  • ($Ti_{ 1-x}$$Al_{ x}$)N has been deposited on high speed steel (HSS) substrate using PECVD from the gas mixture of $TiC1_4$, $AlC1_4$, $NH_3$, $H_2$, and Ar. The correlation between the microstructure and the mechanical properties was investigated. ($Ti_{1-x}$$Al_{ x}$)N showed single phase NaCl-structure up to X=0.87, while a mixed phase of NaCl Type (Ti, Al) N and wurtzite structure AlN was observed for 0.87$Ti_{1-x}$ $Al_{x}$ )N became by degrees as increasing X, which made the hardness of the coating higher by Al addition. When the coating was composed of a mixed phase, however, the hardness decreased abruptly due to the effect of soft AlN phase. The wear volume of the coatings could be obtained as the concentration of the coating was varied, and the relation between the wear volume and hardness or the adhesion strength was discussed.

  • A layer-by-layer coating was produced using electrophoretic deposition for a HA/Al2O3 coating layer and a bioglass coating layer on Co-Cr-Mo alloy with a roughness of 0.5 ㎛ (400 emery paper SiC). The corrosion behaviour was analyzed by assessing the coating layers' exceptional corrosion resistance, which outperformed the substrate. Cr ion release test using AAS was carried out, indicating that factional graded coating inhibited ion release from the uncoated substrate to coated sample. The porosity was expressed as a percentage, representing the extent of imperfections on the surface of all coatings. These imperfections fell within an acceptable range of 1% to 3%. The roughness of the coated surface was measured using atomic force microscopy, which revealed an excellent roughness value of 3.32 nm. Tape test technique for adhesion revealed that the removal area of the substrate coating layer varied by 11.92%. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of all coating material peaks and verified phases of the deposited coating layers. These findings provided evidence that the coating composition remains unaffected by the electrophoretic deposition process. The bioactivity was assessed by immersion in a simulated bodily fluid, which revealed the formation of HCA during a period of 5 days.

  • Interfacial interactions and interphases played a key role in multicomponent materials irrespectively of the number and type of their components or their actual structure. They were equally important in particulate filled polymer, polymer blends, fibers-reinforced advanced composites, nanocomposites or biomimetic materials. Recognition of the role of the main factors influencing interfacial adhesion and proper surface modification could lead to significant progress in many fields of research and development, as well as in related technologies. Although the role and importance of interfaces and interphases were the same for all multicomponent materials, the surface modification could be always selected according to the objectives targeted, as well as to the characteristics of the particular system. In this wort therefore, several types of surface modification were performed to improve the interfacial interactions between two components in composite system and their results for the composites were investigated.

  • A curved fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) panel is produced with a certain width depending on allowances of manufacturing processes and facilities. An targeted arch-shaped structure could be built by sequential connection of series of the FRP panels. The connection manner between the FRP panels could be given by chemical treatment, mechanical treatment and hybrid method. Among those, the connection between the panels by chemical treatment is commonly adopted. Therefore, For an optimized design of the connected part between FRP pannels, a number of direct shear tests have been undertaken in terms of a number of parameters: surface treatment conditions, bonding materials, etc.. As results, surface grinding condition by sand paper or surface treatment by sand blasting appear properly acceptable methods, and epoxy and acryl resins are shown to be effective bonding materials for the purpose in this study.

  • The aim of this study was to fabricate a submicro-and micro-patterned fibronectin coated wafer for a cell culture, which allows the positions and dimensions of the attached cells to be controlled. A replica molding was made into silicon via a photomask in quartz, using E-beam lithography, and then fabricated a polydimethylsiloxane stamp using the designed silicon mold. Hexadecanethiol $[HS(CH_2){_{15}}CH_3]$, adsorbed on the raised plateau of the surface of polydimethylsiloxane stamp, was contact-printed to form self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of hexadecanethiolate on the surface of an Au-coated glass wafer. In order to form another SAM for control of the surface wafer properties, a hydrophilic hexa (ethylene glycol) terminated alkanethiol $[HS(CH_2){_{11}}(OCH_2CH_2){_6}OH]$ was also synthesized. The structural changes were confirmed using UV and $^1H-NMR$ spectroscopies. A SAM terminated in the hexa(ethylene glycol) groups was subsequently formed on the bare gold remaining on the surface of the Aucoated glass wafer. In order to aid the attachment of cells, fibronectin was adsorbed onto the resulting wafer, with the pattern formed on the gold-coated wafer confirmed using immunofluorescence staining against fibronectin. Fibronectin was adsorbed only onto the SAMs terminated in the methyl groups of the substrate. The hexa (ethylene glycol)-terminated regions resisted the adsorption of protein. Human dermal fibroblasts (P=4), obtained from newborn foreskin, only attached to the fibronectin-coated, methyl-terminated hydrophobic regions of the patterned SAMs. N-HDFs were more actively adhered, and spread in a pattern spacing below $14{\mu}m$, rather than above $17{\mu}m$, could easily migrate on the substrate containing spacing of $10{\mu}m$ or less between the strip lines.

  • This study is interested in manufacturing the self-cleaning silicate concrete surface impregnant including tetra ethyl ortho silicate, lithium silicate for the repair of the exposed concrete surface and the color concrete requiring the advanced function in view of the concrete appearance. The concrete surface layer change and static contact angel was tested for the review of application. The result of this study shows that the effective silicate is tetra ethyl ortho silicate and lithium silicate. The adhesion in tension is satisfied with performance requirement of KS standard but the reinforcement of concrete substrate is slight. So, The self-cleaning silicate concrete impregnant of this study is more desirable for the improvement of durability rather than the reinforcement.

  • In this research, fretting tests were conducted in air to investigate the wear characteristics of fuel cladding materials with the fretting parameters such as normal load, slip amplitude, frequency and the number of cycles. A high frequency fretting wear tester was designed for this experiment by KAERI. After the experiments, the wear volume and the shape of wear contour were measured by the surface roughness tester. Tribologically transformed structures(TTS) were analysed by means of optical and scanning electron microscopes to identify the main wear mechanisms. The results of this study showed that the wear volume were increased with increasing slip amplitude, and the shape of wear contour was transformed V-type to W-type. Also, it was found that the critical slip amplitude was 168${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. These phenomena mean that wear mechanism transformed partial slip to gross slip to accelerate wear volume. The wear depth increased with an increase of friction coefficient due to increase of normal load and frequency. The fretting wear mechanisms were believed that, after adhesion and surface plastic deformation occurred by relative sliding motion on the contact between two specimens, TTS creation was induced by surface strain hardening and wear debris were detached from the contact surface which were produced by the micro crack propagation and creation.

  • Breast cancer cells undergo transformation when they spread into surrounding tissues. Studies have shown that cancer cells undergo surface alterations and interact with the surrounding microenvironment during the invasion process. The aim of the present study was to analyse these cancer cell surface alterations and interactions of cancer cells and stroma. Twenty 1-methyl-1-nitrosourea-induced breast cancer samples taken from five rats were fixed in McDowell-Trump fixative and then washed in 0.1 M phosphate buffer. The samples were then treated with osmium tetroxide before being washed in distilled water and subsequently dehydrated through graded ethanols. The dehydrated samples were immersed in hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS), then following removal of excess HMDS, the samples were air dried at room temperature in a dessicator. The dried samples were mounted onto specimen stubs and coated with gold coater before being viewed under a scanning electron microscope. We detected the presence of membrane ruffles on the surface of cancer cells and the formation of unique surface membrane protrusions to enhance movement and adhesion to the surrounding stroma during the process of invasion. Advancing cancer cells demonstrated formation of lamellipodia and invadopodia. The stroma at the advancing edge was desmoplastic with many collagen fibres laid down near the cancer cells. Our data suggest that all of these abnormalities could act as hallmarks of invasiveness for breast cancer.

  • Recently, the performances of electrical and electronic devices are improving while the sizes are becoming smaller. As sound-generating systems, the two-dimensional speakers have been developed in place of conventional three-dimensional ones. Piezoelectric materials show the mechanical vibrations due to the voltage applied from outside the materials. The early film speakers had a limitations of output power in that it was not easy to make the conducting macromolecular films on the surfaces of the materials due to the internal chemical properties of materials. We have adopted the corona surface treatment in order to improve the output characteristics by increasing the adhesion of the coating material on to the surface of the center material of piezo film. The results showed the improvement of output power in the wider range of operating frequencies.
