Basis Set Superposition Error on Structures and Complexation Energies of Organo-Alkali Metal Iodides

  • Theoretical studies have been performed to study the binding characteristics of the alkali metal iodides, M-I (M = Li, Na, K), to poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO, I), poly(ethylene amine) (PEA, II) and poly(ethylene N-methylamine) (PEMA, III) via the B3LYP method. In this study, two types of complexes, singly-coordinated systems (SCS) and doubly-coordinated systems (DCS), were considered, and dissociation energies (${\Delta}E_D$) were calculated both with and without basis set superposition error (BSSE). Two types of counterpoise (CP) approach were investigated in this work, but the ${\Delta}E_D$ values corrected by using the function CP (fCP) correction exhibited an unusual trend in some cases due to deformation of the sub-units. This problem was solved by including geometry relaxation in the CP-corrected (GCP) interaction energy. On the other hand, the effects of the BSSE on the structures were very small when the complexes were re-optimized on the CP-corrected (RCP) potential energy surface (PES), even if the bond lengths between X and $M^+$ ($d_{{X-M}^+}$) and between $M^+$ and $I^-$ ($d_{M^+-I^-}$) were slightly lengthened. Therefore, neither the GCP nor RCP corrections made much difference to the dissociation energies.

Mechanical performance of sand-lightweight concrete-filled steel tube stub column under axial compression

  • In order to study the axial compression performance of sand-lightweight concrete-filled steel tube (SLCFST) stub columns, three circular SLCFST (C-SLCFST) stub column specimens and three SLCFST square (S-SLCFST) stub column specimens were fabricated and static monotonic axial compression performance testing was carried out, using the volume ratio between river sand and ceramic sand in sand-lightweight concrete (SLC) as a varying parameter. The stress process and failure mode of the specimens were observed, stress-strain curves were obtained and analysed for the specimens, and the ultimate bearing capacity of SLCFST stub column specimens was calculated based on unified strength theory, limit equilibrium theory and superposition theory. The results show that the outer steel tubes of SLCFST stub columns buckled outward, core SLC was crushed, and the damage to the upper parts of the S-SLCFST stub columns was more serious than for C-SLCFST stub columns. Three stages can be identified in the stress-strain curves of SLCFST stub columns: an elastic stage, an elastic-plastic stage and a plastic stage. It is suggested that AIJ-1997, CECS 159:2004 or AIJ-1997, based on superposition theory, can be used to design the ultimate bearing capacity under axial compression for C-SLCFST and S-SLCFST stub columns; for varying replacement ratios of natural river sand, the calculated stress-strain curves for SLCFST stub columns under axial compression show good fitting to the test measure curves.

  • A quantitative analysis of a surface roughness for a precision machining of a sculptured surface in milling process is treated under superposition theory in this paper. The geometrical surface rouhgness is calculated as a function of feed per tooth, path interval, radii of tool and cutting edge, and radii of curvatures of workiece. Through machining experiments in a 3-axis machining center, we confirmed the adequacy of the adequacy of the analysis. While cutter mark is neglegible in ball endmilling, it is significant in flat endmilling. When feed per tooth is very small, flat endmilling gives superior finish to ball endmilling. In flat endmilling, cutting condition and cutter path should be strategically chosen to balance the cutter mark height and cusp height.

  • This paper presents a sensorless control strategy of a PMSM(Permanent Magnet Sycchoronous Motor). This method is very simple to compute the position angle of a rotor. A principle and a practical solution are described. A sensorless control algorithm is proposed to remove a mechanical position sensor. The theory is based on the superposition principle. The state equation of a motor is divided into two conditions: one is the state equation of exciting voltage and phase current in a constraint, the other is the state equation of back EMF(Electromotive Force) and phase current in a short circuit. Based on the analysis, short circuit current by back EMF is computed and then the information of position angle is calculated. The proposed method is verified by experimental results.

On Effects of Large-Deflected Beam Analysis by Iterative Transfer Matrix Approach

  • A small-deflected beam can be easily solved by assuming a linear system. But a large-deflected beam can not be solved by superposition of the displacements, because the system is nonlinear. The solutions for the large-deflection problems can not be obtained directly from elementary beam theory for linearized systems since the basic assumptions are no longer valid. Specifically, elementary theory neglects the square of the first derivative in the beam curvature formula and provides no correction for the shortening of the moment-arm cause by transverse deflection. These two effects must be considered to analyze the large deflection. Through the correction of deflected geometry and internal axial force, the proposed new approach is developed from the linearized beam theory. The solutions from the proposed approach are compared with exact solutions.

  • In the electric railway systems, it is very important that we should design the system configuration, location and power capacity of substation. This paper presents the results of system configuration and system design of the DC traction power supply for the test line of Light Rail Vehicle. The voltage fluctuation of train and the power capacity of substation are calculated by computer simulation using the nodal equation, K.C.L/K.V.L, Ohm's law and superposition theory.

  • Reverberation time is the well known theory and widely used in commercial apparatus to get reverberation time. However large fluctuation in low frequency region occurs in a small cabin due to superposition of a few modes. This paper investigates this phenomena in terms of modal density in frequency domain and suggests a method to get lower limit of reverberation time using the integration of the time-SPL diagram. The suggestion is confirmed by simulation and shows reasonable results to get lower limit of reverberation time and maximum absorbing power in the cabin.

  • In queueing theory, polling systems have been widely studied as a way of serving several stations in cyclic order. In this paper we consider Markov-modulated Poisson process which is useful for approximating a superposition of heterogeneous arrivals. We derive the mean waiting time of each station in a polling system where the arrival process is modeled by a Markov-modulated Poisson process.

  • The modal analysis based on deformations is the method to drived dynamic responsed from superposition of natural frequency and mode shape. In order to free vibration analysis of the structures, Aluminum-made model is used in experiment. The dynamic characteristic of the structures are determined from acceleration measurements using impulse hammer. Experimenrt input and output signal are derive from impact hammer and the one accerometer. This paper present three methods for calculating the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the structure with theory value and finite element analysis, experiment. The results were good approximated about natural frequency and mode shape.

  • This Paper presents a method for unfinished work transition probability distribution of modulated $n^*D/D/l$ queue with overload period. The Modulated $n^*D/D/l$ queue is well known as a performance analysis model of ATM multiplexer with superposition of homogeneous periodic on-off traffic sources. Theory of probability by conditioning and results of $N^*D/D/l$ queue are used for analytic methodology. The results from this paper are expected to be applied to general modulated $n^*D/D/l$ queue.
