Preparation and Characterization of LiMn₂O₄ Powder by Combustion of Poly(ethylene glycol)-Metal Nitrate Precursor

  • $LiMn_2O_4$ powders were prepared by burning and subsequent calcination of PEG-metal nitrate precursor. After the burning stage of the precursor, some minor phases such as $Mn_2O_3$ (or $Mn_3O_4$), MnO, and carbonate were formed and single phases of $LiMn_2O_4$ were obtained by further calcinations above 400 ℃. From thermal analysis of the precursor, a violent thermal decomposition, which was indicated by a drastic weight loss accompanied by a sharp and strong exothermic peak, was observed and probably caused by an oxidation-reduction reaction between oxidizer and fuel. The formation of the minor phases could be explained in terms of the burning behavior of the precursor by employing valence concepts of propellant chemistry. The calcined powders were composed of submicron-sized but highly agglomerated particles and showed very broad particle size distribution.

  • Filtration efficiency tests were conducted on a fiberglass mat filter with DOP aerosol having a diameter from 0.l${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 0.45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in the face velocity range of 1cm/sec to 10cm/sec. Filtration of submicron particles by a fibrous filter is characterized by a face velocity. The size of DOP aerosol which has a minimum removal efficiency decreases with increasing the velocity. A numerical solution of the diffusion equation is obtained for a fiberglass mat filter by using "Kuwabara's cell model" for the flow field and Von Mises Transformation for the actual flow around a fiberglass. The present theoretical results agree quite well with the experimentals for fiberglass mat. This result could be contributed to predict the removal efficiency on an air filter and to optimize the operating condition of an air purification system with a filter. a filter.

  • Cascade impactors are widely used to collect size classified aerosol. A major disadvantage of this instrument is the required long sampling time. Electrical low pressure impactor has been developed to overcome this disadvantage and to achieve real-time measurements on the particle size distribution. The instrument consists primarily of a corona charger, low pressure cascade impactor and multi channel electrometer. We designed and evaluated the performance of a potable 3-stage low pressure impactor using an electrical method. For the calibration of the impactor, monodispersed particles were generated using evaporation-condensation method followed by electrostatic classification using a DMA(Differential Mobility Analyzer). The collection efficiency curves of the stages can be determined by analysing the fraction of particles collected by each stage.

Characteristics of $La_{0.7}{Ca_{0.3}}{MnO_3}$Powders Prepared by Solution Combustion Method and Solid State Reaction Method for CMR Applications (용액연소법과 고상반응법으로 제조된 CMR용 $La_{0.7}{Ca_{0.3}}{MnO_3}$분말 특성)

  • La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$분말은 공기중에서 하소온도와 시간의 변화에 따라 각각 용액연소법과 고상반응법을 이용하여 제조되었다. 조성 및 구조 특성을 XRD와 SEM으로부터 조사하였으며 소결성은 dilatometer에 의해 조사되었다. 또한 분말 특성은 BET에 의해 조사되었고 분말의 하소온도는 TG 분석으로부터 결정되었다. 하소온도 및 시간이 증가함에 따라 La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$상의 XRD peak가 증가하였는데, 고상반응법을 이용한 경우 100$0^{\circ}C$에서 24시간 동안 하소해서야 겨우 La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$의 단상을 얻을 수 있었으나 용액연소법을 이용한 경우, $650^{\circ}C$에서 30분 동안 하소함으로써 submicron 입자크기를 갖는 단상이면서 초미세한 La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$분말을 쉽게 얻을 수 있었다. 또한 용액연소법에 의해 제조된 다결정인 La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$분말은 49.44$m^2$/g 정도의 매우 큰 비표면적을 얻을 수 있었다. 이 값은 고상반응법에 의해 제조된 분말의 비표면적 보다 매우 컸으며 이와 같으 사실로 인해 용액연소법에 의해 제조된 분말의 소결온도를 낮출 수 있었다. 분말의 소결온도를 낮출 수 있었다.

Preparation of Micro- and Submicron-Particles of a Poorly Water-Soluble Antifungal Drug Using Supercritical Fluid Process (초임계유체공정을 이용한 난용성 항진균제의 미세입자 제조)

  • In this study, micro- and submicron particles of itraconazole, a poorly water-soluble antifungal drug, were prepared for improving its aqueous solubility using an ultrasound-assisted supercritical fluid technique, called SAS-EM. The SAS-EM process used in our experiments was different from the conventional SAS-EM in that the ultrasound was applied directly to the spray nozzle. The effect of the ultrasonic power, temperature, and solvent on the formation of itraconazole particles were investigated. Smaller particles were obtained through our SAS-EM process compared with the ASES process, and the mean particle size decreased as the ultrasonic power increased. Our experimental results confirmed that the ultrasound-assisted supercritical fluid process is an efficient method for producing ultrafine particles.

  • In order to design light weight and high efficient electromagnetic wave absorbing materials, hollow magnetic particles have been introduced in this study. The electroless plating method has been utilized to coat Ni and Fe on the substrates of synthesized polystyrene particles of submicron size. Removing polystyrene particles by heat treatment resulted in hollow structures. Observation by SEM, TEM and EDS confirmed the surface morphology and coating thickness of Ni and Fe. Polymeric composites containing hollow particles were tested in order to compare the electromagnetic properties between Ni coated and Fe costed particles. The composite of 30 wt% Fe hollow particles showed the higher complex permeability than Ni hollow particles or the conventional barium ferrite particles.

  • Nickel powders were prepared from an aqueous nickel acetate solution and hydrazine hydrate using diethanolamine as the nonaqueous organic solvent in the conventional and microwave synthetic method. It was investigated that microwave non-thermal effect and synthetic condition affect the preparation of nickel powders by means of X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, thermal gravymetry analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Compared with the conventional synthetic method, less of aggregation, smaller particle size, and more uniform distribution of particle size were obtained in the microwave synthetic method due to the non-thermal effect of microwaves.

AN EVALUATION OF WEAR CHARACTERISTICS OF LIGHT-CURED RESTORATIVE COMPOSITES ON ENAMEL SURFACE (광중합형 복합레진과 법랑질간의 마모특성 평가)

  • This study was performed to evaluate wear characteristics of light-cured composites when opposed by human enamel. Seven light-cured restorative composites were selected and enamel cusps sectioned from premolars. All samples were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. 68.6 N of weight was loaded during the test. The measurements of vertical loss of enamel cusps, weight loss and volume loss of composites, and SEM observations of the polished and abraded surfaces were made after 30,000 cycles. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The highest hardness value of 70.4 was observed in the Spectrum group and the lowest value of 19.8 was observed in the Heliomolar group. Results of Tukey test showed that an overall significant difference was indicated except the Spectrum, Z100 and Clearfil AP-X groups(p<0.05). 2. Enamel showed the good abrasion resistance against the Heliomolar group of microfilled composite and the Palpique Toughwell group containing the submicron hybrid type spherical fillers. 3. The abrasive wear resistance of hybrid composites was improved with the decrease of mean particle size and hybrid of submicron particle fillers. 4. SEM observation of worn surfaces revealed the protrusion, attrition and missing of fillers, cracks developing and delamination in the matrix.

  • The phase behavior and dynamics of colloid suspensions and the resulting structures and properties of powder compacts were examined by a computer experimental method for cooperative packing processes. A wide range of properties and process conditions such as arbitrary particle size, medium densities, field strength, and temperature could be examined using the Peclet number (Pe). We demonstrated that an optimum range of Peclet number for the ordering of sediments was present and that the phenomena related to the ordering such as the onset of crystallization, the phase behavior, etc. strongly depend on process conditions. The present work appears to be useful to design the processing method of ceramic spherical submicron powders for the preparation of high-density green compacts.

Preparation and Characterization of Tributyrin Sub-micron Emulsion as Carrier for Paclitaxel

  • Paclitaxel is a well known anticancer agent and has been a pharmaceutical challenge because of its extremely poor water-solubility and susceptibility to the p-glycoprotein (p-gp)-mediated efflux in multi-drug resistant (MDR) cancer cells. Tributyrin (TB), a triglyceride with relatively short fatty acid chains, was chosen as solubilizing vehicle for paclitaxel based on the solubility study (26.6 mg/mL). Tributyrin (10%) o/w emulsion containing paclitaxel (5%), egg phosphatidylcholine (5%) and pegylated phospholipid (0.5%) was prepared by high pressure homogenization to obtain submicron-sized emulsion. The mean particle size of the resultant TB emulsion was 395.5 nm. Paclitaxel in TB emulsion showed higher anticancer activity against human breast cancer cell line, MCF-7, than free form delivered in DMSO solution. On the other hand, its anticancer activity was significantly reduced in MCF-7/ADR, a MDR variant cancer cell line of MCF-7, and recovered by the presence of verapamil, suggesting of the susceptibility to the p-gp mediated efflux even though paclitaxel was encapsulated into emulsion. The TB emulsion showed great potential as a promising vehicle for water-insoluble anticancer agent, paclitaxel.
