Foreground/background segmentation in video sequences is often one of the first tasks in machine vision applications, making it a critical part of the system. In this paper, we present an improved sample-based technique that provides robust background image as well as segmentation mask. The conventional multiple interval sampling (MIS) algorithm have suffer from the unbalance of computation time per frame and the rapid change of confidence factor of background pixel. To balance the computation amount, a random-based pixel update scheme is proposed and a spatial and temporal smoothing technique is adopted to increase reliability of the confidence factor. The proposed method allows the sampling queue to have more dispersed data in time and space, and provides more continuous and reliable confidence factor. Experimental results revealed that our method works well to estimate stable background image and the foreground mask.
This paper proposes an observation probability smoothing technique for the robustness of a discrete hidden Markov(DHMM) model based speech recognizer. Also, an appropriate noise robust processing in car environment is suggested from experimental results. The noisy speech is often mislabeled during the vector quantization process. To reduce the effects of such mislabelings, the proposed technique increases the observation probability of similar codewords. For the noise robust processing in car environment, the liftering on the distance measure of feature vectors, the high pass filtering, and the spectral subtraction methods are examined. Recognition experiments on the 14-isolated words consists of the Korean digits and command words were performed. The database was recorded in a stopping car and a running car environments. The recognition rates of the baseline recognizer were 97.4% in a stopping situation and 59.1% in a running situation. Using the proposed observation probability smoothing technique, the liftering, the high pass filtering, and the spectral subtraction the recognition rates were enhanced to 98.3% in a stopping situation and to 88.6% in a running situation.
The purpose of this study was to measured the diameter, maximum diameter, maximum area and volume of the cerebral aneurysm in 53 patients who underwent three-dimensional digital angiography and three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography, which were used for the clinical diagnosis of cerebral aneurysm, image noise and radiation exposure dose of each test method were analyzed to compare clinical diagnosis differences in the cerebral aneurysm diagnosis. Three-dimensional digital angiography and three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography showed that the neck diameter, maximum diameter, maximum area, volume, and noise of the cerebral aneurysm were identical or very small. However, the three-dimensional digital angiography significantly decreased the radiation exposure dose compared to three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography. Therefore, in case of clinical diagnosis of cerebral aneurysm, three-dimensional digital angiography should be preferentially used to reduce radiation exposure dose of patient.

This paper proposes the extraction of coronary arteries based on DSA(Digital Subtraction Angiography) through a texture analysis of background in the angiography. DSA is a well established modality for the visualization of coronary arteries. DSA involves the subtraction of a mask image - an image of the heart before injection of contrast medium - from live image. However, this technique is sensitive to the movement of background and can result to a wrong detection by the variance of background gray-level intensity between two images. Therefore, this paper solves a structural problem resulted from a background movement bV selecting an image which has the least difference of movement through an analysis of the similarity of background texture and proposes a method to extract only the blood vessel efficiently through local gray-level correction of the selected image. Using the coronary angiogram of 5 patients clinical data, we proved that the proposed method has the lower false-detection rate, approximately $2\%$, and the higher accuracy than the existing methods.
Background: To minimize damage to the ovarian reserve, it is necessary to evaluate the follicular density in the ovarian tissue surrounding endometriosis on preoperative imaging. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the usefulness of subtraction pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect ovarian reserve. Methods: A subtracted T1-weighted image (subT1WI) was obtained by subtracting unenhanced T1WI from contrast-enhanced T1WI (ceT1WI) with similar parameters in 22 patients with ovarian endometriosis. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in ovarian endometriosis, which was classified into the high signal intensity and iso-to-low signal intensity groups on the T2-weighted image, was compared to that in normal ovarian tissue. To evaluate the effect of contrast enhancement, a standardization map was obtained by dividing subT1WI by ceT1WI. Results: On visual assessment of 22 patients with ovarian endometriosis, 16 patients showed a high signal intensity, and 6 patients showed an iso-to-low signal intensity on T1WI. Although SNR in endometriosis with a high signal intensity was higher than that with an iso-to-low signal intensity, there was no difference in SNR after the subtraction (13.72±77.55 vs. 63.03±43.90, p=0.126). The area of the affected ovary was smaller than that of the normal ovary (121.10±22.48 vs. 380.51±75.87 ㎟, p=0.002), but the mean number of pixels in the viable remaining tissue of the affected ovary was similar to that of the normal ovary (0.53±0.09 vs. 0.47±0.09, p=0.682). Conclusion: The subtraction technique used with pelvic MRI could reveal the extent of endometrial invasion of the normal ovarian tissue and viable remnant ovarian tissue.

In the image processing for VS (Video Surveillance), the detection of moving entities in a monitored scene is an important step. A background subtraction technique has been widely employed to find the moving entities. However, the extracted foreground regions often include not only real entities but also their cast shadows, and this can cause errors in following image processing steps, such as tracking, recognition, and analysis. In this paper, a novel technique is proposed to determine the shadow pixels of moving objects in the foreground image of a VS camera. Compared to existing techniques where the same decision criteria are applied to all moving pixels, the proposed technique determines shadow pixels using local features based on two facts: First, the amount of pixel intensity drop due to a shadow depends on the intensity level of background. Second, the distribution pattern of pixel intensities remains even if a shadow is cast. The proposed method has been tested at various situations with different backgrounds and moving humans in different colors.
On today, human is going to develop machine by using mutual communication to machine. Including vision - based HCI(Human Computer Interaction), the technique which to recognize finger and to track finger is important in HCI systems, in HCI systems. In order to divide finger, this paper uses more effectively dividing the technique using subtraction which is separation of background and foreground, as well as to divide finger from limited background and cluttered background. In order to divide finger, the finger is recognized to make "Template-Matching" by identified fingertip images. And, identified gestures be compared the tracked gesture after tracking recognized finger. In this paper, after obtaining interest area, not only using subtraction image and template-matching but to perform template-matching in the area. So, emphasis is placed on decreasing perform speed and reaction speed, and we propose technique which is more effectively recognizing gestures.
This study described a method of thermoluminescence dating of pottery shards using subtraction method. TL measurement was achieved using two different types of samples prepared by quartz inclusion method and fine-grain technique. Fine grains (size range: $5-10{\mu}m$) were separated by suspending grounded pottery samples into acetone solution and sedimentation quantitatively. In quartz inclusion method quartz grains in the size range of 90 to $125{\mu}m$ diameter were obtained by extracting the quartz crystals embed in the pottery shards and etching them with 1.0 M HF solutions. The archaeological dose of both the quartz and fine grains was determined from the dose calibration curves obtained from sequential irradiation of $^{137}Cs$ gamma and $^{241}Am$ alpha source to the samples and TL measurement of natural samples, in which the alpha dose of 4.60 Gy for the Packjae pottery was obtained using subtraction method. Annual alpha dose rates ($3.05{\pm}0.11$ mGy/yr.) were determined by the analysis of U, Th contents in the pottery shards and evaluation of the values with Bell's equation. Dividing the alpha dose accumulated in the pottery shards by the annual alpha dose rate, we found age of approximately $1508{\pm}80$ years B.P. (AD. ca. 492 yr.) for the Packjae pottery. It matches well with the archeological age estimate (middle of 5th century) within 10 percent uncertainty and thereby conforms the age of the pottery sample.
