Objective : The present study analyzed the risk factors, prevalence and clinical results following revision surgery for adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) in patients who had undergone lumbar fusion. Methods : Over an 8-year period, we performed posterior lumbar fusion in 81 patients. Patients were followed a minimum of 2 years (mean 5.5 years). During that time, 9 patients required revision surgery due to ASD development. Four patients underwent autogenous posterolateral arthrodesis and extended transpedicle screw fixation, 4 patients underwent decompressive laminectomy and interspinous device implantation, and 1 patient underwent simple decompression. Results : Of the 9 of patients with clinical ASD, 33.3% (3 of 9) of patients did not have radiographic ASD on plain radiographs. Following revision surgery, the clinical results were excellent or good in 8 patients (88.9%). Age > 50 years at primary surgery was a significant risk factor for ASD development, while number of fusion levels, initial diagnosis and type of fusion were not. Conclusion : The incidence of ASD development after lumbar surgery was 11.1% (9 of 81) in this study. Age greater than 50 was the statistically significant risk factor for ASD development. Similar successful clinical outcomes were observed after extended fusion with wide decompression or after interspinous device implantation. Given the latter procedure is less invasive, the findings suggest it may be considered a treatment alternative in selected cases but it needs further study.
Successful control of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola, the causal agent of bacterial leaf streak, requires a specific and reliable diagnostic tool. A pathovar-specific PCR assay was developed for the rapid and accurate detection ofthe plant pathogenic bacterium Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola in diseased plant. Based on differences in a membrane fusion protein gene of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola and other microorganisms, which was generated from NCBI (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/) and CMR (http://cmr.tigr.org/) BLAST searches, one pair of pathovar-specific primers, XOCMF/XOCMR, was synthesized. Primers XOCMF and XOCMR from a membrane fusion protein gene were used to amplity a 488-bp DNA fragment. The PCR product was only produced from 4 isolates of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola among 37 isolates of other pathovars and species of Xanthomonas, Pectobacterium, Pseudomonas, Burkholderia, Escherichia coli, and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. dianthi. The results suggested that the assay detected the pathogen more rapidly and accurately than standard isolation methods.

This paper presents regularly micro-textured glass surfaces ensuring the superhydrophobic properties in the Cassie-Baxter regime. The proposed surfaces were fabricated simply and efficiently by filling the glass material into a silicon micro-mold with periodic micro-cavities based on a thermal-reflow process, resulting in a successful demonstration of the textured glass surface with periodically-arrayed micro-pillar structures. The static and dynamic wetting properties of the micro-textured glass surfaces were characterized by measuring the static contact angle (SCA) and contact angle hysteresis (CAH), respectively. In addition, the surface wettability was estimated theoretically based on Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter wetting theories, and compared with the experimental ones. Through the experimental and theoretical observations, it was clearly confirmed that the proposed micro-textured glass surfaces showed the slippery superhydrophobic behaviors in the Cassie-Baxter wetting mode.
The confinement degradation of the energetic particles during RMP would be a key issue in success of realizing the successful energy production using fusion plasma, because a 3.5 MeV energetic alpha particle should be able to sustain the burning plasma after the ignition. As KSTAR recent results indicate the generation of high-performance plasma(${\beta}_p{\sim}3$), the confinement of the energetic particles is also an important key aspect in neutral beam driven plasma. In general, the measured absolute value of the neutron intensity is generally used for to estimating the confinement time of energetic particles by comparing it with the theoretical value based on transport calculations. However, the availability of, but for its calculation process, many accurate diagnostic data of plasma parameters such as thermal and incident fast ion density, are essential to the calculation process. In this paper, the time evolution of the neutron signal from an He3 counter during the beam blank has permitted to facilitate the estimation of the slowing down time of energetic particles and the method is applied to investigate the fast ion effect on ELM suppressed KSTAR plasma which is heated by high energy deuterium neutral beams.
Objective : Unilateral facet dislocation of the cervical spine occurs by flexion and rotation injuries and cannot be easily reduced by axial traction. We analyzed 14 consecutive patients with unilateral facet dislocation of the cervical spine to increase knowledge about anatomical reduction of locked facet and factors for successful reduction. Methods : Fourteen patients [10 men and 4 women] with unilateral facet dislocation of the cervical spine were retrospectively analyzed. Plain X-ray, computerized tomography scan, and magnetic resonance imaging were performed. All patients underwent manual reduction and surgery with anterior interbody fusion and plate fixation. The manual reduction was performed by neck flexion and rotation to the opposite side of dislocation, followed by rotation and flexion of the head toward the side of dislocation and extension with relaxation of traction. Mean follow-up period was 17 months. The level of spine, amount of subluxation, combined facet fracture, and time from injury to initial reduction were analyzed using the data obtained from medical records. Results : Thirteen [93%] patients were reduced successfully. Immediate reduction was achieved in 7 patients but failed in 7 patients. Seven patients underwent delayed closed reduction under general anesthesia, and successful reduction was achieved in 6 patients. Only one patient with bone chips between articular facets failed to achieve anatomical reduction. Conclusion : In order to reduce the locked facet more easily and safely, we recommend manipulative traction with anterior interbody fusion and plate fixation under general anesthesia after being aware of spinal cord injury with magnetic resonance imaging.
Objective : This purpose of this study was to determine the clinical efficiency and applicability, and to analyze the radiologic findings of the anterior cervical approach using two synthetic cages for interbody fusion. Methods : A total of 41 patients with cervical diseases underwent anterior discectomy and interbody fusion with the PEEK $Solis^{TM}$ cage in 21 patients and the carbon composite $Osta-Pek^{TM}$ cage in 20 patients. Outcome assessment was done using Odom's criteria. Radiological assessment was performed with respect to subsidence, bony fusion and lordosis. The mean follow-up period was 13 months. Results : There were 34 [92.9%] successful cases. The average height of the disc space 12 months after surgery compared the height just after surgery was decreased over 3mm in 4 cases, indicating severe subsidence. The use of these synthetic cages have provided the increase in postoperative cervical lordosis. Conclusion : There were no significant differences between the $Solis^{TM}$ and $Osta-Pek^{TM}$ cages on clinical and radiologic outcomes. Both $Solis^{TM}$ and $Osta-Pek^{TM}$ cages showed low subsidences and complications associated with hardware with good clinical outcomes, high fusion rates, restored disc heights, and restored cervical lordosis.

Objective : This study aims to determine the optimal dose of recombinant-human bone morphogenic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) for successful bone fusion in minimally invasive lateral lumbar interbody fusion (MIS LLIF). Previous studies show that rhBMP is an effective alternative to autologous iliac crest bone graft, but the optimal dose remains uncertain. The study analyzes the fusion rates associated with different rhBMP doses to provide a recommendation for the optimal dose in MIS LLIF. Methods : Ninety-three patients underwent MIS LLIF using demineralized bone matrix (DBM) or a mixture of rhBMP-2 and DBM as fusion material. The group was divided into the following three groups according to the rhBMP-2 usage : group A, only DBM was used (n=27); group B, 1 mg of rhBMP-2 per 5 mL of DBM paste (n=41); and group C, 2 mg of rhBMP-2 per 5 mL of DBM paste (n=25). Demographic data, clinical outcomes, postoperative complication and fusion were assessed. Results : At 12 months post-surgery, the overall fusion rate was 92.3% according to Bridwell fusion grading system. Groups B and C, who received rhBMP-2, had significantly higher fusion rates than group A, who received only DBM. However, there was no significant increase in fusion rate when the rhBMP-2 dosage was increased from group B to group C. The groups B and C showed significant improvement in back pain and Oswestry disability index compared to the group A. The incidence of screw loosening was decreased in groups B and C, but there was no significant difference in the occurrence of other complications. Conclusion : Usage of rhBMP-2 in LLIF surgery leads to early and increased final fusion rates, which can result in faster pain relief and return to daily activities for patients. The benefits of using rhBMP-2 were not significantly different between the groups that received 1 mg/5 mL and 2 mg/5 mL of rhBMP-2. Therefore, it is recommended to use 1 mg of rhBMP-2 with 5 mL of DBM, taking both economic and clinical aspects into consideration.

The genomes of Arabidopsis and rice have been fully sequenced. Genomic sequencing provides global information about genome structure and organization. A comprehensive research account of our recent studies conducted on genome painting, comparative genomics and genome fusion is provided in order to project the prospects of plant cytogenetic research in post-genomics era. Genome analysis by GISH using genome painting is demonstrated as an excellent means suitable for visualization of a whole genome, since total genomic DNA representing the overall molecular composition of the genome is used as a probe. FISH on extended DNA fibers has been developed for high-resolution FISH and has contributed to determining the copy number and order of genes. We have also mapped a number of genes involving starch synthesis on wheat chromosomes by FISH and compared the position of these genes on linkage map of rice. Macro synteny between wheat and rice can be observed by comparing the location of these genes in spite of the fact that the size of DNA per chromosome differs by 20 fold in two. Moreover, to approach our goal towards making bread and udon noodles from rice flour in future by incorporating bread making and the noodle qualifies in rice, we have been successful in introducing large genomic DNA fragments containing agronomically important genes of wheat into a rice by successive introduction of large insert BAC clones, there by expanding genetic variability in rice. We call this method genome fusion.

Tooth transposition is a disorder in which a permanent tooth develops and erupts in the normal position of another permanent tooth. Fusion and gemination are developmental disturbances presenting as the union of teeth. This article reports the nonsurgical retreatment of a very rare case of fused teeth with transposition. A patient was referred for endodontic treatment of her maxillary left first molar in the position of the first premolar, which was adjacent to it on the distobuccal side. Orthopantomography and periapical radiography showed two crowns sharing the same root, with a root canal treatment and an associated periapical lesion. Tooth fusion with transposition of a maxillary molar and a premolar was diagnosed. Nonsurgical endodontic retreatment was performed. At four yr follow-up, the tooth was asymptomatic and the radiolucency around the apical region had decreased, showing the success of our intervention. The diagnosis and treatment of fused teeth require special attention. The canal system should be carefully explored to obtain a full understanding of the anatomy, allowing it to be fully cleaned and obturated. Thermoplastic techniques were useful in obtaining hermetic obturation. A correct anatomical evaluation improves the set of treatment options under consideration, leading to a higher likelihood of esthetically and functionally successful treatment.

Traditional casting methods require long production lead time and high cost while not accommodating design changes easily. One of the technological alternatives to improve casting method to meet diversifying needs is Additive Manufacturing (AM). Among the 7 AM techniques, Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) is deemed most appropriate for casting applications. Currently, most AM machines are imported; therefore limiting the scope of available services and applications. This paper explores the domestic development of AM machines as well as the applications in casting. Each chapter describes development phases of PBF machines, applicable materials and parameter settings, while the last chapter illustrates a successful case of additive manufacturing industrial casting cores.
