Al-hot Dipping Followed by High-Temperature Corrosion of Carbon Steels in Air and Ar-0.2%SO2 Gas

  • Al-rich coatings were prepared on hot rolled low carbon steel by hot dipping method in molten Al-bath to investigate the corrosion resistance with the possible outcomes and defects of aluminized coatings in air and $Ar-0.2%SO_2$ mixed gases. Coating microstructure was composed of an inner Al-Fe intermetallic layer and outer Al-rich layer. Aluminum oxidized preferentially to the thin, outer, protective ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ layer, without forming the nonprotective iron/sulfur-oxide layer after heating at $800^{\circ}C$ for 20h, in both the gases and provided the resistance against corrosion.

Effects of Sulfuric Acid Concentration and Alloying Elements on the Corrosion Resistance of Cu-bearing low Alloy Steels

  • During the process of sulfur dioxide removal, flue gas desulfurization equipment provides a serious internal corrosion environment in creating sulfuric acid dew point corrosion. Therefore, the utilities must use the excellent corrosion resistance of steel desulfurization facilities in the atmosphere. Until now, the trend in developing anti-sulfuric acid steels was essentially the addition of Cu, in order to improve the corrosion resistance. The experimental alloy used in this study is Fe-0.03C-1.0Mn-0.3Si-0.15Ni-0.31Cu alloys to which Ru, Zn and Ta were added. In order to investigate the effect of $H_2SO_4$ concentration and the alloying elements, chemical and electrochemical corrosion tests were performed. In a low concentration of $H_2SO_4$ solution, the major factor affecting the corrosion rate of low alloy steels was the exchange current density for $H^+/H_2$ reaction, while in a high concentration of $H_2SO_4$ solution, the major factors were the thin and dense passive film and resulting passivation behavior. The alloying elements reducing the exchange current density in low concentration of $H_2SO_4$, and the alloying elements decreasing the passive current density in high concentration of $H_2SO_4$, together play an important role in determining the corrosion rate of Cu-bearing low alloy steels in a wide range of $H_2SO_4$ solution.

  • 2010년대에 들어서 노후화된 공정으로 인하여 많은 공장들의 안전이 보장되지 않은 채로 가동되고 있다. 공정 및 설비의 노후화 문제를 근본적으로 해결하기는 어렵지만, 사전에 위험성 평가로 위험을 예방할 수있다. 본 연구는 CDU(Crude Distillation Unit)의 탈황 장비에 있는 배관에서 황으로 인한 부식을 타겟으로 지정하였고, API RP 581를 참고한 RBI(Risk Based Inspection)기법으로 위험성 평가를 실시하였다. RBI 기법은 Frequency와 Consequence의 조합으로 Risk를 표현하고, 이들을 바탕으로 Risk Matrix를 만든다. 본 연구는 배관의 Hole Size를 Small과 Medium으로, Frequency의 감도는 'Low'로 선택하여 진행하였다. 기준을 통해 만들어진 Risk Matrix를 참고하여 배관에서 황으로 인한 부식의 사고 위험성을 평가하고 향후 사고 방지 계획을 세울 수 있다. 또한 이와 비슷한 방법으로 노후화에 대한 예방을 한다면 보이지 않는 크고 작은 사고들도 예방 할 수 있다.

  • Fossil fired power plant produces the electric energy by using a thermal energy by the combustion of fossil fuels as like oil, gas and coal. The exhausted flue gas by the combustion of oil etc. contains usually many contaminated species, and especially sulfur-content has been controlled strictly and then FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) facility should be installed in every fossil fired power plant. To minimize the content of contaminations in final exhaust gas, high corrosive environment including sulfuric acid (it was formed during the process which $SO_2$ gas combined with $Mg(OH)_2$ solution) can be formed in cooling zone of FGD facility and severe corrosion damage is reported in this zone. These conditions are formed when duct materials are immersed in fluid that flows on the duct floors or when exhausted gas is condensed into thin layered medium and contacts with materials of the duct walls and roofs. These environments make troublesome corrosion and air pollution problems that are occurred from the leakage of those ducts. The frequent shut down and repairing works of the FGD systems also demand costs and low efficiencies of those facilities. In general, high corrosion resistant materials have been used to solve this problem. However, corrosion problems have severely occurred in a cooling zone even though high corrosion resistant materials were used. In this work, a new technology has been proposed to solve the corrosion problem in the cooling zone of FGD facility. This electrochemical protection system contains cathodic protection method and protection by coating film, and remote monitoring-control system.

  • 한반도의 근해는 다양한 해양변화가 있으며, 작전을 수행하는 해군함정, 함재기, 해상운용 비행기, 공군의 전투기, 해안에 위치한 공항 및 비행장 등이 영향을 받는다. 특히 해양환경의 직접적인 영향인 염분은 가스터빈엔진과 같이 고온/고속으로 운용되는 장비에 연료의 황성분과 화학적 변화로 고온부식(Hot Corrosion)이 발생시킨다. 한계값으로 정의 할 수 없지만 염분에 의한 부식은 디미스터(공기흡입구) 높이가 7m 이하일 경우 해상에서 유입되는 염분이 증가하여 부식이 급격하게 증가하였다. 또한 서해보다 동해에서 작전임무를 수행하는 무기체계는 염분도, 풍량, 파고에 의해 비산되는 염분이 상대적으로 많아 부식율이 17% 증가함을 확인하였다. 해상에서 가스터빈엔진을 운용하는 해상무기체계는 염분유입을 최소화하기 위해 해상으로부터 13m이상에서 운용되어야 급격한 고온부식을 최소화 될 것으로 본다.

Corrosion of Selected Materials in Boiling Sulfuric Acid for the Nuclear Power Industries

  • Iodine sulfur (IS) process is one of the promising processes for a hydrogen production by using a high temperature heat generated by a very high temperature gas cooled reactor(VHTR) in the nuclear power industries. Even though the IS process is very efficient for a hydrogen production and it is not accompanied by a carbon dioxide evolution, the highly corrosive environment of the process limits its application in the industry. Corrosion tests of selected materials were performed in sulfuric acid to select appropriate materials compatible with the IS process. The materials used in this work were Fe-Cr alloys, Fe-Ni-Cr alloys, Fe-Si alloys, Ni base alloys, Ta, Ti, Zr, SiC, Fe-Si, etc. The test environments were 50 wt% sulfuric acid at $120^{\circ}C$ and 98 wt% at $320^{\circ}C$. Corrosion rates were measured by using a weight change after an immersion. The surface morphologies and cross sectional areas of the corroded materials were examined by using SEM equipped with EDS. Corrosion behaviors of the materials were discussed in terms of the chemical composition of the materials, a weight loss, the corrosion morphology, the precipitates in the microstructure and the surface layer composition.

지역난방 냉각수 배관의 용접부 파손 분석 (Failure Analysis of Welded type 304 in Cooling Water Pipeline of District Heating System)

  • Failure analysis on the welded type 304 pipe used for cooling water piping in the district heating primary side was conducted. Inorganic elements and bacteria in the cooling water and in corrosion products were analyzed, and the weldment was inspected by microscopy and a sensitization test. Corrosion damages were observed in the heat-affected zone, on weld defects such as incomplete fusion or excessive penetration caused by improper welding, or/and at the 6 o'clock position along the pipe axial direction. However, the level of concentration of chloride in the cooling water as low as 80 ppm has been reported to be not enough for even a sensitized type 304 steel, meaning that the additional corrosive factor was required for these corrosion damages. The factor leading to these corrosion damages was drawn to be the metabolisms of the types of bacteria, which is proved by the detection of proton, sulfur containing species, biofilms, and both bacteria and corrosion product analyses.

Corrosion of Dental Au-Ag-Cu-Pd Alloys in 0.9 % Sodium Chloride Solution

  • Two Au-Ag-Cu-Pd dental casting alloys (Au:12% and 20%) used. The test solutions used 0.9 % NaCl solution (isotonic sodium chloride solution), 0.9 % NaCl solution containing 1 % lactic acid, and 0.9 % NaCl solution containing 1 % lactic acid and 0.1 mol $dm^{-3}$ $Na_2S$. The surface of two samples in three sample solutions was not natural discoloration during one year. The alloy containing 12 % gold was easily alloyed and the composition was uniform comparing with the alloy containing 20 % gold. The rest potentials have not a little effect after three months. The kinds of metals could not definitely from the oxidation and reduction waves of metal on the cyclic voltammograms. The dissolutions of gold and palladium were 12 % Au sample in the 0.9 % NaCl solution containing 1 % lactic acid and 0.1 mol $dm^{-3}$ $Na_{2}S$. The pH of solution had an affect on dissolution of copper, and sulfur ion had an affect on dissolution of silver. The copper dissolved amount from 20 % gold sample was about 26 times comparing with that of 12 % gold sample in the 0.9 % solution containing 1 % lactic acid. Corrosion products were silver chloride and copper chloride in NaCl solution, and silver sulfide and copper sulfide in NaCl solution containing $Na_{2}S$.

  • Fe-(8.5, 18.5, 28.3, 36.9) wt% Cr alloys were corroded between 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ for up to 70 h in a 1 atm gas mixture that consisted of 0.0242 atm of $H_2S$, 0.031 atm of water vapor, and 0.9448 atm of nitrogen gas. Their corrosion resistance increased with an increment in the Cr content. The Fe-8.5%Cr alloy corroded fast, forming thick, fragile, nonadherent scales that consisted primarily of an outer FeS layer and an inner (Fe, Cr, O, S)-mixed layer. The outer FeS layer grew into the air by the outward diffusion of $Fe^{2+}$ ions, whereas the inner mixed layer grew by the inward diffusion of oxygen and sulfur ions. At the interface of the outer and inner scales, voids developed and cracking occurred. The Fe-(18.5, 28.3, 36.9)% Cr alloys displayed much better corrosion resistance than the Fe-8.5Cr alloy, because thin $Cr_2O_3$ or $Cr_2S_3$ scales formed.
