  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the grazing performance of dairy cattle for winter rye, sorghum-sudangrass hybrid and oat including of rape in Hwa seong-gun, Kyeonggido, from 1993 to 1994. Each crops were utilized from the stage of 8-leaves to late blooming for sorghum-sudangrass, and from final leaves to soft dough for winter rye and oat plant. Under three different cropping system of winter rye-sorghum x sudangrass, spring oat-sorghum X sudangrass-autumn oat, and silage corn-autumn oat, a succeshl hehage production was available for grazing performance from April 26 to December 15, continuously. Annual dry matter yields for grazing allowance were 26.1 tontha in average of all cropping system. Autumn oat rnixtured with rape showed the highest herbage utilization with 91.6% grazing intensity and the lowest in sorghum-sudangrass with a value of 60.6- 69.1 %. Labor investment for herbage production were 805 hour in the cutting management and 339 hour per hectar in the grazing utilization.

  • Field experiment was carried out to study the new and old leaf development and photosynthesis of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid 855F, pearl millet Suwon No.6 and barnyard millet in cutting and non-cutting plots from the 2nd cutting day(September, 17th). Leaf regrowth of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid and pearl millet begun after the 2nd cutting day, except barnyard millet. Photosynthetic rate of new leaf blades in cutting plots reached to higher level than old leaf at 12th to 20th day after cutting(DAC). Stomatal density of leaf blade of each crop in non-cutting plot was observed higher pearl millet and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid than barnyard millet. New leaf blade of each crop in cutting plot was showed complete development in stomata size, form and vascular bundles in 12th DAC. Non-structural carbohydrates(NSC) contents of stembase in sorghum-sudan hybrid which had 17 %, the highest among three forages decreased daily into 8th DAC and begun to increase from 20th DAC. But, those of pearl millet and barnyard millet in cutting plots were about 10 % at cutting day and inclined to decrease continuously into the 20th DAC and reached about 3~4% in 32nd DAC. These results showed that regrowth energy of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid was mainly dependent on non-structural carbohydrates of stembase until 12th DAC, but pearl millet had active lower leaves supported its regrowth by concurrent photosynthesis. As barnyard millet which did not reserve enough NSC, its regrowth fail to survive under low temperature. Also, late regrowth of rest two forage crops was delayed with decreasing daily temperature after mid-September.

  • Forage productivity of Job's tears (Coix lachryma-jobi L.) and adlay (C. lachryma-jobi var. mayuen (ROMAN.) STAPF) and a hybrid corn (Kwangog) and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Pioneer 988) was compared in the southern part of Korea where black streaked dwarf virus' (BSDV) is prevalent. Emergence of Job's tears and adlay was more delayed compared to a corn or sorghum-sudangrass hybrid under the drought field conditions. Early growth and regrowth of Job's tears and adlay were less than those of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. Fresh weight, dry weight, and digestible dry matter of Job's tears and adlay cut once approximately 40 days after flowering were much higher than those of two cuts at every flowering stage. Dry weight of one-cut Job's tears and ad lay harvested 40 days after flowering was similar to the total dry weight of three-cut sorghum-sudangrass hybrid but higher than that of silage corn. Digestible dry matter production was greater in the order of sorghum-sudangrass, corn, one-cut and two-cut Job's tears and adlay. Corn was severely infected with BSDV, but digestible dry matter was relatively high due to its higher in vitro dry matter digestibility. Among the Job's tears and adlay varieties, a variety of Job's tears with globular fruit shape was best for forage production due to its taller plant height, thick stem, wider leaf blades, higher leaf blade/total dry weight ratio, and higher forage yield. However, hulled grain yield of ad lay varieties was higher than that of Job's tears due to a higher hulled/rough grain ratio although they had similar rough grain yields.

  • A field experiment with 200, 400 and $600kg{\cdot}N/ha/year$ application levels was carried out to study the nitrate nitrogen accumulation and forage yield of sorghum sudangrass hybrid(Xtragraze II) at Iksan College Farm in 1995. The nitrate nitrogen contents were increased by the application of nitrogen and decreased as the plant matured, then the accumulation of nitrate nitrogen started from 200kg application, and exceeded the safe level of ruminants at the level of 400kg application during the whole growing period. In the early stage of growth, nitrate nitrogen contents of sorghum sudangrass hybrid were increased by rainfall during the dry season, but these contents are almost kept constantly at the low level in the later stage of growth. Accumulation of nitrate nitrogen in the morning had a greater tendency than that of the afternoon. A sum exceeding $200kg{\cdot}N$ does not necessarily result in increase the amount of nitrate nitrogen in sorghum sudangrass hybrid.

  • Plant biomass, photosystem II (PSII) photochemical activity, photosynthetic function, and zinc (Zn) accumulation were investigated in a sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor ${\times}$ S. sudanense) exposed to various Zn concentrations to determine the elimination capacity of Zn from soils. Plant growth and biomass of the sorghum-sudangrass hybrid decreased with increasing Zn concentration. Symptoms of Zn toxicity, i.e., withering and discoloration of old leaves, were found at Zn concentrations over 800 ppm. PSII photochemical activity, as indicated by the values of $F_v/F_m$ and $F_v/F_o$, decreased significantly three days after exposure to Zn concentrations of 800 ppm or more. Photosynthetic $CO_2$ fixation rate (A) was high between Zn concentrations of 100-200 ppm ($22.5{\mu}mol$ $CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$), but it declined as Zn concentration increased. At Zn concentrations of 800 and 1600 ppm, A was 14.1 and $1.8{\mu}mol$ $CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, respectively. The patterns of stomatal conductance ($g_s$), transpiration rate (E), and water use efficiency (WUE) were all similar to that of photosynthetic $CO_2$ fixation rate, except for dark respiration ($R_d$), which showed an opposite pattern. Zn was accumulated in both above- and below-ground parts of plants, but was more in the below-ground parts. Magnesium (Mg) and iron (Fe) concentrations were significantly low in the leaves of plants, and symptoms of Mg or Fe deficiency, such as a decrease in the SPAD value, were found when plants were treated with Zn concentrations above 800 ppm. These results suggest that the sorghum-sudangrass hybrid is able to accumulate Zn to high level in plant body and eliminate it with its rapid growth and high biomass yield.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of the mixed application of chemical fertilizer (CF) and liquid swine manure (LSM) on the agronomic characteristics, dry matter yield, amino acids, minerals, and free sugars in cultivating Sorghum ${\times}$ Sudangrass hybrid (SSH) on paddy soil. The field experiment was designed in a randomized block design with three replications and consisted of CF 100% (C), CF 70% + LSM 30% (T1), CF 50% + LSM 50% (T2), CF 30% + LSM 70% (T3), and LSM 100% treatment (T4). The application of LSM was based solely on the nitrogen. Plant length, leaf length, leaf width and number of leaf were significantly higher in T4 (p<0.05), but stem diameter did not show significant differences among treatments. Stem hardness increased significantly (p<0.05) as the LSM application rate decreased, but sugar degree decreased significantly (p<0.05) as the LSM application rate decreased. Fresh yield, dry matter yield and TDN yield were the highest in T4, whereas the lowest in T2 (p<0.05). Crude protein, crude fat and crude ash were the highest in C, T4 and T2, respectively (p<0.05). However, NDF and ADF did not show significant difference among treatments. Crude fiber decreased significantly (p<0.05) as the LSM application rate increased. The total mineral content was decreased significantly (p<0.05) as the LSM application rate increased. Total amino acid content was higher in the order of T1> C> T3> T4> T2 (p<0.05). Free sugar content increased significantly (p<0.05) as the LSM application rate increased. The analysis of all the above results suggests that the application of liquid swine manure is very effective, considering the yield performance and the content of sugar degree and free sugar. In addition, liquid swine manure may be possible to grow Sorghum ${\times}$ Sudangrass hybrid without chemical fertilizer.

  • This study was carried out to compare the agronomic characteristics, forage yield, and quality of four sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrids at Yonam College of Agriculture Experimental Livestock Farm, Sunghwan in 2001. The four recommended hybrids used in this study were ‘SXl7’ and ‘877F’(heading type), and ‘TE Evergreen’ and ‘Turbo 9’(headless type). sugar content or heading hybrids(SX17 and 877F) were higher then that of headless hybrids(TE Evergreen and Turbo 9). SX17 had resistance to lodging, while all hybrids had resistance to foliar disease and insect. Dry matter(DM) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yields of heading hybrids were higher then those of headless hybrids. Among sudangrass hybrids, DM and TDN yields of 877F were the highest(21,007 and 12,276kg/ha). The crude protein of Turbo 9(10.5%) was higher than other hybrids. Neutral detergent fiber(NDF) content of headless hybrids were higher than that of heading hybrids, while acid detergent fiber(ADF) and acid detergent lignin(ADL) contents of headless hybrids were lower than those of heading hybrids. Calculated TDN of headless hybrids were higher than that at heading hybrids. Cellulase digestible of organic matter of dry matter (CDOMD) of headless hybrids also were higher then that of heading hybrids. Results of this experiment indicates that heading hybrid was better than headless hybrid in the agronomic characteristics and forage yield of sorghum $\times$ sudangrass. However heading hybrid was lower than leafless hybrid in quality of sorghum $\times$ sudangrass.

  • This study was conducted to obtain fundamental informations necessary to breed forage sorghum at the field of the Livestock Experiment Station from 1988 to 1991. Heterosis was discussed in crossing groups of sorghum X sweet sorghum, sorghum X sudangrass, and (sorghum X sweet sorghum) X sudangrass. Leaf dry weight and stalk dry weight per plant in sweet sorghum crossing group, stalk dry weight per plant in sorghum X sudangrass crosses and leaf area per plant in three way crosses showed the greatest Heterobeltiosis(H$_{b}$). There were significant differences in plant height, stalk diameter and number of tillers per plant between sweet sorghum and sudangrass crosses. H$_{b}$ for total dry matter yield in sweet sorghum and sudangrass crosses were 45.9% and 95.0%, respectively. On the other hand, heterosis for total dry matter yield in three way crosses was smaller than H$_{b}$. There was no relationship between dry matter yield of parents and heterosis of hybrids in sweetsorghum crosses. However, positive correlations between parental yield and hybrid yields were observed. In sudangrass crosses, there were negative correlations between parental yields and heterosis of hybrids. However, no correlation between parental yields and hybrid yields were observed. In three way crosses, there were no correlations between parental yields and heterosis, and between parental yields and hybrids yields.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of cutting frequency on dry matter yield and nutritive value between heading and headless varieties of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid in 1998. Treatments were var. TE hay grazer(heading type) and Jumbo(headless type) as main plot, and 1, 2, and 3 cutting times per a year as sub plot. Although plant height of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid was no significant difference among treatments, headless type was very slightly higher than that of heading type, and both of variety decreased with 1, 2, and 3 cutting times in order. Also, dry matter yield of sorghum~sudangrass hybrid was no significant difference between heading and headless type. Dry matter yield of first cutting plot in heading type and in headless type was the higher than those of second and third cutting plot. Acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber of headless type were slightly higher than that of heading type. Acid detergent fiber of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid was highest at first cutting plot in both varieties. Neutral detergent fiber of second cutting plot in heading type and first cutting plot in headless type were the highest respectively. In vitro dry matter digestibility of headless type was very slightly higher than that of heading type. And in vitro dry matter digestibility of second cutting plot was the highest in both varieties. In vitro digestible dry matter of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid was no significant difference among treatments. The results demonstrated that although there was not significant difference, cultivation of headless type and first cutting plot per a year were very good for nutritive value and DM yield of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid as summer forage crops in Korea. (Key words : Heading, Headless type, Cutting frequency, Sorghum X Sudangrass Hybrid)
