  • This paper presents a new auto brighoess control algorithm fur adaptive background subtraction. The algorithm is designed to cope with the problem of auto-brightness adjustment feature of consumer-type cameras. The experimental results show the proposed method improves performance of the classification. This will be beneficial to many computer vision applications in term of reducing the cost of implementation and making them more available to the mass consumer market.

  • A process of identifying moving objects from data is typical task in many computer vision applications. In this paper, we propose a motion segmentation method that generally consists from background subtraction and foreground pixel segmentation. The Approximated Median Filter (AMF) was chosen to perform background modelling. To demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed approach, we tested it gray-scale video data as well as RGB color space.

  • In this study, we tried to find a way to improve the pedagogical decision-making practices related to the presentation order of 'large number' and 'small number' in problem situations of subtraction of the natural number. For this purpose, the elementary school teachers' perception about problem situations in real-life context of subtraction of natural numbers was investigated, and the collected data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively to identify teachers' pedagogical perceptions. As a result of this study, it was confirmed the need for consideration on how to set up a problem situations in real-life context of subtraction so that students can develop their ability to solve various types of problems. To this end, not only in a problem situation of subtraction where you have to think of 'large number' first and 'small number' later, but also about the introduction of problem situations in real-life context of subtraction in which you think about 'small number' first and 'large number' later, which often appears in real-life. You will need to recognize the need. And you should have a pedagogical view on this. The results of this study will be able to contribute to the preparation of pedagogical method that can expand the understanding of various problem situations where subtraction is applied from the lower grades of elementary school.

  • This paper proposes a method to extract coronary arteries effectively in the angiography, In general. DSA(Digital Subtraction Angiography) is a well-established technique for the visualization of coronary arteries, DSA involves the subtraction of a mask image, an image of a heart before the injection of contrast medium, from a live image, However, this technique is sensitive to the movement of background and can cause wrong detection due to the variance of background intensity between two images. Therefore, this paper solves the structural problem resulted from background movement by selecting an image which has the least difference of movement through the similarity analysis of background texture, and it extracts only the blood vessels effectively through local intensity correction of the selected images, Experimental results show that the proposed method has the lower false-detection rate and higher accuracy rate than existing methods.

  • Footstep detection using seismic sensors for security is a very meaningful task, but readings can easily fluctuate due to noise in outdoor environment. We propose NSSC method based on nonlinear spectral subtraction and cross-correlation using prime footstep model signal as a footstep signal refining process that enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and attenuates noise. After de-noising, a detection event classification method is presented as further refining process to ensure that the detection result is a footstep. To validate the proposed algorithm, representative experiments including sunny and rainy-day cases are demonstrated.

  • Optical emission spectroscopy is used to identify chemical species and monitor the changes of process results during the plasma process. However, plasma process monitoring or fault detection by using emission signal variation monitoring is vulnerable to background signal fluctuations. IR heaters are used in semiconductor manufacturing chambers where high temperature uniformity and fast response are required. During the process, the IR lamp output fluctuates to maintain a stable process temperature. This IR signal fluctuation reacts as a background signal fluctuation to the spectrometer. In this research, we evaluate the effect of infrared background signal fluctuation on plasma process monitoring and improve the plasma process monitoring accuracy by using simple infrared background signal subtraction method. The effect of infrared background signal fluctuation on plasma process monitoring was evaluated on $SiO_2$ PECVD process. Comparing the $SiO_2$ film thickness and the measured emission line intensity from the by-product molecules, the effect of infrared background signal on plasma process monitoring and the necessity of background signal subtraction method were confirmed.

  • The purpose of this study was to measured the diameter, maximum diameter, maximum area and volume of the cerebral aneurysm in 53 patients who underwent three-dimensional digital angiography and three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography, which were used for the clinical diagnosis of cerebral aneurysm, image noise and radiation exposure dose of each test method were analyzed to compare clinical diagnosis differences in the cerebral aneurysm diagnosis. Three-dimensional digital angiography and three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography showed that the neck diameter, maximum diameter, maximum area, volume, and noise of the cerebral aneurysm were identical or very small. However, the three-dimensional digital angiography significantly decreased the radiation exposure dose compared to three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography. Therefore, in case of clinical diagnosis of cerebral aneurysm, three-dimensional digital angiography should be preferentially used to reduce radiation exposure dose of patient.

  • Background subtraction is mainly used for the real-time extraction and tracking of moving objects from image sequences. In the outdoor environment, there are many changeable factor such as gradually changing illumination, swaying trees and suddenly moving objects, which are to be considered for the adaptive processing. Normally, GMM(Gaussian Mixture Model) is used to subtract the background adaptively considering the various changes in the scenes, and the adaptive GMMs improving the real-time performance were worked. This paper, for on-line background subtraction, applied the improved adaptive GMM, which uses the small constant for learning rate ${\alpha}$ and is not able to speedily adapt the suddenly movement of objects, So, this paper proposed and evaluated the dynamic control method of ${\alpha}$ using the adaptive selection of the number of component distributions and the global variances of pixel values.

  • The purpose of this study was to get reflections on teaching numbers and operations for special education from analyzing lessons for counting, addition and subtraction of natural number with counting board for students with autism. In order to attain these purposes, this study analyzed the lessons for counting, addition and subtraction of natural number to students with autism in 4th and 6th graders in special class at regular elementary school using counting board for one hour per week for 30 weeks. According to the analysis, counting board that reveals the structure of numbers becomes an effective mathematical materials, and using the counting strategy and computation strategy can be an effective method of teaching, and it is possible to teach mathematical communication to students with autism. From this result, this study presented suggestions for teaching counting, addition and subtraction for students with disabilities.

  • In this paper, we present a robust hand recognition approach to sudden illumination changes. The proposed approach constructs a background model with respect to hue and hue gradient in HSI color space and extracts a foreground hand region from an input image using the background subtraction method. Eighteen features are defined for a hand pose and multi-class SVM(Support Vector Machine) approach is applied to learn and classify hand poses based on eighteen features. The proposed approach robustly extracts the contour of a hand with variations in illumination by applying the hue gradient into the background subtraction. A hand pose is defined by two Eigen values which are normalized by the size of OBB(Object-Oriented Bounding Box), and sixteen feature values which represent the number of hand contour points included in each subrange of OBB. We compared the RGB-based background subtraction, hue-based background subtraction and the proposed approach with sudden illumination changes and proved the robustness of the proposed approach. In the experiment, we built a hand pose training model from 2,700 sample hand images of six subjects which represent nine numerical numbers from one to nine. Our implementation result shows 92.6% of successful recognition rate for 1,620 hand images with various lighting condition using the training model.
