The purpose of this study is to examine appropriate sub-basin division numbers that best reflect the hydrological characteristics of the basin so as to propose the criterion for dividing the sub-basin in analyzing flood runoff in the future. The characteristics of flood runoff variations were based on the WMS HEC-1 model, and the area in the upstream of the Dongbyeon water level observatory and the Geum-ho water level observatory was chosen for analysis, and examined the characteristics of the changes in flood runoff. First of all, in the targeted basin, if the sub-basin division number was 4 (that is, the area of the divided sub-basin was about 25% of the total area). Next, as the sub-basin division number gradually increased, the peak rate of runoff increased as well, and in case the sub-basin was not divided, the peak rate of runoff occurred at the earliest time. Given these results, the spatial change characteristics will be best reflected when the sub-basin is divided for analysis of flood runoff in such a way that the area of the divided sub-basin is about 25% of the total area of the basin. However, as these results are based on a limited number (4) of storms, more storm events and other basins need to be included in the review of the sub-basin division methodology.

Six gas samples were collected from coal and coaly shale from core AA-1, which was acquired from the Asem-Asem Basin, southeast Kalimantan, Indonesia. These coalbed gas samples were analyzed for the molecular composition, carbon isotope (δ13CCH4, δ13CC2, and δ13CCO2), hydrogen isotope (δDCH4), hydrocarbon index (CHC), and carbon dioxide-methane index (CDMI) to document their origin and methanogenic pathways. Core AA-1 successively consists of lower clastic sedimentary rocks (Sedimentary Unit-1, SU-1) containing coal and coaly shale, and upper limestone (Sedimentary Unit-2, SU-2), unconformably underlain by serpentinized basement interpreted as part of the Cretaceous Meratus subduction complex (MSC). The coal and coaly shale (SU-1) were deposited in a marshes nearby a small-scale river. Compositions of coalbed gases show that methane ranges from 87.35 to 95.29% and ethane ranges from 3.65 to 9.97%. Carbon isotope of coalbed methane (δ13CCH4) ranges from -60.3 to -58.8‰, while hydrogen isotope (δDCH4) ranges from -252.9 to -252.1‰. Carbon isotope of coalbed ethane (δ13CC2) ranges from -32.8 to -31.2‰, carbon isotope of coalbed carbon dioxide (δ13CCO2) ranges from -8.6 to -6.2‰. The coalbed CO2 is interpreted to be an abiogenic origin based on a combination of δ13CCO2 and CDMI and could have been transported from underlying CO2 bearing MSC through faults. The methanogenic pathways of coalbed gases are interpreted to have originated from primary methyl-type fermentation and mixed with CO2 reduction, affecting thermogenic non-marine coal-type gases based on analyses of isotopic ratios and various indexes.

Implemented since 2004, TPLC (Total Pollution Load Control) is the most powerful water-quality protection program. Recently, uncertainty of prediction using steady state model increased due to changing water environments, and necessity of a dynamic state model, especially the watershed model, gained importance. For application of watershed model on TPLC, it needs to be feasible to adjust the relationship (mass-balance) between discharged loads estimated by technical guidance, and arrived loads based on observed data at the watershed outlet. However, at HSPF, simulation is performed as a semi-distributed model (lumped model) in a sub-basin. Therefore, if the estimated discharged loads from individual pollution source is directly entered as the point source data into the RCHRES module (without delivery ratio), the pollutant load is not reduced properly until it reaches the outlet of the sub-basin. The hypothetic RCHRES generated using the HSPF BMP Reach Toolkit was applied to solve this problem (although this is not the original application of Reach Toolkit). It was observed that the impact of discharged load according to spatial distribution of pollution sources in a sub-basin, could be expressed by multi-segmentation of the hypothetical RCHRES. Thus, the discharged pollutant load could be adjusted easily by modification of the infiltration rate or characteristics of flow control devices.

This study was investigated to estimate optimal conditions and biological oxic denitrification to treat wastewater with low C/N ratio and high strength total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) concentration by using $A_2O$ fixed biofilm system. The lab-scale experimental system packed with media, which were composed of polyvinylidene chloride fiber (oxic basin) and ceramic ball (anaerobic and anoxic basin), was used. This system was operated with various influent alkalinities at the C/N(TOC/TIN) ratio of 0.5. The study results showed that TOC were removed over 96.0% at all operation conditions. The removal efficiencies over 93.5% for $NH_4{^+}-N$ and 81.8% for TIN were obtained at the alkalinity of about 1210mg/L(Run 5). Among the removal of TIN, 64.9% was occurred by biological denitrification at an oxic basin. It was confirmed through mass balance of alkalinity and nitrogen that the amount of alkalinity produced during biological denitrification at oxic basin was 2.49~3.46 mg Alkalinity/mg $NO_2{^-}-N$, ${\Delta}TOC/{\Delta}DEN$ of 0.34 (Run 5) was obtained at an oxic basin, which was less than the theoretical value of 1.22.
Many researches have been conducting on extracting geometry data and hydrologic parameters by using GIS technique. However, there is no clear standard on those methods yet. This study examines the changing pattern of runoff responses characteristics with applying lumped model on divided watershed. WMS is used in order to divide watershed and calculate hydrologic geometry data and parameters by GIS technique. HEC-1 is adopted as a hydrologic model to establish runoff responses. The basin is divided into small watersheds, which are approximately same size. This research conducted runoff response simulation of Pyoungchang River and Wichon River Basin. Especially, research was focused on what is the most appropriate level as a divined sub-basin, and tested the effect of size of sub-basin for the runoff response simulation. The results showed the size of sub-basin was not an important factor for the simulation results after a certain size. The results of this study can be applied as an appropriate guidance to select optimal simulation size of watershed for the lumped model in a specific watershed.
SWAT model was applied for the Nakdong River Basin to characterize water quality variability and assess the feasibility of using the load duration curve to water quality management. The basin was divided into 67 sub-basins considering various watershed environment, and rainfall runoff and pollutant loading were simulated based on 6 year measurements of meteo-hydrological data, discharge data of treatment plants, and water quality data (SS, T-N and T-P). The results demonstrate that non-point source loads during wet season increase by 80 ~ 95% of total loads. Although the rate of water flow governs the amount of SS that is transported to the main streams, nutrient concentrations are highly elevated during dry season by being concentrated. This phenomenon is more pronounced in the lower basin, receiving large amounts of urban point source discharges such as treated sewages. Also, the load duration curves (LDC) demonstrate dominant source problems based on the load exceedances, showing that SS concentrations are associated with the rainy season and nutrients, such as T-P, may be more concentrated at low flow and more diluted at higher flow. Overall, the LDC method could be used conveniently to assess watershed characteristics and pollutant loads in watershed scale.

Flash floods are one of the types of natural hazards which has severe consequences. Flash floods cause high mortality, about 5,000 deaths a year worldwide. Flash floods usually occur in mountainous areas in conditions where the soil is highly saturated and also when heavy rainfall happens in a short period of time. The magnitude of a flash flood depends on several natural and human factors, including: rainfall duration and intensity, antecedent soil moisture conditions, land cover, soil type, watershed characteristics, land use. Among these rainfall intensity and antecedent soil moisture, play the most important roles, respectively. Flash Flood Guidance is the amount of rainfall of a given duration over a small stream basin needed to create minor flooding (bank-full) conditions at the outlet of the stream basin. In this study, the Sejong University Rainfall-Runoff model (SURR model) was used to calculate soil moisture along with FFG in order to identify flash flood events for the Geum basin. The division of Geum river basin led to 177 head-water catchments, with an average of 38 km2. the soil moisture of head-water catchments is considered the same as sub-basin. The study has measured the threshold of flash flood generation by GIUH method. Finally, the flash flood events were used for verification of FFG. The results of the validation of seven past independent events of flash flood events are very satisfying.

The emission characteristics and emission factors were determined by measuring the concentration of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), the amount of ventilation, etc. in the two fattening rooms which have the same environment in winter. As a result of monitoring, the average concentration of CH4 and N2O was 20.7-26.7 ppm and 1.4-1.6 ppm. The average temperature inside the room was measured at 20.0-21.4℃, and the average ventilation was 1345.4-1567.3 m3/h. The daily emission of CH4 for the first 30 days showed a constant emission of 3.6-8.2 g/d/m2/pig, but thereafter, the emission increased rapidly. The daily emission of N2O was 0.7-1.3 g/d/m2/pig, showing stable emission during the test period, and relatively insignificant emission compared to the emission of CH4. After repeated test, it was confirmed that there was no significant difference between the two rooms. As a result, the CH4 6. 21 g/d/m2/pig and N2O 1.02 g/d/m2/pig average emission for each room was derived.

Owing to the abnormal weather conditions due to global warming, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology has attracted global attention as a countermeasure to reduce CO2 emissions. In the Pohang CCS demonstration project in South Korea, 100 tons of CO2 were successfully injected into the subsurface CO2 storage in early 2017. However, after the 2017 Pohang earthquake, the Pohang CCS demonstration project was suspended due to an increase in social concerns about the safety of the CCS project. In this study, to reconfirm the structural suitability of the CO2 storage site in the Pohang Basin, we employed seismic imaging based on reverse-time migration (RTM) to analyze small-scale ocean-bottom seismic data, which have not been utilized in previous studies. Compared with seismic images using marine streamer data, the continuity of subsurface layers in the RTM image using the ocean-bottom seismic data is improved. Based on the obtained subsurface image, we discuss the structural suitability of the Pohang CO2 storage site.
To identify and interpret the distribution and the characteristics of the gas hydrate layers in the Ulleung Basin, we have surveyed and gathered the multi-channel seismic data, Chirp sub-bottom profiler, SeaBeam and 12 m piston core samples since 1996. In previous works, high-resolution seismic profiles showed acoustic anomalies such as acoustic void, acoustic turbidity and pock mark which indicate the presence of gas-charged sediments. The patterns of horizontal degassing cracks originated from free methane expansion is the strong indicator of shallow gas-charged sediments in the core samples. The observation of submarine slides and slumps from destabilizing the sediments in the southern part of the Ulleung Basin may also point out that the gas had been released from gas hydrate dissociation during lowstand of sea level. The multi-channel seismic data show BSR, blanking and phase reversal. The gas hydrate layers above which large-scale shallow gases are distributed exist at the depth of about 200 m from the sea-floor with water depth of 2,100 m. From the interpretation of seismic sections in the southern Ulleung Basin, gas hydrate layers occur in the Pleistocene-Holocene sediments. These gas-charged sediments, acoustic anomalies and BSR may be all related to the existence of gas hydrate layers in the study area.
