공기분사가 모돈과 포유자돈의 압사 관련 행동에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Air Ejection on the Behaviors of Sows and their Piglets Related to the Crushing of Piglets by Sows)

  • 본 연구는 모돈이 서있거나 앉아 있을 때 모돈의 배 밑에 공기를 분사하는 것이 모돈과 포유자돈의 압사 관련 행동에 미치는 영향을 규명하고자 수행되었으며, 공시동물로는 경산돈 16복과 포유자돈 179두가 분만 후 4일까지 이용되었다. 모돈의 행동을 관찰한 결과, 서있는 행동과 앉아있는 행동에 있어서 대조구와 공기분사구간에 차이가 없는 것으로 나타나 공기분사가 모돈의 행동에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 분석되었다. 반면에 압사와 밀접하게 관련 있는 4가지 포유자돈의 행동을 관찰한 결과 모돈의 뒤로 지나가는 행동, 모돈의 뒤에 서있는 행동, 모돈의 배 밑으로 지나가는 행동, 모돈의 배 밑에 서있는 행동 모두가 대조구에 비해 공기분사구에서 현저히 낮게 나타났다. 따라서, 모돈이 서있거나 앉아있을 때 모돈의 배 밑에 공기분사를 함으로써 모돈의 행동과 포유자돈의 건강에 영향을 미치지 않고 포유자돈의 압사 관련 행동을 억제하여 포유자돈의 압사를 효과적으로 방지할 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.

돼지 생식기 호흡기 증후군 바이러스 자연감염 예의 병리학적 연구 (Pathologic Studies in Piglets Naturally Infected with Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus)

  • Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus infection (PRRSV) was confirmed by serology histopathology immunohistochemistry and bacteriologic examination in young pigs. Four suckling and six weaned piglets submitted from three different farms showed coughing sneezing labored rapid abdominal respiration lethargy and anorexia. Grossly apical and cardiac lung lobes appeared mottled with pale to dark tan discoloration. Submandibular and bronchial lymph nodes were tan and enlarged. All piglets were seropositive for PRRSV antibodies by the indirect immunofluorescent antibody(IFA) test. Microscopically lung lesions were characterized by hyperplasia and hypertrophy of type 2 pneumocytes infiltration of mononuclear cells in alveolar intersitium accumulation of necrotic debris in alveolar spaces accompanied by proliferation of alveolar multinucleated syncytial cells. Using immunohistochemical technique PRRSV antigens were demonstrated in alveolar macrophages and type 2 pneumocytes in histologic lung tissue sections. Also PRRSV antigens were detected in brain lymph nodes spleen and heart. Additionally piglets showed nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis mandibular necrotic lymphadenopathy splenic atrophy and myocardial necrosis.

Effects of Iron from an Amino Acid Complex on the Iron Status of Neonatal and Suckling Piglets

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of iron from an amino acid complex (Availa-$Fe^{\circledR}$) on the iron status of neonatal and suckling piglets. A total of 24 gestating sows (Landrace${\times}$Large White) were randomly allocated to three dietary treatments. The control diet contained 80 mg $kg^{-1}$ Fe from ferrous sulfate heptahydrate ($FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$), while the two experimental diets were supplemented with an additional 120 mg $kg^{-1}$ Fe from Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ or $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$, respectively. The lactating sows remained the same iron treatments as gestating sows, while neonatal piglets of 24 litters born from the above sows were allotted to another three treatments. Piglets from the sows of the control treatment were fed basal diet with no supplemental Fe as control treatment, but were injected with 100 mg Fe as Fe dextran at birth. Piglets from the sows of Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ or $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$ treatments were supplemented with 120 mg $kg^{-1}$ iron from Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ or $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$, respectively. The total born alive and weaned, and the average piglets weight at birth and at weaning were not significantly affected by the sow' dietary treatments (p>0.05). Iron from Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ did not demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit and plasma iron of sows on day 90 and 105 of pregnancy and the milk iron of sows during lactation (p>0.05). Neonatal piglets in the Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ treatment had a significantly higher hemoglobin concentration (p<0.05) and higher hematocrit and plasma iron (p>0.05) than those in the other two treatments, respectively. The hemoglobin of suckling piglets in the Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ treatment was higher than that of piglets in $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$ treatment on day 28 (p<0.05). The total iron binding capacity of piglets in Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ treatment was lower than that of piglets in the control and $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$ treatment on day 14 (p<0.05), but there was not a statistically significant difference among three treatments on day 28 (p>0.05). However, the hemoglobin and hematocrit of suckling piglets injected with Fe were higher than those of piglets in the other two treatments (p<0.05). This study indicated that the addition of 120 mg $kg^{-1}$ iron from amino acid complex into the diets improved iron status of neonatal and nursing piglets more effectively than the addition of 120 mg $kg^{-1}$ iron from $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$, however, this improvement of the organic Fe was not sufficient to replace the Fe injection for prevention of iron-deficiency anemia.

포유모돈(哺乳母豚)의 포유(哺乳), 휴식(休息) 및 수면행동(睡眠行動)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Study on the Behaviour of Nursing, Rest and Sleep in the Lactating Sow)

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)는 1984년(年) 7월(月) 6일(日)부터 8월(月) 3일(日)까지 28일간(日間), 분만모돈(分娩母豚) 40두(頭)와 분만자돈(分娩仔豚) 420두(頭)를 가지고, 분만(分娩), 포유(哺乳), 수안행동(睡眼行動)을 조사하고자 실시(實施)하였던 바, 그 결과(結果)를 요약(要約)하면 다음과 같다. 1. 분만모돈(分娩母豚)은 분만시(分娩時) 좌(左) 우(右)로 누워서 분만(分娩)했으며, 분만(分娩)도중 50%는 분만자세(分娩姿勢)를 바꾸었다. 출생(出生) 자돈(仔豚)의 65.5%는 앞쪽으로 출산(出산)하였다. 포유자세(哺乳姿勢)는 좌측(左側)으로 눕는것이 51.3%였다. 2. 자돈분만시간(仔豚分娩時間)은 239.3분(分)이었고, 자돈(仔豚)과 자돈(仔豚)의 분만간격(分娩間隔)은 19.3분(分)이었다. 3. 분만후(分娩後) 첫 번째 젖을 빨려는 시도는 분만후(分娩後) 24.3분(分)이었으며, 젖꼭지 결정시기는 분만후(分娩後) 31.9시간(時間)이었다. 4. 분만일(分娩日) 자돈(仔豚)의 포유시간(哺乳時間)과 포유회수(哺乳回數)는 각각(各各) 35.8초(秒)와 24.6회(回)/1일(日)이었으며, 포유기간(哺乳期間)이 경과할수록 포유시간(哺乳時間)과 포유회수(哺乳回數)가 단축되었다. (P<.01, P<.05) 포유간격(哺乳間隔)은 분만일(分娩日)에 58.5분(分)이었으며, 포유기간(哺乳期間)이 경과할수록 포유간격(哺乳間隔)이 길어졌다. 5. 포유모돈(哺乳母豚)은 하루중 깨어있는 시간이 31.7%, 쉬는 시간이 51.6%이었다.

Effect of alternative farrowing pens with temporary crating on the performance of lactating sows and their litters

  • This study was performed to development the alternative farrowing pen (AFP) and to investigate performance and behavior of lactating sows and their litter. A total of 64 multiparous sows were randomly divided into two groups and were allocated to farrowing crates (FCs) and AFPs. The AFPs contained a crate and support bars that could be folded to provide the sows with extra space on day 5 postpartum. Behavior was recorded by charge-coupled device cameras and digital video recorders, and the data were scanned every 2 min to obtain an instantaneous behavioral sample. Farrowing systems did not affect feed intake, back-fat thickness, litter size and piglet weight at birth and weaning (p > 0.05). In addition, there were no differences in the number of crushed piglets between the two farrowing systems (p > 0.05). However, the weaning-to-estrus interval was shorter in the sows of the AFPs than in thous of the FCs (p < 0.05). The sows spent most of their time lying down during the lactating period, at about 80% lateral recumbency and 10%-15% ventral recumbency. The only significant differences were in the feeding and drinking behavior between sows in the two farrowing systems (p < 0.05). The FC sows displayed more feeding and drinking behavior than the AFP sows, especially in the late lactating period (p < 0.05). Piglets in the FCs tended to spend more time walking than piglets in the AFPs (p < 0.05), whereas there were no differences in suckling and lying behavior between piglets in the two farrowing systems (p > 0.05). It is concluded that the AFPs with temporary crating until day 4 postpartum did not negatively affect performance and crushed piglet compared with the FCs. It also may improve animal welfare by allowing sows to move and turn around during the lactating period. Further research is needed to find suitable housing designs to enhance productivity and animal welfare.

Effects of Dietary Lysine Supplementation on the Performance of Lactating Sows and Litter Piglets during Different Seasons

  • The effect of dietary lysine supplementation on the performance of crossbred lactating sows (n = 49, total 92 litters) and suckling piglets during the warm and cool seasons was studied. Sows were randomly allocated to one of two experimental diets, which were fed throughout a 28-day lactation period. Two diets were formulated based on corn-soybean meal with 6% wheat bran, containing 15% crude protein, and with or without 0.25% lysine-HCl supplementation. No interaction was observed between season and dietary lysine supplementation. Dietary lysine supplementation significantly (p<0.05) increased weaning weight (7.11 vs. 6.46 kg) and daily gain (0.20 vs. 0.18 kg) of piglets. During the warm season lactating sows had significantly lower feed intake (3.78 vs. 6.11 kg, p<0.01), higher weight loss (19.81 vs. 9.73 kg, p<0.01) and backfat loss (0.23 vs. 0.06 cm, p<0.01), longer interval from weaning to estrus (9.32 vs. 6.21 days, p<0.05), lower litter weight gain (42.13 vs. 52.90 kg, p<0.01) and lower daily gain (0.17 vs. 0.21 kg, p<0.01) than lactating sows during the cool season. The results indicate that the influences of dietary treatment and season were independent. The 15.0% CP lactation diet with 0.25% lysine-HCl supplementation did not improve the performance of lactating sows and litter piglets, which was impaired by the warm season.

한국 양돈장의 porcine cytomegalovirus 감염양상 및 바이러스학적 유병률 (Virological Prevalence and Infection Patterns of Porcine Cytomegalovirus in Selected Pig Farms in Korea)

  • Porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) is a betaherpesvirus which causes reproductive failure in breeding sows and generalized infection in newborn piglets. It has worldwide distribution including Korea. Serological survey on this virus has been reported in 76.3% of pigs, but virological survey and epidemiological analysis on PCMV distribution have been reported in only a few papers in Korea. In this study, we investigated the virological prevalence and infection status of PCMV on a farm level in selected swine farms with respiratory diseases. A total of 1,938 blood samples taken from groups of pigs of different ages were collected from 31 farms distributed nationwide in 2006 and 2007 and tested by PCR to detect the presence of PCMV. Virological prevalence at farm level and pig level were 96.8% and 17.5%, respectively, suggesting that PCMV has endemically infected Korean pig herds. The prevalence at farm level in gilts, sows and suckling piglet groups were 16.7%, 36.7% and 56.7%, indicating that vertical infections frequently occurred in conception or newborn stage. Thereafter, detection rates of PCMV were slightly increased in pig groups aged 40 and 70 days (70.0% and 73.3%), and then gradually decreased as they aged - 33.3% in 100, 26.7% in 130 and 16.7% in 160 day old pig groups. The prevalence at pig level has similar patterns to that at farm level. With the passage of time, the variation of infection patterns of PCMV was investigated in four PCMV-positive farms. Three blood samples were collected at intervals of 6 months in each farm, and examined for presence of PCMV using PCR. The results revealed that once PCMV was introduced to the pig farms, it continuously circulated between and within groups of sows and piglets in those farms. Taken together, it can be concluded that PCMV has endemically infected Korean pig farms and has the potential risk for emerging pathogen in combination with the known endemic pathogens including porcine reproductive, respiratory syndrome virus and porcine circovirus type 2. Therefore, more research is needed on diagnosis, epidemiology and control strategy for PCMV on the field.

우리나라 양돈장에서 Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae 유병율 조사 (Seroprevalence of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infection in Korean swine herds)

  • Serum samples of 1,175 pigs from 148 Korean swine farms not using Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyo) vaccines were collected for seroepidemiological study of M. hyo infection by indirect ELISA method. Informations of each farm were provided about province where the farm was located and season when blood samples were collected. Then, the selected farms were divided into farm units which had 5 serum samples according to production stages : sow, suckling piglet (<30 days old), nursery pig (30-70 days old), and growing pig (>70 days old). Seroprevalence of M. hyo infection according to production stages, province, and season was investigated by using ELISA-positve rate of the selected samples for each study. This study showed that 85.34% (78.94-91.78%, 95% CI) of farms were positive to M. hyo infection and 34.81% (32.09-37.53%, 95% CI) among pigs were sero-positive to M. hyo infection in Korean swine farms. In the study of seroprevalence by production stage, most farms had sows and growing pigs which were sero-positive to M. hyo infection (sow: 83.05%, growing pigs: 87.72%) and most pigs seemed to be naturally infected by M. hyo at 8-10 weeks of age. Also, M. hyo infection showed seasonal pattern that most pigs were infected in late fall to early winter. However, in the study of seroprevalence by province, there was no significant correlation between province and M. hyo sero-positive rate.

제주도의 돼지유행성설사 발생 상황과 병리학적 고찰 (Prevalence and pathologic study of porcine epidemic diarrhea in Jeju)

  • From April 2014 to September 2015, 153 piglets from 52 farms in Jeju were diagnosed with porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED). The major PED cases were focused on suckling piglets (144 piglets, 94.1%), particularly in 1-7-day-old piglets. Histopathologically, severe villous atrophy was observed in the small intestine, especially in the jejunum and ileum. The mean villous height to crypt depth ratios of the jejunum and ileum were 1.4:1 and 1.5:1, respectively. The major histopathologic findings of the small intestine were cytoplasmic vacuolation, cuboidalization, squamation, and exfoliation of the mucosal enterocytes in the villi. The cytoplasmic vacuolations in the enterocytes were the most prevalent lesions in the small intestine and were more severe in the ileum than in the jejunum. According to immunohistochemistry methods, the PED virus (PEDV) antigens were presented in the cytoplasms of the enterocytes, and were distributed more prevalently in the ileum than in the jejunum. PEDV antigens were also detected in the colon of 26 piglets (19.5%). Sequence comparison and phylogenetic analysis indicated that 12 PEDV had more than a 98.9% homology with each other. These PEDV strains were highly homologous with the genogroup 2 North American group.

분만 후 모돈의 행동적 회복과 포유자돈의 행동적 발달 (Behavioral Recovery of Sows and Behavioral Development of TheirPiglets Postpartum)

  • 본 연구는 모돈과 포유자돈의 관리에 있어 가장 중요한 시기인 분만 후 5일 동안 모돈의 행동적 회복과 포유자돈의 행동적 발달 정도를 알아보고자 수행되었으며, 공시동물로는 경산돈 5복과 포유자돈 56두가 이용되었고 이들에 대한 행동이 분만 후 5일까지 분석되었다. 모돈의 행동변화를 분석한 결과, Lying ventrally는 분만 직후부터 분만 26시간 후까지 증가하다가 이후부터 감소하였으며 분만 80시간 후부터는 거의 비슷한 수준으로 나타났다. Lying laterally는 분만 직후부터 분만 26시간 후까지 감소하다가 분만 80시간 이후부터 거의 비슷한 수준으로 나타났다. Standing, drinking 그리고 feeding은 분만 직후부터 분만 23시간 후까지 증가하다가 이후부터 다시 감소하였으며 분만 60시간 후부터 서서히 증가하였다. Sitting은 분만 46시간 후에 출현율이 가장 높게 나타났으며 이후부터 서서히 감소하였다. 이러한 결과들을 고려해 볼 때 행동적인 측면에서 모돈의 회복은 분만 80시간 후 정도에서 거의 완전하게 이루어지는 것으로 판단된다. 포유자돈의 행동을 분석한 결과, Lying은 분만 45시간 후까지 급격히 증가하다가 이후부터 거의 비슷한 수준으로 나타났으며, Massaging과 suckling은 분만 36시간 후까지 급격하게 감소하다가 이후부터 거의 변화가 없었다. Walking은 분만 21시간 후까지 증가한 후 분만 45시간 후 정도까지 비슷한 수준으로 유지되면서 서서히 감소하였다. 이런 결과를 미루어 볼 때 포유자돈의 행동 발달은 분만 45시간 후 정도에서 거의 완전하게 이루어지는 것으로 판단된다. 따라서 분만 후 80시간 이전까지는 모돈이 완전히 회복된 것이라 할 수 없으므로 모돈의 상태를 지속적으로 관찰할 필요가 있으며 보다 세심하게 관리할 필요가 있다. 또한 분만 후 45시간 이전까지는 포유자돈의 행동 발달이 완전하게 이루어지지 않은 미숙한 단계이므로 포유자돈의 관리에 있어 더 많은 주의를 필요로 하며, 특히 이 기간 동안 압사로 인한 폐사에 주의하여야 할 것이다.
