  • Osmotic pressure induced by semi-permeability of hardened cement pasts and cement mortar was studied, which was considered to be a cause of failure such as separation and blistering of floor coatings or wall coatings from the concrete substrate. The specimens with a water cement ratio of 45, 60 and 75% were installed between the solution of sodium chloride and distilled water. First, we measured water flux from distilled water to sodium chloride and the ion flux of Na+ and Cl- through the specimens. Then, we measured osmotic pressure induced by semi-permeability of the specimens using an apparatus which was specially developed for this study. It was made clear that hardened cement paste and cement mortar have properties of semipermeability, and the osmotic pressure is closely related to their water cement ratio. Finally, we calculated the osmotic pressure according to Staverman's equation, which was obtained for organic membranes, and tried to explain quantitatively the observed pressure.

  • CFRP strips manufactured in factory are produced normally with smaller width and larger thickness than CFRP sheets. By this reason, bonding force between CFRP strips and concrete substrate is not sufficient to sustain tensile force in CFRP strips. Therefore premature debonding failure cannot be avoided when strengthening is done by simply bonding the CFRP strips. The flexural strength of RC beam strengthened with CFRP strips must be calculated based on the effective strain considering debonding failure. This paper presents test results of an experimental study conducted to evaluate the flexural strength on RC beams strengthened with CFRP strips. 7 specimens were tested with respect to bond length and amount of CFRP strips. From the test results, it was indicated that the strain of the CFRP strips achieved at debonding failure can be decreased less than 6,000$\mu$ depending on the amount of CFRP strips.

  • LEFC(Light Emotion Friendly Conceret) was developed in Korea with demands of esthentic requirements in line with the recent developmental trend of concrete technology. The LEFC is made by inserting transparent transparent rods, and this forms a heterogeneous structure in the concrete matrix causing the LEFC substrate to crack due low adhesion between the rod and the cement. In this study, as a way to strengthen the bonding to the rod inserted in the LEFC, high strength vinylon fibers of varying mixture ratios were applied and physical properties were tested accordingly. To study the effect of different spacing of the bars on the LEFC, physical property testing was conducted on respective specimens with two different diameters (5mm, 10mm) inserted in different intervals of spacing (10mm, 15mm, and 20mm).

  • CFRP plates has been established as an effective method for rehabilitation and strengthening of concrete structures. The CFRP reinforcements are bonded to beams and slabs using structural adhesives. Adhesive strength can be affected by environmental exposure. During freezing-and-thawing cycling, temperature-induced stresses in the adhesive layer, due to differential thermal expansion between the CFRP and the substrate concrete, may lead to bond damage and contribute to or cause premature CFRP composite separation. This paper presents the results of experimental program undertaken to investigate the effects of freeze-thaw cycling (from -18 to $4^{\circ}C$) on the behavior and failure characteristics of RC beams strengthened in shear with CFRP plate using acoustic emission (AE) technique.

  • In this study, a numerical simulation that can effectively predict the strengthening effect of repaired aged RC structures is developed using the axial deformation link elements. In repaired structures, concrete and interface are modeled as quasi-brittle materials. An elastic-perfectly plastic constitutive relationship is introduced for reinforcing bars. Also, a linear-elastic relationship for repair materials such as FRP or CFS. Structural deterioration in terms of corrosion of steel rebar is considered. The interfacial property between steel and concrete which is reduced by corrosion of steel rebar is obtained by comparing numerical results with experimental results of pull out tests. Obtained values are used in repaired reinforced concrete structures under flexural loading conditions. To investigate strengthening effect of the structures repaired with carbon fiber sheet(CFS), repaired and unrepaired RC structures are analyzed numerically. From analysis, rip-off, debonding and rupture failure mechanisms of interface between substrate and CFS can be determined. Finally, strengthening effect according to the variation of interfacial material properties is investigated, and it is shown that interfacial material properties have influence on the mechanical behavior of repaired structure systems Therefore, the developed numerical method using axial deformation link elements can use for determining the strengthening effects and failure mechanism of repaired aged RC structure.

  • This paper investigates the effect of utilizing vacuum bagging process to enhance the bond behavior between fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites and concrete substrate. Sixty specimens were prepared and tested using double-shear bond test. The effect of various parameters such as vacuum, fiber type, and FRP sheet length and width on the bond strength were investigated. The experimental results revealed that utilizing vacuum leads to improve the bond behavior between FRP composites and concrete. Both the ultimate bond forces and the maximum displacements were enhanced when applying the vacuum which leads to reduction in the amount of FRP materials needed to achieve the required bond strength compared with the un-vacuumed specimens. The efficiency of the enhancement in bond behavior due to vacuum highly depends on the fiber type; using carbon fiber showed higher enhancement in the bond strength compared to the glass fiber when vacuum was applied. On the contrary, specimens with glass fiber showed higher enhancement in the maximum slippage compared to specimens with carbon fibers. Utilizing vacuum does not affect the debonding failure modes but lead to increase in the amount of attached concrete on the surface of the debonded FRP sheet.

  • This study is interested in manufacturing the self-cleaning silicate concrete surface impregnant including tetra ethyl ortho silicate, lithium silicate for the repair of the exposed concrete surface and the color concrete requiring the advanced function in view of the concrete appearance. The concrete surface layer change and static contact angel was tested for the review of application. The result of this study shows that the effective silicate is tetra ethyl ortho silicate and lithium silicate. The adhesion in tension is satisfied with performance requirement of KS standard but the reinforcement of concrete substrate is slight. So, The self-cleaning silicate concrete impregnant of this study is more desirable for the improvement of durability rather than the reinforcement.

  • In the present research work, the effectiveness and the efficiency of a retrofitting approach using a layer of ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) jacket for damaged substandard exterior beam-column joints (BCJs) is experimentally investigated. The main objective of this study is to rehabilitate the already damaged BCJs to meet the serviceability requirements without compromising safety. According to the proposed strengthening technique, a chipped surface, lightly brushed with a dry condition was selected for making a successful bond between normal concrete substrate surface (NCSS) and UHPFRC. Then a fresh UHPFRC jacket with a thickness of 30 mm was cast around the damaged specimens. The entire test matrix was comprised of three 1/3 scale damaged exterior BCJs with a different column axial load (CAL). These specimens were repaired with UHPFRC and retested under monotonic loading. Based on the experimental results, repaired specimens showed an excellent performance in terms of their load-displacement response, maximum strength, displacement ductility, initial stiffness, secant stiffness and energy dissipation capacity when compared with the corresponding values registered when these specimens were tested in their virgin state. This rehabilitative intervention not only restored the strength, stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of severely damaged specimens but also improved their performance.
