The adhesion strength as well as the electrochemical properties of $LiNi_{0.4}Mn_{0.4}Co_{0.2}O_2$ electrodes containing various conductive carbons (CC) such as fiber-like carbon, vapor-grown carbon fiber, carbon nanotubes, particle-like carbon, Super P, and Ketjen black is compared. The morphological properties is investigated using scanning electron microscope to reveal the interaction between the different CC and the active material. The surface and interfacial cutting analysis system is also used to measure the adhesion strength between the aluminum current collector and the composite film, and the adhesion strength between the active material and the CC of the electrodes. The results obtained from the measured adhesion strength points to the fact that the structure and the particle size of CC additives have tremendous influence on the binding property of the composite electrodes, and this in turn affects the electrochemical property of the configured electrodes.
In this study, the hydrophilicity of the metal fiber is improved by introducing an oxygen-containing functional group to the fiber surface after treatment of the metal fiber using the oxygen plasma treatment time as an experimental variable. For the surface modification of metal fibers, changes in surface properties before and after plasma treatment were observed using SEM and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In order to observe the effect of the plasma treatment time on the surface of the metal fiber, the change in contact angle of the metal fiber with respect to a polar solvent and a non-polar solvent was measured. After calculating the change in surface free energy using the measured contact angle, the contact angle and the surface free energy for metal fibers before and after oxygen plasma treatment were compared, and the correlation with the adhesion work was also considered. The microdroplet specimens were prepared to investigate the effect of surface changes of these metal fibers on the improvement of shear strength at the interface when combined with other materials and the interfacial shear strength was measured, and the correlation with the adhesion work was also identified. Therefore, the oxygen plasma treatment of the metal fiber results in an increase in the physical surface area on the fiber surface and a change in contact angle and surface energy according to the introduction of the oxygen-containing functional group on the surface. This surface hydrophilization resulted in improving the interfacial shear strength with the polymer resin.
Advanced adhesive technologies and demanding applications of adhesive joints can no longer be developed successfully by the traditional "trial and error" approach. Appropriate technical solutions require reference to a reliable basis of well-established scientific knowledge about the elementary mechanisms of adhesion (i.e. the 'fundamental adhesion') as they are responsible for the capability of the compound w transmit mechanical force between the adhesive and the substrate surface (i.e. the 'practical adhesion'). Adhesion mechanisms also influence the formation of polymer structure in the adhesive and the resulting macromolecular dynamics in the interphase that is formed in the adhesive near to the substrate. These manifold molecular factors rule the macroscopic behaviour of an adhesive bond line in terms of mechanical and other physical properties as well as in terms of durability. This paper reviews the level of refinement that understanding of fundamental adhesion has achieved up to now.

In this study, we examined the relationships between the coating film's properties, such as microhardness, adhesion of coating fil $m_strate, and machining tool's life time. Samples were prepared by coating TiN on the 5.5 diameter twist drills using reactive ion plating technology, For measuring microhardness and adhesion of fil $m_strate, HSS plate was used for substrate. TiN coated drill's life time was dependent on the adhesion of fil $m_strate and averagely increased by several ten times more than uncoated drill's. The major parameter affecting TiN coated drill's life time was the strong adhesion between coating film and substrate.ate.

Electron beam can provide convenient way to heat the substrate during Hollow Cathode Discharge (HCD) ion plating of Ti(C, N)films. Densification of columnar structrue is enhanced by longer duration of electron beam heating(EBH). While strong(111) texture is identified always to be formed, the amount of (200) oriented grains which coherently interfaced with carbide particles of the substrate increased with heating(EBH). In turns, these crystallogaphical change lead to the increase of micro hardness and adhesion of coating. Adhesion of Ti(C, N) films increased more dramatically in case of ASP30 substrate of which carbide particles dispersed more finely than M42. Therefore, it could be concluded that both the density of film and interfacial structure can affect the adhesion property. Overheating of substrate could be resulted in low adhesion resistance due to high residual stress developed in the film.

TiN coating were deposited onto different WC-Co substrates using arc ion plating (AIP) technique. The structure and morphology for the deposited coating were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adhesion behavior of the deposited TiN coating was investigated with a conventional scratch test. Effects of WC particle size and Co content on the adhesion strength between the deposited TiN coating and substrate were studied. During the scratch test, the value of critical load was dependent of WC particle size and Co content on substrate. As the WC particle size and Co content on substrate decreased, the critical load increased. The highest critical load, approximately 110N, was obtained at WC particle size of 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ and Co content of 10wt.%.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the adhesion of concrete pipe lining using polymer mortar. The polymer mortars with various mix proportions are prepared, and tested for flexural and compressive strengths, adhesion in tension, and the aspects of lining surface and workability are evaluated. Form the test results, it is apparent that the appropriate polymer mortars of lining to concrete pipe can be produced. The flexural and compressive strengths of polymer mortar for lining are affected by type of resin, and aggregates content, and water content at the surface of concrete pipe is important factor for improvement in adhesion of polymer mortar. It is obvious that the economical polymer mortars having an excellent cost performance ration can be produced through this study.

The peel adhesion and plastic deformation in Cu-Cr alloy films, sputter-deposited onto polyimide films, have been studied as a function of Cr content in the film. The adhesion strength has been measured by T-peel test and the amount of plastic deformation in the peeled metal strip was determined qualitatively by XRD technique. Peel adhesion strength has a maximum in the film containing 22-33wt.% Cr and the peel strength of pure Cr film is lower than the maximum. The film having the highest peel strength is deformed most heavily. The effect of Cr content on the peel strength is discussed in terms of the interfacial bond strength and mechanical properties of Cu-Cr alloy film.

Titanium nitride films have been prepared on various substrates (silicon wafer, HSS) by cathode arc ion plating process to measure microhardness, adhesion and wear-resistant behaviors by changing the substrate bias voltages (0∼-300V), thickness and roughness. Microhardnesses were measured by micro vickers hardness tester, the adhesion strengths were evaluated by acoustic signals through the scratch test with incremental applied load. As the substrate bias voltages were increased, the {111} orientation was predominant, the microhardnesses and adhesion strengths of tool steel were observed to be stronger than those of without subatrate bias voltage. Adhesion strengths of the substrate bias were 4-7 times higher than those of without the substrate bias, confirmed by SEM with EDX. Wear resistances were used pin-on-disk tribotester and TiN costing reduced the abrasive wear. As the substrate bias was increased, the weight loss and the friction coefficient was decreased.

Kevlar was chemically surface modified with resorcinol-formaldehyde(RF) prepolymer and VP rubber latex for application to high strength tirecords. RF prepolymer was easily obtained by polymerization at room temperature in the presence of a base catalyst. The mechanical and thermal properties of Kevlar were not significantly changed during surface treated under various conditions. The change of adhesion with rubber were investigated through H-test method. Maximum increase of adhesion force between rubber and Kevlar was obtained up to 40% than that of untreated one when the fiber was soaked in RFL dipping solution and thermally treated at $170^{\circ}C$ for 3 - 5min.
