In this study, metrics for evaluation of heavy-weight impact noise were investigated. Heavy-weight impact noises generated by impact ball were recorded in real apartments using binaural microphone. Those sounds were classified into three groups according to frequency characteristics in order to control aspects which affect subjective responses to heavy-weight impact noise. Sound sources for auditory experiment were selected based on the classification result. Then auditory experiments were conducted to investigate the relationship between level indices and subjective responses. The results showed that $L_{Aeq},\;L_{Amax}$ and $LL_z$ as well as $L_{iFmax,AW}$ were highly correlated with subjective response. Therefore, $L_{Aeq}$ and $L_{Amax}$ can be used as metrics for evaluation of heavy-weight impact noise. In further studies, it is needed to verify classification of heavy-weight impact noise generated by bang machine and impact ball.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the thermophisiological responses and subjective wearing comfort for the six lining fabrics of one-piece dress in summer environment. There were significant differences in the microclimate, the mean skin temperature and the subjective wear comfort for the lining fabrics. The mean skin temperature of rayon and acetate were lower than that of synthetic fiber. The wearing comfort of rayon and acetate were better than that of synthetic fiber. There were clear correlations between the mechanical properties and the subjective wear comfort of lining fabrics. The hygroscopicity and density of textile affected the humidity and tactile sensation of dress, and they were important factors determining the wearing comfort of one-piece dress.
The effect of spatial factors on subjective responses to heavy-weight floor impact noise was investigated. Heavy-weight impact noises were generated and recorded in several apartments and a testing building using impact ball and binaural microphone to measure IACC of the noises. Just noticeable differences (JNDs) of IACC and SPL of heavy-weight impact noise were also investigated. Auditory experiments were conducted using method of limit. It was found that the JNDs of IACC and SPL were 0.12 and 1.5dB, respectively. Contribution of IACC and SPL to annoyance of heavy-weight floor impact noise is being further investigated.
The purpose of this study was to determine the physiological responses and subjective sensation according to fiber content of socks. Six female students participated in the wear trial test which was conducted in controled environmental chamber with 26${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$ and 60${\times}$3%. R.H.SAS program was used for statistical analysis. The results of this study were as follows. Mean skin temperature was significantly different among three different socks. AWNP socks had the highest mean skin temperature and instep temperature. Also relative humidity in the microclimate of socks as well as heart rate were influenced by fiber content of socks, However, test of subjective sensation such as thermal, humid, comfort sensation showed that there was no significant difference among three different socks thermal sensation during the exercise and recovery period.
The purpose of this study is to find out understand the resident's subjective responses to physical indoor environment. The questionnaire survey was carried out to measure form Jan. 8th to Feb. 2th in 1996, the typical external climate of winter in Korea. The subjects were four hundred and eleven housewives, living in apartments of RC structure I Ilsan apartment complex. As the result, residents usual ventilate once or twice a day by opening outward windows for about ten minutes. Unpleasant smell producted by cooking and wet garbage made most of them negatively respond to kitchen's air quality. regression analysis of relativeness between sense of air freshness smell, dust and comfort revealed that sense of comfort was the most highly related with the extent of bad smell. Housing factors such as size of apartments and ventilating, smoking and gas usage had significant effects on indoor air quality and the subjective responses in winter. Therefore it is especially important to consider air pollution problem from the beginning stage when planning small apartments. It is required that the government of environment has to emphasize the importance of ventilation to residents, and makes an effort to establish the design criteria on indoor air quality in house.
This paper introduces what amount of railway vibration level observed from residential area. Five residential area located near the railway were selected to measure the vibration levels generated by the different types of Korean railway vehicles. Those 3-axis vibration measurements are applied to the frequency-dependent weighting functions recommended by ISO 2631-2, which are used to evaluate the 3-axis combined vibration levels such as peak levels, L 10 levels and root-mean-squared values. These evaluated results are shown to indicate the environmental vibration severity for the different residential area. In addition to those physical vibration measurements, the survey of subjective responses of residents was also carried out by distributing the questionnaire suggested by WHO. The questionnaire includes the subjective scales for assessing the annoyance and the sleep-disturbance caused by the environmental vibration. The statistical analysis results collected from 386 respondents are introduced. The highly annoyed population and the highly sleep-disturbed one are examined to identify the .elation between their subjective scale and their corresponding environmental vibration levels. These attempts are shown to lead to the salient model to relate the environmental vibration level and the subjective responses of Korean residents to annoyance and sleep-disturbance.
It is well known that a long-term exposure to a loud noise environment affects performance, since it distracts attention, and also is able to evoke stress accompanied by negative emotional states. The purpose of this study was to analyze dynamics of subjective and physiological variables during long-lasting (30 min) exposure to intensive white noise (85 dB[A]). Physiological signals on 23 college students were recorded by BIOPAC, Grass Neurodata systems and AcqKnowledge 3.5 software. Autonomic variables, namely skin conductance level (SCL), non-specific SCR number (N-SCR), inter-beat intervals in ECG (RR intervals), heart rate variability index (HF/LF ratio of HRV), respiration rate (RESP), and skin temperature (SKT) were analyzed on 5 min epoch basis. Psychological assessment (subjective rating of stress level) was also repeated on every 5 min basis. Regression and correlation analyses were employed to trace the time course of the dynamics of the subjective and autonomic physiological variables and their relationship. Results showed that intense noise evokes subjective stress with associated autonomic nervous system responses. However, it was shown that physiological variables endure specific changes in the process of exposure to loud white noise. Discussed are probable psychophysiological mechanisms mediating reactivity to long-term auditory stimulation of high intensity.
The purpose of this study was to analyze and determine the relationship between physiological responses including blood flow rate and garment pressure, and the feeling of restrictive tightness associated with the wearing skinny pants as a popular clothing style. Evaluation was based on material type, posture and activity type, and body part location. Five female college students took part in this research. Five kinds of experimental clothes with waist measurements of 66cm were chosen. An analysis of the selected skinny pants demonstrated the degree of the whole looseness was higher in this order: clothing type A>B>D>C, and E with E being knitted cloth. Garment pressure was the highest in the front knee portions and was lowest in the outside thigh region. Garment pressure was highest in this sequence : clothing type C>=D>A>=B>E. In terms of posture and activity types, garment pressure was the highest when research participants were crouching, and was the lowest when standing. The blood flow rate was highest in this order: clothing type E>D>B>A>C. Type C skinny pants impeded blood flow and demonstrated the tightest and most restrictive relationship. Blood flow rate varied depending on the type of movement and was highest in this order: getting up, rowing, kicking, jumping and O-shaped leg posture. The results of subjective pressure evaluation demonstrated that pressure was highest in this order: E>=C>B>A>D. These results suggests the need to improve on the patterns and the material design in the area of the front knees. The degree of the looseness when wearing skinny pants did not always correspond to garment pressure or subjective sensation.
