  • This is the final report on the nomenclature of pyroxenes by the Subcommittee on Pyroxenes established by the Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names of the International Mineralogical Association. The recommendations of the Subcommittee as put forward in this report have been formally accepted by the Commission. Accepted and widely used names have been chemically defined, by combining new and conventional methods, to agree as far as possible with the consensus of present use. Twenty names are formally accepted, among which thirteen are used to represent the end members of definite chemical compositions. In common binary solid-solution series, species names are given to the two end members by the "50% rule." Adjectival modifiers for pyroxene mineral names are defined to indicate unusual amounts of chemical constituents. This report includes a list of 105 previously used pyroxene names that have been formally discarded by the Commission.

  • Laboratory medicine is a specialized division that supports physicians in the care of patients by providing rapid and accurate in vitro diagnostic tests. Standardization of every component of a specific test is essential for producing accurate results. The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) was founded to develop a formal consensus process for standardization in 1968, and has been publishing standards and guidelines covering all aspects of clinical, research, and other laboratory work. CLSI guidelines are widely used around the world for standardization. The CLSI antimicrobial susceptibility testing subcommittee (AST SC) consists of 6 standing and many ad hoc working groups. Members of the AST SC review submitted proposals and suggestions, decide on approving these submissions in face-to-face meetings held twice a year, and revise CLSI documents accordingly. As these face-to-face meetings are open to anyone who registers to attend, I strongly encourage the members of our Society to attend and actively participate in document development.

  • Educational evaluation involves data collection and the analysis of various education-related factors to make decisions that improve educational quality. Systematic educational evaluation is essential for enhancing the quality of education. This study reports a case of student-conducted process evaluation of a medical school's student support system and the procedure for devising improvement plans. Sixteen Inje University College of Medicine students participated in the Education Evaluation Committee (IUCM-EEC) to understand the educational improvement process as learners and actively achieve improvement. The Quality Improvement Committee of the Inje University College of Medicine (IUCM-QIC) decided to reform its student support system based on a previous educational evaluation in 2019. The evaluation of the student support system was conducted for 10 months in 2021 by the student subcommittee, under the guidance of the IUCM-EEC. The CIPP (context-input-process-product) evaluation model was used for a systematic evaluation. Accordingly, the subcommittee developed evaluation criteria and indicators, and analyzed relevant data collected from surveys and the previous literature. For further recommendations and revision ideas, the student subcommittee members interviewed faculty members from six other medical schools and also conducted a focus group interview with the dean and vice deans of IUCM. Finally, the student subcommittee submitted a report to the IUCM-QIC. Communication with various stakeholders is essential for a successful evaluation process. In this case, students, as key stakeholders in education, evaluated the student support system. Their active participation helped improve their understanding of the evaluation process.

  • In the past several years there has been relying on USA fur the resource of global positioning data in the pluralistic GNSS environment(Galileo, Post GPS, Quasi-Zenith Satellite System). For this reason, we should make a decision which strategy for research is carried out. According to a diversity of resource for obtaining positioning data, well organized research support at government level for efficient using is required. Specially, it is very Important that subcommittee for research organized with National GIS Promotion Committee as a leader make counterplan strategy. We have obtained an conclusion that we can make a good decision by establishing Spatial Information Expert Group and selection of essential element of technology.

Overall 17, 520 cases of surgery [11, 732 cases of thoracic surgery by 54 institutes / 5, 788 cases of cardiovascular surgery by 48 institutes] were done. 1. Tumor [N=2, 532] : Lung was the most frequently involved organ by tumor [54.9%],and the remainders were mediastinum [16.2%] / esophagus [14.8%] / chest wall [11.7%] / tracheobronchus [1.3%] / pleura [1.1%] in order. Of 1, 082 cases of primary lung cancer surgery, the frequency of cell type was squamous [62.6%] / adeno [21.6%] / small cell [7.1%] / large cell [2.7%]. Of 411 cases of mediastinal tumor surgery, the frequency of cell type was neurogenic [28.8%] / thymoma [27.6%] / teratoma [17.7%] / congenital cystic [17.2%]. Of 376 cases of esophageal tumor surgery, primary cancer were the most [85.4%]. 2. Infection [N=3, 157] : Pleura was the most frequently involved organ [59.0%],and the remainders were lung [31.3%] / chest wall [8.6%] / mediastinum [1.1%] in order. 3. Miscellaneous [N=6, 043] : Lung and pleural disease esp. pneumothorax [85.1%] was the most frequent surgical indication. The remainders were chest wall anomaly [3.4%] / benign esophageal disease [3.4%] / diaphragmatic pathology [2.4%] / myasthenia [1.4%] in order. Of 85 cases of thymectomy for myasthenia gravis, thymoma was noted in 58.8%. 1. Congenital heart disease [N=3, 363] : The ratio of noncyanotic to cyanotic heart disease was 3:1. Of 2, 516 cases of noncyanotic heart disease, the frequency of disease entity was VSD [44.1%] / ASD [26.0%] / PDA [19.4%] / PS [3.3%],and that of 847 cases of cyanotic heart disease was TOF [29.4%] / ECD [15.6%] / TGA [9.7%] / DORV [7.6%]. Overall mortalities were 2.1% in noncyanotic and 12.2% in cyanotic heart surgery. 2. Acquired heart disease [N=1, 929] : Of 1, 422 cases of valvular surgery, single mitral pathology was the most frequent candidate [48.0%],and total 1, 574 prosthetic valves which were mainly mechanical [95.6%] were used. Of 376 cases of coronary surgery, triple vessel was the most [35.9%],and the frequency of bypassing grafts was great saphenous vein [52.9%] / internal mammary artery [44.7%] / artificial vessel [2.4%]. Overall mortalities were 3.4% in valvular and 4.5% in coronary surgery. 3. Pericardium,Cardiac tumor,Arrhythmia,Aortic aneurysm,Assist device, and Pacemaker : There were no specific changes compared to previous survey1]. This nation-wide inquiry will be continued and reported annually by KTCS Society.

  • Purpose: To date, there is no region-specific guideline for pediatric endoscopy training. This study aimed to illustrate the current status of pediatric endoscopy training in Asia-Pacific region and identify opportunities for improvement. Methods: A cross-sectional survey, using a standardized electronic questionnaire, was conducted among medical schools in the Asia-Pacific region in January 2024. Results: A total of 57 medical centers in 12 countries offering formal Pediatric Gastroenterology training programs participated in this regional survey. More than 75% of the centers had an average case load of <10 cases per week for both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies. Only 36% of the study programs employed competency-based outcomes for program development, whereas nearly half (48%) used volume-based curricula. Foreign body retrieval, polypectomy, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, and esophageal variceal hemostasis, that is, sclerotherapy or band ligation (endoscopic variceal sclerotherapy and endoscopic variceal ligation), comprised the top four priorities that the trainees should acquire in the autonomous stage (unconscious) of competence. Regarding the learning environment, only 31.5% provided formal hands-on workshops/simulation training. The direct observation of procedural skills was the most commonly used assessment method. The application of a quality assurance (QA) system in both educational and patient care (Pediatric Endoscopy Quality Improvement Network) aspects was present in only 28% and 17% of the centers, respectively. Conclusion: Compared with Western academic societies, the limited availability of cases remains a major concern. To close this gap, simulation and adult endoscopy training are essential. The implementation of reliable and valid assessment tools and QA systems can lead to significant development in future programs.
