A Study on the Name of Ho-Su(胡神) (胡神의 名稱)

  • The purpose of this study was to trace and to identify the origin and meanings of the word ho-su(胡神) that is found in historical documents of Chosun dynasty period. Historical documents, books, and other written materials from Korea and China were used for this research. The word ho-su(胡神) of Korea was originated in Chinese. At the first, ho-su(胡神) was a name of a kind of sleeves. It is long and wide round sleeves with narrow wrist parts. The character ho(胡) means a jaw, lower part of a jaw, a jaw hung down, hing down and lower part. Thus, the word ho-su(胡神) is a compound word made with character ho(胡) and character su(神) sleeve. The direct meaning of ho-su(胡神) in characteristic shape of the sleeves. The second meaning of the ho-su(胡神) is the name of a dress with long and wide round sleeves with narrow wrists. The name of the ho-su as a name of a dress was taken from the name of the ho-su(胡神), a kind of sleeves.

Characteristics of Bansu at Sunggyungwan in Joseon Dynasty (조선시대 성균관 반수(泮水)의 연원과 특성)

  • This research was carried out about the Bansu which surrounded the Sunggyungwan(成均館), national university in the Joseon Dynasty to get the main characteristics of the landscape at Korean traditional school campus by analyzing cultural meaning and historical origin. The earliest record about the Bansu was in "The Book of Odes(詩經)" as Bansu was the water flowing near the Ban palace(泮宮). But, in the following time, Bansu has become the symbol of the school which was built by the feudal lords and one of very important elements in the temple-school(廟學) landscape. The Bansu of Sunggyungwan at Joseon Dynasty was the streams flowing at the east and west of the school campus and get together at the south. Sunggyungwan was located in the sacred place which followed the special organization of Bansu at the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty. And, Bansu in Joseon Dynasty was influenced by the Bansu in Song Dynasty(宋), but it was different from the Bansu in Ming and Qing Dynasty which has been formulated as the halfround pond in front of the school. This research tried to find the reason why in the Josenon Dynasty the stream flowing around the school was regarded as the Bansu. Bansu was also regarded as an important element in the public school, Hyanggyo(鄕校) and the private Seowon(書院). According to this research, the streams which flows around the Seowon or the Hyanggyo were found as called Bansu. Water stream around the Hyanggyo and the Seowon in the Joseon Dynasty has to be reconsidered under the deep research on the organization of Ban-su.

A Study on Dahoe(多繪) and Mangsu(網綬) Used in Royal Formal Dresses in the Joseon Dynasty (조선시대 왕실 예복에 사용된 다회(多繪) 및 망수(網綬) 연구)

  • This study examined dahoe(多繪-braided cord) and mangsu(網綬-ornament of husu for ceremonial dress) used in myeon gwan(冕冠), daedae(大帶), and husu(後綬) among royal formal dresses in the Joseon Dynasty(1392-1910) based on historical materials including literature, relics, and paintings. The results of this study are as follows. In myeon-gwan, dahoe was used for cap strings, goeing(紘) and yeong(纓). Cap strings were applied to the king, the Crown Prince, and the eldest son of the Crown Prince regardless of their status, and they showed differences among the periods. Both goeing and yeong were used during the early period of Joseon, and then only yeong was used in the late period. As goeing was removed and only yeong was used in the late period, patterns combining goeing and yeong, in color and wearing method, appeared. Dahoe used in cap strings is dongdahoe(童多繪-a kind of braided cord). In daedae, 'nyuyak(紐約)' was tied up to its fastening part. The material of nyuyak was changed from dongdahoe in the early Joseon Dynasty to guangdahoe(廣多繪-a kind of braided cord) in the late period, and the method of using it was also changed. Husu was imported from Beijing in China during the early period of the Joseon Dynasty, but in 1747, it was regulated to be woven in Joseon, and at that time, King Yeongjo attempted to restore the institution of weaving husu with "320 su(首)," namely, 6,400 strands as specified for the status of a prince of the Ming Dynasty.

A Study on the Name of Ho-su(好袖) of Chosun Period (朝鮮時代의 胡袖)

  • The purpose of this study was to trace and identify the origin and the meanings of the word ho-su(胡袖) of Chosun dynasty period. Findings of this study can be summerized as follows : The original meaning of the word ho-su(胡袖) is a name of round sleeves. Later it was used as a name of a dress with round sleeves. The word ho-su as a name of a dress is an abbrecviated form of ho su so o za(好袖小 子) of a previous period. The word jyo go ri(赤古里) in historical documents is anothor name of so o za(小 子). Wearing the ho-su(胡袖) was restricted to royal family women. It was included in royal women\`s wedding garments as ordinary use. Colors of this dress was used as a means of differentiating the rank and position of the wearer.

  • The GyoJungEuiSeoGook(校定醫書局, the bureau for revising of medical books) which was established in the 2nd year of InJong GaWoou of Song dynasty, made comparative analyzation about various kinds of publication and reference materials of all classical medical books that was published until Jin Han and Su Dang dynasty, revised the medical books like as Bozushinnongboncho(補注神農本草), Zungkwangbozuhwangjenegyungsomun(重廣補注黃帝內經素問), Shanghanlon(傷寒論), Bigupchunggumyobang (備急千金要方), Magkyung(脈經), Oedaebiyo(外臺備要), Hwangjechimgugapeulgyung(黃帝鍼灸甲乙經), Cchunggumikbang(千金翼方) etc. The signification of such revision was not only to preserve the materials which may be lost before, bibliographically and also make the books of Hwangjenegyung(黃帝內經), Shanghanlon(傷寒論) etc. become more regularly. And it made the foundation of Korean Medical research depends on the documentary records so as to make it have big development by deductive method till the beginning of modern age. The success of GyoJungEuiSeoGook(校定醫書局) indicates that the stagnation of Korean Medical research due to it's behind with the development of politics-economy, social culture and scientific technology which based on western scientific culture. So we may draw the conclusion that the success of scientific research needs to parallel with the external and internal factors of the surrounding science.

The smallpox in the Early Joseon Dynasty and "Changjinjip(瘡疹集)" (조선전기(朝鮮前期) 두창(痘瘡) 유행(流行)과 "창진집(瘡疹集)")

  • The smallpox or chanjin(瘡疹), from Korea Dynasty when the name concretely is discussed to Joseon Dynasty, was very one of the diseases which were important. Not only the public but also the royal family could not avoid the pain which is caused by with the smallpox. Also as a scar and fear that the smallpox leave on, the smallpox was called a God(痘瘡神). As the prayer and sacrificial rites primarily could not relieve the nation and the community from a smallpox, an intellectual finally had to remind that if people considered a factor which caused the smallpox, they could cure this disease. That was Nam Hyoon(南孝溫) who rejected a goast to cause a smallpox. And the compilation of "Changjinjip(瘡疹集)" changed recognition about a smallpox. Especially, the compilation of "Changjinjip" was very important in the history of Korean medicine. Because it told what "Uibanglyuchui(醫方類聚)" the national compilation project of medicine book that King Sejong promoted leaved. The "Changjinjip(瘡疹集)" adopted two kind methods. The one was the medical history or with medical theoretic history method: arranged a various medical theory about "changjin" like "Uibanglyuchui". The other was the clinical method of presenting theories and prescriptions as causes and mutations: reformed contents of "Uibanglyuchui". In addition to special medicine book of smallpox, "Changjinjip" gave knowledge about a paradigm of "Uibanglyuchui" and methods of medical book compilation in later.

A Study on the Design of Gisaeng Costume in Early-Middle Goryeo Dynasty (고려 초중기 기녀의 고증복식 캐릭터 연구)

  • This study was undertaken to design Ginyeo's character and costume in the early-middle Goryeo Dynasty which had a few relics, and to make practical cultural contents. The famous Goryeo Ginyeos who had real names are costume characters. Goryeo women dressed in delicate white ramie jarket in "Goryeo-dokyung", and the shape of Jacket can be two kinds: long-wide jacket enough to tie a belt, and long caftan cover the knee. Goryeo women enjoyed wide yellow skirt, but Ginyeo in "Dongguk-isanggutjip" put on pink, flower, pomegranate, red skirt for high class ladies. In the case of Mong-su(a head cloth with black gauze train), it is thought that Ginyeo fold up train like lower class or just hang down like ordinary women, because of their status. As underwear, a ramie jacket and wide underpants were set up. It is needed that many Golden bells and jade trinkets must be attached to Goryeo Ginyeo's waist to stress their characteristics. Ginyeo's hair style can be designed so that a bunch of right hair was dropped down and the rest hair was rolled on reft shoulder. To design a Ginyeo's costume chatacter of the early-middle Goryeo, the richness of wide skirt, delicacy of white ramie, a great deal of trinkets must be emphasized correctly as a characteristic of Goryeo women's costume in that period.

  • Background and purpose: Gin Ga Chu Yo(該家樞要) was written in the year 1359 by Hwal Su(滑壽) who was a famous oriental doctor between Won(元) and Myeong(明) dynasty. As specialized in sphygmology(脈學), this book was brought together most things about sphygmology(脈學) before Won(元) dynasty by the author. Moreover he added the self-realized things to this book. Methods: In this book, there are all 20 chapters; Chu Yo Hyeon Eon(樞要玄言), Jwa U Su Bae Jang Bu Bu Wi (左右手配臟腑部立), O Jang(五臟), Sa Si peong Maek(四時平脈), Nae Gyeong Sam Bu Maek Beop(內經三部脈法), Ho Heup Chim Bu Jeong O Jang Beop(呼吸沈浮定五臟法), In Ji Ha Gyeong Jung I Jeong O Jang Beop(因指下輕重以定五臟法), Sam Bu So Ju(三部所主), Ji Maek Su Beop(持脈手法), Maek Gwi Yu Sin(脈實有神), Maek Eum Yang Yu Seong(脈陰陽類成 ), Gyeom Hyeon Maek Ryu(兼見脈類), Je Maek Ui Gi Ryu(諸脈宜忌類), Heom Je Sa Jeung Ryu(驗諸死症類) , Sa Jeol Maek Ryu(死絶脈類), O Jang Dong Ji Maek(五藏動止脈), Bu In Maek Beop(婦人脈法), So A Maek Beop(小兒脈法), Maek Sang Tong Hoe(脈象統會), Maek Sang Ga(脈象歌) and an epilogue in the end. This treatise is made up of principal, notes, study and conclusion, we tried to make a translation faithful to the original. Results and Conclusion: Looking into this book, we can know that it is very detail in analyzing item by item, bright and simple in explaining and it is very useful in studying pulse evaluation(脈診). In his preface, Hwal Su(滑壽) expresses his opinion with firm confidence that 'Do(道) of the World scattered in several scholarships and books of method and technique(方術). Nothing of method and technique(方術 ) is more important than medicine. Nothing of medicine goes before pulse evaluation(脈診).' With such good reasons, as a student of sphygmology(脈學), I think this book is very valuable in studying pulse evaluation. So I add Hangul suffixes(吐) to a part of this book and translate it into Korean.
