The ammonia decomposition reaction has been of increasing interest as a means of treating ammonia in flue gas in the presence of precious metal catalyst. Various catalysts, $Pt-Rh/Al_2O_3$, $Pt-Rh/TiO_2$, $Pt-Rh/ZrO_2$, $Pt-Pd/Al_2O_3$, $Pd-Rh/Al_2O_3$, $Pd-Rh/TiO_2$, $Pd-Rh/ZrO_2$, $Pt-Pd-Rh/Al_2O_3$, $Pd/Ga-Al_2O_3$, $Rh/Ga-Al_2O_3$, and Ru/Ga-$Al_2O_3$, were synthesized by using excess wet impregnation method. Using a homemade 1/4" reactor at $10,000{\sim}50,000hr^{-1}$ of space velocity in the presence of precious metal catalyst ammonia decomposition reactions were carried out to investigate the catalyst activity. The inlet ammonia concentration was maintained at 2,000 ppm, with an air balance. Both $T_{50}$ and $T_{90}$, defined as the temperatures where 50% and 90% of ammonia, respectively, are converted, decreased significantly when alumina-supported catalysts were applied. In terms of catalytic performance on the ammonia conversion in the presence of hydrogen sulfide, $Pt-Rh/Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed no effect on the poisoning caused by hydrogen sulfide. These results indicate that platinum-rhodium bimetallic catalyst is a useful catalyst for ammonia decomposition.

A series of experiments using atmospheric-pressure non-thermal plasma coupled with transition metal catalysts were performed to remove ethylene from agricultural storage facilities. The non-thermal plasma was created by dielectric barrier discharge, which was in direct contact with the catalyst pellets. The transition metals such as Ag and $V_2O_5$ were supported on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. The effect of catalyst type, specific input energy (SIE) and oxygen content on the removal of ethylene was examined to understand the behavior of the hybrid plasma-catalytic reactor system. With the other parameters kept constant, the plasma-catalytic activity for the removal of ethylene was in order of $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ from high to low. Interestingly, the rate of plasma-catalytic ozone generation was in order of $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, implying that the catalyst activation mechanisms by plasma are different for different catalysts. The results obtained by varying the oxygen content indicated that nitrogen-derived reactive species dominated the removal of ethylene under oxygen-lean condition, while ozone and oxygen atoms were mainly involved in the removal under oxygen-rich condition. When the plasma was coupled with $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, nearly complete removal of ethylene was achieved at oxygen contents higher than 5% by volume (inlet ethylene: 250 ppm; gas flow rate: $1.0Lmin^{-1}$; SIE: ${\sim}355JL^{-1}$).
Heterogeneous metallocene catalysts supported on montmorillonite (MMT), [$Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MMT, $Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MAO/MMT, and $Cp_2ZrCl_2$ + MAO/MMT], were prepared with three different methods of immobilization and tested for ethylene polymerization. The heterogeneous catalysts immobilized on organo clay (30B-MMT) showed the higher metal loading and polymerization activity than those immobilized on natural clay $Na^+-MMT$. These results suggest that the hydroxyl groups of organo clay interlayers react with the MAO and catalyst through the chemical bond. The metallocene catalyst supported directly on MMT showed lower activity for ethylene polymerization compared to the homogeneous systems, while MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$, catalysts treated with MAO before impregnation, showed a higher activity. The polymers obtained from MMT-supported catalysts have higher melting point, molecular weight and molecular weight distributions than those of homogeneous catalysts. The polymer particles with increasing significant size. Ethylene polymerization over 30B-MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst was also performed varying the process variables to optimize the process conditions.
Heterogeneously-catalyzed oxidation of aqueous phase trichloroethylene (TCE) over supported metal oxides has been conducted to establish an approach to eliminate ppm levels of organic compounds in water. A continuous flow reactor system was designed to effect predominant reaction parameters in determining catalytic activity of the catalysts for wet TCE decomposition as a model reaction. 5 wt.% $CoO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst exhibited a transient period in activity vs. on-stream time behavior, suggesting that the surface structure of the $CoO_x$ might be altered with on-stream hours; regardless, it is probable to be the most promising catalyst. Not only could the bare support be inactive for the wet decomposition reaction at $36^{\circ}C$, but no TCE removal also occurred by the process of adsorption on $TiO_2$ surface. The catalytic activity was independent of all particle sizes used, thereby representing no mass transfer limitation in intraparticle diffusion. Very low TCE conversion appeared for $TiO_2$-supported $NiO_x$ and $CrO_x$ catalysts. Wet oxidation performance of supported Cu and Fe catalysts, obtained through an incipient wetness and ion exchange technique, was dependent primarily on the kinds of the metal oxides, in addition to the acidic solid supports and the preparation routes. 5 wt.% $FeO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst gave no activity in the oxidation reaction at $36^{\circ}C$, while 1.2 wt.% Fe-MFI was active for the wet decomposition depending on time on-stream. The noticeable difference in activity of the both catalysts suggests that the Fe oxidation states involved to catalytic redox cycle during the course of reaction play a significant role in catalyzing the wet decomposition as well as in maintaining the time on-stream activity. Based on the results of different $CoO_x$ loadings and reaction temperatures for the decomposition reaction at $36^{\circ}C$ with $CoO_x/TiO_2$, the catalyst possessed an optimal $CoO_x$ amount at which higher reaction temperatures facilitated the catalytic TCE conversion. Small amounts of the active ingredient could be dissolved by acidic leaching but such a process gave no appreciable activity loss of the $CoO_x$ catalyst.

This study has been focused on the partial oxidation(POX) of n-octane over Rh-containing catalysts supported on alumina. The catalysts for this reaction were prepared by incipient wetness(IW) and co-gel(CG) methods, followed by the calcination at $900{\circ}C$ or $1,200{\circ}C$. When applied to the POX of n-octane carried out at $600{\circ}C$ with C/O=3 and GHSV=3,450/h, the catalyst prepared by the CG method and calcined at $1,200{\circ}C$ showed the best activity, yielding 42% syngas($H_2$+CO) with the $H_2$/CO ratio of $2{\sim}2.4$. To enhance the activity and stability of catalysts, bimetallic catalysts were synthesized by the CG method. As a result, the performance of Rh-Ni/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was superior to that of Rh/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst in terms of the catalyst stability, due to the retarding effect on the Rh-to-$Rh_2O_3$ transition by the addition of Ni. This result was confirmed by XRD, TEM, and TPR characterizations.

The pyrolysized carbon xerogel and aerogels were prepared from the sol-gel polymerization of resorcinol-formaldehyde(RF) followed by the dry process under ambient pressure and supercritical carbon dioxide condition respectively. The thermal behaviour of RF polymer xerogel was investigated with TGA analyzer to correspond with the pyrolysis process. The surface properties such as particle size, morphology and the point of zero charge of the pyrolysized porous carbon aerogels were studied for the precious metal catalyst supported media. It was found that the volume of the polymer aerogel decreased because of the significant linear shrinkage and weight loss of polymer gel during the carbonization. The point of zero charge of the carbon aerogel pyrolysized at $1050^{\circ}C$ under inert gas flow was about 10.

Reaction characteristics and correlations between the acidic property and catalytic activity of heteropoly acid catalyst on ETBE synthesis as a gasoline octane enhancer were investigated. The amount of pyridine adsorbed on heteropoly acid catalyst and catalytic activity in the synthesis of ETBE showed a good correlation. But ammonia failed to show such a correlation because of the complex formation of ammonia adsorbed and transition metal ions. In the case of supported catalyst catalytic activity and product distribution were mainly affected by the adsorption characteristics of TBA or iso-butene.

A reforming catalyst for hydrogen production from ammonia is being studied. Non-novel metal based Ni catalysts for use in ammonia reforming processes are being developed. In this study, the ammonia reforming characteristics according to Ni content of the alumina pellet supported catalyst in the mid-temperature region were investigated under different space velocity. 20 Ni and 3,000 h-1 showed the best catalytic activity with ammonia conversion of 63% among all conditions.
[ $M/Al_2O_3$ ] (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) catalysts supported on commercial alumina ($Al_2O_3$) were prepared by an impregnation method, and were applied to the hydrogen production by auto-thermal reforming of ethanol. It was revealed that each catalyst retained its own metallic phase and product distribution strongly depended on the identity of active metal. Among the catalysts prepared, $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and $Co/Al_2O_3$ showed the best catalytic performance in the auto-thermal reforming of ethanol. However, the reaction mechanisms over these two catalysts were different. Ni/Al_2O_3 catalyst showed 100% ethanol conversion at $500^{\circ}C$, but it exhibited a rapid decrease in hydrogen selectivity. Although $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed an excellent performance in hydrogen selectivity, on the other hand, no significant improvement in hydrogen yield was observed due to the low ethanol conversion over the catalyst.

The synthesis of Fischer-Tropsch (FT) oil is the catalytic hydrogenation of CO to give a range of products, which can be used for the production of high-quality diesel fuel, gasoline and linear chemicals. This studied catalyst was prepared Cobalt-supported alumina and silica by the incipient wet impregnation of the nitrates of cobalt, promoter and organic solvent with supports. Cobalt catalysts were calcined at $350^{\circ}C$ before being loaded into the FT reactors. After the reduction of catalyst has been carried out under $450^{\circ}C$ for 24h, FT reaction of the catalyst has been carried out at GHSV of 4,000/hr under $200^{\circ}C$ and 20atm. From these experimental results, we have obtained the results as following; In case of $SiO_2$ catalysts, the activity of 12wt% $Cobalt-SiO_2$ synthesized by organic solvent was about 2 or 3 times higher than the activity of 12wt% $Cobalt-SiO_2$ catalyst synthesized without organic solvent. In particular, the activity of the $Cobalt-SiO_2$ catalyst prepared in the presence of an organic solvent P was two to three times higher than that of the $Cobalt-SiO_2$ catalyst prepared without the organic solvent. Effect of Cr and Cu metal as a promoter was found little. 200 h long-term activity test was performed with a $Co/SiO_2$ catalyst prepared in the presence of an organic solvent of Glyoxal solution.
