Catching efficiency and development of the biodegradable monofilament gill net for snow crab, Chionoecetes opilio (생분해성 대게 자망용 단일섬유 개발과 어획성능)

  • In order to develop the biodegradable monofilament gill net for the protection of marine ecosystem and reduction of ghost fishing, enpol monofilament gill net was made for Chionoecetes opilio using polybutylene succinate as a biodegradable chip. Catching efficiency on 2 type monofilament gill net, PA and Enpol, were carried out using 2 commercial fishing boats around the fishing ground of Wang-dol rock from January 2004 to May 2006. Enpol monofilament gill net spun polybutylene succinate as a biodegradable chip was appeared high practicality for Chionoecetes opilio gill net. Target fishing ratio were 98% and 98.3% for the PA and enpol monfilament gill net, respectively. In addition, CPUE ratio of female and male(CL < 90mm) to Chionoecetes opilio caught in the enpol gill net were 25.3-40.3%, 14.0-22.1% less than PA gill net, respectively. However, CPUE ratio of male(CL > 90mm) to Chionoecetes opilio caught in the enpol gill net were 2.5-11.3% more than PA gill net. There was no difference in CPUE of female and male to Chionoecetes opilio caught using 2 gill nets as a result of the significance level of 5% by T-test.

Effects of steam heat treatment conditions on the swelling and physical properties of PBS (polybutylene succinate) copolymer monofilament gill net (습식 열처리 조건이 PBS 공중합체 모노필라멘트 그물감의 부풀음 및 물성변화에 미치는 영향)

  • Swelling of the heat-treated netting for gillnet was estimated through the netting height in square acrylic tank. Experimental Nylon netting and PBSAT netting were heat-treated by using the high-degree vacuum method in hot water after net making. Heat-treatment temperatures were conducted with Nylon netting $105^{\circ}C$ and PBSAT netting $62^{\circ}C$, $65^{\circ}C$, $66^{\circ}C$, $67^{\circ}C$. The swelling measurement method of a netting using the square tank was capable of the reduction measurement errors comparing with measurement methods of a mesh inner angle and the shortening rate of a mesh size. In addition, this method was available to comparison evaluation for each netting more easily. Wet type heat-treatment apparatus with high-degree vacuum was shown higher $7{\sim}8^{\circ}C$ inner side temperature than a setting temperature. The tensile strength and elongation of Nylon netting and PBSAT netting were shown higher wet condition than dry condition. The tensile strengths of PBSAT monofilaments in dry and wet condition were sharply decreased at heat-treatment temp. $75^{\circ}C$ than heat-treatment temp. $74^{\circ}C$.

Effects of Reaction Conditions for Improvement of Caramelization Rate (Caramel화 반응속도 향상을 위한 반응조건의 영향)

  • Effects of sugars, temperature, pH and some chemicals on caramelization were investigated for improving of its reaction rates. Among the sugars tested, fructose showed the fastest reaction rate, followed by sucrose, glucose, starch syrup and maltose. As the reaction temperature increased from 80 to $110^{\circ}C$, the rate greatly increased by the range of $150{\sim}8000$ folds depending on sugars. It was indicated that pH 10 resulted in the highest reaction rate in the range of $pH{\;}4{\sim}10$. When several chemicals, such as phosphates and organic acid salts, were added to starch syrup, the rate increased by more than 10 folds, in particular effects of $K_2HPO_4$ and sodium salts of citrate, oxalate and succinate were significant.

  • Leucine-responsive regulatory protein (LRP) is a regulatory protein of molecular weight 18.8 kDa and is widely known to regulate many metabolic and functional activities of operons in Escherichia coli. The gene for Lrp from Escherichia coli in pQE system of 6 ${\times}$ His-tagging was expressed and $^3H$-labeled protein, as well as the wild type Lrp, was purified. The crosslink experiments were performed to analyze the quaternary structure of Lrp at high of $5{\mu}M$ and at low concentrations below $0.3{\mu}M$ with cross linkers, such as glutaraldehyde, 1, 2, 3, 4-diepoxy-butane (DEB), and ethylene glycol bis (succinimidyl succinate) (EGS). In the experiments, we found that the Lrp protein can be formed higher conformation states of tetramer, hexamer, octamer, as well as dimeric state when incubated with the above cross linkers.

  • In the present work, PLA/PBS blends with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) at different contents were processed by using a twin-screw extruder and an injection molding machine, and then their mechanical, thermal and morphological properties were investigated. The mechanical properties such as flexural strength, flexural modulus, tensile strength and tensile modulus and thermal properties such as melting behavior, dynamic mechanical thermal properties and thermal stability significantly depended on the contents of PLA and PBS. However, the heat deflection temperature of the blends was not significantly influenced by the contents of PLA and PBS. Also, the fracture surfaces of PLA/PBS blends were changed from a brittle pattern to a ductile pattern with increasing the PBS contents.

  • Cellulose is an abundant biodegradable material in nature with excellent properties, but due to its poor processability, it has been widely studied for processing through modification. Cellulose acetate propionate (CAP) is a cellulose derivative in which the hydroxyl group of cellulose is replaced by acetyl and propionyl groups. CAP has several advantages, such as excellent solubility, structural stability, light and weather resistance, and good transparency. Porous nanofibers with excellent specific surface area, which can be applied in various fields, can be easily formed by the phase separation method using highly volatile solvents. High speed centrifugal spinning is a nano/micro fiber preparation method with advantages such as fast spinning and easy alignment control. In this study, a CAP/polybutylene succinate (PBS) spinning solution with chloroform as solvent was prepared to prepare porous microfibers and the fiber morphology was examined as a function of the disk rotation speed in an high speed centrifugal spinning device.

  • Membranes are increasingly used in a variety of applications including desalination, gas separation, disposable filters, and healthcare products. Recently, sustainable and green membrane fabrication technology is recognized as one of the decisive initiatives to reach the target of pollution control. Especially, the fabrication of bio-based membranes using such as poly lactic acid (PLA), polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), and polybutylene succinate (PBS) has attracted considerable attention. The phase inversion method is one of the versatile approaches for preparing PLA membranes. This article reviews the recent advances in PLA membrane preparation via the phase inversion method. Furthermore, it provides a perspective on the potential outlook for future advances. Overall, this review has demonstrated has been conducted in the area of bio-based PLA membranes.

Traditional Korean diet can alter the urine organic acid profile, which may reflect the metabolic influence of the diet (한식의 체내 대사에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구: 소변 유기산 분석을 통한 한식의 효과)

  • Purpose: To determine the metabolic influence of the traditional Korean diet (K-diet), which has been regarded as a healthy diet, we investigated the profile of urine organic acids that are intermediates of various types of metabolism including energy metabolism. Methods: Ten women aged 50-60 years were recruited and randomly divided into 2 diet groups, K-diet and control diet, the latter of which is a Westernized Korean diet that is commonly consumed by Koreans nowadays. Before and after the 2-week intervention, 46 urine organic acids were determined using LC/MS/MS, along with clinical parameters. Results: The average concentrations of succinate (4.14 ± 0.84 ㎍/mg creatinine vs. 1.49 ± 0.11, p = 0.0346) and hydroxymethylglutarate (3.67 ± 0.36 ㎍/mg creatinine vs. 2.97 ± 0.29, p = 0.0466), both of which are intermediates of energy metabolism, decreased in the K-diet group after the 2-week intervention, but these were not observed in the control diet group. In particular, the average concentration of succinate in the K-diet group was lower than that in the control group (3.33 ± 0.56 ㎍/mg creatinine vs. 1.49 ± 0.11, p = 0.0284) after 2 weeks. The concentrations of two tryptophan metabolites, 5-hydroxyindolacetate (3.72 ± 0.22 ㎍/mg creatinine vs. 3.14 ± 0.21, p = 0.0183) and indican (76.99 ± 8.35 ㎍/mg creatinine vs. 37.89 ± 10.06, p = 0.0205) also decreased only in the K-diet group. After the 2-week intervention, the concentration of kynurenate, another tryptophan metabolite, was lower in the K-diet group than that in the control diet group (3.96 ± 0.51 ㎍/mg creatinine vs. 2.90 ± 0.22, p = 0.0356). Interestingly, the urine level of kynurenate was positively correlated with BMI (r = 0.61424, p = 0.0003) and total cholesterol (r = 0.46979, p = 0.0088), which decreased only in the K-diet group (239.40 ± 15.14 mg/dL vs. 198.20 ± 13.25, p = 0.0163). Conclusion: The K-diet alters the urinary excretion of organic acids involved in energy metabolism and tryptophan metabolism, suggesting the influence of the K-diet on these types of metabolism. Urine organic acids changed by the K-diet may serve as biomarkers in future studies.

  • To improve the water solubility of arylsulfonylimidazolidinone (JSH-2282), a potent anti-cancer agent, two urea derivatives, sodium (S)-2-(3-(4-(5-((S)-2-oxo-4-phenylimidazolidin-1-ylsulfonyl)indoline-1-carbonyl)-phenyl)ureido)succinate (2a) and sodium (S)-2-(3-(4-(5-((S)-2-oxo-4-phenylimidazolidin-1-ylsulfonyl)indoline-1-carbonyl)phenyl)ureido)pentanedioate (2b), were synthesized and studied for solubility and anti-cancer activity.

Effects of Salts on the Hydration of $\alpha$-Calcium Sulfate Hemihydrate ($\alpha$형 반수석고의 수화에 미치는 염류의 영향)

  • The effects of salts which was used as a catalysis in formation of $\alpha$-calciumusulfate hemihydrate from dicalcium sulfate hydrate were investigated on the hydration of $\alpha$-calciumsulfate hemihydrate. The hydration of $\alpha$-calciumsulfate hemihydrate was studied by the measurements of crystalline water, heat evolution. Also the hydrates were analyzed by XRD, DSC and SEM. The promotive effect each salts on the hydration was as follows: NaCl>NH4Cl>NaNO3>NH4NO3, and the hydration rate was accelerated with concentration of salts. The effect of Al2(SO4)3 and potassium sodium tartrate on the hydration was slmilar to water, whereas sodium succinate and gelatin retarded the hydration in comparision with water. These salts affected the hydration time but total heat evoution was similar.
