA(Ball Grid Array)가 휴대형 전화를 비롯한 기타 전자 부품 실장에 널리 사용되고 있다.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure displacements that occurs on a surface and interior of slope model and the shape when the slope is destroyed at vibration experiment of the slope model using close range photogrammetry. The circle targets and sphere targets are installed on a chamber and a slope model, while the earthquake wave are applied in regular time interval. The close range photogrammetric images are acquired in each displacements step until the slope model is destroyed. Those photos are processed by image processing method and the center points of targets are automatically extracted. Furthermore, the three-dimensional coordinates of targets are calculated by image orientation and bundle adjustment processing. As a result, amount of displacement at each level is precisely measured and provided the basic information for assessing the slope stability using three-dimensional measurement of the target movement and slope destruction.

  • Electric machines such as motors which have rmving parts are designed for producing mechanical force or torque. The accurate calculations of electromagnetic force and torque are important in the design these machines. Electromagnetic force calculation method using the results of Finite Element Method(FEM) has been presented variously in 2-D problems. Typically the Maxwell's Stress Tensor method and the method of virtual work are used. The former calculates forces by integrating the surface force densities which can be expressed in terms of Maxwell Stress Tensor(MST), and the latter by differentiating the electromagnetic energy with respect to the virtual dis¬placement of rigid bodies of interest. In the problems including current source, magnetic vector potentials(MVP) have rmstly been used as unknown variables for field analysis by a numerical method; e. g. FEM. This paper, thus, introduces the two both methods using MVP in 3-D case. To verify the usefulness of presented methods, a solenoid model is chosen and analyzed by 3-D and axisymmetric FEM. It is found that the force calculation results are in good agreement for several mesh schemes.

  • There have been many studies on the two dimensional thermo-elasto-plastic analysis in welding process, mostly from viewpoint of residual stresses. In this study, the temperature distribution, transient thermal stress, and angular distortion during bead-on-plate gas metal arc welding of rectangular plates were analyzed by using the finite element method. A nonlinear heat transfer analysis was first performed by taking account of the temperature-dependent material properties and convection heat losses on the surface. This was followed by a thermo-elasto-plastic stresses and distortion analysis that incorporates the constrained boundary condition of the two dimensional solution domain to get the three dimensional size effect of the plate. The constrained boundary conditions adopted in this study were the constant displacement condition over the whole two dimensional section for axial movement in the welding direction, and the force boundary condition for rotational movementof the domain around the axis of the welding direction. It could be revealed that the theoretical predictions of the angular distortion have an improved agreement with the experimentally obtained data presented in the previous study.

  • This study presents a combined experimental and numerical effort to investigate wave breaking of sinusoidal waves in a surf zone. Numerical predictions are verified by comparing to laboratory measurements. The model solves the Reynolds equations and$textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ models for the turbulence analysis. To track the free surface displacement, the volume of fluid method is employed. As the height of incident wave increases, the wave breaking occurs at a closer point of the slope in the numerical model and laboratory experiments with the same depth and period. When a wave breaking occurs, the ratio of wave height becomes larger, with the same wave height and depth, as the period increases.

  • Despite significant effects on macroscopic migration and distribution of CO2 injected during geological sequestration, only limited information is available on wettability in microscopic scCO2-brine-mineral systems due to difficulties in pore-scale observation. In this study, a micromodel had been developed to improve our understanding of how scCO2 flooding and residual characteristics of porewater are affected by the wettability in scCO2-water-glass bead systems. The micromodel (a transparent pore structure made of glass beads and glass plates) in a pressurized chamber provided the opportunity to visualize scCO2 spreading and porewater displacement. CO2 flooding followed by fingering migration and dewatering followed by formation of residual water were observed through an imaging system. Measurement of contact angles of residual porewater in micromodels were conducted to estimate wettability in a scCO2-water-glass bead system. The measurement revealed that the brine-3M NaCl solution-is a wetting fluid and the surface of glass beads is water-wet. It is also found that the contact angle at equilibrium decreases as the pressure decreases, whereas it increases as the salinity increases. Such changes in wettability may significantly affect the patterns of scCO2 migration and porewater residence during the process of CO2 injection into a saline aquifer at high pressures.
