The necessity of disinfecting playground soil is an important issue, because pathogenic protozoa, bacteria, and parasite eggs remain viable for several months and can infect children. UV irradiation has been used to decontaminate water but its effectiveness on soil is unclear. We determined the efficacy of UV radiation for inactivation of an indicator bacteria, E. coli (strain ATCC 8739), on playground soil. While 99% inactivation of E. coli in the soil was readily achieved by UV radiation within 55 min at $0.4\;mW\;cm^{-2}$, complete inactivation was not achieved, even after prolonged treatment at $4\;mW\;cm^{-2}$. This was attributed to the irregular surface of the soil. A small number of E. coli escaped the UV radiation because they were situated in indentations or under small particles on the soil surface. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that the surface characteristics of the soil is the major limiting factor in the inactivation of E. coli by UV radiation. Thus UV treatment may not be adequate for disinfecting some soils and should be carefully evaluated before being used on playground soils.
In July 2000, a bacteria infection on film cassette contact surface was examined at the diagnostic radiology department of the S. hospital. The objective of this study was to assess the contamination level on film cassette contact surface as a predictor of patient to prevent from nosocomial infection. The study showed that the laboratory result was identified non-pathologic bacterial in the four different cassette size of the contact surface. The study concludes that presence of a bacterial infection wilt prevent a using antiseptic technique on film cassette contact surface. Also the education of nosocomial infection for radiographer will be required.
This paper presents the results of using cold plasma to treat surface water for domestic use purpose. Experimental results showed that cold plasma was an effective method for destroying bacteria in water. After treatment with cold plasma, concentration of coliform and Escherichia coli dramatically reduced. Besides, cold plasma significantly removed water odor, increased dissolved oxygen and decreased the concentration of chemical oxygen demand. However, cold plasma significantly raised the concentration of nitrite and nitrate. Other disadvantages of treating with cold plasma were conductivity increase and pH reduction. Pretreatment steps of coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and sand filtration followed by disinfection with cold plasma exhibited a high efficiency in surface water treatment. All parameters of surface water after treatment by using the prototype satisfied with the allowance standard of domestic water quality.
The main objectives of root canal therapy are cleaning and shaping and then obturating the root canal system in 3 dimensions to prevent reinfection. Many instrumentation techniques and devices, supported by an irrigation system capable of removing pulp tissue remnants and dentin debris, have been proposed to shape root canals. But current regimens in chemomechanical debridement using instrumentation and irrigation with NaOCl are not predictably effective in root canal disinfection. These findings are not surprising because the root canal system is complex and contains numerous ramifications and anatomical irregularities. The microorganisms in root canals not only invade the anatomic irregularities of the root canal system but also are present in the dentinal tubules. Therefore further disinfection with an effective antimicrobial agent may be necessary and it well1mown that use of intracanal medication will lower bacterial count in infected root canals. Calcium hydroxide has a long history of use in endodontics, and more attention has been given to the use of calcium hydroxide as intracanal dressing for the treatment of infected pulp. However, when treatment is completed in one visit, no intracanal medications other than intracanal irrigants are used. Recently, a mixture of a tetracycline isomer, an acid, and a detergent(MTAD), has been introduced as a final rinse for disinfuction of the root canal system. It has been shown that MTAD is able to remove the smear layer with minimal erosive changes on the surface of dentin, and is effective against Enterococcus faecalis, a microorganism resistant to the action of other antimicrobial medications. In another study, the ability of MTAD was investigated to disinfect contaminated root canals with whole saliva and compared its efficacy to that of NaOCl Based on the results, it seems that MTAD is significantly more effective than 5.25% NaOCl in eradicating bacteria from infected root canals. In the cytotoxicity evaluation, MTAD is less cytotoxic than engenol, 3% $H20_2,\;Ca(OH)_2$ paste, 5.25% NaGCl, Peridex, and EDTA and more cytotoxic than 2.63%,1.31% and 0.66% NaOCl. Is it promising or transient?
Disinfection is a very important process in water plant on account of our surface water usage. Particularly. the rainfall of Korea is concentrated in summer time. it is almost carried away to ocean before our utilization as water resource. To overcome the unbalance of water resource, artificial dams and reservoirs are constructed. According to such storage of water to aggravate water pollution and make the increase of water cleaning chemicals. Chlorine, as a main traditional chemical for water treatment. is focused on account of THMS formation in recent days. In this paper. the data of a water plant located in Seoul is adopted as the foundation of water quality analysis and introduce the substitute chemicals to supplement the harmful formation. additionally. Conclusions are summarized as follows: 1. The water quality of water resource is the worst in summer time and the supply of cleaning chemical is inevitably increased on account of general bacteria increase. 2. Chlorine, as a main chemical for water cleaning, formed the cancer-causing organic THMS with water molecules. 3. One of substitute chemical. chlorine dioxids suppress the formation of THMS comparing with the case of chlorine only. Therefore. the continuous research of substitute chemicals should be activated. 4. As the supply of disinfected clean water concerned with the citizen sanitary, the cultivation of professionals and academic conference must be needed on the basis of nation

Silkworm diseases are better prevented than cured. Disinfection and hygiene are the two important aspects in silkworm rearing to prevent the diseases. Suitable disinfectant is the primary need to disinfect the rearing house, its surroundings and appliances to eliminate the persistent pathogens from the rearing environment. In this direction, Serichlor, a new disinfectant in Indian Sericulture marketed as Serichlor-60 (contains 60,000 ppm of chlorine dioxide) and Serichlor-20 (contains 20,000 ppm of chlorine dioxide) has been evaluated for its germicidal effect against the pathogens of silkworm, viz., spores of Nosema bombycis, Bacillus thuringiensis, polyhedra of BmNPV and conidia of Beauveria bassiana both in vitro and in vivo. Results indicated that high concentration (2,500 ppm of chlorine dioxide) is required to kill all the pathogens at 100% level. The efficacy of the Serichlor was greatly enhanced by the addition of 0.5% slaked lime solution. 500 ppm of chlorine dioxide in 0.5% slaked lime solution was found effective against all the pathogens tested. This concentration of disinfectant was also found effective for disinfection of rearing house, rearing appliances and silkworm egg surface. The disinfectant is stable, non hazardous, least corrosive and most suitable for Indian Sericulture.
The influence of chlorine on marine bacterial communities was examined in this study. A non-chlorine-adapted marine bacterial community (NCAM) and a chlorine-adapted bacterial community (CAM, bacterial community treated with $0.2mg-Cl_2/L$ chlorine) were cultivated for 1 month. A distinct difference was observed between the NCAM and CAM, which shared only eight operational taxonomic units (OTUs), corresponding to 13.1% of the total number of identified OTUs. This result suggested that chlorine was responsible for the changes in the marine bacterial communities. Kordiimonas aquimaris was found to be a chlorine-resistant marine bacterium. The effect of intermittent chlorination on the two marine biofilm communities formed on the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane surface was investigated using various chlorine concentrations (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mg $Cl_2/L$). Although the average number of adherent marine bacteria on the RO membrane over a period of 7 weeks decreased with increasing chlorine concentration, disinfection efficiencies showed substantial fluctuations throughout the experiment. This is due to chlorine depletion that occurs during intermittent chlorination. These results suggest that intermittent chlorination is not an effective disinfection strategy to control biofilm formation.
Background: This study was conducted to analyze the time for re-detection of bacteria after surface disinfection using wet wipes, isopropyl alcohol, and benzalkonium chloride antibacterial tissue and provide standards for re-execution of surface disinfection with wet and antibacterial tissues. Methods: Seven laptops were wiped with wet tissue and isopropyl alcohol and benzalkonium chloride antibacterial tissues. Test areas were rubbed with a sterile cotton swab at baseline and after 30, 60, and 120 min. After plating on a tryptic soy agar medium, the number of colonies was counted by culturing at 36.5℃ for 24 h. Results: The average number of bacterial colonies was 5.85 ± 4.33 before isopropyl alcohol wiping and nil after wiping. The average number of bacterial colonies was 12.28 ± 14.67 benzalkonium chloride wiping and nil after wiping. Before wiping with wet wipes, the average number of bacterial colonies on laptop surfaces was 3.42 ± 5.22. Bacteria decreased after wiping with wet wipes but increased again over time. Conclusions: Wet wipes can temporarily reduce bacteria but are unsuitable for removing bacteria.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of hot water treatment and pH corrected lime sulfur combination treatment on the fungicidal and bacterial disinfection effects and germination rate of organic lettuce seeds. Among the followers, Alternaria sp. was infected 53.3% and Aspergillus sp. and Cladosporium sp. Infected 14.5% and 5.4%, respectively. Bacteria were isolated only Pseudomonas sp., and infected with 16.5%. In order to investigate the effect of disinfection on the temperature of hot water (45℃, 50℃, 55℃ and 60℃). The seed germination rate sharply decreased with increasing temperature and treatment time. The germination effect and germination rate of the follower were highest when hot water treatment was carried out for 20 minutes in hot water at 50℃. In the case of combined treatment of 50℃ hot water for 10 min and 0.4% pH adjusted lime sulfur mixture, showed the highest sterilization effect and germination rate with 100% and 97.6%, respectively. The results of this study can contribute to the development of technology to sterilize not only seed surface but also fungi and bacteria inside of seed.
Recently, passengers using public transport are concerned about the effects of COVID-19 and fine dust. Therefore, from February 2020 to February 2021, we investigated whether SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected even after disinfection in 55 public transportation places visited by confirmed patients in Seoul. 34 air samples and 702 object surface samples were collected and tested with RT-PCR, one surface sample was positive. In addition, preemptive investigations were conducted in 22 subway trains that passengers were being on board at that time. 1,018 preemptive tests were performed, and all were negative. Although PM-2.5 is dangerous in itself, it can be a potential carrier of viruses. It seemed that a solution was needed as one line continuously exceeded the criteria of PM-2.5. Through this study, it is judged that cluster infection in public transportation can be prevented if efforts to reduce the concentration of fine dust, appropriate disinfection management, and personal disinfection such as wearing a mask in public transportations.
