  • Chlorophyll mutants were produced by treating the rhizome of Cymbidium kanran with mutagen, EMS(ethyl methan sulfonate). The germination ratio of Cymbidium kanran seeds was 5.5 times higher when the seeds were treated with ultrasonic treatment for 20 minutes than untreated control. Fifty to sixty percent of the rhizomes became dark brown when they were cultured in a liquid growth medium containing 0.2% EMS for three weeks. When the dark-brown rhizomes were cultured in a solified MS medium, new rhizomes were developed from a part of the old ones. Chlorophyll mutant rhizomes were obtained from a meristem tissue by a subculturing the cuts of these new rhizomes for a year. Of the chlorophyll mutants, a zigzag-striped type of rhizome was dominant and light-yellow and albino ones were also produced. While the zigzag-striped type rhizomes were differentiated into green and striped plant, the light yellow and the white rhizomes produced yellow-striped and albino plants repectively. These results indicate that the EMS treatment on the rhizome is an effective means to induce a chlorophyll mutant. We believe that this method may be useful to produce variegated plants chlorophyll mutants from other orchids.

  • In preparing void latex particles by emulsion polymerization, the weight mean particle size of which is ranged $0.3{\mu}m{\sim}1.5{\mu}m$, reaction parameters were investigated in order to elucidate their effects on the size distribution and the solid content of emulsion polymer. Experimental results showed that the weight mean particle size of hydrophillic core polymer was reduced as the concentration of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDS) increased. The size of void polymethyl-methacrylate-polystyrene composite latex particles became larger as the concentration of styrene monomer and the sodium persulfate increased. However, the size of void latex particles was reduced as the feeding rate of acrylic acid increased. The solid content of emulsion polymer was strongly dependent on the addition of stylene monomer. By increasing the concentration of styrene monomer the solid content of emulsion polymer increased linearly.

  • We successfully coated poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT : PSS) on CVD graphene by adding poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to PEDOT : PSS. Extensive studies on the wettability of coating solutions and electrical properties of formed films led us to conclude that PVA with 89% of the degree of saponification and the molecular weight of less than $100,000gmol^{-1}$ produced optimum results. Furthermore, the optimum content of PVA was found to be 5% of PEDOT : PSS by the solid weight. The film coated by PEDOT : PSS with PVA on CVD graphene displayed a conspicuous improvement in the surface roughness, adhesive property, bending durability and stability in resistance at $160^{\circ}C$, compared to those of using CVD graphene films.

  • Elastic resistive pressure sensor is fabricated by a direct spray coating of silver nanowires (AgNWs) on uncured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and an additional coating of a conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). To improve the sensitive and stability, we have fabricated sandwich-structured AgNW/polymer sensor where two AgNW/polymer-coated PDMS films are laminated with the conducting surfaces contacted by pressure lamination. It shows a resistance decrease upon loading due to the formation of dense network of AgNWs. It is demonstrated that the sandwich-structured AgNW/polymer sensor exhibits very high sensitivity ($2.59kPa^{-1}$) and gauge factor (37.8) in the low pressure regime. It can also detect a subtle placement and removal of a weight as low as 3.4 mg, the corresponding pressure of which is about 5.4 Pa. It is shown that the protrusion of AgNWs from PDMS is suppressed substantially by the over-coated PEDOT:PSS layer, thereby reducing hysteresis and rendering the sensor more stable.

  • We report on stretchable electrochromic films of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) fabricated on silver nanowire (AgNW) electrodes. AgNWs electrodes are prepared on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates using a spray coater for stretchable electrochromic applications. On top of the AgNW electrode, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is introduced to ensure a stable resistance over the electrode under broad strain range by effectively suppressing the protrusion of AgNWs from PDMS. This bilayer electrode exhibits a high performance as a stretchable substrate in terms of sheet resistance increment by a factor of 1.6, tensile strain change to 40 %, and stretching cycles to 100 cycles. Furthermore, P3HT film spin-coated on the bilayer electrode shows a stable electrochromic coloration within an applied voltage, with a color contrast of 28.6 %, response time of 4-5 sec, and a coloration efficiency of $91.0cm^2/C$. These findings indicate that AgNWs/PEDOT:PSS bilayer on PDMS substrate electrode is highly suitable for transparent and stretchable electrochromic devices.

  • This study was carried out to monitor the level of 17 perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) present in liquid milk products sold on the Korean market. The liquid milk samples were extracted via liquid-liquid extraction and analyzed by LC-MS/MS. Excellent linearity over the calibration range (r2>0.99), and the limit of quantification of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was 0.021 ng/g, and perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PFOA) was 0.057 ng/g. The accuracy was in the range of 72.5-115.3%, and the precision was under 20%. The preprocessing method for this experiment is considered appropriate for analysis of milk samples. The proposed analytical method was applied for the determination of PFCs in 98 liquid milk product samples, and the average content of total PFCs was 0.6576 ng/mL. PFOA and PFOS were detected in most samples, and their levels were less than 0.1 ng/mL, which was lower than those in other studies.

  • The approximate rates and stoichiometry of the reaction of excess sodium diethyldihydroaluminate (SDDA) with 68 selected organic compounds containing representative functional groups were examined under standard conditions (THF-toluene, $0^{\circ}C$ in order to compare its reducing characteristics with lithium aluminum hydride (LAH), aluminum hydride, and diisobutylaluminum hydride (DIBAH) previously examined, and enlarge the scope of its applicability as a reducing agent. Alcohols, phenol, thiols and amines evolve hydrogen rapidly and quantitatively. Aldehydes and ketones of diverse structure are reduced rapidly to the corresponding alcohols. Reduction of norcamphor gives 11% exo-and 89% endo-norborneol. Conjugated aldehydes such as cinnamaldehyde are rapidly and cleanly reduced to the corresponding allylic alcohols. p-Benzoquinone is mainly reduced to hydroquinone. Hexanoic acid and benzoic acid liberate hydrogen rapidly and quantitatively, however reduction proceeds very slowly. Acid chlorides and esters tested are all reduced rapidly to the corresponding alcohols. However cyclic acid anhydrides such as succinic anhydride are reduced to the lactone stage rapidly, but very slowly thereafter. Although alkyl chlorides are reduced very slowly alkyl bromides, alkyl iodides and epoxides are reduced rapidly with an uptake of 1 equiv of hydride. Styrene oxide is reduced to give 1-phenylethanol quantitatively. Primary amides are reduced very slowly; however, tertiary amides take up 1 equiv of hydride rapidly. Tertiary amides could be reduced to the corresponding aldehydes in very good yield ( > 90%) by reacting with equimolar SDDA at room temperature. Hexanenitrile is reduced moderately accompanying 0.6 equiv of hydrogen evolution, however the reduction of benzonitrile proceeds rapidly to the imine stage and very slowly thereafter. Benzonitrile was reduced to give 90% yield of benzaldehyde by reaction with 1.1 equiv of hydride. Nitro compounds, azobenzene and azoxybenzene are reduced moderately at $0^{\circ}C$, but nitrobenzene is rapidly reduced to hydrazobenzene stage at room temperature. Cyclohexanone oxime is reduced to the hydroxylamine stage in 12 h and no further reaction is apparent. Pyridine is reduced sluggishly at $0^{\circ}C$, but moderately at room temperature to 1,2-dihydropyridine stage in 6 h; however further reaction is very slow. Disulfides and sulfoxides are reduced rapidly, whereas sulfide, sulfone, sulfonic acid and sulfonate are inert under these reaction conditions.

  • High-quality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were synthesized by catalytic decomposition of $C_2H_2$ using Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst at $800^{\circ}C$. The as-synthesized SWCNTs typically occurred in the form of a bundle with a diameter of 10~20 nm together with amorphous carbon and catalytic impurities, which were removed by a two-step purification process consisting of oxidation and an acid treatment. The oxidation step, using an $O_2$-Ar mixture at $380^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr in a vertical-type furnace and a $HNO_3$ treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ for one hour, was utilized to remove the amorphous carbon particles. Subsequently, metallic catalysts were removed in HCl at room temperature for 5 hr under magnetic stirring. The SWCNT suspension was prepared by dispersing the purified SWCNTs in an aqueous sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate solution with horn-type sonication. This was then air-sprayed on glass to fabricate CNT field emitters. The samples had a turn-on field value of 4 V/${\mu}m$ and a current density of 0.67 mA/$cm^2$ at 9 V/${\mu}m$. Increasing the HCl treatment time improved the field emission properties.

  • Concentrations of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were measured in seawater, sediment, and biota collected from Gunsan coast, Korea to investigate their occurrence, distribution, and risk of exposure to humans through seafood consumption. The total concentrations of PFASs in seawater, sediment, and biota ranged from 5.97 to 74.9 ng/L, 0.01 to 13.3 ng/g dry weight, and 0.02 to 5.73 ng/g wet weight, respectively. Predominant PFAS compounds differed across matrices, indicating that the distribution of PFASs in multiple environmental samples is governed by their carbon-chain length. The concentrations of PFASs in seawater were significantly negatively correlated with salinity (P<0.01), suggesting terrestrial input (including land-used PFASs) as the major source of PFAS contamination in coastal environments. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) through seafood consumption were 0.05 and 0.06 ng/kg body weight/day, respectively. The EDIs of PFOA and PFOS measured in this study were lower those the proposed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Canada guidelines, indicating limited health risk for Korean population from PFASs through consumption of seafood from Gunsan coastal environment.

  • In this study, Korean Hallabong produced in Jeju Island and coffee were grafted to prepare coffee containing Hallabong extract and the nutritional components were analyzed. As the amount of Hallabong extract increased, the water content and total polyphenol content increased. However, the crude flour, crude protein, and total flavonoid content decreased significantly. The selenium content per 100 g was 91.28 mg in the 1% Hallabong group, and the iron content was 6.84 mg in the 3% Hallabong group. As the content of Hallabong extract in coffee increased, the L-value (brightness) and b-value (yellowness) increased, but the a-value (redness) showed a tendency to decrease. In the case of DPPH(2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity, the group containing 9% of Hallabong extract showed the highest value at 47.20 μmol/g of TEAC. In particular, the ABTS(2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate)) and DPPH radical scavenging activity were significantly increased from coffee powder containing 6% or more of Hallabong extract(p<0.05). The caffeine content decreased as the amount of Hallabong extract added to coffee increased. Therefore, when making powder coffee with Hallabong extract added, it is recommended to set the content of Hallabong extract to 6%.
