This study evaluated the acoustic performance of two configurations of serial HR arrays and lined HR arrays in the presence of grazing flow using a 3D numerical simulation. The dual, triple, and quad HR arrays were compared to the conventional HR array. The simulation results showed that the number of resonant frequencies increased with the number of serial HR arrays. The CTL did not significantly change with the number of serial HR arrays. The acoustic performance of the two, three, and four-lined HR arrays was compared to the conventional HR array. The results showed that the resonant frequency and TLmax increased with the number of lined HR arrays. The CTL also increased with the number of lined HR arrays. The effect of the grazing flow Mach number (Ma) was investigated on the four-lined HR array configuration and compared to the conventional HR configuration. TLmax and CTL decreased for both configurations with increasing Ma. The four-lined HR array configuration had significantly better acoustic performance than the conventional HR configuration. The TLmax and CTL increased by more than 300% when the configuration was changed from the conventional HR to the four-lined HR array at Ma = 0.The increment percentage decreased with increasing Ma.
One-dimensional (1D) piezoelectric nanostructures are attractive candidates for energy generation because of their excellent piezoelectric properties attributed to their high aspect ratios and large surface areas. Vertically grown BaTiO3 nanotube (NT) arrays on conducting substrates are intensively studied because they can be easily synthesized with excellent uniformity and anisotropic orientation. In this study, we demonstrate the synthesis of 1D BaTiO3 NT arrays on a conductive Ti substrate by electrochemical anodization and sequential hydrothermal reactions. Subsequently, we explore the effect of hydrothermal reaction conditions on the piezoelectric energy conversion efficiency of the BaTiO3 NT arrays. Vertically aligned TiO2 NT arrays, which act as the initial template, are converted into BaTiO3 NT arrays using hydrothermal reaction with various concentrations of the Ba source and reaction times. To validate the electrical output performance of the BaTiO3 NT arrays, we measure the electricity generated from each NT array packaged with a conductive metal foil and epoxy under mechanical pushings. The generated output voltage signals from the BaTiO3 NT arrays increase with increasing concentration of the Ba source and reaction time. These results provide a new strategy for fabricating advanced 1D piezoelectric nanostructures by demonstrating the correlation between hydrothermal reaction conditions and piezoelectric output performance.
Vertically aligned $WO_3$-CuO core-shell nanorod arrays for $NH_3$ sensing are prepared. The sensor is fabricated by preparing $WO_3$-CuO nanorod arrays directly on silicon wafer with interdigital Pt electrodes. The $WO_3$-CuO nanorod arrays are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The sensor based on the vertically aligned $WO_3$-CuO nanorod arrays exhibits ultrasensitive $NH_3$ detection, indicating p-type behavior. The optimum sensing temperature is found to be about $150^{\circ}C$. Both response and recovery time to $NH_3$ ranging from 50 ppm to 500 ppm are around 10-15 s. A possible $NH_3$ sensing mechanism of the vertically aligned hybrid nanorod arrays is proposed.
Piezoelectric technology, which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, has recently attracted drawn considerable attention in the industry. Among the many kinds of piezoelectric materials, BaTiO3 nanotube arrays, which have outstanding uniformity and anisotropic orientation compared to nanowire-based arrays, can be fabricated using a simple synthesis process. In this study, we developed a flexible piezoelectric energy harvester (f-PEH) based on a composite film with PVDF-coated BaTiO3 nanotube arrays through sequential anodization and hydrothermal synthesis processes. The f-PEH fabricated using the piezoelectric composite film exhibited excellent piezoelectric performance and high flexibility compared to the previously reported BaTiO3 nanotube array-based energy harvester. These results demonstrate the possibility for widely application with high performance by our advanced f-PEH technique based on BaTiO3 nanotube arrays.
In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) image correlator by use of computational integral imaging reconstruction based on the modified convolution property of periodic functions (CPPF) for recognition of partially occluded objects. In the proposed correlator, elemental images of the reference and target objects are picked up by a lenslet array, and subsequently are transformed to a sub-image array which contains different perspectives according to the viewing direction. The modified version of the CPPF is applied to the sub-images. This enables us to produce the plane sub-image arrays without the magnification and superimposition processes used in the conventional methods. With the modified CPPF and the sub-image arrays, we reconstruct the reference and target plane sub-image arrays according to the reconstruction plane. 3D object recognition is performed through cross-correlations between the reference and the target plane sub-image arrays. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, some preliminary experiments on the target objects are carried out and the results are presented. Experimental results reveal that the use of plane sub-image arrays enables us to improve the correlation performance, compared to the conventional method using the computational integral imaging reconstruction algorithm.
We investigate the performance of multi-body wave energy converters (WECs). This investigation considers multiple scattering of water waves by the buoys of a WEC under the generalized mode approach. Predominantly, the effect of a WEC's configuration on its energy extraction is studied in this research. First, single-row terminator and single-column attenuator arrays of vertical cylinders have been studied. The performance of these attenuator arrays shows that the wall effect induced by the periodic buoys influences the wave propagation and energy extraction in these WECs. Further studies show that a single-row terminator array of vertical cylinders performs better than the corresponding single-column attenuator array. Subsequently, multi-row terminator arrays of vertical cylinders are investigated by conducting a parametric study. This parametric study shows that the hydrodynamic property of three resonance phenomena makes energy extraction efficiency drop down, and the magnitude of energy extracted oscillates between the resonance points in these WECs. Finally, a 4×8 terminator array of vertical cylinders is studied to determine the effect of various dx (x-directional distance between adjacent rows) within this WEC on its performance. In particular, this study enforces at least two equal dx values within the 4×8 terminator array of vertical cylinders. It shows that a small value of this dx leads to better energy extraction efficiency in some of these various dx arrays than that of a corresponding regular array with the same dx.
We prepared dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with enhanced energy conversion efficiency using open-ended $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays with a $TiO_2$ scattering layer. As compared to closed-ended $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays, the energy conversion efficiency of the open-ended $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays was increased from 5.63% to 5.92%, which is an enhancement of 5.15%. With the $TiO_2$ scattering layer, the energy conversion efficiency was increased from 5.92% to 6.53%, which is an enhancement of 10.30%. After treating the open-ended $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays with $TiCl_4$, the energy conversion efficiency was increased from 6.53% to 6.89%, a 5.51% enhancement, which is attributed to improved light harvesting and increased dye adsorption.
Self-standing $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were fabricated by potentiostatic anodic oxidation method using pure Ti foil as a working electrode and ethylene glycol solution as electrolytes with small addition of $NH_4F$ and $H_2O$. The influences of anodization temperature and time on the morphology and formation of $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were investigated. The fabricated $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were applied as a photoelectrode to dye-sensitized solar cells. Regardless of anodizing temperature and time, the average diameter and wall thickness of $TiO_2$ nanotube show a similar value, whereas the thickness show a different trend with reaction temperature. The thickness of $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays anodized at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ was time-dependent, but on the other hand its at $10^{\circ}C$ are independent of anodization time. The conversion efficiency is low, which is due to a morphology breaking of the $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays in manufacturing process of photoelectrode.
Nanoporous-layer-covered TiO2 nanotube arrays (Type II TNTs) were fabricated by two-step electrochemical anodization. For comparison, conventional TiO2 nanotube arrays (Type I TNTs) were also prepared by one-step electrochemical anodization. Types I and II TNTs were detached by selective etching and then transferred successfully to a transparent F-doped SnO2 (FTO) substrate by a sol-gel process. Both FTO/Types I and II TNTs allowed front side illumination to exhibit incident photon-to-current efficiencies (IPCEs) in the long wavelength region of 300 to 750 nm without the absorption of light by the iodine-containing electrolyte. The Type II TNT exhibited longer electron lifetime and faster charge transfer than the Type I TNT because of its relatively fewer defect states. These beneficial effects lead to a high overall energy conversion efficiency (5.32 %) of the resulting dye-sensitized solar cell.
Recently, $TiO_2$ nanotubes have considerably researched because of their novel application about photocatalysis, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), lithium ion battery, etc. In this work, self-standing $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were fabricated by anodic oxidation method using pure Ti foil as a working electrode in ethylene glycole with 0.3M $NH_4F$ + $2%H_2O$. Growth behavior of $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays was compared according to temperature, voltage and time. The morphology, structure and crystalline of anodized $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were observed by FE-SEM (field emission scanning electron microscope) and XRD (X-ray diffraction).
