Objective: The aim of the present study is to assess the prevalence and related risk factors of suicide ideation among middle and high school students in an urban area. Methods: We surveyed 3,691 middle and high school students (2,159 male, 1,532 female, 11-19 years of age) using a self-report questionnaire that covered basic socio-demographic data, academic achievements, presence of physical or psychiatric illness, sleep duration on weekdays, time spent at private academies on weekdays and weekends, and subjective needs for counseling. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Reynolds' Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) were included in the survey. Results: The prevalence of students with high suicide ideation ($SIQ{\geq}62$) was 4.6%. In a logistic regression model, female sex (p = 0.002), younger age (p < 0.001), poor academic achievement (p = 0.043) and higher score of BDI (p < 0.001) were associated with a higher SIQ score. In addition, younger age (p = 0.045) and a higher BDI score (p < 0.001) were associated with a higher SIQ score adolescents having high suicide ideation ($SIQ{\geq}62$). Conclusion: Related risk factors of suicide ideation in adolescents were female sex, younger age, poor academic achievement, and a depressive mood. It would be especially helpful to pay more attention to younger adolescents and a depressive mood as a high-risk group. The understanding of these factors will be helpful for providing an effective suicide screening and prevention program for adolescents.
Purpose. The purposes of this study were 1) to examine the differences in suicidal ideation and psychological variables by gender, 2) compare the contribution of demographic-behavioral variables and psychosocial variables in explaining the variance in suicidal ideation, and 3) identify the most important predictors of suicidal ideation for male adolescents and female adolescents. Methods. The subjects consisted of 271 male adolescents and 230 female adolescents. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires, which were constructed to include SSI-C, DEP subscale of the SCL-90-R, PACI, and SWLS. The data were analyzed by the SPSS/WIN program. Results. Suicidal ideation differed by gender. Depression and family communication differed by gender. The unique contribution of demographic-behavioral variables and psychosocial variables in explaining the variance in suicidal ideation differed between male adolescents and female adolescents. The significant predictors of suicidal ideation for male adolescents were life satisfaction, depression, and family communication, explaining $28\%$ of the variance in suicidal ideation. The significant predictors of suicidal ideation for female adolescents were depression, smoking, and life satisfaction, explaining $38\%$ of the variance in suicidal ideation. Conclusion. The findings of this study suggest that the approach to effective suicide prevention program for adolescents should consider gender differences.

This study was performed to determine the factors related to suicide ideation among some middle school students. A self-administered questionnaires survey was administered to 975 middle school students in Gyeongin area during the period from May 1st to June 30th, 2013. As a result, the suicide ideation of respondents turned out to be significantly higher in the following groups: females, experience of smoking, experience of alcohol drinking, of which the self-recognized body type was fatty, with out regular eating, poor subjective health status, poor home atmosphere, low family life satisfaction, lower school grade, poor relationship with friends, school violence experienced, school life dissatisfaction, severe hopelessness, severe distress, and depression. In particular, the factors related to hopelessness are strongly correlated with the suicide ideation.
The main object of the study is to investigate factors affecting the suicide ideation. According to the socioemotional selectivity theory, because of limitation of life time, the family relationship is more important for elderly than young or middle aged group. Based on this theory authors hypothesizes that the familism may show negative relationship with suicide ideation only in elderly group. The data for the study comes from the survey titled understanding on the successful aging of Korean people conducted in 2008. The sample size of the survey is 1,000 and the survey was conducted by the face to face interview with the standardized questionnaire. According to the analysis, familism shows negative relationship with suicide ideation only in elderly group, not in young or middle adult group.
This study was conducted to identify and compare the stressors and coping behaviors of high school students who experienced suicidal ideation vs those who do not. Method: The data were collected from 1,441 high school students living in the middle region of Korea. Researchers collected the data using Adolescent Stress Inventory and Adolescent Coping questionnare from February to May of 1999. Data were analyzed using X2, T-test. Result: A significant proportion (31.9%) of subjects had thought about suicide during the past 6 months, 297 girls (35.3%) and 163 boys (27.2%). Major stressors of subjects who experienced suicidal ideation were academic problems, conflicts between family members, and changes in sleeping or eating patterns. Conflicts with family members contributed to have suicidal ideation. There was no significant difference in helpful coping behaviors between the two groups. The group who experienced suicidal ideation had lower scores and fewer coping behaviors. Boys perceived more stressors and had fewer helpful coping behaviors than girls. Conclusion: It is necessary to develope school-based suicide prevention programs. Our findings suggest that the program should focus on problems related to studying and conflicts within the family.
This paper designed a mediating pathways model on how parental abuse and peer victimization lead to the development of suicidal ideation through the mediating variables of interpersonal needs and a hopelessness. The development is sure to help reduce adolescent suicidal ideation and, in turn, seek for distinct mediating methods to help teens with suicidal ideas. To validate the suggested model, this paper administered a questionnaire to 768 students in their 10th, 11th and 12th grades of high schools in Incheon, and then analyzed the structural equation model before confirming the research hypothesis by adopting the tools of SPSS 17.0 and AMOS 18.0. The result clearly demonstrates that parental abuse is one of the most influential factors in developing suicidal ideation. Peer victimization, however, had no direct bearing on suicide ideation, only indirectly affecting through the mediating variable of interpersonal needs. In addition, peer victimization had indirect effects on suicidal ideation through a sequential intervention of variables from interpersonal needs to a hopelessness. Based on the above results, this research has following implications: First, this paper analyzed the mediating pathways of youth suicidal ideation resulting from parental abuse and peer victimization. The result could possibly help find preventive measures and effective mediating approaches to save the lives of young people at risk of committing suicide. Secondly, this study proved that the interpersonal needs, a relatively new concept hardly introduced in previous studies, is a significant predictive factor for suicide ideation, serving as an intervening variable of developing suicidal ideation among young people who have suffered parental abuse and peer victimization.
Objectives: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among young adults. We investigated whether anxiety level and sleep quality were related to suicide ideation among university students. Methods: Questionnaires were distributed to 1094 students at a local college. The scale for suicide Ideation, the Hospital Anxiety-Depression scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Morningness-eveningness questionnaires were used. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between these variables and suicide ideation. Results: Among the 292 students who answered the suicide ideation questionnaire, 31 students had a high suicide ideation score and 261 patients had a low suicide ideation score. Demographic variables that showed significant differences between the two groups were gender, exercise, chronotype, sleep quality, depression and anxiety. The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that suicidal ideation increased as the level of sleep quality decreased. There was no significant relationship between depression and suicidal ideation. Another multiple linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between sleep quality sleep related factors. This suggested the quality of sleep decreased as weekend oversleep increased. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that when anxiety was higher and the quality of sleep was lower, the more suicide ideation increased. Therefore, improving sleep quality and reducing anxiety are important strategies for reducing suicidal ideation.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between suicidal behavior and patterns of alcohol consumption in Korean adults. Methods: This study was based on data provided by the Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey from 2007 to 2011. A total of 42 347 subjects were included in the study, of whom 19 292 were male and 23 055 were female. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between patterns of alcohol consumption and suicidal behavior. Results: Among the study subjects, 1426 males (11.3%) and 3599 females (21.2%) had experienced suicidal ideation, and 106 males (0.8%) and 190 females (1.1%) had attempted suicide during the previous 12 months. Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AU-DIT) scores were found to be associated with suicidal ideation in males and associated with both suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in females. Alcoholic blackouts were associated with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in males, and were also associated with suicidal ideation in females. Conclusions: In this study, we found that certain patterns of alcohol consumption were associated with suicidal behaviors. In particular, only alcoholic blackouts and categorized AUDIT scores were found to be associated with suicidal behavior in males. We therefore suggest that further research is needed to examine this relationship prospectively and in other settings.
A Convergence study was attempted to identify the effects of stress on Suicidal ideation and mediating effects of depression in the relationship. The study were 166 elderly's over 65 years at G city and period was from August 29 to September 9, 2018. Data were analyzed PASW 18.0 program. As a result, stress had a significant effect on depression in stage 1, stress had a significant effect on suicide ideation in stage 2, stress and depression of parameter were significant predictors in stage 3. The explanatory power of the two variables was 24.3% in stress, 26.8% for stress accompanied with depression, and the partial mediating effect of depression on the effect of stress on suicide ideation. Based on this study, it can be used as a basic data for reducing suicide ideation of the elderly and study is needed to develop suicide prevention programs.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find out the suicide ideation of high school students in urban and rural areas, and especially to research the relationship between suicide ideation, and general characteristics, characteristics of school life, and empirical characteristics of suicide. Methods: This research targeted four urban and four rural high schools in two cities. The study subjects were 1,114 students in urban area and 968 students in rural area, total 2,082 students. The survey was conducted from July 1, 2009 to July 31, 2009. For statistical analysis, chi-square test, t-test and ANOVA were used for investigating related factors with suicide ideation in urban and rural areas, respectively, with multiple logistic regression for multivariate analysis. Results: The results showed that 38.8% of respondents had suicide ideation within 1 year. The percentage of female students (44.8%) was significantly higher than that of male students (33.4%). However, there was no significant difference between urban (38.0%) and rural area (39.9%). The significant influencing factors on suicide ideation in multiple logistic regression were gender [female student OR(odds ratio)=1.80 (95% CI 1.31-2.47) compared with male student] and grade [second year OR=1.40 (95% CI 0.98-2.00), third year OR=2.15 (95% CI 1.49-3.12) compared with first year] in urban area. Those in rural area were gender [female student OR(odds ratio)=2.71 (95% CI 1.23-2.38) compared with male student], economic deterioration [yes OR=1.81 (95% CI 1.24-2.64) compared with no], and grade [second year OR=2.80 (95% CI 1.82-4.32), third year OR=3.84 (95% CI 2.52-5.87) compared with first year]. Conclusions: This study showed about 40% of high school students had suicide ideation within 1 year. A suicide prevention program may be implemented considering factors related with suicide ideation identified in this study.
