Sulfate anion which cause concrete degradation is affected on marine structures. There are two of control method concrete degradation which is arisen by sulfate anion. Cementitious materials prevent permeation of sulfate anion and water-binder ratio increase to improve watertightness. But, those methods are passive. So, this study is developing new materials which prevent actively concrete degradation on sulfate anion.

The Mechanistic model, considering expansion stress, coefficient of diffusion etc. to time, is applied to predict the deterioration of concrete structures of the nuclear power plant(NPP) due to sulfate attack. Mix design for the test was three kinds of specified compressive strength 385, 280 and $210kgf/cm^2$ which are used to construct NPPs and cement was type I and V. The immersion test was performed with 10% $Na_2SO_4$ solution to cement type and strength for a year. The coefficient of diffusion on each concrete mix is calculated based on the results of immersion test, and it is used for predicting the sulfate attack of the concrete structures of NPP. The coefficient of diffusion of the target concrete ranged $0.5763{\sim}3.9002{\times}10^{-12}m^2/sec.$, and the sulfate attack rate of concrete structures of the NPP was predicted as 0.1~7.1 mm/year.
This paper uses modelling and experiment to perform a quantitative analysis for the gypsum and ettringite formations in cement pastes subjected to sulfate attack. Firstly, based on Fick's law and chemical reaction kinetics, a diffusion model of sulfate ions in cement pastes is proposed, and then the model of the gypsum and ettringite formations is established to analyze its contents in cement pastes with corrosion time. Secondly, the corrosion experiment of the specimens with cement pastes immersed into 2.5%, 5.0% and 10.0% $Na_2SO_4$ solutions are carried out, and by using XRD-Rietveld method, the phases of powder samples from the specimens are quantitatively analyzed to obtain the contents of gypsum and ettringite in different surface depth, solution concentration and corrosion time. Finally, the contents of gypsum and ettringite calculated by the models are compared with the results from the XRD experiments, and then the effects of surface depth, corrosion time and solution concentration on the gypsum and ettringite formations in cement pastes are discussed.

An objective of this experimental research is to investigate the diffusion characteristics for chloride ion of concrete subjected to sulfate attack. For this purpose, concretes with three types of cement such as ordinary portland cement(OPC), binary blended cement(BBC), and ternary blended cement(TBC) containing mineral admixtures were made for water-binder ratios of 32% and 43%. The concrete specimens were immersed in sulfate solution for 365 days, and then the resistance against chloride ion penetration of them were estimated by using NT BUILD 492. It was observed from the test results that the resistance to chloride ion penetration of concrete subjected to sulfate attack was greatly decreased than that of standard curing concrete under the same age.

The consequence of sulfate attack on geopolymer concrete, made from an alkali activated natural pozzolan (AANP) has been studied in this paper. Changes in the compressive strength, expansion and capillary water absorption of specimens have been investigated combined with phases determination by means of X-ray diffraction. At the end of present investigation which was to evaluate the performance of natural alumina silica based geopolymer concrete in sodium and magnesium sulfate solution, the loss of compressive strength and percentage of expansion of AANP concrete was recorded up to 19.4 % and 0.074, respectively.

The objective of this work is to understand the deterioration mode of ordinary portland cement pastes and mortars immersed in 5% sodium sulfate solution for 510 days. In order to achieve the goal, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are presented in this experimental work. Strength deterioration (SDF) and length change of the mortars were also measured to evaluate resistances to the attacking solution. The mortars were prepared by using water-cement ratio of 35%, 45% and 55%, respectively, and the water-cement ratio of pastes was fixed at 45%. Conclusively, the deterioration by sodium sulfate attack was primarily due to the formation of ettringite and thaumasite. This process of deterioration may submit the reasonable understanding on the sulfate attack mechanism of hardened cement pastes, mortars, and concretes.

In case of constructing the concrete structures under seawater environment, the concrete suffers from deterioration due to penetration of various ions such as chloride, sulfate and magnesium in seawater. Tn the present study, Immersion tests with artificial seawater were carried out to investigate the resistance to seawater attack of antiwashout underwater concrete. From the results of compressive strength, it was found that blended cement concrete due to mineral admixtures such as fly ash(FA) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag(SGC), were superior to ordinary portland cement concrete with respect to the resistance to seawater attack. Moreover, XRD analysis indicated that the formed reactants of ordinary portland cement paste by sulfate and magnesium ions led to the deterioration of concrete. As expected, however, the blended cements with FA or SGC have a good resistance to seawater attack. This paper would discuss the mechanism of seawater deterioration and benefical effects of antiwashout underwater concretes with mineral admixtures.

The development and the main features of an expert system for modeling the requirements of durable concrete in chemical exposure, called the Durable Concrete Advisor for Chemical Exposure (DCACE), are described. The system was developed to help improve the quality of concrete exposed to chemical environment by minimizing mistakes and deficiencies in selecting concrete constituents. Using Kappa-PC expert system shell, an object-oriented model was developed where the rule-based reasoning operates on or across objects. The American Concrete Institute manual of concrete practice was chosen as the main source of knowledge. Other textual sources were also consulted for knowledge acquisition. The major objectives of the research were acquisition and formalization of the relevant knowledge and building an expert system for making durable concrete for chemical exposure regarding sulfate attack, acid attack, seawater attack and carbonation. Similar to most expert systems, this system has explanation facilities, can be incrementally expanded, and has an easy to understand knowledge base. The performance of the system is demonstrated by an example session. The system is user-friendly and can be used as an educational tool.

A lot of reinforced concrete (RC) structures in Syria went out of service after a few years of construction. This was mainly due to reinforcement corrosion or chemical attack on concrete. The use of blended cements is growing rapidly in the construction industry due to economical, ecological and technical benefits. Syria is relatively rich in scoria. In the study, mortar/concrete specimens were produced with seven types of cement: one plain Portland cement (control) and six blended cements with replacement levels ranging from 10 to 35 %. Rapid chloride penetration test was carried in accordance with ASTM C 1202 after two curing times of 28 and 90 days. The effect on the resistance of concrete against damage caused by corrosion of the embedded steel has been investigated using an accelerated corrosion test by impressing a constant anodic potential. The variation of current with time and time to failure of RC specimens were determined at 28 and 90 days curing. In addition, effects of aggressive acidic environments on mortars were investigated through 100 days of exposure to 5 % $H_2SO_4$, 10 % HCl, 5 % $HNO_3$ and 10 % $CH_3COOH$ solutions. Evaluation of sulfate resistance of mortars was also performed by immersing in 5 % $Na_2SO_4$ solution for 52 weeks. Test results reveal that the resistance to chloride penetration of concrete improves substantially with the increase of replacement level, and the concretes containing scoria based-blended cements, especially CEM II/B-P, exhibited corrosion initiation periods several times longer than the control mix. Further, an increase in scoria addition improves the acid resistance of mortar, especially in the early days of exposure, whereas after a long period of continuous exposure all specimens show the same behavior against the acid attack. According to results of sulfate resistance, CEM II/B-P can be used instead of SRPC in sulfate-bearing environments.
