  • This paper proposes a regulation method of DC line voltage for urban transit system fluctuated during the acceleration or deceleration by using supercapacitor. Supercapacitor is modelled electrically under the assumption of three different time constants of RC circuits with variable capacitances depending on the voltage. And its parameters are determined by the experimental measurements. The energy storage system using supercapacitors is installed based on this model, and the proposed model is tested through the simulations and experiments, and the controller for charging and discharging is designed. Finally, it is tested at Kyoungsan test site for the urban light rail road system and the energy saving effect is evaluated economically.

  • Supercapacitors, also known as electrochemical capacitors, are being extensively studied due to an increasing demand for energy-storage systems. These devices offer many advantages over conventional secondary batteries, which include the ability of fast charge propagation, long cycle-life and better storage efficiency. That is to say supercapacitor bridges the gap between conventional capacitors and batteries. A new type electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) also called supercapacitors. Recently, supercapacitors concerns about their high power density and energy density. So we experiment with EDLC by using carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and DAAQ(1,5-diaminoanthraquinone) electrode. The electrode for supercapacitor was prepared by synthesis of DAAQ covered CNFs. CNFs could be covered with very thin DAAQ oligomer from the results of CV, XRD, DSC, SEM images, and TEM images. Dissolved electrode active material in NMP solution has been drop-coated on carbon plate. Its electrochemical characteristics were investigated by cyclic voltammograms. And compared with different electrolyte of aqueous type. As a result, CNFs coated by DAAQ composite electrode showed relatively good electrochemical behaviors with respect to specific capacity and scan rate dependency.

  • $Li_2MnSiO_4$ was synthesized using the solid-state method under an Ar atmosphere at three different calcination temperatures (900, 950, and $1000^{\circ}C$). The optimization of the carbon coating was also carried out using various molar concentrations of adipic acid as the carbon source. The XRD pattern confirmed that the resulting $Li_2MnSiO_4$ particles exhibited an orthorhombic structure with a $Pmn2_1$ space group. Cyclic voltammetry was utilized to investigate the capacitive behavior of $Li_2MnSiO_4$ along with activated carbon (AC) in a hybrid supercapacitor with a two-electrode cell configuration. The $Li_2MnSiO_4$/AC cell exhibited a high discharge capacitance and energy density of $43.2Fg^{-1}$ and $54Whkg^{-1}$, respectively, at $1.0mAcm^{-2}$. The $Li_2MnSiO_4$/AC hybrid supercapacitor exhibited an excellent cycling stability over 1000 measured cycles with coulombic efficiency over > 99 %. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was conducted to corroborate the results that were obtained and described.

  • The demand for energy storage devices capable of operating at high temperatures is increasing. In order to operate at high temperatures, a device must have excellent thermal stability and no risk of explosion. Ionic liquids are electrolytes that satisfy the above conditions, and studies on improving their performance have attracted great interest. Here, we report the results of a study on the fabrication of a supercapacitor that has a composite electrolyte prepared by dispersing fumed silica in an ionic liquid. The fumed silica filler exhibits improved ionic conductivity and lower interfacial resistance. In particular, the silica nanoparticles with diameters of 10 nm exhibit better electrochemical properties than fillers of other diameters and have excellent device performance of 33 times higher than the pristine ionic liquid at high temperatures. This study can be used to improve the electrolytes of electrochemical devices, such as the next generation battery or lithium ion battery.

  • Supercapacitor is a capacitor with extraordinarily high energy density, which basically consists of current collector, active material and electrolyte. Ruthenium oxide ($RuO_2$) is one of the most widely studied active materials due to its high specific capacitance and good electrical conductivity. In general, it is known that the coating of $RuO_2$ on nanoarchitectured current collector shows improved performance of energy storage device compared to the coating on the planar current collector. Especially, the surface structure with standing coaxial nanopillars are most desirable since it can provide direct paths for efficient charge transport along the axial paths of each nanopillars and the inter-nanopillar spacing allows easy access of electrolyte ions. However, well-known fabrication methods for metal or metal oxide nanopillars, such as the process using anodize aluminum oxide (AAO) templates, often require long and complicated nanoprocess. In this work, we developed relatively simple method fabricating indium tin oxide (ITO) nanopillars via sputtering. We also electrodeposited $RuO_2$ nanoparticles onto these ITO nanopillars and investigated its physical and electrochemical properties.

  • Due to the latest research trend toward wearable energy devices, transparent and stretchable supercapacitors which can sustain their performance even under physical deformation have steadily attracted huge attention. Despite the Ag NW is the most promising candidate for fabrication of transparent and stretchable electronics, the electrochemical instability interrupts its application to development of the energy device. Here, we introduce a transparent and highly stretchable supercapacitor made by Au-Ag core shell NW network percolation electrode. The Au-Ag core shell NW synthesized by a simple solution process not only shows excellent electrical conductivity but also greatly enhanced chemical and electrochemical stability compare to pristine Ag NW. These outstanding properties of the Au-Ag core shell NW are attributed both to the core Ag NW and the Au protecting sheath layer. The proposed Au-Ag core shell NW based supercapacitor exhibits optical transmittance with outstanding mechanical stability withstanding 60% strain without any decrease of the performance. The supercapacitors connected in series are charged and discharged stable in 30% strain turning on a red LED. These notable results demonstrate the potential of the Au-Ag core shell NW as a strong candidate for development of wearable energy devices.

  • This work presents the way how to evaluate the degree of reversibility of the discharging process undergone by the nickel hydroxide film cathodically deposited on pure nickel as a positive electrode for electrochemical capacitor using the combined cyclic voltammetry and potential drop method, supplemented by galvanostatic discharge and open-circuit potential transient methods. The time interval necessary just to establish the current reversal of anodic to cathodic direction from the moment just after applying the potential inversion of anodic to cathodic direction, was obtained on cyclic voltammogram. The cathodic charge density passed upon dropping the applied potential, was calculated on potentiostatic current density-time curve. Both the time interval and the cathodic charge density in magnitude can be regarded as being measures of the degree of reversibility of the discharging process undergone by the positive active material for supercapacitor, i.e. , the longer the time interval is, the lower is the degree of reversibility and the greater the cathodic charge density is, the higher is the degree of reversibility. From the applied potential dependences of the time interval and cathodic charge density, discharge at $0.42 V_{SCE}$ was determined to be the most reversible.

  • Flexible sheets consisting of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) and carbon nanotube (CNT) are newly prepared varying the composition (CNT 20-25 wt.%) for use as a current collector of supercapacitor electrodes. The as-prepared CNT/NBR is electrodeposited with aniline using potentiodynamic cyclic voltammetry to yield a polyaniline (PANI)/CNT/NBR composite electrode. It is confirmed that the electrical conductivity of CNT/NBR current collector can be enhanced as the content of CNT increases. Cyclic voltammetry result shows that the sample of PANI/CNT(25 wt.%)/NBR composite achieves a maximum specific capacitance ($134.9\;F\;g^{-1}$) at $5\;mV\;s^{-1}$. Such supercapacitor application is possibly originated from the synergistic effects consisting of higher polarity of nitrile groups in NBR, conducting pathway of CNT, and electroactive property of PANI.

  • Novel $SnO_2$ mixed biochar composite was prepared from banana peel developed as electrode material for supercapacitor using simple chemical co-precipitation method. The physiochemical and morphological properties of activated composite $SnO_2$ mixed biochar were investigated with XRD, FTIR, UV-vis, FESEM and HRTEM. The composite accounts for outstanding electrochemical behavior such as high specific capacitance, significant rate capability and leading to good cycle retention up to 3500 cycles when used as electrode material for supercapacitors. Highly permeable $SnO_2$ mixed biochar derived from banana peel exhibited maximum specific capacitance of $465F\;g^{-1}$ at a scan rate of $10mV\;s^{-1}$ by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and $476Fg^{-1}$ at current density of $0.15Ag^{-1}$ by charge discharge studies significantly higher about 47% than previously reported identical work on banana peel biochar.

  • All solid-state thin film supercapacitor(TFSC) based on $RuO_2$ electrode was fabricated. Ruthenium oxide$(RuO_2)$ thin film was deposited on Pt/Ti/Si subsrate by d.c. magnetron sputtering. LiPON(lithium phosphorus oxynitride) thin film were deposited by r.f. reactive sputtering. X-ray diffraction patterns of $RuO_2$ and LiPON films revealed that crystal structures of both films were amorphous. To decrease resistivity of $RuO_2$ thin film, $RuO_2$ thin film was deposited with $H_2O$ vapor. In order to decide the maximum ionic conductivity, the LiPON films were prepared by various sputtering condition. The maximum ionic conductivity was $9.5\times{10}^7S/cm$. A charge-discharge measurements showed the capacity of $3\times{10-2}\;F/cm^2-\mu{m}$ for the as-fabricated TFSC. The discharging efficiency was decreased after 500 cycles by 40 %.
