  • Time-tradeoff measures and healthy years equivalents were assessed and compared through an empirical study based on Multi-attribute utility theory. The study included 33 student subjects as a pilot study, and 54 end-stage renal disease patients in Wisconsin. The two outcome measures were compared with the survival duration of 1, 5, and 10 years. The results of the study show that the time-tradeoff method and the two-stage method did not lead to the same numerical quantities, although they aim to measure the same quantities (equivalent numbers of healthy years) theoretically. The healthy years equivalents involved more inconsistencies, and were less reliable than the time-tradeoff measures. Overestimation of the healthy years equivalents was observed. This seemed to be caused by the complex procedure of the two-stage method as well as by the preferences assessment biases. Based on the study experiences, the time-tradeoff measure would be recommended for problems involving generic medical applications and health policies.

  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics, the mapping understanding, the mapping errors, and the perceptions of student-generated analogies on the separation of mixtures using the sizes of particles by elementary school students' approaches to learning. Fourth graders (N=92) were selected and administered with the tests on the approaches to learning, self-generating analogies, and perception of self-generating analogies. The results revealed that the meaningful learners made more analogies, especially structural/functional, enriched, and higher systematic ones than the rote learners. However, there were little difference in students' approaches to learning in the subcategories of representation (verbal, pictorial, and verbal/pictorial), artificiality (artificial and everyday), and abstraction (abstract and concrete). The meaningful learners had deeper understanding of the analogy and fewer mapping errors than the rote learners. In addition, the numbers of the shared attributes included in student-generated analogies and the scores of the mapping understanding of the meaningful learners were significantly higher than those of the rote learners. Many students, regardless of students' approaches to learning, had positive perceptions of the self-generating analogies in various cognitive and motivational aspects. However, they also point out the various difficulties in the self-generating analogies as their disadvantages. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • As part of the second-year monitoring study on the implementation of the 2015 revised science curriculum, this study investigated high school science teachers' perception and realization of instruction and assessment of elective courses to derive measures to settle and improve the science curriculum. A total of 244 high school science teachers responded to the survey questionnaire, and 9 teachers participated in interviews. In survey results, science teachers are contemplating ways to increase students' science competencies and their participation in classes, but still, lecture-oriented classes are most often used in their teaching. Regarding assessment, teachers responded that there were positive changes in all of the questions related to process-based assessment (PBA). Regarding the difficulty of managing science elective courses, teachers most often selected increased numbers of subjects being covered, overload of work, and the burden of restructuring classes considering various ways of teaching and assessment. Through in-depth interviews, teachers argued the difficulty for Science I courses to emphasize student participatory classes compared to integrated science, and the difficulty to implement student participatory classes for Science II courses, which are mainly placed in the third grade. Teachers also argue that it is necessary to secure time to implement PBA in science elective courses, and that there is no need to implement PBA for the science experiment since there are no tests on the SAT. Based on the results of the study, discussed in the conclusion are support plans for the settlement of PBA in elective courses, and the need for in-depth analysis of the direction and cause of student participatory classes and PBA at the school.

  • This study is investigated the effect of sensitivity upon pattern of the four-digit personal identification numbers(PINs) of A-university students. Under survey 2, PINs were collected after each student had information about his PINs were used in disclose his test scores, But Under survey 1, each student didn't have. Survey 2 is viewed more sensitive situation than survey 1 to students. The rate of occurrences of most common PINs which were created by the reason of easiness to remember or to use without caution, in survey 2 is five times less than survey 1 and using rate of girl students are considerably less than that of boys. By comparing frequencies of digits used at each position, it is found that significant differences exist between two surveys in the first, second and forth position except third. PINs are represented by the polygonal graph with that X-axis shows position and Y-axis shows digits from 0 to 9 used at each position. There are many different figures between two surveys. This study shows that students are more anxious about using the PINs in survey 2 which is viewed more sensitive than survey 1.

  • Recently, due to increases in the numbers of nursing students, there are many cases of clinical practice in remote areas other than in hospitals near a school. In this regard, the Korea Institute of Nursing Evaluation emphasizes the securing of safety, the provision of regulations, and countermeasures related to long-term practices of nursing students. The purpose of this study is to develop a safety management application for nursing students who are practicing at a distance. This application configuration consists of accommodation location information, nursing student location information check, and notification of the professor in charge. The location information of nursing students was based on their location on weekdays from 10 pm to 11 pm, due to the work schedule of the nursing students. For this reason, nursing students can use this app after their clinical practice; if the student is out of the safety radius or there is a problem, a risk notification can be provided through a service and a rescue request can be made.

  • This paper focuses on proportional reasoning being emphasized in today's elementary math, and analyzes the way students use their proportional reasoning abilities and strategies according to their academic achievement levels in solving proportional problems. For this purpose, various types of proportional problems were presented to 173 sixth-grade elementary school students and they were asked to use a maximum of three types of proportional reasoning strategies to solve those problems. The experiment results showed that upper-ranking students had better ability to use, express and perceive more types of proportional reasoning than their lower-ranking counterparts. In addition, the proportional reasoning strategies preferred by students were shown to be independent of academic achievement. But there was a difference in the proportional reasoning strategy according to the types of the problems and the ratio of the numbers given in the problem. As a result of this study, we emphasize that there is necessity of the suitable proportional reasoning instruction which reflected on the difference of ability according to student's academic achievement.

  • Purpose: We have studied the problems associated with increased number of ophthalmic optics students and its effects on the supply and demand of optician. Methods: We collected data from Education Statistics, a white paper of Minister for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, academyinfo web site and University (College) web site. Results: We forecasted an estimate for supply and demand of optician using the entrance number of ophthalmic optics. Conclusions: The numbers of produced optician are in excessive supply. The excessive supply of optician can contribute towards worsening working conditions and lower job satisfaction of an optician. Therefore this can result infrequent turn over of jobs within the same field and migration into the different field of areas. To solve these problems, we will need to act with the manpower policy of government by gathering the voices of the related optician agencies. Then expansion of job domain, improvement of quality level, the improvement of the working conditions for optician can be accomplished by the unification of university system and reduction of entrance numbers for department of ophthalmic optics.

  • Statement of problem. Titanium-Nickel alloy might be used in various prosthetic restorations since it has a unique property such as super-elasticity and high fatigue resistance. However, little is known about the casting ability of this alloy. Purpose. This in vitro study compared the casting accuracy and the porosity made with different investments and various sprue designs to ascertain what casting condition would be better for the fabrication of Ti-Ni cast restorations. Material and methods. A total of 70 Ti-Ni alloy crowns were made and divided into 7 groups of 10 copings on a metal master die. For measuring the effect of the sprue numbers, two groups with one and two 8-gauge sprues were compared. Moreover, the results of the conventional sprue and the double thickness sprues were compared. Three investments were used; carbon free phosphate bonded investment, titanium investment and gypsum bonded investment. The cast restorations were evaluated at 48 points on the entire circumferential margin with a stereomicroscope measuring in micrometers. Each crown was radiographically examined for casting defects and porosity. Data on casting accuracy were analyzed using two-way and Post hoc Scheffe's comparison to determine whether significant differences existed at the 95% confidence level. Student-Newman-Keuls test were performed to identify significant differences in the number of voids. Results. The double sprueing group and double thickness group had significantly less marginal discrepancy than the single sprueing group (P<.05 and P<.01, respectively). The castings with phosphate bonded investment showed the least marginal discrepancy and the smoothest surface. The castings invested in the gypsum bonded investment had the greatest gaps in margin and the largest failure rate. The double sprueing group and phosphate bonded investment group had significantly smaller void numbers and smaller void size than the other groups. Conclusion. Within the limitations of this in vitro study, the casting accuracy of the groups using thicker, double sprue design and the phosphate bonded investment was significantly superior. Moreover, void number and size were less than other groups.
