  • The roasting of pyrite with a cyclone reactor have been studied in terms of investigating the reaction behavior of pyrite. The development of a fundamental model for pyrite oxidation and lime sulfation in a vertical cyclone reactor. The model assumes a chemical control shrinking core behavior for the pyrite and a fluid film control shrinking core behavior for the lime. The oxygen and sulphur dioxide concentrations and the energy balance for the gas, pyrite and lime particles are solved. The model was solved and characterized numerically. Experiments have been performed to study the influence of reaction parameters such as reactor temperatures, pyrite particle sizes, air flow rates, feeding rates, and mixing ratio of pyrite and lime. The oxidation and sulfation products were characterized chemically and physically.

  • Greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), methane (CH$_4$), nitrous oxide ($N_2$O), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), sulphur hexafluoride (SF$_{6}$), together with water vapour ($H_2O$) and ozone play an important role in determining the earth's climate. The primary cause of the enhancement of GHGs is the global use of fossil fuels to generate heat, power, and electricity for a growing world population, as well as the changes in the land use, especially for agriculture. In addition, biomass buring and biofuel emissions play major roles in the GHG emissions in the Asian region because they produce large amounts of carbon monoxide (CO), nonmethane volatile organic compounds(NMVOC), black carbon(BC) and other gases. • The surface defects of an aluminum tube for an OPC drum have been analyzed using a scanning microscopy(SEM) and an energy dispersive X-ray analyze.(EDX). The SEM/EDX system, which may provide good information on the surface defects and their distributions, provides an optical diameter of an impurity and a chemical composition. These are strongly related on the coated film thickness and quality of an OPC drum, which is a key element of a toner cartridge for a laser printer. The experimental results show that the local deformations, scratch wear, and flaws are produce the non-uniform coating layers, which may be removed by a manufacturing process of an aluminum tube. The major parameters on the coating quality of an OPC drum are the impurities of an aluminum tube such as silicon, oxygen, calcium, carbon, sulphur, chlorine, and others. These impurities may be removed by an ingot molding, extrusion and drawing, quality control, and packing processes with a strict manufacturing technology.

  • As part of IAEA CRP on "Compilation and evaluation of photonuclear data for applications", we evaluated photoproduction data of Mo, Zn, S and Cl isotopes for medical use and biological applications. Available experimental data were collected and their discrepancies were analyzed to select or reconstruct the representative data set. The photoabsorption cross sections were then evaluated tv applying the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) model for the energies below about 30 MeV and the quasi-deuteron model for energies below 140 MeV. The resulting representative photoabsorption data were given as input for the theoretical calculations for the emission process of light nuclei including neutron, proton, deuteron, triton, $^3He$, alpha particles and gamma rays by use of the Hauser-Feshbach and the preequilibrium model.

  • This research focused on the principle and the development of continuous regeneration DPF technology which was the best particulate matters removing technology of current existing technologies owing to its superior comparability and possible applicability. In addition, there were some discussions about the affecting engine parameters such as engine driving conditions and the amounts, velocity, temperature, pressure of exhaust emissions as well as sulfur contents and lubricants which were prerequisites to prevent poisoning effect on catalysts. The test was made on an 8000cc heavy-duty turbo diesel engine on which continuous regeneration DPF was in order to investigate regeneration characteristics of DPF and me performance under the condition of standard or 50ppm low sulphur diesel. Exhaust emissions, CO, HC, NOx PM were measured and compared under D-13 modes.

  • Needle coke is an important material for graphite electrodes. Delayed coking is used to produce needle coke. Producing good quality needle coke is not simple because it is a multi-parameter controlled process. Apart from that, it is important to understand the mechanism responsible for the delayed coking process, which involves mesophase formation and uniaxial rearrangement. Temperature and pressure need to be optimized for the different substances in every feedstock. Saturate hydrocarbon, aromatic, resin and asphaltene compounds are the main components in the delayed coking process for a low Coefficient Thermal Expansion value. In addition, heteroatoms, such as sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen and metal impurities, must be considered for a better graphitization process that prevents the puffing effect and produces better mesophase formation.

  • The volume electrical resistivity of $3.777{\times}10^{13}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of dried CSPE for 660~750 days after seawater & freshwater soaking is lower than $4.011{\times}10^{13}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of that before seawater soaking. The peak binding energy of oxygen and sulphur of CSPE after seawater & freshwater soaking are shifted above 1.0ev. The grass transition temperature($T_g$) of $-19.76^{\circ}C$ of seawater & freshwater soaked CSPE are lower than $-19.59^{\circ}C$ of that of non-soaked CSPE. The melting temperatures($T_m$) of seawater & freshwater soaked and non-soaked CSPE are $45.58^{\circ}C$ and $45.59^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • As conservation of global environment has becoming a major outstanding issue of the world, the International Maritime Organization(IMO) has been legislation a convention for prevention of air pollution from ships. By the new convention, use of air pollutants such as SOx, NOx, Freon and Halon Gas shall be restricted. In this regards, analysing these requirements of the convention is required as the convention will also be applied on restriction of discharging exhaust gases from ships by establishing a requirement of SOx and NOx discharged. The purposed of this study is as follows ; 1) Introducing of the backgrounds of legislating the convention for prevention of air pollution from ships and major contents of the convention and a countermeasures on the convention by Korea. 2) Reviewing by analyzing the influence on domestic industies concerned by restriction of SOx, NOx in exhaust gases and sulphur content of fuel oil. 3) Preparing a countermeasure on the convention properly.

  • Exhaust emissions in diesel engine are affected by fuel properties but the reason for this is not clear. Especially the recent strong interest in using low-grade fuel demands extensibe investigation in order to clarify the exhaust emissions. Bio-Diesel oil has a great possibility to solve the pollution problem caused by the exhaust gas from diesel engine vehicles. The use of bio-oils in diesel engines has received considerable atten-tion to the forseeable depletion of world oil supplies. So bio-diesel oil has been attracted with attentions for alternative and clean energy source. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the fea-sibility of the rice-bran oil for alternative fuel in a diesel engine with rgard to exhaust emis-sions.
